Deciphering the nature of X(3872) in heavy ion collisions

Exploring the nature of exotic multiquark candidates such as the $X(3872)$ plays a pivotal role in understanding quantum chromodynamics (QCD). Despite significant efforts, consensus on their internal structures is still lacking. As a prime example, it remains a pressing open question to decipher the $X(3872)$ state between two popular exotic configurations: a loose hadronic molecule or a compact tetraquark. We demonstrate a novel approach to help address this problem by studying the $X(3872)$ production in heavy ion collisions, where a hot fireball with ample light as well as charm (anti-)quarks is available for producing the exotics. Adopting a multiphase transport model (AMPT) for describing such collisions and implementing appropriate production mechanism of either molecule or tetraquark picture, we compute and compare a series of observables for $X(3872)$ in Pb-Pb collisions at the Large Hadron Collider. We find the fireball volume plays a crucial role, leading to a 2-order-of-magnitude difference in the $X(3872)$ yield and a markedly different centrality dependence between hadronic molecules and compact tetraquarks, thus offering a unique opportunity for distinguishing the two scenarios. We also make the first prediction of $X(3872)$ elliptic flow coefficient to be tested by future experimental measurements.

The production of doubly charmed exotic hadrons in heavy ion collisions

Hadron spectroscopy provides direct physical measurements that shed light on the non-perturbative behavior of quantum chromodynamics (QCD). In particular, various exotic hadrons such as the newly observed $T_{cc}^+$ by the LHCb collaboration, offer unique insights on the QCD dynamics in hadron structures. In this letter, we demonstrate how heavy ion collisions can serve as a powerful venue for hadron spectroscopy study of doubly charmed exotic hadrons by virtue of the extremely charm-rich environment created in such collisions. The yields of $T_{cc}^+$ as well as its potential isospin partners are computed within the molecular picture for Pb-Pb collisions at center-of-mass energy $2.76~\mathrm{TeV}$. We find about three-order-of-magnitude enhancement in the production of $T_{cc}^+$ in Pb-Pb collisions as compared with the yield in proton-proton collisions, with a moderately smaller enhancement in the yields of the isospin partners $T_{cc}^0$ and $T_{cc}^{++}$. The $T_{cc}^+$ yield is comparable to that of the $X(3872)$ in the most central collisions while shows a considerably stronger decrease toward peripheral collisions, due to a "threshold" effect of the required double charm quarks for $T_{cc}^+$. Final results for their rapidity and transverse momentum $p_T$ dependence as well as the elliptic flow coefficient are reported and can be tested by future experimental measurements.

Extracting the jet transport coefficient of cold nuclear matter from world data

We present the first global extraction of the jet transport coefficient ($\hat q$) for cold nuclear matter within the framework of higher-twist expansion. The analysis takes into account the world data on transverse momentum broadening in semi-inclusive $e$-A deep inelastic scattering (DIS) and in Drell-Yan dilepton and heavy quarkonium production in $p$-A collisions, as well as the nuclear modification of the structure functions in DIS. The results of this work provide the first quantitative evidence for the universality and non-trivial scale dependence of the medium transport property, similar to that for nucleon structure as encoded in the standard parton distribution functions. We expect the extracted scale dependence of $\hat q$ for cold nuclear matter can be extended to precisely identify the fundamental property of quark gluon plasma.

Magnetic Field in the Charged Subatomic Swirl

We report a novel relation between rotation and magnetic field in a charged fluid system: there is naturally a magnetic field along the direction of fluid vorticity due to the currents associated with the swirling charges. This general connection is demonstrated using a fluid vortex. Applying the idea to heavy ion collisions we propose a new mechanism for generating in-medium magnetic field with a relatively long lifetime. We estimate the magnitude of this new magnetic field in the Au-Au colliding systems across a wide span of collisional beam energy. Such a magnetic field is found to increase rapidly toward lower beam energy and could account for a significant amount of the experimentally observed global polarization difference between hyperons and anti-hyperons.

