A generalization of cyclic shift classes

Motivated by Lusztig's $G$-stable pieces, we consider the combinatorial pieces: the pairs $(w, K)$ for elements $w$ in the Weyl group and subsets $K$ of simple reflections that are normalized by $w$. We generalize the notion of cyclic shift classes on the Weyl groups to the set of combinatorial pieces. We show that the partial cyclic shift classes of combinatorial pieces associated with minimal-length elements have nice representatives. As applications, we prove the left-right symmetry and the compatibility of the induction functors of the parabolic character sheaves.

Affine Deligne--Lusztig varieties with finite Coxeter parts

In this paper, we study affine Deligne--Lusztig varieties $X_w(b)$ when the finite part of the element $w$ in the Iwahori--Weyl group is a partial $σ$-Coxeter element. We show that such $w$ is a cordial element and $X_w(b) \neq \emptyset$ if and only if $b$ satisfies a certain Hodge--Newton indecomposability condition. The main result of this paper is that for such $w$ and $b$, $X_w(b)$ has a simple geometric structure: the $σ$-centralizer of $b$ acts transitively on the set of irreducible components of $X_w(b)$; and each irreducible component is an iterated fibration over a classical Deligne--Lusztig variety of Coxeter type, and the iterated fibers are either $\mathbb A^1$ or $\mathbb G_m$.

Product structure and regularity theorem for totally nonnegative flag varieties

The totally nonnegative flag variety was introduced by Lusztig. It has enriched combinatorial, geometric, and Lie-theoretic structures. In this paper, we introduce a (new) $J$-total positivity on the full flag variety of an arbitrary Kac-Moody group, generalizing the (ordinary) total positivity. We show that the $J$-totally nonnegative flag variety has a cellular decomposition into totally positive $J$-Richardson varieties. Moreover, each totally positive $J$-Richardson variety admits a favorable decomposition, called a product structure. Combined with the generalized Poincare conjecture, we prove that the closure of each totally positive $J$-Richardson variety is a regular CW complex homeomorphic to a closed ball. Moreover, the $J$-total positivity on the full flag provides a model for the (ordinary) totally nonnegative partial flag variety. As a consequence, we prove that the closure of each (ordinary) totally positive Richardson variety is a regular CW complex homeomorphic to a closed ball, confirming conjectures of Galashin, Karp and Lam.

A Birkhoff-Bruhat Atlas for partial flag varieties

A partial flag variety ${\mathcal {P}}_K$ of a Kac-Moody group $G$ has a natural stratification into projected Richardson varieties. When $G$ is a connected reductive group, a Bruhat atlas for ${\mathcal {P}}_K$ was constructed by He, Knutson and Lu: ${\mathcal {P}}_K$ is locally modeled with Schubert varieties in some Kac-Moody flag variety as stratified spaces. The existence of Bruaht atlases implies some nice combinatorial and geometric properties on the partial flag varieties and the decomposition into projected Richardson varieties. A Bruhat atlas does not exist for partial flag varieties of an arbitrary Kac-Moody group due to combinatorial and geometric reasons. To overcome obstructions, we introduce the notion of Birkhoff-Bruhat atlas. Instead of the Schubert varieties used in a Bruhat atlas, we use the $J$-Schubert varieties for a Birkhoff-Bruhat atlas. The notion of the $J$-Schubert varieties interpolates Birkhoff decomposition and Bruhat decomposition of the full flag variety (of a larger Kac-Moody group). The main result of this paper is the construction of a Birkhoff-Bruhat atlas for any partial flag variety ${\mathcal {P}}_K$ of a Kac-Moody group. We also construct a combinatorial atlas for the index set $Q_K$ of the projected Richardson varieties in ${\mathcal {P}}_K$. As a consequence, we show that $Q_K$ has some nice combinatorial properties. This gives a new proof and generalizes the work of Williams in the case where the group $G$ is a connected reductive group.

Basic loci of Coxeter type with arbitrary parahoric level

Motivated by the desire to understand the geometry of the basic loci in the reduction of Shimura varieties, we study their "group-theoretic models" -- generalized affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties -- in cases where they have a particularly nice description. Continuing the work of [GH] and [GHN] we single out the class of cases of Coxeter type, give a characterization in terms of the dimension, and obtain a complete classification. We also discuss known, new and open cases from the point of view of Shimura varieties/Rapoport-Zink spaces.

