(3+1)-D viscous hydrodynamics CLVisc at finite net baryon density: identified particle spectra, anisotropic flows and flow fluctuations across BES energies

To study the bulk properties of the quark-gluon-plasma (QGP) produced at the beam energy scan (BES) energies at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), we extend the (3+1)-dimensional viscous hydrodynamics CLVisc to include net baryon number conservation and Israel-Stewart-like equation for baryon diffusion with the NEOS-BQS equation of state, fluctuating initial conditions from Monte-Carlo Glauber model, and the afterburner SMASH. This integrated framework is shown to provide a good description of identified particle spectra, mean transverse momenta and anisotropic flows for different centralities and over a wide range of collision energies (7.7-62.4 GeV). It is found that the mean momenta of identified particles and anisotropic flows increases mildly with the collision energy due to larger radial flow. We further compute the multiple-particle cumulant ratio $v_2\{4\}/v_2\{2\}$ of elliptic flow across BES energies, and find that the relative fluctuations of elliptic flow are insensitive to the collision energy, consistent with the preliminary STAR data. Our model provides a benchmark for understanding the RHIC-BES data and studying the critical properties and phase structure of hot and dense QCD matter.

Heavy and light flavor jet quenching in different collision systems at the LHC energies

Recent experiments have observed large anisotropic collective flows in high multiplicity proton-lead collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), which indicates the possible formation of mini quark-gluon plasma (QGP) in small collision systems. However, no jet quenching has been confirmed in such small systems so far. To understand this intriguing result, the system size scan experiments have been proposed to bridge the gap between large and small systems. In this work, we perform a systematic study on both heavy and light flavor jet quenching in different collision systems at the LHC energies. Using our state-of-the-art jet quenching model, which combines the next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD framework, a linear Boltzmann transport model and the (3+1)-dimensional viscous hydrodynamics simulation, we provide a good description of nuclear modification factor $R_{\rm AA}$ for charged hadrons and $D$ mesons in central and mid-central Pb+Pb and Xe+Xe collisions measured by CMS collaboration. We further predict the transverse momentum and centrality dependences of $R_{AA}$ for charged hadrons, $D$ and $B$ mesons in Pb+Pb, Xe+Xe, Ar+Ar and O+O collisions at the LHC energies. Our numerical results show a clear system size dependence for both light and heavy flavor hadron $R_{AA}$ across different collision systems. Sizable jet quenching effect is obtained for both heavy and light flavor hadrons in central O+O collisions at the LHC energies. Our study provides a significant bridge for jet quenching from large to small systems, and should be helpful for finding the smallest QGP droplet and the disappearance of QGP in relativistic nuclear collisions.

Jet shape and redistribution of the lost energy from jets in Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC in a multiphase transport model

Jet-medium interaction involves two important effects: jet energy loss and medium response. The search for jet-induced medium excitations is one of the hot topics in jet quenching study in relativistic nuclear collisions. In this work, we perform a systematic study on how the lost energy from hard jets evolves with the bulk medium and redistributes in the final state of heavy-ion collisions via a multi-phase transport model. In particular, the ($Δη, Δϕ$) distribution of charged particles with respect to the jet axis and jet shape function are studied for various Pb+Pb collision centralities and for different transverse momentum intervals of charged particles. Our numerical result shows a strong enhancement of soft particles at large angles for Pb+Pb collisions relative to p+p collisions at the LHC, qualitatively consistent with recent CMS data. This indicates that a significant fraction of the lost energy from hard jets is carried by soft particles at large angles away from the jet axis.

Local and global polarization of $Λ$ hyperons across RHIC-BES energies: the roles of spin hall effect, initial condition and baryon diffusion

We perform a systematic study on the local and global spin polarization of $Λ$ and $\overlineΛ$ hyperons in relativistic heavy-ion collisions at beam energy scan energies via the (3+1)-dimensional CLVisc hydrodynamics model with AMPT and SMASH initial conditions. Following the quantum kinetic theory, we decompose the polarization vector as the parts induced by thermal vorticity, shear tensor and the spin Hall effect (SHE). We find that the polarization induced by SHE and the total polarization strongly depends on the initial conditions. At $7.7$GeV, SHE gives a sizeable contribution and even flips the sign of the local polarization along the beam direction for AMPT initial condition, which is not observed for SMASH initial condition. Meanwhile, the local polarization along the out-of-plane direction induced by SHE with AMPT initial condition does not always increase with decreasing collision energies. Next, we find that the polarization along the beam direction is sensitive to the baryon diffusion coefficient, but the local polarization along the out-of-plane direction is not. Our results for the global polarization of $Λ$ and $\overlineΛ$ agree well with the STAR data. Interestingly, the global polarization of $\overlineΛ$ is not always larger than that of $Λ$ due to various competing effects. Our findings are helpful for understanding the polarization phenomenon and the detailed structure of quark-gluon plasma in relativistic heavy-ion collisions.