Radial distribution of charm quarks in jets in high-energy heavy-ion collisions

Heavy flavor physics in high-energy heavy-ion collisions is a promising and active area to study the mass dependence of the "jet quenching" effects both at the RHIC and the LHC. In this talk, we present the first theoretical study on the $D^0$ meson radial distributions relative to the jet axis both in p+p and Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=5.02$ TeV, where a nice agreement of our results with experimental data is observed. The in-medium parton propagations are described by a Monte Carlo transport model which uses the next-to-leading order (NLO) plus parton shower (PS) event generator SHERPA as input and includes elastic (collisional) and inelastic (radiative) in-medium interaction of heavy flavor jet. We find that, at low $D^0$ meson $p_T$, the radial distribution significantly shifts to larger radius indicating a strong diffusion effect, and the diffusion effects decrease quickly with $p_T$ ,which is consistent with the recent CMS measurements. We demonstrate that the angular deviation of charm quarks is sensitive to $D_s$ but not $\hat{q}$, which may provide new constrains on the collisional and radiative heavy quark energy loss.

Radial profile of heavy quarks in jets in high-energy nuclear collisions

In high energy nuclear collisions, heavy flavor tagged jets are useful hard probes to study the properties of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP). In this talk, we present the first theoretical prediction of the $D^0$ meson radial distributions in jets relative to the jet axis both in p+p and Pb+Pb collisions at $5.02$ TeV, it shows a nice agreement with the available experimental data. The in-medium jet evolution in the study is described by a Monte Carlo transport model which has been incorporated with the initial events as input provided by the next-to-leading order (NLO) plus parton shower (PS) event generator SHERPA. In such evolution process, both elastic and inelastic parton energy loss in the hot and dense medium are taken into account. Within this same simulation framework, we predict different modification patterns of the radial profile of charm and bottom quarks in jets in Pb+Pb collisions: jet quenching effect will lead the charm quarks diffuse to lager radius while lead the bottom quarks distributed closer to jet axis.

Selected topics of quantum computing for nuclear physics

Nuclear physics, whose underling theory is described by quantum gauge field coupled with matter, is fundamentally important and yet is formidably challenge for simulation with classical computers. Quantum computing provides a perhaps transformative approach for studying and understanding nuclear physics. With rapid scaling-up of quantum processors as well as advances on quantum algorithms, the digital quantum simulation approach for simulating quantum gauge fields and nuclear physics has gained lots of attentions. In this review, we aim to summarize recent efforts on solving nuclear physics with quantum computers. We first discuss a formulation of nuclear physics in the language of quantum computing. In particular, we review how quantum gauge fields~(both Abelian and non-Abelian) and its coupling to matter field can be mapped and studied on a quantum computer. We then introduce related quantum algorithms for solving static properties and real-time evolution for quantum systems, and show their applications for a broad range of problems in nuclear physics, including simulation of lattice gauge field, solving nucleon and nuclear structure, quantum advantage for simulating scattering in quantum field theory, non-equilibrium dynamics, and so on. Finally, a short outlook on future work is given.

Spin Hydrodynamic Generation in the Charged Subatomic Swirl

Recently there have been significant interests in the spin hydrodynamic generation phenomenon from multiple disciplines of physics. Such phenomenon arises from global polarization effect of microscopic spin by macroscopic fluid rotation and is expected to occur in the hot quark-gluon fluid (the ``subatomic swirl'') created in relativistic nuclear collisions. This was indeed discovered in experiments which however revealed an intriguing puzzle: a polarization difference between particles and anti-particles. We suggest a novel application of a general connection between rotation and magnetic field: a magnetic field naturally arises along the fluid vorticity in the charged subatomic swirl. We establish this mechanism as a new way for generating long-lived in-medium magnetic field in heavy ion collisions. Due to its novel feature, this new magnetic field provides a nontrivial explanation to the puzzling observation of a difference in spin hydrodynamic generation for particles and anti-particles in heavy ion collisions.

Transverse Momentum Balance and Angular Distribution of $b\bar{b}$ Dijets in Pb+Pb collisions

The productions of inclusive b-jet and $b\bar{b}$ dijets in Pb+Pb collisions have been investigated by considering the heavy quark and the light quark in-medium evolution simultaneously. The initial hard processes of inclusive b-jet and $b\bar{b}$ dijets productions are described by a next-to-leading order (NLO) plus parton shower Monte Carlo (MC) event generator SHERPA which can be well-matched with the experimental data in p+p collisions. The framework combines the Langevin transport model to describe the evolution of the bottom quark also its collisional energy loss and the higher-twist description to consider the radiative energy loss of both the bottom and light quarks. We compare the theoretical simulation of inclusive jet and inclusive b-jet $R_{\rm AA}$ in Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=2.76$ TeV with the experimental data, and then present the theoretical simulation of the momentum balance of the $b\bar{b}$ dijet in Pb+Pb collisions at $5.02$ TeV with the recent CMS data for the first time. A similar trend as that in inclusive dijets has been observed in $b\bar{b}$ dijets, the production distribution is shifted to smaller $x_J$ due to the jet quenching effect. At last, the prediction of the normalized azimuthal angle distribution of the $b\bar{b}$ dijet in Pb+Pb collisions at $5.02$ TeV has been reported. The medium induced energy loss effect of the $b\bar{b}$ dijets will overall suppress its production, but the same side ($Δϕ\to 0$ region) suffers more energy loss than away side ($Δϕ\to π$ region), therefore lead to the suppression on the same side and the enhancement on the away side in the normalized azimuthal angle distribution in A+A collisions.

