Finite quotients of singular Artin monoids and categorification of the desingularization map

We study various aspects of the structure and representation theory of singular Artin monoids. This includes a number of generalizations of the desingularization map and explicit presentations for certain finite quotient monoids of diagrammatic nature. The main result is a categorification of the classical desingularization map for singular Artin monoids associated to finite Weyl groups using BGG category $\mathcal{O}$.

Simple non-weight modules over Lie superalgebras of Block type

In this paper, a family of non-weight modules over Lie superalgebras $S(q)$ of Block type are studied. Free $U(η)$-modules of rank $1$ over Ramond-Block algebras and free $U(\mathfrak{h})$-modules of rank $2$ over Neveu-Schwarz-Block algebras are constructed and classified. Moreover, the sufficient and necessary conditions for such modules to be simple are presented, and their isomorphism classes are also determined. The results cover some existing results.

MSNet: A Multilevel Instance Segmentation Network for Natural Disaster Damage Assessment in Aerial Videos

In this paper, we study the problem of efficiently assessing building damage after natural disasters like hurricanes, floods or fires, through aerial video analysis. We make two main contributions. The first contribution is a new dataset, consisting of user-generated aerial videos from social media with annotations of instance-level building damage masks. This provides the first benchmark for quantitative evaluation of models to assess building damage using aerial videos. The second contribution is a new model, namely MSNet, which contains novel region proposal network designs and an unsupervised score refinement network for confidence score calibration in both bounding box and mask branches. We show that our model achieves state-of-the-art results compared to previous methods in our dataset. We will release our data, models and code.

Distance proper connection of graphs

Let $G$ be an edge-colored connected graph. A path $P$ in $G$ is called a distance $\ell$-proper path if no two edges of the same color appear with fewer than $\ell$ edges in between on $P$. The graph $G$ is called $(k,\ell)$-proper connected if every pair of distinct vertices of $G$ are connected by $k$ pairwise internally vertex-disjoint distance $\ell$-proper paths in $G$. For a $k$-connected graph $G$, the minimum number of colors needed to make $G$ $(k,\ell)$-proper connected is called the $(k,\ell)$-proper connection number of $G$ and denoted by $pc_{k,\ell}(G)$. In this paper, we prove that $pc_{1,2}(G)\leq 5$ for any $2$-connected graph $G$. Considering graph operations, we find that $3$ is a sharp upper bound for the $(1,2)$-proper connection number of the join and the Cartesian product of almost all graphs. In addition, we find some basic properties of the $(k,\ell)$-proper connection number and determine the values of $pc_{1,\ell}(G)$ where $G$ is a traceable graph, a tree, a complete bipartite graph, a complete multipartite graph, a wheel, a cube or a permutation graph of a nontrivial traceable graph.

Distance proper connection of graphs and their complements

Let $G$ be an edge-colored connected graph. A path $P$ in $G$ is called a distance $\ell$-proper path if no two edges of the same color can appear with less than $\ell$ edges in between on $P$. The graph $G$ is called $(k,\ell)$-proper connected if there is an edge-coloring such that every pair of distinct vertices of $G$ are connected by $k$ pairwise internally vertex-disjoint distance $\ell$-proper paths in $G$. The minimum number of colors needed to make $G$ $(k,\ell)$-proper connected is called the $(k,\ell)$-proper connection number of $G$ and denoted by $pc_{k,\ell}(G)$. In this paper we first focus on the $(1,2)$-proper connection number of $G$ depending on some constraints of $\overline G$. Then, we characterize the graphs of order $n$ with $(1,2)$-proper connection number $n-1$ or $n-2$. Using this result, we investigate the Nordhaus-Gaddum-Type problem of $(1,2)$-proper connection number and prove that $pc_{1,2}(G)+pc_{1,2}(\overline{G})\leq n+2$ for connected graphs $G$ and $\overline{G}$. The equality holds if and only if $G$ or $\overline{G}$ is isomorphic to a double star.

Solutions for two conjectures on kaleidoscopic edge-colorings

For an $r$-regular graph $G$, we define an edge-coloring $c$ with colors from $\{1,2,\cdots,$ $k\}$, in such a way that any vertex of $G$ is incident to at least one edge of each color. The multiset-color $c_m(v)$ of a vertex $v$ is defined as the ordered tuple $(a_1,a_2,\cdots ,a_k)$, where $a_i \ (1\leq i\leq k)$ denotes the number of edges with color $i$ which are incident with $v$ in $G$. Then this edge-coloring $c$ is called a {\it $k$-kaleidoscopic coloring} of $G$ if every two distinct vertices in $G$ have different multiset-colors and in this way the graph $G$ is defined as a {\it $k$-kaleidoscope}. In this paper, we determine the integer $k$ for a complete graph $K_n$ to be a $k$-kaleidoscope, and hence solve a conjecture in [P. Zhang, A Kaleidoscopic View of Graph Colorings, Springer, New York, 2016] that for any integers $n$ and $k$ with $n\geq k+3 \geq 6$, the complete graph $K_n$ is a $k$-kaleidoscope. Then, we construct an $r$-regular $3$-kaleidoscope of order $\binom{r-1}{2}-1$ for each integer $r\geq 7$, where $r\equiv 3\ (\text{mod}\ 4)$, which solves another conjecture in the same book on the maximum order for $r$-regular $3$-kaleidoscopes.

