A novel technique for the measurement of the avalanche fluctuations of a GEM stack using a gating foil

We have developed a novel technique for the measurement of the size of avalanche fluctuations of gaseous detectors using a gating device (gating foil) prepared for the time projection chamber in the international linear collider experiment (ILD-TPC). In addition to the gating function, the gating foil is capable of controlling the average fraction of drift electrons detected after gas amplification. The signal charge width and shape (skewness) for electron-ion pairs created by a pulsed UV laser as a function of the transmission rate of the gating foil can be used to determine the relative variance of gas gain for single electrons. We present the measurement principle and the result obtained using a stack of gas electron multipliers (GEMs) operated in a gas mixture of Ar-CF$_4$(3%)-isobutane(2%) at atmospheric pressure. Also discussed is the influence of the avalanche fluctuations on the spatial resolution of the ILD-TPC.

Role of axial U(1) anomaly in chiral susceptibility of QCD at high temperature

The chiral susceptibility, or the first derivative of the chiral condensate with respect to the quark mass, is often used as a probe for the QCD phase transition since the chiral condensate is an order parameter of $SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R$ symmetry breaking. However, the chiral condensate also breaks the axial $U(1)$ symmetry, which is usually not paid attention to as it is already broken by anomaly and apparently gives little impact on the transition. We investigate the susceptibilities in the scalar and pseudoscalar channels in order to quantify how much the axial $U(1)$ breaking contributes to the chiral phase transition. Employing a chirally symmetric lattice Dirac operator, and its eigenmode decomposition, we separate the axial $U(1)$ breaking effects from others. Our result in two-flavor QCD indicates that both of the connected and disconnected chiral susceptibilities are dominated by the axial $U(1)$ breaking at temperatures $T\gtrsim 190$ MeV after the quadratically divergent constant is subtracted.

Study of the $h γZ$ coupling at the ILC

We studied the $e^+e^- \to h γ$ process at the full simulation level, using a realistic detector model to study the feasibility to constrain the SM effective field theory (SMEFT) $h γZ$ coefficient, $ζ_{AZ}$, at the ILC. Assuming International Large Detector (ILD) operating at 250 GeV ILC, it is shown that the $e^+e^- \to hγ$ process is much more difficult to observe than naively expected if there is no BSM contribution. We thus put upper limits on the cross section of this process. The expected combined 95% C.L. upper limits for full polarisations $(P_{e^-}, P_{e^+})=(-100\%, +100\%)$ and $(+100\%, -100\%)$ are $\frac{σ_{h γ}^{L}}{σ_{S M}^{L}}<5.0$ and $\frac{σ_{h γ}^{R}}{σ_{S M}^{R}}<61.9$, respectively. The resultant 95% C.L. limit on $ζ_{AZ}$ is $-0.020<ζ_{A Z}<0.003$.

What is chiral susceptibility probing?

In the early days of QCD, the axial $U(1)$ anomaly was considered as a trigger for the breaking of the $SU(2)_L\times SU(2)_R$ symmetry through topological excitations of gluon fields. However, it has been a challenge for lattice QCD to quantify the effect. In this work, we simulate QCD at high temperatures with chiral fermions. The exact chiral symmetry enables us to separate the contribution from the axial $U(1)$ breaking from others among the susceptibilities in the scalar and pseudoscalar channels. Our result in two-flavor QCD indicates that the chiral susceptibility, which is conventionally used as a probe for $SU(2)_L\times SU(2)_R$ breaking, is actually dominated by the axial $U(1)$ breaking at temperatures $T\ge 165$ MeV.

Chiral-spin symmetry of the meson spectral function above $T_c$

Recently, via calculation of spatial correlators of $J=0,1$ isovector operators using a chirally symmetric Dirac operator within $N_F=2$ QCD, it has been found that QCD at temperatures $T_c - 3 T_c$ is approximately $SU(2)_{CS}$ and $SU(4)$ symmetric. The latter symmetry suggests that the physical degrees of freedom are chirally symmetric quarks bound by the chromoelectric field into color singlet objects without chromomagnetic effects. This regime of QCD has been referred to as a Stringy Fluid. Here we calculate correlators for propagation in time direction at a temperature slightly above $T_c$ and find the same approximate symmetries. This means that the meson spectral function is chiral-spin and $SU(4)$ symmetric.