A global extraction of the jet transport coefficient in cold nuclear matter

Within the framework of the generalized QCD factorization formalism, we perform the first global analysis of the jet transport coefficient ($\hat q$) for cold nuclear matter. The analysis takes into account the world data on transverse momentum broadening in semi-inclusive electron-nucleus deep inelastic scattering, Drell-Yan dilepton and heavy quarkonium production in proton-nucleus collisions, as well as the nuclear modification of the structure functions in deep inelastic scattering, comprising a total of 215 data points from 8 data sets. For the first time, we clarify quantitatively the universality and probing scale dependence of the nuclear medium property as encoded in $\hat q$. We expect that the determined parametrization of $\hat q$ in cold nuclear matter will have significant impact on precise identification of the transport property of hot dense medium created in heavy ion collisions.

Transverse momentum broadening in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering at next-to-leading order

Within the framework of higher-twist collinear factorization, transverse momentum broadening for the final hadrons in semi-inclusive deeply inelastic $e+A$ collisions is studied at the next-to-leading order (NLO) in perturbative QCD. Through explicit calculations of real and virtual corrections at twist-4, the transverse-momentum-weighted differential cross section due to double scattering is shown to factorize at NLO and can be expressed as a convolution of twist-4 nuclear parton correlation functions, the usual twist-2 fragmentation functions and hard parts which are finite and free of any divergences. A QCD evolution equation is also derived for the renormalized twist-4 quark-gluon correlation function which can be applied to future phenomenological studies of transverse momentum broadening and jet quenching at NLO.

$η$ meson production of high-energy nuclear collisions at NLO

The transverse momentum spectrum of $η$ meson in relativistic heavy-ion collisions is studied at the next-to-leading-order (NLO) within the perturbative QCD, where the jet quenching effect in the QGP is incorporated with the effectively medium-modified $η$ fragmentation functions using the higher-twist approach. We show that the theoretical simulations could give nice descriptions of PHENIX data on $η$ meson in both $\rm p+p$ and central $\rm Au+Au$ collisions at the RHIC, and also provide numerical predictions of $η$ spectra in central $\rm Pb+Pb$ collisions with $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=2.76$~TeV at the LHC. The ratios of $η/π^0$ in $\rm p+p$ and in central $\rm Au+Au$ collisions at $200$~GeV are found to overlap in a wide $p_T$ region, which matches well the measured ratio $η/ π^0$ by PHENIX. We demonstrate that, at the asymptotic region when $p_{T} \rightarrow \infty$ the ratios of $η/π^{0}$ in both $\rm Au+Au$ and $\rm p+p$ are almost determined only by quark jets fragmentation and thus approach to the one in $e^{+} e^{-}$ scattering; in addition, the almost identical gluon (quark) contribution fractions to $η$ and to $π$ result in a rather moderate variation of $η/π^{0}$ distribution at intermediate and high $p_T$ region in $\rm A+A$ relative to that in $\rm p+p$; while a slightly higher $η/π^{0}$ at small $p_T$ in $\rm Au+Au$ can be observed due to larger suppression of gluon contribution fraction to $π^{0}$ as compared to the one to $η$. The theoretical prediction for $η/ π^0$ at the LHC has also been presented.