Perturbative and non-perturbative interactions between heavy quarks and quark-gluon plasma within a unified approach

While perturbative QCD is sufficient for understanding the color, mass and energy dependences of parton energy loss and jet quenching at large transverse momentum in heavy-ion collisions, a simultaneous description of heavy flavor nuclear modification factor $R_\mathrm{AA}$ and elliptic flow coefficient $v_2$ at low and intermediate $p_\mathrm{T}$ still remains a challenge due to the effects from non-perturbative interactions. In this work, we extend the linear Boltzmann transport model by implementing a generalized Cornell-type potential that incorporates both short-range Yukawa interaction and long-range color confining interaction between heavy quarks and the QGP medium. Combining our new approach for heavy-quark-QGP interaction with a (3+1)-dimensional hydrodynamic model CLVisc for the QGP evolution and a hybrid fragmentation-coalescence model for heavy quark hadronization, we obtain a satisfactory description of heavy meson $R_\mathrm{AA}$ and $v_2$ from low to intermediate to high $p_\mathrm{T}$ observed at both RHIC and the LHC. By model-data-comparison, we extract for the first time the in-medium heavy quark potential from open heavy flavor measurements; the result is in agreement with the lattice QCD calculation. Our study indicates that while jet quenching at high $p_\mathrm{T}$ is dominated by perturbative QCD interactions, non-perturbative interactions are indispensible for understanding heavy flavor quenching and flow at low and intermediate $p_\mathrm{T}$.

QLBT: A linear Boltzmann transport model for heavy quarks in a quark-gluon plasma of quasi-particles

We develop a new heavy quark transport model, QLBT, to simulate the dynamical propagation of heavy quarks inside the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) created in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. Our QLBT model is based on the linear Boltzmann transport (LBT) model with the ideal QGP replaced by a collection of quasi-particles to account for the non-perturbative interactions among quarks and gluons of the hot QGP. The thermal masses of quasi-particles are fitted to the equation of state from lattice QCD simulations using the Bayesian statistical analysis method. Combining QLBT with our advanced hybrid fragmentation-coalescence hadronization approach, we calculate the nuclear modification factor $R_\mathrm{AA}$ and the elliptic flow $v_2$ of $D$ mesons at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider and the Large Hadron Collider. By comparing our QLBT calculation to the experimental data on the $D$ meson $R_\mathrm{AA}$ and $v_2$, we extract the heavy quark transport parameter $\hat{q}$ and diffusion coefficient $D_\mathrm{s}$ in the temperature range of $1-4~T_\mathrm{c}$, and compare them with the lattice QCD results and other phenomenological studies.

Charmed hadron chemistry in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

We develop for charmed hadron production in relativistic heavy-ion collisions a comprehensive coalescence model that includes an extensive set of $s$ and $p$-wave hadronic states as well as the strict energy-momentum conservation, which ensures the boost invariance of the coalescence probability and the thermal limit of the produced hadron spectrum. By combining our hadronization scheme with an advanced Langevin-hydrodynamics model that incorporates both elastic and inelastic energy loss of heavy quarks inside the dynamical quark-gluon plasma, we obtain a successful description of the $p_\mathrm{T}$-integrated and differential $Λ_c/D^0$ and $D_s/D^0$ ratios measured at RHIC and the LHC. We find that including the effect of radial flow of the medium is essential for describing the enhanced $Λ_c/D^0$ ratio observed in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. We also find that the puzzling larger $Λ_c/D^0$ ratio observed in Au+Au collisions at RHIC than in Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC is due to the interplay between the effects of the QGP radial flow and the charm quark transverse momentum spectrum at hadronization. Our study further suggests that charmed hadrons have larger sizes in medium than in vacuum.

Longitudinal dependence of B and D meson nuclear modifications in heavy-ion collisions at RHIC and the LHC

It is widely acknowledged that heavy flavor probes are sensitive to the properties of the quark-gluon plasma and are often considered an important tool for the plasma tomography studies. Forward rapidity observables can provide further insight on the dynamics of the medium due to the interplay between the medium size and the differences in the production spectra of heavy quark probes. In this proceedings we present the nuclear modification factor $R_\text{AA}$'s for B and D mesons, as well as heavy flavor leptons, in the rapidity range $-4.0 < y < 4.0$ obtained from relativistic Langevin equation with gluon radiation coupled with a (3+1)-dimensional viscous hydrodynamics medium background. We present comparison with experimental data at mid-rapidity as well as predictions for different rapidity ranges.

Number of constituent quark scaling of elliptic flows in high multiplicity p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$ 5.02 TeV

We briefly summarize our recent study on the number of constituent quark (NCQ) scaling of hadron elliptic flows in high multiplicity p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$ 5.02 TeV. With the inclusion of hadron production via the quark coalescence model at intermediate $p_T$, the viscous hydrodynamics at low $p_T$, and jet fragmentation at high $p_T$, our $Hydro-Coal-Frag$ model provides a nice description of the $p_T$-spectra and differential elliptic flow $v_2(p_T)$ of pions, kaons and protons over the $p_T$ range from 0 to 6 GeV. Our results demonstrate that including the quark coalescence is essential for reproducing the observed approximate NCQ scaling of hadron $v_2$ at intermediate $p_T$ in experiments, indicating strongly the existence of partonic degrees of freedom and the formation of quark-gluon plasma in high multiplicity p--Pb collisions at the LHC.

