An unfitted finite element method with direct extension stabilization for time-harmonic Maxwell problems on smooth domains

We propose an unfitted finite element method for numerically solving the time-harmonic Maxwell equations on a smooth domain. The model problem involves a Lagrangian multiplier to relax the divergence constraint of the vector unknown. The embedded boundary of the domain is allowed to cut through the background mesh arbitrarily. The unfitted scheme is based on a mixed interior penalty formulation, where Nitsche penalty method is applied to enforce the boundary condition in a weak sense, and a penalty stabilization technique is adopted based on a local direct extension operator to ensure the stability for cut elements. We prove the inf-sup stability and obtain optimal convergence rates under the energy norm and the $L^2$ norm for both the vector unknown and the Lagrangian multiplier. Numerical examples in both two and three dimensions are presented to illustrate the accuracy of the method.

Analysis of a class of globally divergence-free HDG methods for stationary Navier-Stokes equations

This paper analyzes a class of globally divergence-free (and therefore pressure-robust) hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) finite element methods for stationary Navier-Stokes equations. The methods use the $\mathcal{P}_{k}/\mathcal{P}_{k-1}$ $(k\geq1)$ discontinuous finite element combination for the velocity and pressure approximations in the interior of elements, and piecewise $\mathcal{P}_k/\mathcal{P}_{k}$ for the trace approximations of the velocity and pressure on the inter-element boundaries. It is shown that the uniqueness condition for the discrete solution is guaranteed by that for the continuous solution together with a sufficiently small mesh size. Based on the derived discrete HDG Sobolev embedding properties, optimal error estimates are obtained. Numerical experiments are performed to verify the theoretical analysis.

Convergence of a spatial semi-discretization for a backward semilinear stochastic parabolic equation

This paper studies the convergence of a spatial semi-discretization for a backward semilinear stochastic parabolic equation. The filtration is general, and the spatial semi-discretization uses the standard continuous piecewise linear element method. Firstly, higher regularity of the solution to the continuous equation is derived. Secondly, the first-order spatial accuracy is derived for the spatial semi-discretization. Thirdly, an application of the theoretical result to a stochastic linear quadratic control problem is presented.

Error estimation of a discontinuous Galerkin method for time fractional subdiffusion problems with nonsmooth data

This paper is devoted to the numerical analysis of a piecewise constant discontinuous Galerkin method for time fractional subdiffusion problems. The regularity of weak solution is firstly established by using variational approach and Mittag-Leffler function. Then several optimal error estimates are derived with low regularity data. Finally, numerical experiments are conducted to verify the theoretical results.

L1 scheme for solving an inverse problem subject to a fractional diffusion equation

This paper considers the temporal discretization of an inverse problem subject to a time fractional diffusion equation. Firstly, the convergence of the L1 scheme is established with an arbitrary sectorial operator of spectral angle $< π/2 $, that is the resolvent set of this operator contains $ \{z\in\mathbb C\setminus\{0\}:\ |\operatorname{Arg} z|< θ\}$ for some $ π/2 < θ< π$. The relationship between the time fractional order $α\in (0, 1)$ and the constants in the error estimates is precisely characterized, revealing that the L1 scheme is robust as $ α$ approaches $ 1 $. Then an inverse problem of a fractional diffusion equation is analyzed, and the convergence analysis of a temporal discretization of this inverse problem is given. Finally, numerical results are provided to confirm the theoretical results.

Mixed finite element methods for the ferrofluid model with magnetization paralleled to the magnetic field

Mixed finite element methods are considered for a ferrofluid flow model with magnetization paralleled to the magnetic field. The ferrofluid model is a coupled system of the Maxwell equations and the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. By skillfully introducing some new variables, the model is rewritten as several decoupled subsystems that can be solved independently. Mixed finite element formulations are given to discretize the decoupled systems with proper finite element spaces. Existence and uniqueness of the mixed finite element solutions are shown, and optimal order error estimates are obtained under some reasonable assumptions. Numerical experiments confirm the theoretical results.

Temporal semi-discretizations of a backward semilinear stochastic evolution equation

This paper studies the convergence of three temporal semi-discretizations for a backward semilinear stochastic evolution equation. For general terminal value and general coefficient with Lipschitz continuity, the convergence of the first two temporal semi-discretizations is established, and an explicit convergence rate is derived for the third temporal semi-discretization. The third temporal semi-discretization is applied to a general stochastic linear quadratic control problem, and the convergence of a temporally semi-discrete approximation to the optimal control is established.