Probing Shadowed Nuclear Sea with Massive Gauge Bosons in the Future Heavy-Ion Collisions

The production of the massive bosons $Z^0$ and $W^{\pm}$ could provide an excellent tool to study cold nuclear matter effects and the modifications of nuclear parton distribution functions (nPDFs) relative to parton distribution functions (PDFs) of a free proton in high energy nuclear reactions at the LHC as well as in heavy-ion collisions (HIC) with much higher center-of mass energies available in the future colliders. In this paper we calculate the rapidity and transverse momentum distributions of the vector boson and their nuclear modification factors in p+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=63$TeV and in Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=39$TeV in the framework of perturbative QCD by utilizing three parametrization sets of nPDFs: EPS09, DSSZ and nCTEQ. It is found that in heavy-ion collisions at such high colliding energies, both the rapidity distribution and the transverse momentum spectrum of vector bosons are considerably suppressed in wide kinematic regions with respect to p+p reactions due to large nuclear shadowing effect. We demonstrate that in the massive vector boson productions processes with sea quarks in the initial-state may give more contributions than those with valence quarks in the initial-state, therefore in future heavy-ion collisions the isospin effect is less pronounced and the charge asymmetry of W boson will be reduced significantly as compared to that at the LHC. Large difference between results with nCTEQ and results with EPS09 and DSSZ is observed in nuclear modifications of both rapidity and $p_T$ distributions of $Z^0$ and $W$ in the future HIC.

Productions of $Z^0$ and $W^+/W^-$ in Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collisions at the LHC

The productions of massive gauge bosons, $Z^0$ and $W^+/W^-$, in heavy-ion reactions at the LHC, provide an excellent tool to study the cold nuclear matter effects in high-energy nuclear collisions. In this paper we investigate $Z^0$ and $W^+/W^-$ productions in p+Pb and Pb+Pb at the LHC, at NLO and NNLO with DYNNLO incorporating the nuclear PDFs (nPDFs) parametrization sets EPS09 and DSSZ, within the framework of perturbative QCD. The numerical simulations of the transverse momentum spectra, rapidity dependence, and related nuclear modification factors for $Z^0$ and $W$ particles, as well as the charge asymmetry for W boson, are provided and tested against the latest experimental data. It is found that the theoretical results with EPS09 and DSSZ nPDFs can give good descriptions of the recent data on $Z^0$ and $W^{\pm}$ particles in p+Pb and Pb+Pb within the experimental error bars, though some differences between results with EPS09 and DSSZ can be observed, especially in the rapidity dependence of the $Z^0$ yield. Theoretical predictions for future measurements on $Z^0$ and $W$ in p+Pb and Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC are also provided.

Quantifying jet transport properties via large $p_T$ hadron production

Nuclear modification factor $R_{AA}$ for large $p_T$ single hadron is studied in a next-to-leading order (NLO) perturbative QCD (pQCD) parton model with medium-modified fragmentation functions (mFFs) due to jet quenching in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. The energy loss of the hard partons in the QGP is incorporated in the mFFs which utilize two most important parameters to characterize the transport properties of the hard parton jets: the jet transport parameter $\hat q_{0}$ and the mean free path $λ_{0}$, both at the initial time $τ_0$. A phenomenological study of the experimental data for $R_{AA}(p_{T})$ is performed to constrain the two parameters with simultaneous $χ^2/{\rm d.o.f}$ fits to RHIC as well as LHC data. We obtain for energetic quarks $\hat q_{0}\approx 1.1 \pm 0.2$ GeV$^2$/fm and $λ_{0}\approx 0.4 \pm 0.03$ fm in central $Au+Au$ collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$ GeV, while $\hat q_{0}\approx 1.7 \pm 0.3$ GeV$^2$/fm, and $λ_{0}\approx 0.5 \pm 0.05$ fm in central $Pb+Pb$ collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=2.76$ TeV. Numerical analysis shows that the best fit favors a multiple scattering picture for the energetic jets propagating through the bulk medium, with a moderate averaged number of gluon emissions. Based on the best constraints for $λ_{0}$ and $τ_0$, the estimated value for the mean-squared transverse momentum broadening is moderate which implies that the hard jets go through the medium with small reflection.

Flow Effects on Jet Energy Loss with Detailed Balance

In the presence of collective flow a new model potential describing the interaction of the hard jet with scattering centers is derived based on the static color-screened Yukawa potential. The flow effect on jet quenching with detailed balance is investigated in pQCD. It turns out, considering the collective flow with velocity $v_z$ along the jet direction, the collective flow decreases the LPM destructive interference comparing to that in the static medium. The gluon absorption plays a more important role in the moving medium. The collective flow increases the energy gain from gluon absorption, however, decreases the energy loss from gluon radiation, which is $(1 - v_z )$ times as that in the static medium to the first order of opacity. In the presence of collective flow, the second order in opacity correction is relatively small compared to the first order. So that the total effective energy loss is decreased. The flow dependence of the energy loss will affect the suppression of high $p_T$ hadron spectrum and anisotropy parameter $v_2$ in high-energy heavy-ion collisions.