Probing the partonic degrees of freedom in high multiplicity p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$ 5.02 TeV

We investigate the role of partonic degrees of freedom in high multiplicity p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$ 5.02 TeV carried out at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) by studying the production and collective flow of identified hadrons at intermediate $p_T$ via the coalescence of soft and hard partons generated from viscous hydrodynamics (VISH2+1) and the energy loss model (LBT), respectively. We find that combining the intermediate $p_T$ hadrons from the coalescence with the low $p_T$ hadrons from hydrodynamics and high $p_T$ hadrons from the jet fragmentation, our Hydro-Coal-Frag model provides a nice description of the measured $p_T$-spectra and the differential elliptic flow $v_2(p_T)$ of pions, kaons and protons over the $p_T$ range from 0 to 6 GeV. We further demonstrate the necessity of including the quark coalescence contribution to reproduce the experimentally observed approximate number of constituent quark scaling of hadron $v_2$ at intermediate $p_T$. Our results thus indicate the importance of partonic degrees of freedom and also hint at the possible formation of quark-gluon plasma in high multiplicity p+Pb collisions at the LHC.

The Collectivity of Heavy Mesons in Proton-Nucleus Collisions

Using a model based on the Color Glass Condensate framework and the dilute-dense factorization, we systematically study the azimuthal angular correlations between a heavy flavor meson and a light reference particle in proton-nucleus collisions. The obtained second harmonic coefficients (also known as the elliptic flows) for $J/ψ$ and $D^0$ agree with recent experimental data from the LHC. We also provide predictions for the elliptic flows of $Υ$ and $B$ meson, which can be measured in the near future at the LHC. This work can shed light on the physics origin of the collectivity phenomenon in the collisions of small systems.

Flavor hierarchy of jet quenching in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

Relativistic heavy-ion experiments have observed similar quenching effects for (prompt) $D$ mesons compared to charged hadrons for transverse momenta larger than 6-8~GeV, which remains a mystery since heavy quarks typically lose less energies in quark-gluon plasma than light quarks and gluons. Recent measurements of the nuclear modification factors of $B$ mesons and $B$-decayed $D$ mesons by the CMS Collaboration provide a unique opportunity to study the flavor hierarchy of jet quenching. Using a linear Boltzmann transport model combined with hydrodynamics simulation, we study the energy loss and nuclear modification for heavy and light flavor jets in high-energy nuclear collisions. By consistently taking into account both quark and gluon contributions to light and heavy flavor hadron productions within a next-to-leading order perturbative QCD framework, we obtain, for the first time, a satisfactory description of the experimental data on the nuclear modification factors for charged hadrons, $D$ mesons, $B$ mesons and $B$-decayed $D$ mesons simultaneously over a wide range of transverse momenta (8-300~GeV). This presents a solid solution to the flavor puzzle of jet quenching and constitutes a significant step towards the precision study of jet-medium interaction. Our study predicts that at transverse momenta larger than 30-40~GeV, $B$ mesons also exhibit similar suppression effects to charged hadrons and $D$ mesons, which may be tested by future measurements.

Longitudinal dependence of open heavy flavor $R_\text{AA}$ in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

Heavy flavor probes are sensitive to the properties of the quark gluon plasma (QGP) produced in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. A huge amount of effort has been devoted to studying different aspects of the heavy-ion collisions using heavy flavor particles. In this work, we study the dynamics of heavy quark transport in the QGP medium using the rapidity dependence of heavy flavor observables. We calculate the nuclear modification of $\text{B}$ and $\text{D}$ meson spectra as well as spectra of leptons from heavy flavor decays in the rapidity range $[-4.0,4.0]$. We use an implementation of the improved Langevin equation with gluon radiation on top of a (3+1)-dimensional relativistic viscous hydrodynamical background for several collision setups. We find that the rapidity dependence of the heavy quark modification is determined by the interplay between the smaller size of the medium, which affects the path length of the heavy quarks, and the softer heavy quark initial production spectrum. We compare our results with available experimental data and present predictions for open heavy flavor meson $R_\text{AA}$ at finite rapidity.

Nuclear modification of jet shape for inclusive jets and $γ$-jets at the LHC energies

With our coupled jet-fluid model, we study the nuclear modifications of full jets and jet structures for single inclusive jets and $γ$-jets in Pb+Pb collisions at $5.02$~ATeV and $2.76$~ATeV. The in-medium evolution of full jet shower is described by a set of coupled transport equations including the effects of collisional energy loss, transverse momentum broadening and medium-induced splitting process. The dynamical evolution of bulk medium is simulated by solving relativistic hydrodynamic equation with source term which accounts for the energy and momentum deposited by hard jet shower to soft medium. Our study demonstrates that the hydrodynamic medium response to jet propagation significantly enhances the broadening of jet shape at large angles and is essential for the cone-size dependence of jet energy loss and nuclear modification factor of inclusive jet production. It is also found that the nuclear modification pattern of jet shape is sensitive to jet energy but has weak dependence on the flavor of the parton that initiates the jet. Our result can naturally explain the different nuclear modification patterns of jet shape functions for single inclusive jet and $γ$-jet events as observed by the CMS Collaboration, and can be tested in the future by measuring the jet shape function over a wider range of jet energies in heavy-ion collisions.