An interface/boundary-unfitted eXtended HDG method for linear elasticity problems

An interface/boundary-unfitted eXtended hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (X-HDG) method of arbitrary order is proposed for linear elasticity interface problems on unfitted meshes with respect to the interface and domain boundary. The method uses piecewise polynomials of degrees $k\ (>= 1)$ and $k-1$ respectively for the displacement and stress approximations in the interior of elements inside the subdomains separated by the interface, and piecewise polynomials of degree $k$ for the numerical traces of the displacement on the inter-element boundaries inside the subdomains and on the interface/boundary of the domain. Optimal error estimates in $L^2$-norm for the stress and displacement are derived. Finally, numerical experiments confirm the theoretical results and show that the method also applies to the case of crack-tip domain.

NFCNN: Toward a Noise Fusion Convolutional Neural Network for Image Denoising

Deep learning based methods have achieved the state-of-the-art performance in image denoising. In this paper, a deep learning based denoising method is proposed and a module called fusion block is introduced in the convolutional neural network. For this so-called Noise Fusion Convolutional Neural Network (NFCNN), there are two branches in its multi-stage architecture. One branch aims to predict the latent clean image, while the other one predicts the residual image. A fusion block is contained between every two stages by taking the predicted clean image and the predicted residual image as a part of inputs, and it outputs a fused result to the next stage. NFCNN has an attractive texture preserving ability because of the fusion block. To train NFCNN, a stage-wise supervised training strategy is adopted to avoid the vanishing gradient and exploding gradient problems. Experimental results show that NFCNN is able to perform competitive denoising results when compared with some state-of-the-art algorithms.

Semi-discrete and fully discrete HDG methods for Burgers' equation

This paper proposes semi-discrete and fully discrete hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) methods for the Burgers' equation in two and three dimensions. In the spatial discretization, we use piecewise polynomials of degrees $ k \ (k \geq 1), k-1$ and $ l \ (l=k-1; k) $ to approximate the scalar function, flux variable and the interface trace of scalar function, respectively. In the full discretization method, we apply a backward Euler scheme for the temporal discretization. Optimal a priori error estimates are derived. Numerical experiments are presented to support the theoretical results.

High order mixed finite elements with mass lumping for elasticity on triangular grids

A family of conforming mixed finite elements with mass lumping on triangular grids are presented for linear elasticity. The stress field is approximated by symmetric $H({\rm div})-P_k (k\geq 3)$ polynomial tensors enriched with higher order bubbles so as to allow mass lumping, which can be viewed as the Hu-Zhang elements enriched with higher order interior bubble functions. The displacement field is approximated by $C^{-1}-P_{k-1}$ polynomial vectors enriched with higher order terms to ensure the stability condition. For both the proposed mixed elements and their mass lumping schemes, optimal error estimates are derived for the stress with $H(\rm div)$ norm and the displacement with $L^2$ norm. Numerical results confirm the theoretical analysis.

Numerical analysis of two Galerkin discretizations with graded temporal grids for fractional evolution equations

Two numerical methods with graded temporal grids are analyzed for fractional evolution equations. One is a low-order discontinuous Galerkin (DG) discretization in the case of fractional order $0<α<1$, and the other one is a low-order Petrov Galerkin (PG) discretization in the case of fractional order $1<α<2$. By a new duality technique, pointwise-in-time error estimates of first-order and $ (3-α) $-order temporal accuracies are respectively derived for DG and PG, under reasonable regularity assumptions on the initial value. Numerical experiments are performed to verify the theoretical results.

Analysis of a family of HDG methods for second order elliptic problems

In this paper, we analyze a family of hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) methods for second order elliptic problems in two and three dimensions. The methods use piecewise polynomials of degree $k\geqslant 0$ for both the flux and numerical trace, and piecewise polynomials of degree $k+1 $ for the potential. We establish error estimates for the numerical flux and potential under the minimal regularity condition. Moreover, we construct a local postprocessing for the flux, which produces a numerical flux with better conservation. Numerical experiments in two-space dimensions confirm our theoretical results.

Analysis of a two-level algorithm for HDG methods for diffusion problems

This paper analyzes an abstract two-level algorithm for hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) methods in a unified fashion. We use an extended version of the Xu-Zikatanov (X-Z) identity to derive a sharp estimate of the convergence rate of the algorithm, and show that the theoretical results also apply to weak Galerkin (WG) methods. The main features of our analysis are twofold: one is that we only need the minimal regularity of the model problem; the other is that we do not require the triangulations to be quasi-uniform. Numerical experiments are provided to confirm the theoretical results.