Multiple scattering effects on heavy meson production in p+A collisions at backward rapidity

We study the incoherent multiple scattering effects on heavy meson production in the backward rapidity region of p+A collisions within the generalized high-twist factorization formalism. We calculate explicitly the double scattering contributions to the heavy meson differential cross sections by taking into account both initial-state and final-state interactions, and find that these corrections are positive. We further evaluate the nuclear modification factor for muons that come form the semi-leptonic decays of heavy flavor mesons. Phenomenological applications in d+Au collisions at a center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV at RHIC and in p+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s}=5.02$ TeV at the LHC are presented. We find that incoherent multiple scattering can describe rather well the observed nuclear enhancement in the intermediate $p_T$ region for such reactions.

Next-to-Leading QCD Factorization for Semi-Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering at Twist-4

Within the framework of a high-twist approach, we calculate the next-to-leading order (NLO) perturbative QCD corrections to the transverse momentum broadening in semi-inclusive hadron production in deeply inelastic $e+A$ collisions, as well as lepton pair production in $p+A$ collisions. With explicit calculations of both real and virtual contributions, we verify, for the first time, the factorization theorem at twist 4 in NLO for the nuclear-enhanced transverse momentum weighted differential cross section and demonstrate the universality of the associated twist-4 quark-gluon correlation function. We also identify the QCD evolution equation for the twist-4 quark-gluon correlation function in a large nucleus, which can be solved to determine the scale dependence of the jet transport parameter in the study of jet quenching.

Transverse momentum broadening at NLO and QCD evolution of $\hat q$

Within the framework of a high-twist approach, we show the first complete next-to-leading order calculation of transverse momentum broadening in semi-inclusive deeply inelastic $e+A$ scattering and Drell-Yan dilepton production in $p+A$ collisions. We demonstrate at one-loop level how QCD factorization holds for multiple scattering in nuclear medium, and the university of the associated quark-gluon correlation function. Our calculation also identifies QCD evolution equation for the quark-gluon correlation function, which determines the QCD factorization scale and energy dependence of jet transport parameter $\hat q$.

Cold Nuclear Matter Effects on Dijet Productions in Relativistic Heavy-ion Reactions at LHC

We investigate the cold nuclear matter(CNM) effects on dijet productions in high-energy nuclear collisions at LHC with the next-to-leading order perturbative QCD. The nuclear modifications for dijet angular distributions, dijet invariant mass spectra, dijet transverse momentum spectra and dijet momentum imbalance due to CNM effects are calculated by incorporating EPS, EKS, HKN and DS param-etrization sets of parton distributions in nucleus . It is found that dijet angular distributions and dijet momentum imbalance are insensitive to the initial-state CNM effects and thus provide optimal tools to study the final-state hot QGP effects such as jet quenching. On the other hand, the invariant mass spectra and the transverse momentum spectra of dijet are generally enhanced in a wide region of the invariant mass or transverse momentum due to CNM effects with a feature opposite to the expected suppression because of the final-state parton energy loss effect in the QGP. The difference of EPS, EKS, HKN and DS parametrization sets of nuclear parton distribution functions is appreciable for dijet invariant mass spectra and transverse momentum spectra at p+Pb collisions, and becomes more pronounced for those at Pb+Pb reactions.

Jet probes of QCD matter: single jets and dijets in heavy-ion collisions

Modifications of jets in the existence of a hot and dense QCD medium have recently attracted a lot of attentions. In this talk, we demonstrate how jet-medium interactions change the behavior of jets by offering examples of inclusive jet and dijet productions at $ {\cal O}(α_s^3)$ in heavy ion collisions including initial-state cold nuclear effects and especially the final-state parton energy loss effect. The suppression of inclusive jet spectrum varying with jet radii and a flatter dijet momentum imbalance as compared to those in hadron-hadron collisions are observed in high-energy nuclear collisions.

Parton energy loss in cold nuclei

Within the generalized high-twist factorization formalism, we express the contribution from multiple parton scattering and induced gluon radiation to the DY dilepton spectra in terms of nuclear modified effective beam quark distribution function. We show that beam quark energy loss is characterized by jet transport parameter $\hat{q}$, which is related to the local gluon density of the medium. Using the value of $\hat{q}$ determined from the deeply inelastic scattering (DIS) data, we evaluate the nuclear modification factor in Drell-Yan process in p+A collisions. Effects of parton energy loss in the DY spectra are found negligible in the Fermilab experimental data at $E_{\rm lab}=800$ GeV relative to parton shadowing while the predicted suppression of DY spectra are significant at $E_{\rm lab}=120$ GeV.