Drag induced radiative energy loss of semi-hard heavy quarks

We revisited gluon bremsstrahlung off a heavy quark in nuclear matter within higher twist formalism. In this work, we demonstrate that, in addition to transverse momentum diffusion parameter ($\hat q$), the gluon emission spectrum for a heavy quark is quite sensitive to $\hat e$, which quantify the amount of light-cone drag experienced by a parton. This effect leads to an additional energy loss term for heavy-quarks. From heavy flavor suppression data in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions one can now estimate the value of this sub-leading non-perturbative jet transport parameter ($\hat e$) from our results.

Full jet evolution in quark-gluon plasma and nuclear modification of jet production and jet shape in Pb+Pb collisions at 2.76 ATeV at the LHC

We study the evolution of full jet shower in quark-gluon plasma via solving a set of coupled differential transport equations for the three-dimensional momentum distributions of quarks and gluons contained in the full jets. In our jet evolution equations, we include all partonic splitting processes as well as the collisional energy loss and transverse momentum broadening for both the leading and radiated partons of the full jets. Combining with a realistic (2+1)-dimensional viscous hydrodynamic simulation for the space-time profiles of the hot and dense nuclear medium produced in heavy-ion collisions, we apply our formalism to calculate the nuclear modification of single inclusive full jet spectra, the momentum imbalance of photon-jet and dijet pairs, and jet shape function (at partonic level) in Pb+Pb collisions at 2.76 ATeV. The roles of various jet-medium interaction mechanisms on the full jet modification are studied. We find that the nuclear modification of jet shape is sensitive to the interplay of different interaction mechanisms as well as the energies of the full jets.

Gluon contribution to open heavy-meson production in heavy-ion collisions

A sizable contribution to heavy quark production in high-energy hadronic and nuclear collisions comes from heavy quark-antiquark pair production from gluon splitting during the parton shower evolution. We investigate the effect of gluon-medium interaction on open heavy flavor spectra in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions. The interaction of hard gluons and heavy quarks with the hot QCD medium is simulated by utilizing a Langevin transport model that simultaneously incorporates contributions from collisional and radiative processes. It is found that while the gluon splitting channel has quite an important contribution to the single $D$ meson production cross section, its influence on the final heavy meson nuclear modification turns out to be quite modest because the average lifetime of hard gluons is short before splitting into heavy quark-antiquark pairs during the evolution and propagation of the parton shower.

Linearized Boltzmann transport model for jet propagation in the quark-gluon plasma: Heavy quark evolution

A Linearized Boltzmann Transport (LBT) model coupled with hydrodynamical background is established to describe the evolution of jet shower partons and medium excitations in high energy heavy-ion collisions. We extend the LBT model to include both elastic and inelastic processes for light and heavy partons in the quark-gluon plasma. A hybrid model of fragmentation and coalescence is developed for the hadronization of heavy quarks. Within this framework, we investigate how heavy flavor observables depend on various ingredients, such as different energy loss and hadronization mechanisms, the momentum and temperature dependences of the transport coefficients, and the radial flow of the expanding fireball. Our model calculations show good descriptions of the $D$ meson suppression and elliptic flow observed at the LHC and RHIC. The prediction for the Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}$=5.02~TeV is provided.

Photon bremsstrahlung from quark jet via transverse and longitudinal scatterings: single versus multiple scatterings

We study the production of jet-bremsstrahlung photons through the scattering with the constituents of a dense nuclear matter within the framework of deep-inelastic scattering off a large nucleus. Applying a gradient expansion up to the second order for the exchanged three-dimensional momentum between jet and medium, we derive the single photon bremsstrahlung spectrum with the inclusion of the contributions from the transverse broadening as well as the longitudinal drag and diffusion of the hard parton's momentum. We also compare the medium-induced photon radiation spectra for single scattering and from the resummation of multiple scatterings. It is found that the coupling between different scatterings can give additional contribution to medium-induced photon radiation, while for small momentum exchange, the leading contribution from the drag and diffusions to the photon emission spectra remain the same for single and multiple scatterings.

Anisotropic Flow and Jet Quenching in Relativistic Nuclear Collisions

The exploration of the strong-interaction matter under extreme conditions is one of the main goals of relativistic heavy-ion collisions. We provide some of the main results on the novel properties of quark-gluon plasma, with particular focus given to the strong collectivity and the color opaqueness exhibited by such hot and dense matter produced in high-energy nuclear collisions at RHIC and the LHC.

Decorrelation of anisotropic flows along the longitudinal direction

The initial energy density distribution and fluctuation in the transverse direction lead to anisotropic flows of final hadrons through collective expansion in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. Fluctuations along the longitudinal direction, on the other hand, can result in decorrelation of anisotropic flows in different regions of pseudo rapidity ($η$). Decorrelation of the $2$nd and $3$rd order anisotropic flows with different $η$ gaps for final charged hadrons in high-energy heavy-ion collisions is studied in an event-by-event (3+1)D ideal hydrodynamic model with fully fluctuating initial conditions from A Multi-Phase Transport (AMPT) model. The decorrelation of anisotropic flows of final hadrons with large $η$ gaps are found to originate from the spatial decorrelation along the longitudinal direction in the AMPT initial conditions through hydrodynamic evolution. The decorrelation is found to consist of both a linear twist and random fluctuation of the event-plane angles. The agreement between our results and recent CMS data in most centralities suggests that the string-like mechanism of initial parton production in AMPT model captures the initial longitudinal fluctuation that is responsible for the measured decorrelation of anisotropic flows in Pb+Pb collisions at LHC. Our predictions for Au+Au collisions at the highest RHIC energy show stronger longitudinal decorrelation, indicating larger longitudinal fluctuations at lower beam energies. Our study also calls into question some of the current experimental methods for measuring anisotropic flows and extraction of transport coefficients through comparisons to hydrodynamic simulations that do not include longitudinal fluctuations.