Cordial elements and dimensions of affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties

The affine Deligne-Lusztig variety $X_w(b)$ in the affine flag variety of a reductive group $\mathbb G$ depends on two parameters: the $σ$-conjugacy class $[b]$ and the element $w$ in the Iwahori-Weyl group $\tilde W$ of $\mathbb G$. In this paper, for any given $σ$-conjugacy class $[b]$, we determine the nonemptiness pattern and the dimension formula of $X_w(b)$ for most $w \in \tilde W$.

Fine Deligne-Lusztig varieties and Arithmetic Fundamental Lemmas

We prove a character formula for some closed fine Deligne-Lusztig varieties. We apply it to compute fixed points for fine Deligne-Lusztig varieties arising from the basic loci of Shimura varieties of Coxeter type. As an application, we prove an arithmetic intersection formula for certain diagonal cycles on unitary and GSpin Rapoport-Zink spaces arising from the arithmetic Gan-Gross-Prasad conjectures. In particular, we prove the arithmetic fundamental lemma in the minuscule case, without assumptions on the residual characteristic.

Flag manifolds over semifields

In this paper, we develop the theory of flag manifold over a semifield for any Kac-Moody root datum. We show that the flag manifold over a semifield admits a natural action of the monoid over that semifield associated with the Kac-Moody datum and admits a cellular decomposition. This extends the previous work of Lusztig, Postnikov, Rietsch and others on the totally nonnegative flag manifolds (of finite type) and the work of Lusztig, Speyer, Williams on the tropical flag manifolds (of finite type). As a by-product, we prove a conjecture of Lusztig on the duality of totally nonnegative flag manifold of finite type.

Partial orders on conjugacy classes in the Weyl group and on unipotent conjugacy classes

Let $G$ be a reductive group over an algebraically closed field and let $W$ be its Weyl group. In a series of papers, Lusztig introduced a map from the set $[W]$ of conjugacy classes of $W$ to the set $[G_u]$ of unipotent classes of $G$. This map, when restricted to the set of elliptic conjugacy classes $[W_e]$ of $W$, is injective. In this paper, we show that Lusztig's map $[W_e] \to [G_u]$ is order-reversing, with respect to the natural partial order on $[W_e]$ arising from combinatorics and the natural partial order on $[G_u]$ arising from geometry.

Cocenter of $p$-adic groups, II: induction map

In this paper, we study some relation between the cocenter $\bar H(G)$ of the Hecke algebra $H(G)$ of a connected reductive group $G$ over an nonarchimedean local field and the cocenter $\bar H(M)$ of its Levi subgroups $M$. Given any Newton component of $\bar H(G)$, we construct the induction map $\bar i$ from the corresponding Newton component of $\bar H(M)$ to it. We show that this map is surjective. This leads to the Bernstein-Lusztig type presentation of the cocenter $\bar H(G)$, which generalizes the work \cite{HN2} on the affine Hecke algebras. We also show that the map $\bar i$ we constructed is adjoint to the Jacquet functor and in characteristic $0$, the map $\bar i$ is an isomorphism.

Lifting of elements of Weyl groups

Suppose $G$ is a reductive algebraic group, $T$ is a Cartan subgroup, $N=\text{Norm}(T)$, and $W=N/T$ is the Weyl group. If $w\in W$ has order $d$, it is natural to ask about the orders lifts of $w$ to $N$. It is straightforward to see that the minimal order of a lift of $w$ has order $d$ or $2d$, but it can be a subtle question which holds. We first consider the question of when $W$ itself lifts to a subgroup of $N$ (in which case every element of $W$ lifts to an element of $N$ of the same order). We then consider two natural classes of elements: regular and elliptic. In the latter case all lifts of $w$ are conjugate, and therefore have the same order. We also consider the twisted case.

Cocenters and representations of affine $0$-Hecke algebras

In this paper, we study the relation between the cocenter $\overline{\tilde \ch_0}$ and the finite dimensional representations of an affine $0$-Hecke algebra $\tilde \ch_0$. As a consequence, we obtain a new criterion on the supersingular modules: a (virtual) module of $\tilde \ch_0$ is supersingular if and only if its character vanishes on the non-supersingular part of $\overline{\tilde \ch_0}$.

Kottwitz-Rapoport conjecture on unions of affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties

In this paper, we prove a conjecture of Kottwitz and Rapoport on a union of (generalized) affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties $X(μ, b)_J$ for any tamely ramified group $G$ and its parahoric subgroup $P_J$. We show that $X(μ, b)_J \neq \emptyset$ if and only if the group-theoretic version of Mazur's inequality is satisfied. In the process, we obtain a generalization of Grothendieck's conjecture on the closure relation of $\s$-conjugacy classes of a twisted loop group.