FLAG Review 2019

We review lattice results related to pion, kaon, $D$-meson, $B$-meson, and nucleon physics with the aim of making them easily accessible to the nuclear and particle physics communities. More specifically, we report on the determination of the light-quark masses, the form factor $f_+(0)$ arising in the semileptonic $K \to π$ transition at zero momentum transfer, as well as the decay constant ratio $f_K/f_π$ and its consequences for the CKM matrix elements $V_{us}$ and $V_{ud}$. Furthermore, we describe the results obtained on the lattice for some of the low-energy constants of $SU(2)_L\times SU(2)_R$ and $SU(3)_L\times SU(3)_R$ Chiral Perturbation Theory. We review the determination of the $B_K$ parameter of neutral kaon mixing as well as the additional four $B$ parameters that arise in theories of physics beyond the Standard Model. For the heavy-quark sector, we provide results for $m_c$ and $m_b$ as well as those for $D$- and $B$-meson decay constants, form factors, and mixing parameters. These are the heavy-quark quantities most relevant for the determination of CKM matrix elements and the global CKM unitarity-triangle fit. We review the status of lattice determinations of the strong coupling constant $α_s$. Finally, in this review we have added a new section reviewing results for nucleon matrix elements of the axial, scalar and tensor bilinears, both isovector and flavor diagonal.

Symmetries of the light hadron spectrum in high temperature QCD

Properties of QCD matter change significantly around the chiral crossover temperature, and the effects on $U(1)_A$ and topological susceptibilities, as well as the meson spectrum have been studied with much care. Baryons and the effect of parity doubling in this temperature range have been analyzed previously by various other groups employing different setups. Here we construct suitable operators to investigate chiral and axial $U(1)_A$ symmetries in the baryon spectrum. Measurements for different volumes and quark-masses are done with two flavors of chirally symmetric domain-wall fermions at temperatures above the critical one. The possibility of emergent $SU(4)$ and $SU(2)_{CS}$ symmetries is discussed.

Localized and mixed valence state of Ce $4f$ in superconducting and ferromagnetic CeO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$BiS$_{2}$ revealed by x-ray absorption and photoemission spectroscopy

We have performed Ce $L_3$-edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and Ce $4d$-$4f$ resonant photoemission spectroscopy (PES) on single crystals of CeO$_{1-x}$F$_x$BiS$_2$ for $x=0.0$ and 0.5 in order to investigate the Ce $4f$ electronic states. In the Ce $L_3$-edge XAS, mixed valence of Ce was found in the $x=0.0$ sample and the F-doping suppresses it, which is consistent with the results on polycrystalline samples. As for the resonant PES, we found that the Ce $4f$ electrons in both $x=0.0$ and $0.5$ systems respectively form a flat band at 1.0 eV and 1.4 eV below the Fermi level and there is no contribution to the Fermi surfaces. Interestingly, Ce valence in CeOBiS$_2$ deviates from Ce$^{3+}$ even though Ce $4f$ electrons are localized, indicating the Ce valence is not in a typical valence fluctuation regime. We assume that localized Ce $4f$ in CeOBiS$_2$ is mixed with the unoccupied Bi $6p_z$, which is consistent with the previous local structural study. Based on the analysis of the Ce $L_3$-edge XAS spectra using Anderson's impurity model calculation, we found that the transfer integral becomes smaller increasing the number of Ce $4f$ electrons upon the F substitution for O.

Review of lattice results concerning low-energy particle physics

We review lattice results related to pion, kaon, D- and B-meson physics with the aim of making them easily accessible to the particle physics community. More specifically, we report on the determination of the light-quark masses, the form factor f+(0), arising in the semileptonic K -> pi transition at zero momentum transfer, as well as the decay constant ratio fK/fpi and its consequences for the CKM matrix elements Vus and Vud. Furthermore, we describe the results obtained on the lattice for some of the low-energy constants of SU(2)LxSU(2)R and SU(3)LxSU(3)R Chiral Perturbation Theory. We review the determination of the BK parameter of neutral kaon mixing as well as the additional four B parameters that arise in theories of physics beyond the Standard Model. The latter quantities are an addition compared to the previous review. For the heavy-quark sector, we provide results for mc and mb (also new compared to the previous review), as well as those for D- and B-meson decay constants, form factors, and mixing parameters. These are the heavy-quark quantities most relevant for the determination of CKM matrix elements and the global CKM unitarity-triangle fit. Finally, we review the status of lattice determinations of the strong coupling constant alpha_s.