Energy loss, hadronization and hadronic interactions of heavy flavors in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

We construct a theoretical framework to describe the evolution of heavy flavors produced in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. The in-medium energy loss of heavy quarks is described using our modified Langevin equation that incorporates both quasi-elastic scatterings and the medium-induced gluon radiation. The space-time profiles of the fireball is described by a (2+1)-dimensional hydrodynamics simulation. A hybrid model of fragmentation and coalescence is utilized for heavy quark hadronization, after which the produced heavy mesons together with the soft hadrons produced from the bulk QGP are fed into the hadron cascade UrQMD model to simulate the subsequent hadronic interactions. We find that the medium-induced gluon radiation contributes significantly to heavy quark energy loss at high $p_\mathrm{T}$; heavy-light quark coalescence enhances heavy meson production at intermediate $p_\mathrm{T}$; and scatterings inside the hadron gas further suppress the $D$ meson $R_\mathrm{AA}$ at large $p_\mathrm{T}$ and enhance its $v_2$. Our calculations provide good descriptions of heavy meson suppression and elliptic flow observed at both the LHC and RHIC.

Heavy-flavor dynamics in relativistic p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{S_{NN}}=5.02$ TeV

We investigate the heavy flavor dynamics in the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) medium created in p-Pb collisions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). In the (3+1)-dimensional viscous hydrodynamics model describing QGP medium, the dynamics of heavy quarks are studied in an improved Langevin framework incorporating both collisional and radiative energy loss. The hadronization of the heavy quarks is given by a hybrid model of fragmentation and recombination. We find that the in-medium evolution of charm quarks raises the D-meson $R_{pPb}$ at low transverse momenta while it suppresses the D-meson $R_{pPb}$ at intermediate momenta. In addition, the elliptic flow of D-meson is calculated. For a diffusion coefficient which reproduces central $R_{AA}$ data at the LHC, we find a much smaller D-meson $v_2$ compared to the light hadrons. This observation indicates an incomplete coupling between heavy quarks with the medium, due to the reduced medium size compared to AA collisions.

Jet transport and photon bremsstrahlung via longitudinal and transverse scattering

We study the effect of multiple scatterings on the propagation of hard partons and the production of jet-bremsstrahlung photons inside a dense medium in the framework of deep-inelastic scattering off a large nucleus. We include the momentum exchanges in both longitudinal and transverse directions between the hard partons and the constituents of the medium. Keeping up to the second order in a momentum gradient expansion, we derive the spectrum for the photon emission from a hard quark jet when traversing dense nuclear matter. Our calculation demonstrates that the photon bremsstrahlung process is influenced not only by the transverse momentum diffusion of the propagating hard parton, but also by the longitudinal drag and diffusion of the parton momentum. A notable outcome is that the longitudinal drag tends to reduce the amount of stimulated emission from the hard parton.

Longitudinal Decorrelation of Anisotropic Flows in Heavy-ion Collisions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider

Fluctuations in the initial transverse energy-density distribution lead to anisotropic flows as observed in central high-energy heavy-ion collisions. Studies of longitudinal fluctuations of the anisotropic flows can shed further light on the initial conditions and dynamical evolution of the hot quark-gluon matter in these collisions. Correlations between anisotropic flows with varying pseudorapidity gaps in Pb+Pb collisions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider are investigated using both an event-by-event (3+1)-D ideal hydrodynamical model with fluctuating initial conditions and the a multiphase transport (AMPT) Monte Carlo model for high-energy heavy-ion collisions. Anisotropic flows at different pseudorapidities are found to become significantly decorrelated with increasing pseudo-rapidity gaps due to longitudinal fluctuations in the initial states of heavy-ion collisions. The longitudinal correlation of the elliptic flow shows a strong centrality dependence while the correlation of the triangular flow is independent of the centrality. Longitudinal fluctuations as a source of the decorrelation are further shown to consist of a twist or gradual rotation in flow angles between the forward and backward direction and additional fluctuations on top of the twist. Within the AMPT model, longitudinal correlations of anisotropic flows are also found to depend on the value of partonic cross sections. The implicatiosn of constraining the initial conditions and shear viscosity to entropy density ratio of the partonic matter in high-energy heavy-ion collisions are also discussed.

Modeling of heavy-flavor pair correlations in Au-Au collisions at 200 A GeV at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider

We study the nuclear modification of angular and momentum correlations between heavy quark pairs in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions. The evolution of heavy quarks inside the thermalized medium is described via a modified Langevin approach that incorporates both elastic and inelastic interactions with the medium constituents. The spacetime evolution of the fireball is obtained from a (2+1)-dimensional viscous hydrodynamics simulation. The hadronization of heavy quarks is performed utilizing a hybrid model of fragmentation and coalescence. Our results show that the nuclear modification of the transverse momentum imbalance of D\bar{D} pairs reflects the total energy loss experienced by the heavy quarks and may help us probe specific regions of the medium. The angular correlation of heavy flavor pairs, especially in the low to intermediate transverse momentum regime, is sensitive to the detailed energy loss mechanism of heavy quarks inside the QGP.