Projected Richardson varieties and affine Schubert varieties

Let $G$ be a complex quasi-simple algebraic group and $G/P$ be a partial flag variety. The projections of Richardson varieties from the full flag variety form a stratification of $G/P$. We show that the closure partial order of projected Richardson varieties agrees with that of a subset of Schubert varieties in the affine flag variety of $G$. Furthermore, we compare the torus-equivariant cohomology and $K$-theory classes of these two stratifications by pushing or pulling these classes to the affine Grassmannian. Our work generalizes results of Knutson, Lam, and Speyer for the Grassmannian of type $A$.

Stratifications in the reduction of Shimura varieties

In the paper four stratifications in the reduction modulo $p$ of a general Shimura variety are studied: the Newton stratification, the Kottwitz-Rapoport stratification, the Ekedahl-Oort stratification and the Ekedahl-Kottwitz-Oort-Rapoport stratification. We formulate a system of axioms and show that these imply non-emptiness statements and closure relation statements concerning these various stratifications. These axioms are satisfied in the Siegel case.

The cocenter-representation duality

Affine Hecke algebras arise naturally in the study of smooth representations of reductive $p$-adic groups. Finite dimensional complex representations of affine Hecke algebras (under some restriction on the isogeny class and the parameter function) has been studied by many mathematicians, including Kazhdan-Lusztig \cite{KL}, Ginzburg \cite{CG}, Lusztig \cite{L1}, Reeder \cite{Re}, Opdam-Solleveld \cite{OS}, Kato \cite{Kat}, etc. The approaches are either geometric or analytic. In this note, we'll discuss a different route, via the so-called "cocenter-representation duality", to study finite dimensional representations of affine Hecke algebras (for arbitrary isogeny class and for a generic complex parameter). This route is more algebraic, and allows us to work with complex parameters, instead of equal parameters or positive parameters. We also expect that it can be eventually applied to the "modular case" (for representations over fields of positive characteristic and for parameter equal to a root of unity).

$P$-alcoves, parabolic subalgebras and cocenters of affine Hecke algebras

This is a continuation of the sequence of papers \cite{HN2}, \cite{H99} in the study of the cocenters and class polynomials of affine Hecke algebras $\ch$ and their relation to affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties. Let $w$ be a $P$-alcove element, as introduced in \cite{GHKR} and \cite{GHN}. In this paper, we study the image of $T_w$ in the cocenter of $\ch$. In the process, we obtain a Bernstein presentation of the cocenter of $\ch$. We also obtain a comparison theorem among the class polynomials of $\ch$ and of its parabolic subalgebras, which is analogous to the Hodge-Newton decomposition theorem for affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties. As a consequence, we present a new proof of \cite{GHKR} and \cite{GHN} on the emptiness pattern of affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties.

Basic loci in Shimura varieties of Coxeter type

This paper is a contribution to the general problem of giving an explicit description of the basic locus in the reduction modulo $p$ of Shimura varieties. Motivated by \cite{Vollaard-Wedhorn} and \cite{Rapoport-Terstiege-Wilson}, we classify the cases where the basic locus is (in a natural way) the union of classical Deligne-Lusztig sets associated to Coxeter elements. We show that if this is satisfied, then the Newton strata and Ekedahl-Oort strata have many nice properties.

Geometric and homological properties of affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties

This paper studies affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties $X_{\tw}(b)$ in the affine flag variety of a quasi-split tamely ramified group. We describe the geometric structure of $X_{\tw}(b)$ for a minimal length element $\tw$ in the conjugacy class of an extended affine Weyl group, generalizing one of the main results in \cite{HL} to the affine case. We then provide a reduction method that relates the structure of $X_{\tw}(b)$ for arbitrary elements $\tw$ in the extended affine Weyl group to those associated with minimal length elements. Based on this reduction, we establish a connection between the dimension of affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties and the degree of the class polynomial of affine Hecke algebras. As a consequence, we prove a conjecture of Görtz, Haines, Kottwitz and Reuman in \cite{GHKR}.

