The Cost of Context: Mitigating Textual Bias in Multimodal Retrieval-Augmented Generation

While Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) are increasingly integrated with Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) to mitigate hallucinations, the introduction of external documents can conceal severe failure modes at the instance level. We identify and formalize the phenomenon of recorruption, where the introduction of even perfectly accurate "oracle" context causes a capable model to abandon an initially correct prediction. Through a mechanistic diagnosis of internal attention matrices, we show that recorruption is driven by a two-fold attentional collapse: (1) visual blindness, characterized by the systemic suppression of visual attention mass ($M_{vis}$) and sharpness ($S_{vis}$), and (2) a structural positional bias that forces the model to prioritize boundary tokens over semantic relevance. Our analysis reveals an Illusion of Success, demonstrating that many seemingly correct RAG outcomes are merely positional coincidences where the model's textual copying bias happens to align with the ground-truth location. To address these vulnerabilities, we propose Bottleneck Attention Intervention for Recovery (BAIR), a parameter-free, inference-time framework that restores visual saliency and applies position-aware penalties to textual distractors. Across medical factuality, social fairness, and geospatial benchmarks, BAIR successfully restores multimodal grounding and improves diagnostic reliability without requiring model retraining or fine-tuning.

A Unified Study of Machine Learning Explanation Evaluation Metrics

The growing need for trustworthy machine learning has led to the blossom of interpretability research. Numerous explanation methods have been developed to serve this purpose. However, these methods are deficiently and inappropriately evaluated. Many existing metrics for explanations are introduced by researchers as by-products of their proposed explanation techniques to demonstrate the advantages of their methods. Although widely used, they are more or less accused of problems. We claim that the lack of acknowledged and justified metrics results in chaos in benchmarking these explanation methods -- Do we really have good/bad explanation when a metric gives a high/low score? We split existing metrics into two categories and demonstrate that they are insufficient to properly evaluate explanations for multiple reasons. We propose guidelines in dealing with the problems in evaluating machine learning explanation and encourage researchers to carefully deal with these problems when developing explanation techniques and metrics.

Forecasting: theory and practice

Forecasting has always been at the forefront of decision making and planning. The uncertainty that surrounds the future is both exciting and challenging, with individuals and organisations seeking to minimise risks and maximise utilities. The large number of forecasting applications calls for a diverse set of forecasting methods to tackle real-life challenges. This article provides a non-systematic review of the theory and the practice of forecasting. We provide an overview of a wide range of theoretical, state-of-the-art models, methods, principles, and approaches to prepare, produce, organise, and evaluate forecasts. We then demonstrate how such theoretical concepts are applied in a variety of real-life contexts. We do not claim that this review is an exhaustive list of methods and applications. However, we wish that our encyclopedic presentation will offer a point of reference for the rich work that has been undertaken over the last decades, with some key insights for the future of forecasting theory and practice. Given its encyclopedic nature, the intended mode of reading is non-linear. We offer cross-references to allow the readers to navigate through the various topics. We complement the theoretical concepts and applications covered by large lists of free or open-source software implementations and publicly-available databases.

Single-photon transport in one-dimensional coupled-resonator waveguide with second order nonlinearity coupling to a nanocavity containing a two-level atom and Kerr nonlinearity

We study controllable single photon scattering in a one-dimensional waveguide coupling with an additional cavity by second order nonlinear materials in a non-cascading configuration, where the additional cavity is embedded with two-level atom and filled with Kerr-nonlinear materials. Considering the second order nonlinear coupling, we analyze the transmission properties of the three different coupling forms as follows: (i) The two-level atom is excited without the Kerr-nonlinearity. (ii)The Kerr-nonlinearity is excited without the two-level atom. (iii) Both of the two-level atom and Kerr-nonlinearity are excited. The transmission and reflection amplitudes are obtained by the discrete coordinates approach for the three cases. The results showed that the transmission properties can be adjusted by the above three different coupling forms, which indicate our scheme can be used as a single photon switch to control the transmission and reflection of the single photon in the one-dimensional coupled resonant waveguide. We compared the results with [Phys. Rev. A 85, 053840(2012)] and find the advantages.

Unconventional photon blockade based on double second order nonlinear coupling system

In the recent publications [Phys. Rev. A 92,023838 (2015)], the unconventional photon blockade are studied in a two-mode-second-order-nonlinear system with nonlinear coupling between the low frequency and high frequency modes. In this paper, we study the unconventional photon blockade in a three-mode system with weakly coupled nonlinear cavities via $χ^{(2)}$ nonlinearity. By solving the master equation in the steady-state limit and calculating the zero-delay time second-order correlation function, we obtain the conditions of strong photon antibunching in the low frequency mode. The numerical result are compared with the analytical results, the results show that they are in complete agreement. By the analysis of numerical solutions, we find that this scheme is not sensitive to the change of decay rates and the reservoir temperature, and the three-mode drives make the system have more adjustable parameters, both of which increases the possibility of experimental implementation.

Rates of convergence of extremes from skew normal samples

For a skew normal random sequence, convergence rates of the distribution of its partial maximum to the Gumbel extreme value distribution are derived. The asymptotic expansion of the distribution of the normalized maximum is given under an optimal choice of norming constants. We find that the optimal convergence rate of the normalized maximum to the Gumbel extreme value distribution is proportional to $1/\log n$.

Spin squeezing and concurrence

We study the relations between spin squeezing and concurrence, and find that they are qualitatively equivalent for an ensemble of spin-1/2 particles with exchange symmetry and parity, if we adopt the spin squeezing criterion given by the recent work (G. Toth et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 99, 250405 (2007)). This suggests that the spin squeezing has more intimate relations with pairwise entanglement. We exemplify the result by considering a superposition of two Dicke states.

Spin Squeezing, Negative Correlations, and Concurrence in the Quantum Kicked Top Model

We study spin squeezing, negative correlations, and concurrence in the quantum kicked top model. We prove that the spin squeezing and negative correlations are equivalent for spin systems with only symmetric Dicke states populated. We numerically analyze spin squeezing parameters and concurrence in this model, and find that the maximal spin squeezing direction, which refers to the minimal pairwise correlation direction, is strongly influenced by quantum chaos. Entanglement (spin squeezing) sudden death and sudden birth occur alternatively for the periodic and quasi-periodic cases, while only entanglement (spin squeezing) sudden death is found for the chaotic case.