Physics perspectives of heavy-ion collisions at very high energy

Heavy-ion collisions at very high colliding energies are expected to produce a quark-gluon plasma (QGP) at the highest temperature obtainable in a laboratory setting. Experimental studies of these reactions can provide an unprecedented range of information on properties of the QGP at high temperatures. We report theoretical investigations of the physics perspectives of heavy-ion collisions at a future high-energy collider. These include initial parton production, collective expansion of the dense medium, jet quenching, heavy-quark transport, dissociation and regeneration of quarkonia, photon and dilepton production. The Influence of Initial State Fluctuations on Heavy Quark Energy Loss in Relativistic Heavy-ion Collisions

We study the effects of initial state fluctuations on the dynamical evolution of heavy quarks inside a quark-gluon plasma created in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. The evolution of heavy quarks in QGP matter is described utilizing a modified Langevin equation that incorporates the contributions from both collisional and radiative energy loss. The spacetime evolution of the fireball medium is simulated with a (2+1)-dimensional viscous hydrodynamic model. We find that when the medium traversed by the heavy quark contains a fixed amount of energy, heavy quarks tend to lose more energy for greater fluctuations of the medium density. This may result in a larger suppression of heavy flavor observables in a fluctuating QGP matter than in a smooth one. The possibility of using hard probes to infer the information of initial states of heavy-ion collisions is discussed.

Dynamical Evolution, Hadronization and Angular De-correlation of Heavy Flavor in a Hot and Dense QCD Medium

We study heavy flavor evolution and hadronization in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. The in-medium evolution of heavy quarks is described using our modified Langevin framework that incorporates both collisional and radiative energy loss mechanisms. The subsequent hadronization process for heavy quarks is calculated with a fragmentation plus recombination model. We find significant contribution from gluon radiation to heavy quark energy loss at high $p_T$; the recombination mechanism can greatly enhance D meson production at medium $p_T$. Our calculation provides a good description of D meson nuclear modification at the LHC. In addition, we explore the angular correlation functions of heavy flavor pairs which may provide us a potential candidate for distinguishing different energy loss mechanisms of heavy quarks inside QGP.

Elliptic and triangular flow anisotropy in deuteron-gold collisions at RHIC and proton-lead collisions at the LHC

We study elliptic and triangular flow in the collisions of deuteron-gold nuclei at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 200$ GeV at RHIC and of proton-lead nuclei at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 5.02$ TeV at the LHC, utilizing (3+1)-dimensional ideal hydrodynamics for the dynamic evolution of the fireball and a Glauber-based Monte-Carlo energy deposition model for simulating the fluctuating initial conditions. Sizable values of elliptic and triangular flow are obtained for both colliding systems, and the results are consistent with PHENIX, ALICE, ATLAS and CMS measurements. For these studied centralities, we find that the elliptic flow in proton-lead collisions is smaller than deuteron-gold collisions, while the triangular flows are comparable in both colliding systems. Our results indicate that the observed collective anisotropic flow in deuteron-gold and proton-lead collisions may be obtained from relativistic hydrodynamic evolution of the fireball with initial state fluctuations.

We study the medium modification of jets correlated with large transverse momentum photons at the LHC via a transport and perturbative QCD hybrid model which incorporates the contributions from both elastic collisions and radiative energy loss experienced by the parton showers. Calculations are performed for the modification of the photon-tagged jet yield, the photon-jet energy imbalance, and the azimuthal distribution of away-side jets. The modifications of photon-tagged jets with different $x_T = p_{T, J}/p_{T, γ}$ values are studied and they exhibit different centrality and jet cone size dependence due to traversing different medium lengths and density profiles. We further investigate the influence of transverse and longitudinal jet transport coefficients on the nuclear modification of photon-tagged jet production and jet shape observables.

Theory of Jet Quenching in Ultra-Relativistic Nuclear Collisions

We present a short overview of recent progress in the theory of jet quenching in ultra-relativistic nuclear collisions, including phenomenological studies of jet quenching at RHIC and the LHC, development in NLO perburbative QCD calculation of jet broadening and energy loss, full jet evolution and modification, medium response to jet transport, and lattice QCD and AdS/CFT studies of jet quenching.

Extracting jet transport coefficient from jet quenching at RHIC and LHC

Within five different approaches to parton propagation and energy loss in dense matter, a phenomenological study of experimental data on suppression of large $p_T$ single inclusive hadrons in heavy-ion collisions at both RHIC and LHC was carried out. The evolution of bulk medium used in the study for parton propagation was given by 2+1D or 3+1D hydrodynamic models which are also constrained by experimental data on bulk hadron spectra. Values for the jet transport parameter $\hat q$ at the center of the most central heavy-ion collisions are extracted or calculated within each model, with parameters for the medium properties that are constrained by experimental data on the hadron suppression factor $R_{AA}$. For a quark with initial energy of 10 GeV we find that $\hat q\approx 1.2 \pm 0.3$ GeV$^2$/fm at an initial time $τ_0=0.6$ fm/$c$ in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV/n and $\hat q\approx 1.9 \pm 0.7 $ GeV$^2$/fm in Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s}=2.76 $ TeV/n. Compared to earlier studies, these represent significant convergence on values of the extracted jet transport parameter, reflecting recent advances in theory and the availability of new experiment data from the LHC.