Green polynomials of Weyl groups, elliptic pairings, and the extended Dirac index

We provide a direct connection between Springer theory, via Green polynomials, the irreducible representations of the pin cover $\wti W$, a certain double cover of the Weyl group $W$, and an extended Dirac operator for graded Hecke algebras. Our approach leads to a new and uniform construction of the irreducible genuine $\wti W$-characters. In the process, we give a construction of the action by an outer automorphism of the Dynkin diagram on the cohomology groups of Springer theory, and we also introduce a $q$-elliptic pairing for $W$ with respect to the reflection representation $V$. These constructions are of independent interest. The $q$-elliptic pairing is a generalization of the elliptic pairing of $W$ introduced by Reeder, and it is also related to S. Kato's notion of (graded) Kostka systems for the semidirect product $A_W=\bC[W]\ltimes S(V)$.

On orbits in double flag varieties for symmetric pairs

Let $ G $ be a connected, simply connected semisimple algebraic group over the complex number field, and let $ K $ be the fixed point subgroup of an involutive automorphism of $ G $ so that $ (G, K) $ is a symmetric pair. We take parabolic subgroups $ P $ of $ G $ and $ Q $ of $ K $ respectively and consider the product of partial flag varieties $ G/P $ and $ K/Q $ with diagonal $ K $-action, which we call a \emph{double flag variety for symmetric pair}. It is said to be \emph{of finite type} if there are only finitely many $ K $-orbits on it. In this paper, we give a parametrization of $ K $-orbits on $ G/P \times K/Q $ in terms of quotient spaces of unipotent groups without assuming the finiteness of orbits. If one of $ P \subset G $ or $ Q \subset K $ is a Borel subgroup, the finiteness of orbits is closely related to spherical actions. In such cases, we give a complete classification of double flag varieties of finite type, namely, we obtain classifications of $ K $-spherical flag varieties $ G/P $ and $ G $-spherical homogeneous spaces $ G/Q $.

$P$-alcoves and nonemptiness of affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties

We study affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties in the affine flag manifold of an algebraic group, and in particular the question, which affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties are non-empty. Under mild assumptions on the group, we provide a complete answer to this question in terms of the underlying affine root system. In particular, this proves the corresponding conjecture for split groups stated in Görtz et al. (2010). The question of non-emptiness of affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties is closely related to the relationship between certain natural stratifications of moduli spaces of abelian varieties in positive characteristic.

Elements with finite Coxeter part in an affine Weyl group

Let $W_a$ be an affine Weyl group and $η:W_a\longrightarrow W_0$ be the natural projection to the corresponding finite Weyl group. We say that $w\in W_a$ has finite Coxeter part if $η(w)$ is conjugate to a Coxeter element of $W_0$. The elements with finite Coxeter part is a union of conjugacy classes of $W_a$. We show that for each conjugacy class $\mathcal{O}$ of $W_a$ with finite Coxeter part there exits a unique maximal proper parabolic subgroup $W_J$ of $W_a$, such that the set of minimal length elements in $\mathcal{O}$ is exactly the set of Coxeter elements in $W_J$. Similar results hold for twisted conjugacy classes.

A generalization of Steinberg's cross-section

Let G be a semisimple group over an algebraically closed field. Steinberg has associated to a Coxeter element w of minimal length r a subvariety V of G isomorphic to an affine space of dimension r which meets the regular unipotent class Y in exactly one point. In this paper this is generalized to the case where w is replaced by any elliptic element in the Weyl group of minimal length d in its conjugacy class, V is replaced by a subvariety V' of G isomorphic to an affine space of dimension d and Y is replaced by a unipotent class Y' of codimension d in such a way that the intersection of V' and Y' is finite.

Closure of Steinberg fibers and affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties

We discuss some connections between the closure $\bar F$ of a Steinberg fiber in the wonderful compactification of an adjoint group and the affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties $X_w(1)$ in the affine flag variety. Among other things, we describe the emptiness/nonemptiness pattern of $X_w(1)$ if the translation part of $w$ is quasi-regular. As a by-product, we give a new proof of the explicit description of $\bar F$, first obtained in \cite{H1}.

Dimensions of affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties in affine flag varieties

Affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties are analogs of Deligne-Lusztig varieties in the context of an affine root system. We prove a conjecture stated in the paper arXiv:0805.0045v4 by Haines, Kottwitz, Reuman, and the first named author, about the question which affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties (for a split group and a basic $σ$-conjugacy class) in the Iwahori case are non-empty. If the underlying algebraic group is a classical group and the chosen basic $σ$-conjugacy class is the class of $b=1$, we also prove the dimension formula predicted in op. cit. in almost all cases.