Fermi surfaces and orbital polarization in superconducting CeO$_{0.5}$F$_{0.5}$BiS$_{2}$ revealed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy

We have investigated the electronic structure of BiS$_2$-based CeO$_{0.5}$F$_{0.5}$BiS$_2$ superconductor using polarization-dependent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), and succeeded in elucidating the orbital characters on the Fermi surfaces. In the rectangular Fermi pockets around X point, the straight portion parallel to the $k_y$ direction is dominated by Bi $6p_x$ character. The orbital polarization indicates the underlying quasi-one-dimensional electronic structure of the BiS$_2$ system. Moreover, distortions on tetragonally aligned Bi could give rise to the band Jahn-Teller effect.

Proton decay matrix elements on the lattice

Hadronic matrix elements of proton decay are essential ingredients to bridge the grand unification theory to low energy observables like proton lifetime. In this paper we non-perturbatively calculate the matrix elements, relevant for the process of a nucleon decaying into a pseudoscalar meson and an anti-lepton through generic baryon number violating four-fermi operators. Lattice QCD with 2+1 flavor dynamical domain-wall fermions with the {\it direct} method, which is direct measurement of matrix element from three-point function without chiral perturbation theory, are used for this study to have good control over the lattice discretization error, operator renormalization, and chiral extrapolation. The relevant form factors for possible transition process from an initial proton or neutron to a final pion or kaon induced by all types of three quark operators are obtained through three-point functions of (nucleon)-(three-quark operator)-(meson) with physical kinematics. In this study all the relevant systematic uncertainties of the form factors are taken into account for the first time, and the total error is found to be the range 30%-40% for $π$ and 20%-40% for $K$ final states.

Continuum Limit Physics from 2+1 Flavor Domain Wall QCD

We present physical results obtained from simulations using 2+1 flavors of domain wall quarks and the Iwasaki gauge action at two values of the lattice spacing $a$, ($a^{-1}$=\,1.73\,(3)\,GeV and $a^{-1}$=\,2.28\,(3)\,GeV). On the coarser lattice, with $24^3\times 64\times 16$ points, the analysis of ref.[1] is extended to approximately twice the number of configurations. The ensembles on the finer $32^3\times 64\times 16$ lattice are new. We explain how we use lattice data obtained at several values of the lattice spacing and for a range of quark masses in combined continuum-chiral fits in order to obtain results in the continuum limit and at physical quark masses. We implement this procedure at two lattice spacings, with unitary pion masses in the approximate range 290--420\,MeV (225--420\,MeV for partially quenched pions). We use the masses of the $π$ and $K$ mesons and the $Ω$ baryon to determine the physical quark masses and the values of the lattice spacing. While our data are consistent with the predictions of NLO SU(2) chiral perturbation theory, they are also consistent with a simple analytic ansatz leading to an inherent uncertainty in how best to perform the chiral extrapolation that we are reluctant to reduce with model-dependent assumptions about higher order corrections. Our main results include $f_π=124(2)_{\rm stat}(5)_{\rm syst}$\,MeV, $f_K/f_π=1.204(7)(25)$ where $f_K$ is the kaon decay constant, $m_s^{\bar{\textrm{MS}}}(2\,\textrm{GeV})=(96.2\pm 2.7)$\,MeV and $m_{ud}^{\bar{\textrm{MS}}}(2\,\textrm{GeV})=(3.59\pm 0.21)$\,MeV\, ($m_s/m_{ud}=26.8\pm 1.4$) where $m_s$ and $m_{ud}$ are the mass of the strange-quark and the average of the up and down quark masses respectively, $[Σ^{\msbar}(2 {\rm GeV})]^{1/3} = 256(6)\; {\rm MeV}$, where $Σ$ is the chiral condensate, the Sommer scale $r_0=0.487(9)$\,fm and $r_1=0.333(9)$\,fm.