Heavy quark dynamics and hadronization in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions: collisional versus radiative energy loss

We study the dynamics of energy loss and flow of heavy quarks produced in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions within the framework of a Langevin equation coupled to a (2+1)-dimensional viscous hydrodynamic model that simulates the space-time evolution of the produced hot and dense QCD matter. The classical Langevin approach is improved such that, apart from quasi-elastic scatterings, radiative energy loss is incorporated by treating gluon radiation as an additional force term. The hadronization of emitted heavy quarks is simulated via a hybrid fragmentation plus recombination model. Our calculation shows significant contribution from gluon radiation to heavy quark energy loss at high energies, and we find the recombination mechanism is important for heavy flavor meson production at intermediate energies. We present numerical results for the nuclear modification and elliptic flow of D mesons, which are consistent with measurements at both LHC and RHIC; predictions for B mesons are also provided.

Model and parameter dependence of heavy quark energy loss in a hot and dense medium

Within the framework of the Langevin equation, we study the energy loss of heavy quark due to quasi-elastic multiple scatterings in a quark-gluon plasma created by relativistic heavy-ion collisions. We investigate how the initial configuration of the quark-gluon plasma as well as its properties affect the final state spectra and elliptic flow of D meson and non-photonic electron. We find that both the geometric anisotropy of the initial quark-gluon plasma and the flow profiles of the hydrodynamic medium play important roles in the heavy quark energy loss process and the development of elliptic flow. The relative contribution from charm and bottom quarks is found to affect the transverse momentum dependence of the quenching and flow patterns of heavy flavor decay electron; such influence depends on the interaction strength between heavy quark and the medium.

Parton Transport via Transverse and Longitudinal Scattering in Dense Media

The effect of multiple scatterings on the propagation of hard partonic jets in a dense nuclear medium is studied in the framework of deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) off a large nucleus. Power counting arguments based on the Glauber improved Soft-Collinear-Effective-Theory are used to identify the class of leading power corrections to the process of a single parton traversing the extended medium without emission. It turns out that the effect of longitudinal drag and diffusion (often referred to as straggling) is as important as transverse scattering, when relying solely on power counting arguments. With the inclusion of momentum exchanges in both transverse and longitudinal directions between the traversing hard parton and the constituents of the medium, we derive a differential equation for the time (or distance) evolution of the hard parton momentum distribution. Keeping up to the second order in a momentum gradient expansion, this equation describes in-medium evolution of hard jets which experience longitudinal drag and diffusion plus the transverse broadening caused by multiple scatterings from the medium.

Collisional vs. Radiative Energy Loss of Heavy Quark in a Hot and Dense Nuclear Matter

We study the heavy quark evolution in a quark-gluon plasma medium within the framework of Langevin equation coupled to a (2+1)-dimensional viscous hydrodynamic model. We modify the current Langevin algorithm such that apart from quasi-elastic scattering, medium-induced radiative energy loss is incorporated as well by treating gluon radiation as an extra force term. We find a significant effect of gluon radiation on heavy quark energy loss at LHC energies. Our calculation provides a good description of the D meson suppression measured by ALICE experiment, and makes a prediction for B meson suppression and flow.

Comparison of Jet Quenching Formalisms for a Quark-Gluon Plasma "Brick"

We review the currently available formalisms for radiative energy loss of a high-momentum parton in a dense strongly interacting medium. The underlying theoretical framework of the four commonly used formalisms is discussed and the differences and commonalities between the formalisms are highlighted. A quantitative comparison of the single gluon emission spectra as well as the energy loss distributions is given for a model system consisting of a uniform medium with a fixed length of L=2 fm and L=5 fm (the `Brick'). Sizable quantitative differences are found. The largest differences can be attributed to specific approximations that are made in the calculation of the radiation spectrum.

Counting hot/cold spots in quark-gluon plasma

We study how local fluctuations in the initial states of relativistic heavy-ion collisions manifest themselves in the correlations between different orders of harmonic moments of the density profiles, particularly those involving only odd harmonics which purely arise from initial state fluctuations. We find the strengths of those correlations are sensitive to the number of hot and cold spots in the initial states. Hydrodynamic evolution of the fireball translates initial state geometric anisotropies as well as their correlations into final state momentum anisotropies and correlations. We conclude that the measurement of the correlations between different harmonic moments of final state azimuthal distribution can be employed to quantify the inhomogeneity of the initial density profiles such as the population of hot and cold spots that are produced in high energy nuclear collisions.

Explanation of Di-jet asymmetry in Pb+Pb collisions at the Large Hadron Collider

We investigate the medium modification of a partonic jet shower traversing in a hot quark-gluon plasma. We derive and solve a differential equation that governs the evolution of the radiated gluon spectrum as the jet propagates through the medium. Energy contained inside the jet cone is lost by dissipation through elastic collisions with the medium and by scattering of shower partons to larger angles. We find that the jet energy loss at early times is dominated by medium effects on the vacuum radiation, and by medium-induced radiation effects at late times. We compare our numerical results for the nuclear modification of the di-jet asymmetry with that recently reported by the ATLAS collaboration.

