Topological background discrimination in the PandaX-III neutrinoless double beta decay experiment

The PandaX-III experiment plans to search for neutrinoless double beta decay (0$νββ$) of $^{136}$Xe in the China JinPing underground Laboratory (CJPL). The experiment will use a high pressure gaseous Time Projection Chamber (TPC) to register both the energy and the electron track topology of an event. This article is devoted to the software side of the experiment. As software tool we use REST, a framework developed for the reconstruction and simulation of TPC-based detector systems. We study the potential for background reduction by introducing appropiate parameters based on the properties of 0$νββ$ events. We exploit for the first time not only the energy density of the electron track-ends, but also the electron scattering angles produced by an electron near the end of its trajectory. To implement this, we have added new algorithms for detector signal and track processing inside REST. Their assessment shows that background can be reduced by about 7 orders of magnitude while keeping 0$νββ$ efficiency above 20% for the PandaX-III baseline readout scheme, a 2-dimensional 3mm-pitch stripped readout. More generally, we use the potential of REST to handle 2D/3D data to assess the impact on signal-to-background significance at different detector granularities, and to validate the PandaX-III baseline choice. Finally, we demonstrate the potential to discriminate surface background events generated at the readout plane in the absence of $t_o$, by making use of event parameters related with the diffusion of electrons.

Tunable magnetic orders in CePd$_2$As$_{2-x}$P$_x$

We report the successful synthesis of the polycrystalline compounds CePd$_2$As$_{2-x}$P$_x$ ($0 \leq x \leq 2$) and their physical properties by measuring the transport, magnetic and thermodynamic behaviors as a function of temperature and/or magnetic field. Powder x-ray diffraction (XRD) indicates that CePd$_2$As$_{2-x}$P$_x$ crystallizes in the ThCr$_2$Si$_2$-type tetragonal structure. CePd$_2$As$_2$ exhibits a moderate Sommerfeld coefficient of $γ$ $\approx$ 88 mJ/mol-K$^2$, and undergoes an antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition at the Néel temperature $T_N \approx$ 15 K. Upon substituting As with P, the $T_N$ is nearly unchanged up to $x \simeq 0.6$, while a ferromagnetic (FM) transition develops below $T_N$ for $x \simeq 0.4$. The Curie temperature $T_C$ increases with increasing $x$ and eventually merges with the AFM transition at $x \simeq 0.6$. With further increase of $x$, the system follows typical FM behaviors and its $T_C$ monotonically increases and reaches $T_C \approx 28$ K in CePd$_2$P$_2$. Moreover, a metamagnetic transition is observed in the As-rich samples, but vanishes for $x \geq 0.4$. Such a tunable magnetic ground state may provide an opportunity to explore the possible quantum critical behavior in CePd$_2$As$_{2-x}$P$_x$.

Properties of recent IBAD-MOCVD Coated Conductors relevant to their high field, low temperature magnet use

BaZrO3 (BZO) nanorods are now incorporated into production IBAD-MOCVD coated conductors. Here we compare several examples of both BZO-free and BZO-containing coated conductors using critical current (Ic) characterizations at 4.2 K over their full angular range up to fields of 31 T. We find that BZO nanorods do not produce any c-axis distortion of the critical current density Jc(theta) curve at 4.2 K at any field, but also that pinning is nevertheless strongly enhanced compared to the non-BZO conductors. We also find that the tendency of the ab-plane Jc(theta) peak to become cusp-like is moderated by BZO and we define a new figure of merit that may be helpful for magnet design - the OADI (Off-Axis Double Ic), which clearly shows that BZO broadens the ab-plane peak and thus raises Jc 5-30° away from the tape plane, where the most critical approach to Ic occurs in many coil designs. We describe some experimental procedures that may make critical current Ic tests of these very high current tapes more tractable at 4.2 K, where Ic exceeds 1000 A even for 4 mm wide tape with only 1 micron thickness of superconductor. A positive conclusion is that BZO is very beneficial for the Jc characteristics at 4.2 K, just as it is at higher temperatures, where the correlated c-axis pinning effects of the nanorods are much more obvious.