We present selected results for the modification of jet cross sections and related observables in the ambiance of hot and/or dense nuclear medium. Transverse momentum imbalance of back-to-back particle production in p+A and e+A collisions

We study the nuclear enhancement of the transverse momentum imbalance for back-to-back particle production in both p+A and e+A collisions. Specifically, we present results for photon+jet and photon+hadron production in p+A collisions, di-jet and di-hadron production in e+A collisions, and heavy-quark and heavy-meson pair production in both p+A and e+A collisions. We evaluate the effect of both initial-state and final-state multiple scattering, which determine the strength of the nuclear-induced transverse momentum imbalance in these processes. We give theoretical predictions for the experimentally relevant kinematic regions in d+Au collisions at RHIC, p+Pb collisions at LHC and e+A collisions at the future EIC and LHeC.

An Explanation for Heavy Quark Energy Loss Puzzle by Flow Effects

The heavy quark energy loss puzzle is explained by collective flow effects in a dynamic medium. The dead cone and LPM effect are found to be changed comparing to the static medium case. Instead of only one dead cone in the static medium, the collective flow induces two dead cones from two different kinds of processes. One is from the projectile emitting gluon process, the same as that in the static medium. The other is from the gluon emission off the exchanged gluon process, decreasing with increasing flow velocity $v_z$ along jet direction, which lead to the increase of heavy quark energy loss. The differences of the effective average energy loss among charm, bottom and light quarks are very little from a full 3D ideal hydrodynamic simulation for 0-10$%$ central Au-Au collisions at RHIC energy. This would yield similar high $p_{T}$ suppressions between light and heavy quarks for central Au-Au collisions.

Flow Effects on Jet quenching with Detailed Balance

A new model potential in the presence of collective flow describing the interaction of the hard jet with scattering centers is derived based on the static color-screened Yukawa potential. The flow effect on jet quenching with detailed balance is investigated in pQCD. It turns out that the collective flow changes the emission current and the LPM destructive interference comparing to that in the static medium. Considering the collective flow with velocity v_z along the jet direction, the energy loss is (1 - v_z) times that in the static medium to the first order of opacity. The flow dependence of the energy loss will affect the suppression of high p_T hadron spectrum and anisotropy parameter v_2 in high-energy heavy-ion collisions.

Parton Energy Loss and Modified Beam Quark Distribution Functions in Drell-Yan Process in p+A Collisions

Within the framework of generalized collinear factorization in perturbative QCD (pQCD), we study the effect of initial multiple parton scattering and induced parton energy loss in Drell-Yan (DY) process in proton-nucleus collisions. We express the contribution from multiple parton scattering and induced gluon radiation to the DY dilepton spectra in terms of nuclear modified effective beam quark distribution functions. The modification depends on the quark transport parameter in nuclear medium. This is similar to the final-state multiple parton scattering in deeply inelastic scattering (DIS) off large nuclei and leads to the suppression of the Drell-Yan cross section in $p+A$ relative to $p+p$ collisions. With the value of quark transport parameter determined from the nuclear modification of single-inclusive DIS hadron spectra as measured by the HERMES experiment, we calculate DY spectra in $p+A$ collisions and find the nuclear suppression due to beam parton energy loss negligible at the Fermilab energy $E_{\rm lab}$=800 GeV in the kinematic region as covered by the E866 experiment. Most of the observed nuclear suppression of DY spectra in E866 experiment can be described well by parton shadowing in target nuclei as given by the EPS08 parameterization. The effect of beam parton energy loss, however, becomes significant for DY lepton pairs with large beam parton momentum fraction $x^{\prime}$ or small target parton momentum fraction $x$. We also predict the DY cross section in $p+A$ collisions at lower beam proton energy $E_{\rm lab}$=120 GeV and show significant suppression due to initial state parton energy loss at moderately large $x^{\prime}$ where the effect of parton shadowing is very small.