Heavy quark energy loss and thermalization in hot and dense nuclear matter

We study heavy quark energy loss and thermalization in hot and dense nuclear medium. The diffusion of heavy quarks is calculated via a Langevin equation, both for a static medium as well as for a quark-gluon plasma (QGP) medium generated by a (3+1)-dimensional hydrodynamic model. We investigate how the initial configuration of the QGP and its properties affect the final state spectra and elliptic flow of heavy flavor mesons and non-photonic electrons. It is observed that both the geometric anisotropy of the initial profile and the flow profile of the hydrodynamic medium play important roles in the heavy quark energy loss process and the development of elliptic flow. Within our definition of the thermalization criterion and for reasonable values of the diffusion constant, we observe thermalization times that are longer than the lifetime of the QGP phase.

Jet modification in hot and dense QCD matter

High energy quarks and gluons play essential roles in the tomographic study of relativistic heavy-ion collisions and of the quark-gluon plasma. They interact with the traversed dense matter through elastic and inelastic collisions, and lose some of their initial energy in the process. Experimental observables for jet modification include single inclusive hadron production, hadron emission opposite to a triggered hadron or photon, and full jet observables. Here a brief review of parton energy loss and jet quenching in high energy nucleus-nucleus collisions is presented.

Jet shower evolution in medium and dijet asymmetry in Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC

We study the evolution of a partonic jet shower propagating through a quark-gluon plasma. Combining the in-medium evolutions of the leading parton and shower gluons, we compute the depletion of the energy from the jet cone by dissipation through elastic collisions with medium constituents, by scattering of shower partons to larger angles, and by radiation outside the jet cone. Numerical results are presented for the nuclear modification of dijet asymmetry in Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC.

A pQCD-based description of heavy and light flavor jet quenching

We present a successful description of the medium modification of light and heavy flavor jets within a perturbative QCD (pQCD) based approach. Only the couplings involving hard partons are assumed to be weak. The effect of the medium on a hard parton, per unit time, is encoded in terms of three non-perturbative, related transport coefficients which describe the transverse momentum squared gained, the elastic energy loss and diffusion in elastic energy transfer. A fit of the centrality dependence of the suppression and the azimuthal anisotropy of leading hadrons tends to favor somewhat larger transport coefficients for heavy quarks. Imposing additional constraints based on leading order (LO) Hard Thermal Loop (HTL) effective theory, leads to a worsening of the fit.

Translation of collision geometry fluctuations into momentum anisotropies in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

We develop a systematic framework for the study of the initial collision geometry fluctuations in relativistic heavy-ion collisions and investigate how they evolve through different stages of the fireball history and translate into final particle momentum anisotropies. We find in our event-by-event analysis that only the few lowest momentum anisotropy parameters survive after the hydrodynamical evolution of the system. The geometry of the produced medium is found to be affected by the pre-equilibrium evolution of the medium and the thermal smearing of the discretized event-by-event initial conditions, both of which tend to smear out the spatial anisotropies. We find such effects to be more prominent for higher moments than for lower moments. The correlations between odd and even spatial anisotropy parameters during the pre-equilibrium expansion are quantitatively studied and found to be small. Our study provides a theoretical foundation for the understanding of initial state fluctuations and the collective expansion dynamics in relativistic heavy-ion collisions.

Triangular flow in event-by-event ideal hydrodynamics in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=200A$ GeV

The first calculation of triangular flow $v_3$ in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=200A$ GeV from an event-by-event (3+1)-d transport+hydrodynamics hybrid approach is presented. As a response to the initial triangularity $ε_3$ of the collision zone, $v_3$ is computed in a similar way to the standard event-plane analysis for elliptic flow $v_2$. It is found that the triangular flow exhibits weak centrality dependence and is roughly equal to elliptic flow in most central collisions. We also explore the transverse momentum and rapidity dependence of $v_2$ and $v_3$ for charged particles as well as identified particles. We conclude that an event-by-event treatment of the ideal hydrodynamic evolution starting with realistic initial conditions generates the main features expected for triangular flow.

Jet energy loss, photon production, and photon-hadron correlations at RHIC

Jet energy loss, photon production and photon-hadron correlations are studied together at high transverse momentum in relativistic heavy-ion collisions at RHIC energies. The modification of hard jets traversing a hot and dense nuclear medium is evaluated by consistently taking into account induced gluon radiation and elastic collisions. The production of high transverse momentum photons in Au+Au collisions at RHIC is calculated by incorporating a complete set of photon-production channels. Comparison with experimental photon production and photon-hadron correlation data is performed, using a (3+1)-dimensional relativistic hydrodynamic description of the thermalized medium created in these collisions. Our results demonstrate that the interaction between the hard jets and the soft medium is important for the study of photon production and of photon-hadron correlation at RHIC.

Electromagnetic Radiation from Broken Symmetries in Relativistic Nuclear Collisions

A new channel of direct photon production from a quark gluon plasma (QGP) is explored in the framework of high-temperature QCD. This process appears at next-to-leading order, in the presence of a charge asymmetry in the excited matter. The photon production rate from this new mechanism is suppressed compared to the QCD annihilation and Compton scattering at low baryon density but assumes importance in baryon-rich matter.
