In-plane Zeeman field induced Majorana corner and hinge modes in an $s$-wave superconductor heterostructure

Second-order topological superconductors host Majorana corner and hingemodes in contrast to conventional edge and surface modes in two and three dimensions. However, the realization of such second-order corner modes usually demands unconventional superconducting pairing or complicated junctions or layered structures. Here we show that Majorana corner modes could be realized using a 2D quantum spin Hall insulator in proximity contact with an $s$-wave superconductor and subject to an in-plane Zeeman field. Beyond a critical value, the in-plane Zeeman field induces opposite effective Dirac masses between adjacent boundaries, leading to one Majorana mode at each corner. A similar paradigm also applies to 3D topological insulators with the emergence of Majorana hinge states. Avoiding complex superconductor pairing and material structure, our scheme provides an experimentally realistic platform for implementing Majorana corner and hinge states.

Effective 2D thickness for the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless-like transition in a highly underdoped La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$

The nature of the superconducting transition in highly underdoped thick films of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ ($x=0.07$ and 0.08) has been investigated using the in-plane transport measurements. The contribution of superconducting fluctuations to the conductivity in zero magnetic field, or paraconductivity, was determined from the magnetoresistance measured in fields applied perpendicular to the CuO$_2$ planes. Both the temperature dependence of the paraconductivity above the transition and the nonlinear current-voltage ($I-V$) characteristics measured across it, exhibit the main signatures of the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition. The quantitative comparison of the superfluid stiffness, extracted from the $I-V$ data, with the renormalization-group results for the BKT theory, reveals a large value of the vortex-core energy. This finding is confirmed by the analysis of the paraconductivity obtained using different methods. The results strongly suggest that the characteristic energy scale controlling the BKT behavior in this layered system corresponds to the superfluid stiffness of a few layers.

Evidence for Correlated Dynamics near the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless-like Transition in Highly Underdoped La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$

A low-frequency resistance noise study in highly underdoped thick films of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ ($x=0.07$ and 0.08) reveals slow, correlated dynamics and breaking of ergodicity near the superconducting transition of the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless type. The observed correlated behavior is strongly suppressed by disorder.

Giant supercurrent states in a superconductor-InAs/GaSb-superconductor junction

Superconductivity in topological materials has attracted a great deal of interest in both electron physics and material sciences since the theoretical predictions that Majorana fermions can be realized in topological superconductors [1-4]. Topological superconductivity could be realized in a type II, band-inverted, InAs/GaSb quantum well if it is in proximity to a conventional superconductor. Here we report observations of the proximity effect induced giant supercurrent states in an InAs/GaSb bilayer system that is sandwiched between two superconducting tantalum electrodes to form a superconductor-InAs/GaSb-superconductor junction. Electron transport results show that the supercurrent states can be preserved in a surprisingly large temperature-magnetic field (T-H) parameter space. In addition, the evolution of differential resistance in T and H reveals an interesting superconducting gap structure.

Two-stage magnetic-field-tuned superconductor-insulator transition in underdoped La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$

In the underdoped pseudogap regime of cuprate superconductors, the normal state is commonly probed by applying a magnetic field ($H$). However, the nature of the $H$-induced resistive state has been the subject of a long-term debate, and clear evidence for a zero-temperature ($T=0$) $H$-tuned superconductor-insulator transition (SIT) has proved elusive. Here we report magnetoresistance measurements in underdoped La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$, providing striking evidence for quantum critical behavior of the resistivity -- the signature of a $H$-driven SIT. The transition is not direct: it is accompanied by the emergence of an intermediate state, which is a superconductor only at $T=0$. Our finding of a two-stage $H$-driven SIT goes beyond the conventional scenario in which a single quantum critical point separates the superconductor and the insulator in the presence of a perpendicular $H$. Similar two-stage $H$-driven SIT, in which both disorder and quantum phase fluctuations play an important role, may also be expected in other copper-oxide high-temperature superconductors.

Conductance noise in an out-of-equilibrium two-dimensional electron system

A study of the conductance noise in a two-dimensional electron system (2DES) in Si at low temperatures (T) reveals the onset of large, non-Gaussian noise after cooling from an equilibrium state at a high T with a fixed carrier density n_s. This behavior, which signifies the falling out of equilibrium of the 2DES as T->0, is observed for n_s<n_g (n_g - glass transition density). A protocol where density is changed by a small value Δn_s at low T produces the same results for the noise power spectra. However, a detailed analysis of the non-Gaussian probability density functions (PDFs) of the fluctuations reveals that Δn_s has a qualitatively different and more dramatic effect than ΔT, suggesting that Δn_s induces strong changes in the free energy landscape of the system as a result of Coulomb interactions. The results from a third, waiting-time (t_w) protocol, where n_s is changed temporarily during t_w by a large amount, demonstrate that non-Gaussian PDFs exhibit history dependence and an evolution towards a Gaussian distribution as the system ages and slowly approaches equilibrium. By calculating the power spectra and higher-order statistics for the noise measured over a wide range of the applied voltage bias, it is established that the non-Gaussian noise is observed in the regime of Ohmic or linear response, i.e. that it is not caused by the applied bias.

Emergence of superconductivity from the dynamically heterogeneous insulating state in La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4}

A central issue for copper oxides is the nature of the insulating ground state at low carrier densities and the emergence of high-temperature superconductivity from that state with doping. Even though this superconductor-insulator transition (SIT) is a zero-temperature transition, measurements are not usually carried out at low temperatures. Here we use magnetoresistance to probe both the insulating state at very low temperatures and the presence of superconducting fluctuations in La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4}(LSCO) films, for doping levels that range from the insulator to the superconductor (x=0.03-0.08). We observe that the charge glass behavior, characteristic of the insulating state, is suppressed with doping, but it coexists with superconducting fluctuations that emerge already on the insulating side of the SIT. The unexpected quenching of the superconducting fluctuations by the competing charge order at low temperatures provides a new perspective on the mechanism for the SIT.

History dependent magnetoresistance in lightly doped La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} thin films

The in-plane magnetoresistance (MR) in atomically smooth La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} thin films grown by molecular-beam-epitaxy was measured in magnetic fields B up to 9 T over a wide range of temperatures T. The films, with x=0.03 and x=0.05, are insulating, and the positive MR emerges at T<4 K. The positive MR exhibits glassy features, including history dependence and memory, for all orientations of B. The results show that this behavior, which reflects the onset of glassiness in the dynamics of doped holes, is a robust feature of the insulating state.

Two-stage empirical likelihood for longitudinal neuroimaging data

Longitudinal imaging studies are essential to understanding the neural development of neuropsychiatric disorders, substance use disorders, and the normal brain. The main objective of this paper is to develop a two-stage adjusted exponentially tilted empirical likelihood (TETEL) for the spatial analysis of neuroimaging data from longitudinal studies. The TETEL method as a frequentist approach allows us to efficiently analyze longitudinal data without modeling temporal correlation and to classify different time-dependent covariate types. To account for spatial dependence, the TETEL method developed here specifically combines all the data in the closest neighborhood of each voxel (or pixel) on a 3-dimensional (3D) volume (or 2D surface) with appropriate weights to calculate adaptive parameter estimates and adaptive test statistics. Simulation studies are used to examine the finite sample performance of the adjusted exponential tilted likelihood ratio statistic and TETEL. We demonstrate the application of our statistical methods to the detection of the difference in the morphological changes of the hippocampus across time between schizophrenia patients and healthy subjects in a longitudinal schizophrenia study.