Tricritical Ising phase transition in two-ladder Majorana fermion lattice

We introduce a two-ladder lattice model with interacting Majorana fermions that could be realized on the surfaces of a topological insulator film. We study this model by a combination of analytical and numerical techniques and find a phase diagram that features both gapless and gapped phases as well as interesting phase transitions including a quantum critical point in the tricritical Ising (TCI) universality class. The latter occurs at an intermediate coupling strength at a meeting point of a first-order transition line and an Ising critical line and is known to be described by a superconformal field theory with central charge $c =\frac{7}{10}$. We discuss the experimental feasibility of constructing the model and tuning parameters to the vicinity of the TCI point where signatures of the elusive supersymmetry can be observed.

Emergent Supersymmetry from Strongly Interacting Majorana Zero Modes

We show that a strongly interacting chain of Majorana zero modes exhibits a supersymmetric quantum critical point corresponding to the $c={7\over 10}$ tricritical Ising model, which separates a critical phase in the Ising universality class from a supersymmetric massive phase. We verify our predictions with numerical density-matrix-renormalization-group computations and determine the consequences for tunnelling experiments.

Interaction-enabled topological phases in topological insulator-superconductor heterostructures

Topological phases of matter that depend for their existence on interactions are fundamentally interesting and potentially useful as platforms for future quantum computers. Despite the multitude of theoretical proposals the only interaction-enabled topological phase experimentally observed is the fractional quantum Hall liquid. To help identify other systems that can give rise to such phases we present in this work a detailed study of the effect of interactions on Majorana zero modes bound to vortices in a superconducting surface of a 3D topological insulator. This system is of interest because, as was recently pointed out, it can be tuned into the regime of strong interactions. We start with a 0D system suggesting an experimental realization of the interaction-induced $\mathbb{Z}_8$ ground state periodicity previously discussed by Fidkowski and Kitaev. We argue that the periodicity is experimentally observable using a tunnel probe. We then focus on interaction-enabled crystalline topological phases that can be built with the Majoranas in a vortex lattice in higher dimensions. In 1D we identify an interesting exactly solvable model which is related to a previously discussed one that exhibits an interaction-enabled topological phase. We study these models using analytical techniques, exact numerical diagonalization (ED) and density matrix renormalization group (DMRG). Our results confirm the existence of the interaction-enabled topological phase and clarify the nature of the quantum phase transition that leads to it. We finish with a discussion of models in dimensions 2 and 3 that produce similar interaction-enabled topological phases.

Phase Diagram of the Interacting Majorana Chain Model

The Hubbard chain and spinless fermion chain are paradigms of strongly correlated systems, very well understood using Bethe ansatz, Density Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG) and field theory/renormalization group (RG) methods. They have been applied to one-dimensional materials and have provided important insights for understanding higher dimensional cases. Recently, a new interacting fermion model has been introduced, with possible applications to topological materials. It has a single Majorana fermion operator on each lattice site and interactions with the shortest possible range that involve 4 sites. We present a thorough analysis of the phase diagram of this model in one dimension using field theory/RG and DMRG methods. It includes a gapped supersymmetric region and a novel gapless phase with coexisting Luttinger liquid and Ising degrees of freedom. In addition to a first order transition, three critical points occur: tricritical Ising, Lifshitz and a novel generalization of the commensurate-incommensurate transition. We also survey various gapped phases of the system that arise when the translation symmetry is broken by dimerization and find both trivial and topological phases with 0, 1 and 2 Majorana zero modes bound to the edges of the chain with open boundary conditions.

Majorana and fractionally charged bound states in 1-D Rashba nanowire under spatially varying Zeeman fields

We study topological phase transitions in one dimensional (1-D) Rashba nanowire under a spatially varying Zeeman field when coupled to an $s$-wave superconductor substrate. We show that this system supports both Majorana bound states (MBS) and fractionally charged bound states (FBS) of Jackiw-Rebbi type. By disassembling Zeeman Hamiltonian into multiple helical components, we find that each helical component is relating to a corresponding topological region, characterized by the emergence of MBS. FBS arises in the overlapping gapped area created by any two helical components with topologically differing configuration, analogous to those formed at the knot in SSH model. We then develop a general criteria for the occurrence conditions of MBS and FBS. Our results suggest that systems with large Rashba spin orbit couple amplitude or in presence of weak Zeeman fields favor MBS, and otherwise FBS are more favorable. In the end, we demonstrate that spin components of zero energy bound states in topological phases are polarized in the plane perpendicular to Rashba vector, and the polarization oscillates with the variance of phases of the Zeeman field.