Control of polymer gel surface pattern formation and its three dimensional measurement method

We report the controllability of a gelation surface pattern formation. Recently, we have found and studied a novel kind of pattern formation that occurs during a radical polymerization (gelation) process. The pattern formation is observed in an open top boundary of quasi two dimensional gelation. In previous studies, we have used two dimensional photo based image processing to analyze the patterns. However, the actual pattern is a three dimensional surface deformation. Thus we develop a three dimensional measurement system using a line laser displacement sensor and an automatic x-stage. Patterns measured by the system are analyzed and discussed by means of pattern controllability. In particular, we focus on the possibility of the pattern control using an external temperature field. As a result, we reveal that the global structure can be controlled, whereas the characteristic length scales (wavelength and amplitude) are not controllable.

Suppression of time reversal symmetry breaking superconductivity in Pr(Os,Ru)_4Sb_12 and (Pr,La)Os_4Sb_12

Zero-field muon spin relaxation experiments have been carried out in the Pr(Os_{1-x}Ru_x)_4Sb_12 and Pr_{1-y}La_yOs_4Sb_12 alloy systems to investigate broken time-reversal symmetry (TRS) in the superconducting state, signaled by the onset of a spontaneous static local magnetic field B_s. In both alloy series B_s initially decreases linearly with solute concentration. Ru doping is considerably more efficient than La doping, with a ~50% faster initial decrease. The data suggest that broken TRS is suppressed for Ru concentration x >~ 0.6, but persists for essentially all La concentrations. Our data support a crystal-field excitonic Cooper pairing mechanism for TRS-breaking superconductivity.

Comment on "Pronounced Enhancement of the Lower Critical Field and Critical Current Deep in the Superconducting State of PrOs4Sb12"

Cichorek et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 94, 107002 (2005)] reported enhancements of the lower critical field Hc1(T) and critical current in superconducting PrOs4Sb12 below a transition temperature Tc3 ~ 0.6 K, and speculated that this reflects a transition between superconducting phases. Features have been observed near Tc3 in other properties, but not in the specific heat. We report muon spin rotation measurements of the penetration depth in the vortex state of PrOs4Sb12 near Hc1(T), that to high accuracy exhibit no anomaly Tc3 and therefore cast doubt on the putative phase transition.

Continuum Limit of $B_K$ from 2+1 Flavor Domain Wall QCD

We determine the neutral kaon mixing matrix element $B_K$ in the continuum limit with 2+1 flavors of domain wall fermions, using the Iwasaki gauge action at two different lattice spacings. These lattice fermions have near exact chiral symmetry and therefore avoid artificial lattice operator mixing. We introduce a significant improvement to the conventional NPR method in which the bare matrix elements are renormalized non-perturbatively in the RI-MOM scheme and are then converted into the MSbar scheme using continuum perturbation theory. In addition to RI-MOM, we introduce and implement four non-exceptional intermediate momentum schemes that suppress infrared non-perturbative uncertainties in the renormalization procedure. We compute the conversion factors relating the matrix elements in this family of RI-SMOM schemes and MSbar at one-loop order. Comparison of the results obtained using these different intermediate schemes allows for a more reliable estimate of the unknown higher-order contributions and hence for a correspondingly more robust estimate of the systematic error. We also apply a recently proposed approach in which twisted boundary conditions are used to control the Symanzik expansion for off-shell vertex functions leading to a better control of the renormalization in the continuum limit. We control chiral extrapolation errors by considering both the NLO SU(2) chiral effective theory, and an analytic mass expansion. We obtain $B_K^{\msbar}(3 GeV) = 0.529(5)_{stat}(15)_χ(2)_{FV}(11)_{NPR}$. This corresponds to $\hat{B}_K = 0.749(7)_{stat}(21)_χ(3)_{FV}(15)_{NPR}$. Adding all sources of error in quadrature we obtain $\hat{B}_K = 0.749(27)_{combined}$, with an overall combined error of 3.6%.