BPX preconditioner for nonstandard finite element methods for diffusion problems

This paper proposes and analyzes an optimal preconditioner for a general linear symmetric positive definite (SPD) system by following the basic idea of the well-known BPX framework. The SPD system arises from a large number of nonstandard finite element methods for diffusion problems, including the well-known hybridized Raviart-Thomas (RT) and Brezzi-Douglas-Marini (BDM) mixed element methods, the hybridized discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) method, the Weak Galerkin (WG) method, and the nonconforming Crouzeix-Raviart (CR) element method. We prove that the presented preconditioner is optimal, in the sense that the condition number of the preconditioned system is independent of the mesh size. Numerical experiments are provided to confirm the theoretical results.

Hybrid stress quadrilateral finite element approximation for stochastic plane elasticity equations

This paper considers stochastic hybrid stress quadrilateral finite element analysis of plane elasticity equations with stochastic Young's modulus and stochastic loads. Firstly, we apply Karhunen-Lo$\grave{e}$ve expansion to stochastic Young's modulus and stochastic loads so as to turn the original problem into a system containing a finite number of deterministic parameters. Then we deal with the stochastic field and the space field by $k-$version/$p-$version finite element methods and a hybrid stress quadrilateral finite element method, respectively. We show that the derived a priori error estimates are uniform with respect to the Lam$\acute{e}$ constant $λ\in (0, +\infty)$. Finally, we provide some numerical results.

Superconvergence and recovery type a posteriori error estimation for hybrid stress finite element method

Superconvergence and a posteriori error estimators of recovery type are analyzed for the 4-node hybrid stress quadrilateral finite element method proposed by Pian and Sumihara (Int. J. Numer. Meth. Engrg., 1984, 20: 1685-1695) for linear elasticity problems. Uniform superconvergence of order $O(h^{1+\min\{α,1\}})$ with respect to the Lamé constant $λ$ is established for both the recovered gradients of the displacement vector and the stress tensor under a mesh assumption, where $α>0$ is a parameter characterizing the distortion of meshes from parallelograms to quadrilaterals. A posteriori error estimators based on the recovered quantities are shown to be asymptotically exact. Numerical experiments confirm the theoretical results.

A two-level algorithm for the weak Galerkin discretization of diffusion problems

This paper analyzes a two-level algorithm for the weak Galerkin (WG) finite element methods based on local Raviart-Thomas (RT) and Brezzi-Douglas-Marini (BDM) mixed elements for two- and three-dimensional diffusion problems with Dirichlet condition. We first show the condition numbers of the stiffness matrices arising from the WG methods are of $O(h^{-2})$. We use an extended version of the Xu-Zikatanov (XZ) identity to derive the convergence of the algorithm without any regularity assumption. Finally we provide some numerical results.

An adaptive hybrid stress transition quadrilateral finite element method for linear elasticity

In this paper, we discuss an adaptive hybrid stress finite element method on quadrilateral meshes for linear elasticity problems. To deal with hanging nodes arising in the adaptive mesh refinement, we propose new transition types of hybrid stress quadrilateral elements with 5 to 7 nodes. In particular, we derive a priori error estimation for the 5-node transition hybrid stress element to show that it is free from Poisson-locking, in the sense that the error bound in the a priori estimate is independent of the Lame constant $λ$. We introduce, for quadrilateral meshes, refinement/coarsening algorithms, which do not require storing the refinement tree explicitly, and give an adaptive algorithm. Finally we provide some numerical results.

Analysis of hybrid methods of mixed-shear-projected triangular and quadrilateral elements for Reissner-Mindlin plates

It is known that the 3-node hybrid triangular element MiSP3 and 4-node hybrid quadrilateral element MiSP4 presented by Ayad, Dhatt and Batoz (Int. J. Numer. Meth. Engng 1998, 42: 1149-1179) for Reissner-Mindlin plates behave robustly in numerical benchmark tests. These two elements are based on Hellinger-Reissner variational principle, where continuous piecewise linear/isoparametric bilinear interpolations, as well as the mixed shear interpolation/projection technique of MITC family, are used for the approximations of displacements, and piecewise-independent equilibrium modes are used for the approximation of bending moments/shear stresses. We show that the MiSP3 and MiSP4 elements are uniformly stable with respect to the plate thickness and thus free from shear-locking.