Suppression of high $p_{T}$ hadrons in $Pb+Pb$ Collisions at LHC

Nuclear modification factor $R_{AA}(p_{T})$ for large transverse momentum pion spectra in $Pb+Pb$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=2.76$ TeV is predicted within the NLO perturbative QCD parton model. Effect of jet quenching is incorporated through medium modified fragmentation functions within the higher-twist approach. The jet transport parameter that controls medium modification is proportional to the initial parton density and the coefficient is fixed by the RHIC data on suppression of large $p_{T}$ hadron spectra. Data on charged hadron multiplicity $dN_{ch}/dη=1584 \pm 80$ in central $Pb+Pb$ collisions from the ALICE Experiment at the LHC are used to constrain the initial parton density both for determining the jet transport parameter and the 3+1D ideal hydrodynamic evolution of the bulk matter that is employed for the calculation of $R_{PbPb}(p_{T})$ for neutral pions.

Bulk matter evolution and extraction of jet transport parameter in heavy-ion collisions at RHIC

Within the picture of jet quenching induced by multiple parton scattering and gluon bremsstrahlung, medium modification of parton fragmentation functions and therefore the suppression of large transverse momentum hadron spectra are controlled by both the value and the space-time profile of the jet transport parameter along the jet propagation path. Experimental data on single hadron suppression in high-energy heavy-ion collisions at the RHIC energy are analyzed within the higher-twist (HT) approach to the medium modified fragmentation functions and the next-to-leading order (NLO) perturbative QCD (pQCD) parton model. Assuming that the jet transport parameter $\hat q$ is proportional to the particle number density in both QGP and hadronic phase, experimental data on jet quenching in deeply inelastic scattering (DIS) off nuclear targets can provide guidance on $\hat q_{h}$ in the hot hadronic matter. One can then study the dependence of extracted initial value of jet quenching parameter $\hat q_{0}$ at initial time $τ_{0}$ on the bulk medium evolution. Effects of transverse expansion, radial flow, phase transition and non-equilibrium evolution are examined. The extracted values are found to vary from $\hat q_{0}τ_{0}= 0.54$ GeV$^{2}$ in the (1+3)d ideal hydrodynamic model to 0.96 GeV$^{2}$ in a cascade model, with the main differences coming from the initial non-equilibrium evolution and the later hadronic evolution. The overall contribution to jet quenching from the hadronic phase, about 22-44%, is found to be significant. Therefore, realistic description of the early non-equilibrium parton evolution and later hadronic interaction will be critical for accurate extraction of the jet transport parameter in the strongly interacting QGP phase in high-energy heavy-ion collisions.

Evolution Effects on Parton Energy Loss with Detailed Balance

The initial conditions in the chemical non-equilibrated medium and Bjorken expanding medium at RHIC are determined. With a set of rate equations describing the chemical equilibration of quarks and gluons based on perturbative QCD, we investigate the consequence for parton evolution at RHIC. With considering parton evolution, it is shown that the Debye screening mass and the inverse mean free-path of gluons reduce with increasing proper time in the QGP medium. The parton evolution affects the parton energy loss with detailed balance, both parton energy loss from stimulated emission in the chemical non-equilibrated expanding medium and in Bjorken expanding medium are linear dependent on the propagating distance rather than square dependent in the static medium. The energy absorption can not be neglected at intermediate jet energies and small propagating distance of the energetic parton in contrast with that it is important only at intermediate jet energy in the static medium. This will increase the energy and propagating distance dependence of the parton energy loss and will affect the shape of suppression of moderately high P_T hadron spectra.

Photon Radiation and Dilepton Production Induced by Rescattering in Strong Interacting Medium

Using the opacity expansion technique we investigate the photon radiation and dilepton production induced by multiple rescattering as energetic parton jet passing through the strong interacting medium. The real photon radiation and dilepton invariant-mass spectrums of the bremsstrahlung contribution from an energetic quark jet are presented. The leading contribution of total energy loss by photon emmision in medium of a higher energy quark jet is found to be proportional to the jet energy and has a linear dependence on the thickness of the nuclear target. The rescattering contribution for the dilepton is important only for small value of the invariant-mass and for the not so fast jet. The contribution fraction of the dilepton induced by rescattering in medium is found to be nearly a constant when the ratio of jet energy to Debye screening mass $E/μ$ is large.