Renormalization of quark bilinear operators in a momentum-subtraction scheme with a nonexceptional subtraction point

We extend the Rome-Southampton regularization independent momentum-subtraction renormalization scheme(RI/MOM) for bilinear operators to one with a nonexceptional, symmetric subtraction point. Two-point Green's functions with the insertion of quark bilinear operators are computed with scalar, pseudoscalar, vector, axial-vector and tensor operators at one-loop order in perturbative QCD. We call this new scheme RI/SMOM, where the S stands for "symmetric". Conversion factors are derived, which connect the RI/SMOM scheme and the MSbar scheme and can be used to convert results obtained in lattice calculations into the MSbar scheme. Such a symmetric subtraction point involves nonexceptional momenta implying a lattice calculation with substantially suppressed contamination from infrared effects. Further, we find that the size of the one-loop corrections for these infrared improved kinematics is substantially decreased in the case of the pseudoscalar and scalar operator, suggesting a much better behaved perturbative series. Therefore it should allow us to reduce the error in the determination of the quark mass appreciably.

Spin Fluid Dynamics Observed by Magnetic Fountain Effect and Mechano-Spin Effect in the Ferromagnetic Superfluid $^3$He A$_1$ Phase

Systematic observations of the magnetically generated fountain pressure in the superfluid $^3$He A$_1$ have been carried out in a newly built apparatus designed to reduce the effect of thermal gradients. In the same apparatus, mechanical pumping and filtering of polarized nuclear spins were realized by the pneumatic pumping action of an electrostatically actuated membrane. In both experiments, the measured induced pressure was observed to decay at all temperatures where the A$_1$ phase appeared in magnetic fields up to 13 T and liquid pressures between 1 and 29 bar. The inferred spin relaxation rate tended to increase as the low temperature phase boundary with the A$_2$ phase (T$_{C2}$) was approached. The increase in spin relaxation rate near T$_{C2}$ can be explained by the presence of a minority spin condensate in the A$_1$ phase as predicted by Monien and Tewordt and by the application of the Leggett-Takagi theory of spin relaxation in superfluid $^3$He.

Surface Majorana Cone of the Superfluid $^3$He B Phase

The superfluid $^3$He B phase, one of the oldest unconventional fermionic condensates experimentally realized, is recently predicted to support Majorana fermion surface states. Majorana fermion, which is characterized by the equivalence of particle and antiparticle, has a linear dispersion relation referred to as the Majorana cone. We measured the transverse acoustic impedance $Z$ of the superfluid$^3$He B phase changing its boundary condition and found a growth of peak in $Z$ on a higher specularity wall. Our theoretical analysis indicates that the variation of $Z$ is induced by the formation of the cone-like dispersion relation and thus confirms the important feature of the Majorana fermion in the specular limit.

Multiband Superconductivity in Filled-Skutterudite Compounds (Pr_{1-x}La_{x})Os_{4}Sb_{12}: An Sb Nuclear-Quadruple-Resonance (NQR) Study

We report on Sb nuclear-quadrupole-resonance (NQR) study in filled-skutterudite compounds (Pr_1-xLa_x)Os_4Sb_12. The Sb-NQR spectra have split into two sets, arising from different Sb_12 cages containing either Pr or La, which enables us to measure two kinds of nuclear spin-lattice relaxation time T_1^Pr and T_1^La. In the normal state, the temperature (T) dependence of 1/T^Pr_1T showed almost the same behavior as that for PrOs_4Sb_12 regardless of. In contrast, 1/T^La_1T markedly decreases with increasing La concentration. In the superconducting state for x=0.05 and 0.2, 1/T_1^Pr exponentially decreases down to T=0.7 K with no coherence peak below T_c as well as in PrOs_4Sb_12. A remarkable finding is that the residual density of states at the Fermi level below T_c is induced by La substitution for Pr. These results are proposed to be understood in terms of a multiband-superconductivity model that assumes a full gap for part of the FS and the presence of point nodes for a small 4f^2-derived FS inherent in PrOs_4Sb_12. For x=0.8 and 1,1/T^La_1 exhibits a coherence peak and the nodeless energy gap characteristic for weak-coupling s-wave superconductors. With increasing Pr content, T_c and the energy gap increases. The novel strong-coupling superconductivity in PrOs_4Sb_12 is inferred to be mediated by the local interaction between 4f^2-derived crystal-electric-field states with the electric quadrupole degree of freedom and conduction electrons. This coupling causes a mass enhancement of quasi-particles for a part of FS and induces a small FS, which is responsible for point nodes in the superconducting gap function. Note that the small FS does not play any primary role for the strong-coupling superconductivity in PrOs_4Sb_12.