Convergence of adaptive mixed finite element method for convection-diffusion-reaction equations

We prove the convergence of an adaptive mixed finite element method (AMFEM) for (nonsymmetric) convection-diffusion-reaction equations. The convergence result holds from the cases where convection or reaction is not present to convection-or reaction-dominated problems. A novel technique of analysis is developed without any quasi orthogonality for stress and displacement variables, and without marking the oscillation dependent on discrete solutions and data. We show that AMFEM is a contraction of the error of the stress and displacement variables plus some quantity. Numerical experiments confirm the theoretical results.

New residual-based a posteriori error estimators for lowest-order Raviart-Thomas element approximation to convection-diffusion-reaction equations

A new technique of residual-type a posteriori error analysis is developed for the lowest-order Raviart-Thomas mixed finite element discretizations of convection-diffusion-reaction equations in two- or three-dimension. Both centered mixed scheme and upwind-weighted mixed scheme are considered. The a posteriori error estimators, derived for the stress variable error plus scalar displacement error in $L^{2}$-norm, can be directly computed with the solutions of the mixed schemes without any additional cost, and are robust with respect to the coefficients in the equations. Local efficiency dependent on local variations in coefficients is obtained without any saturation assumption, and holds from the cases where convection or reaction is not present to convection- or reaction-dominated problems. The main tools of analysis are the postprocessed approximation of scalar displacement, abstract error estimates, and the property of modified Oswald interpolation. Numerical experiments are reported to support our theoretical results and to show the competitive behavior of the proposed posteriori error estimates.

Residual-based a posteriori error estimation for multipoint flux mixed finite element methods

A novel residual-type {\it a posteriori} error analysis technique is developed for multipoint flux mixed finite element methods for flow in porous media in two or three space dimensions. The derived {\it a posteriori} error estimator for the velocity and pressure error in $L^{2}-$norm consists of discretization and quadrature indicators, and is shown to be reliable and efficient. The main tools of analysis are a locally postprocessed approximation to the pressure solution of an auxiliary problem and a quadrature error estimate. Numerical experiments are presented to illustrate the competitive behavior of the estimator.

Quasi-optimal convergence rate for adaptive mixed finite element methods

For adaptive mixed finite element methods (AMFEM), we first introduce the data oscillation to analyze, without the restriction that the inverse of the coefficient matrix of the partial differential equations (PDEs) is a piecewise polynomial matrix, efficiency of the a posteriori error estimator Presented by Carstensen [Math. Comput., 1997, 66: 465-476] for Raviart-Thomas, Brezzi-Douglas-Morini, Brezzi-Douglas-Fortin-Marini elements. Second, we prove that the sum of the stress variable error in a weighted norm and the scaled error estimator is of geometric decay, namely, it reduces with a fixed factor between two successive adaptive loops, up to an oscillation of the right-hand side term of the PDEs. Finally, with the help of this geometric decay, we show that the stress variable error in a weighted norm plus the oscillation of data yields a decay rate in terms of the number of degrees of freedom as dictated by the best approximation for this combined nonlinear quantity

Uniform convergence and a posteriori error estimation for assumed stress hybrid finite element methods

Assumed stress hybrid methods are known to improve the performance of standard displacement-based finite elements and are widely used in computational mechanics. The methods are based on the Hellinger-Reissner variational principle for the displacement and stress variables. This work analyzes two existing 4-node hybrid stress quadrilateral elements due to Pian and Sumihara [Int. J. Numer. Meth. Engng, 1984] and due to Xie and Zhou [Int. J. Numer. Meth. Engng, 2004], which behave robustly in numerical benchmark tests. For the finite elements, the isoparametric bilinear interpolation is used for the displacement approximation, while different piecewise-independent 5-parameter modes are employed for the stress approximation. We show that the two schemes are free from Poisson-locking, in the sense that the error bound in the a priori estimate is independent of the relevant Lame constant $λ$. We also establish the equivalence of the methods to two assumed enhanced strain schemes. Finally, we derive reliable and efficient residual-based a posteriori error estimators for the stress in $L^{2}$-norm and the displacement in $H^{1}$-norm, and verify the theoretical results by some numerical experiments.

Uniformly stable rectangular elements for fourth order elliptic singular perturbation problems

This paper analyzes rectangular finite element methods for fourth order elliptic singular perturbation problems. We show that the non-$C^0$ rectangular Morley element is uniformly convergent in the energy norm with respect to the perturbation parameter. We also propose a $C^0$ extended high order rectangular Morley element and prove the uniform convergence. Finally, we do some numerical experiments to confirm the theoretical results.