Modified Fragmentation Function from Quark Recombination

Within the framework of the constituent quark model, it is shown that the single hadron fragmentation function of a parton can be expressed as a convolution of shower diquark or triquark distribution function and quark recombination probability, if the interference between amplitudes of quark recombination with different momenta is neglected. The recombination probability is determined by the hadron's wavefunction in the constituent quark model. The shower diquark or triquark distribution functions of a fragmenting jet are defined in terms of overlapping matrices of constituent quarks and parton field operators. They are similar in form to dihadron or trihadron fragmentation functions in terms of parton operator and hadron states. Extending the formalism to the field theory at finite temperature, we automatically derive contributions to the effective single hadron fragmentation function from the recombination of shower and thermal constituent quarks. Such contributions involve single or diquark distribution functions which in turn can be related to diquark or triquark distribution functions via sum rules. We also derive QCD evolution equations for quark distribution functions that in turn determine the evolution of the effective jet fragmentation functions in a thermal medium.

Multiple Parton Scattering in Nuclei: Heavy Quark Energy Loss and Modified Fragmentation Functions

Multiple scattering, induced radiative energy loss and modified fragmentation functions of a heavy quark in nuclear matter are studied within the framework of generalized factorization in perturbative QCD. Modified heavy quark fragmentation functions and energy loss are derived in detail with illustration of the mass dependencies of the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal interference effects and heavy quark energy loss. Due to the quark mass dependence of the gluon formation time, the nuclear size dependencies of nuclear modification of the heavy quark fragmentation function and heavy quark energy loss are found to change from a linear to a quadratic form when the initial energy and momentum scale are increased relative to the quark mass. The radiative energy loss of the heavy quark is also significantly suppressed due to limited cone of gluon radiation imposed by the mass. Medium modification of the heavy quark fragmentation functions is found to be limited to the large $z$ region due to the form of heavy quark fragmentation functions in vacuum.

Evolution of Parton Fragmentation Functions at Finite Temperature

The first order correction to the parton fragmentation functions in a thermal medium is derived in the leading logarithmic approximation in the framework of thermal field theory. The medium-modified evolution equations of the parton fragmentation functions are also derived. It is shown that all infrared divergences, both linear and logarithmic, in the real processes are canceled among themselves and by corresponding virtual corrections. The evolution of the quark number and the energy loss (or gain) induced by the thermal medium are investigated.

Jet Tomography of Hot and Cold Nuclear Matter

Medium modification of parton fragmentation functions induced by multiple scattering and gluon bremsstrahlung is shown to describe the recent HERMES data in deeply inelastic scattering (DIS) very well, providing the first evidence of $A^{2/3}$-dependence of the modification. The energy loss is found to be $<dE/dL> \approx 0.5$ GeV/fm for a 10-GeV quark in a $Au$ nucleus. Including the effect of expansion, analysis of the $π^0$ spectra in central $Au+Au$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=130$ GeV yields an averaged energy loss equivalent to $<dE/dL> \approx 7.3$ GeV/fm in a static medium. Predictions for central $Au+Au$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV are also given.

Interplay of soft and hard processes and hadron $p_T$ spectra in $pA$ and $AA$ collisions

Motivated by a schematic model of multiple parton scattering within the Glauber formalism, the transverse momentum spectra in $pA$ and $AA$ collisions are analyzed in terms of a nuclear modification factor with respect to $pp$ collisions. The existing data at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) energies are shown to be consistent with the picture of Glauber multiple scattering in which the interplay between soft and hard processes and the effect of absorptive processes lead to nontrivial nuclear modification of the particle spectra. Relative to the additive model of incoherent hard scattering, the spectra are enhanced at large $p_T$ (hard) by multiple scattering while suppressed at low $p_T$ (soft) by absorptive correction with the transition occurring at around a scale $p_0\sim 1-2$ GeV/$c$ that separates soft and hard processes. Around the same scale, the $p_T$ spectra in $pp$ collisions also change from an exponential form at low $p_T$ to a power-law behavior at high $p_T$. At very large $p_T\gg p_0$, the nuclear enhancement is shown to decrease like $1/p_T^2$. Implications of these nuclear effects on the study of jet quenching, parton thermalization and collective radial flow in high-energy $AA$ collisions are discussed.

Parton Energy Loss with Detailed Balance

Stimulated gluon emission and thermal absorption in addition to induced radiation are considered for an energetic parton propagating inside a quark- gluon plasma. In the presence of thermal gluons, stimulated emission reduces while absorption increases the parton's energy. The net effect is a reduction of the parton energy loss. Though decreasing asymptotically as $T/E$ with the parton energy, the relative reduction is found to be important for intermediate energies. The modified energy dependence of the energy loss will affect the shape of suppression of moderately high $p_T$ hadrons due to jet quenching in high-energy heavy-ion collisions.