The Kaon B-parameter from Quenched Domain-Wall QCD

We present numerical results for the kaon B-parameter, B_K, determined in the quenched approximation of lattice QCD. Our simulations are performed using domain-wall fermions and the renormalization group improved, DBW2 gauge action which combine to give quarks with good chiral symmetry at finite lattice spacing. Operators are renormalized non-perturbatively using the RI/MOM scheme. We study scaling by performing the simulation on two different lattices with a^{-1} = 1.982(30) and 2.914(54) GeV. We combine this quenched scaling study with an earlier calculation of B_K using two flavors of dynamical, domain-wall quarks at a single lattice spacing to obtain B_K(MS,NDR,mu=2GeV)=0.563(21)(39)(30), were the first error is statistical, the second systematic (without quenching errors) and the third estimates the error due to quenching.

Calculation of Non-Leptonic Kaon Decay Amplitudes from $K\toπ$ Matrix Elements in Quenched Domain-Wall QCD

We explore application of the domain wall fermion formalism of lattice QCD to calculate the $K\toππ$ decay amplitudes in terms of the $K\toπ$ and $K\to 0$ hadronic matrix elements through relations derived in chiral perturbation theory. Numerical simulations are carried out in quenched QCD using domain-wall fermion action for quarks and an RG-improved gauge action for gluons on a $16^3\times 32\times 16$ and $24^3\times 32\times 16$ lattice at $β=2.6$ corresponding to the lattice spacing $1/a\approx 2$GeV. Quark loop contractions which appear in Penguin diagrams are calculated by the random noise method, and the $ΔI=1/2$ matrix elements which require subtractions with the quark loop contractions are obtained with a statistical accuracy of about 10%. We confirm the chiral properties required of the $K\toπ$ matrix elements. Matching the lattice matrix elements to those in the continuum at $μ=1/a$ using the perturbative renormalization factor to one loop order, and running to the scale $μ=m_c=1.3$ GeV with the renormalization group for $N_f=3$ flavors, we calculate all the matrix elements needed for the decay amplitudes. With these matrix elements, the $ΔI=3/2$ decay amplitude shows a good agreement with experiment in the chiral limit. The $ΔI=1/2$ amplitude, on the other hand, is about 50--60% of the experimental one even after chiral extrapolation. In view ofthe insufficient enhancement of the $ΔI=1/2$ contribution, we employ the experimental values for the real parts of the decay amplitudes in our calculation of $ε'/ε$. We find that the $ΔI=3/2$ contribution is larger than the $ΔI=1/2$ contribution so that $ε'/ε$ is negative and has a magnitude of order $10^{-4}$. Possible reasons for these unsatisfactory results are discussed.

Chiral property of domain-wall fermion from eigenvalues of 4D Wilson-Dirac Operator

We investigate a chiral property of the domain-wall fermion (DWF) system using the four-dimensional hermitian Wilson-Dirac operator $H_W$. A formula expressing the Ward-Takahashi identity quark mass $m_{5q}$ with eigenvalues of this operator is derived, which well explains the $N_5$ dependence of $m_{5q}$ observed in previous numerical simulations. Kaon B parameter from quenched domain-wall QCD

We report on a calculation of $B_K$ with domain wall fermion action in quenched QCD. Simulations are made with a renormalization group improved gauge action at $β=2.6$ and 2.9 corresponding to $a^{-1}\approx 2$GeV and 3GeV. Effects due to finite fifth dimensional size $N_5$ and finite spatial size $N_σ$ are examined in detail. Matching to the continuum operator is made perturbatively at one loop order. Quenched QCD with domain-wall fermions on coarse lattices

We investigate the existence of chiral zero modes at a^{-1} \simeq 1 GeV in quenched domain-wall QCD. Simulations are carried out for the plaquette and an RG-improved gauge actions on a 12^3x24xN_s lattice with N_s=10-50. We find that the pion mass in the chiral limit remains non-vanishing as N_s\to\infty for both gauge actions. Possible origins of this non-vanishing pion mass are discussed.
