A high-sensitivity fiber-coupled diamond magnetometer with surface coating

Nitrogen-vacancy quantum defects in diamond offer a promising platform for magnetometry because of their remarkable optical and spin properties. In this Letter, we present a high-sensitivity and wide-bandwidth fiber-based quantum magnetometer for practical applications. By coating the diamond surface with silver reflective film, both the fluorescence collection and excitation efficiency are enhanced. Additionally, tracking pulsed optically detected magnetic resonance spectrum allowed a magnetic field sensitivity of $35$ pT$/\sqrt{\rm{Hz}}$ and a bandwidth of $4.1$ KHz. Finally, this magnetometer was successfully applied to map the magnetic field induced by the current-carrying copper-wire mesh. Such a stable and compact magnetometry can provide a powerful tool in many areas of physical, chemical, and biological researches.

Focus the electromagnetic field to $10^{-6} λ$ for ultra-high enhancement of field-matter interaction

Focusing electromagnetic field to enhance the interaction with matter has been promoting researches and applications of nano electronics and photonics. Usually, the evanescent-wave coupling is adopted in various nano structures and materials to confine the electromagnetic field into a subwavelength space. Here, based on the direct coupling with confined electron oscillations in a nanowire, we demonstrate an extreme localization of microwave field down to 10$^{-6}λ$. A hybrid nanowire-bowtie antenna is further designed to focus the free-space microwave to this deep-subwavelength space. Detected by the nitrogen vacancy center in diamond, the field intensity and microwave-spin interaction strength are enhanced by 2.0$\times$10$^{8}$ and 1.4$\times$10$^{4}$ times, respectively. Such an extreme concentration of microwave field will further promote integrated quantum information processing, sensing and microwave photonics in a nanoscale system.

High resolution imaging with anomalous saturated excitation

The nonlinear fluorescence emission has been widely applied for the high spatial resolution optical imaging. Here, we studied the fluorescence anomalous saturating effect of the nitrogen vacancy defect in diamond. The fluorescence reduction was observed with high power laser excitation. It increased the nonlinearity of the fluorescence emission, and changed the spatial frequency distribution of the fluorescence image. We used a differential excitation protocol to extract the high spatial frequency information. By modulating the excitation laser's power, the spatial resolution of imaging was improved approximate 1.6 times in comparison with the confocal microscopy. Due to the simplicity of the experimental setup and data processing, we expect this method can be used for improving the spatial resolution of sensing and biological labeling with the defects in solids.

Robust optical-levitation-based metrology of nanoparticle's position and mass

Light has shown up an incredibe capability in precision measurement based on opto-mechanic interaction in high vacuum by isolating environment noises. However, there are still obstructions, such as displacement and mass estimation error, highly hampering the improvement of absolute accuracy at the nanoscale. Here, we present a nonlinearity based metrology to precisely measure the position and mass of a nanoparticle with optical levitation under $10^{-5}$ mbar, 6-order of magnitude lower than the electrostatic-force and stochastic-force-based counterparts. By precisely controlling the amplitude of the levitated nanoparticle at the nonlinear regime, we realized a feasible sub-picometer-level position measurement with an uncertainty of $1.0\%$ without the prior information of mass, which can be further applied to weigh the femtogram-level mass with an uncertainty of $2.2\%$. It will also pave the way to construct a well-calibrated opto-mechanic platform in high vacuum for high sensitivity and accuracy measurement in force and acceleration at the nanoscale and the study in quantum superposition at the mesoscopic scale.

Optical far-field super-resolution microscopy using nitrogen vacancy center ensemble in bulk diamond

We demonstrate an optical far-field super-resolution microscopy using array of nitrogen vacancy centers in bulk diamond as near-field optical probes. The local optical field, which transmits through the nanostructures on the diamond surface, is measured by detecting the charge state conversion of nitrogen vacancy center. And the locating of nitrogen vacancy center with spatial resolution of 6.1 nm is realized with the charge state depletion nanoscopy. The nanostructures on the surface of diamond are then imaged with resolution below optical diffraction limit. The results offer an approach to built a general-purpose optical super-resolution microscopy and a convenient platform for high spatial resolution quantum sensing with nitrogen vacancy center.

Reviving the precision of multiple entangled probes in an open system by simple $π$-pulse sequences

Quantum metrology with entangled states in realistic noisy environments always suffers from decoherence. Therefore, the measurement precision is greatly reduced. Here we applied the dynamical decoupling method to protect the $N$-qubit quantum metrology protocol and successfully revived the scaling of the measurement precision as ${N^{-k}}$ with $k\in \left[{5/6,11/12}\right]$. The degree of the precision revival, as determined by the noise spectrum distribution, indicates that the performance of the protected protocol can be further improved by controlling the noise spectrum. Such a protected protocol is proved to be universal for entanglement-based quantum metrology in the pure dephasing and relaxation noise, which should stimulate the development of practical quantum metrology for weak signal detection of microscopic physics.

Super-resolution quantum sensing using NV centers based on rotating linear polarized light and Monte-Carlo method

The nitrogen vacancy (NV) center in diamond has been widely applied for quantum information and sensing in last decade. Based on the laser polarization dependent excitation of fluorescence emission, we propose a super-resolution microscopy of NV center. A series of wide field images of NV centers are taken with different polarizations of the linear polarized excitation laser. The fluorescence intensity of NV center is changed with the relative angle between excitation laser polarization and the orientation of NV center dipole. The images pumped by different excitation laser polarizations are analyzed with Monte Carlo method. Then the symmetry axis and position of NV center are obtained with sub-diffraction resolution.

Photonic Simulation of System-Environment Interaction: Non-Markovian Process and Dynamical Decoupling

The system-environment interaction is simulated by light propagating in coupled photonic waveguides. The profile of the electromagnetic field provides intuitive physical insight to study the Markovian and non-Markovian dynamics of open quantum systems. The transition from non-Markovian to Markovian process is demonstrated by increasing the size of environment, as the energy evolution changes from oscillating to an exponential decay, and the revival period increases. Moreover, the dynamical decoupling with a sequence of phase modulations is introduced to such a photonic open system to form a band structure in time dimension, where the energy dissipation can be significantly accelerated or inhibited. It opens the possibility to tune the dissipation in photonic system, similar to the dynamic decoupling of spins.

Quantum statistical imaging of particles without restriction of the diffraction limit

A practical quantum measurement method based on the quantum nature of anti-bunching photon emission has been developed to detect single particles without the restriction of the diffraction limit. By simultane- ously counting the single-photon and two-photon signals with fluorescence microscopy, the images of nearby Nitrogen-Vacancy centers in diamond at a distance of 8.5+/-2.4 nm have been successfully reconstructed. Also their axes information was optically obtained. This quantum statistical imaging technique, with a simple exper- imental setup, can also be easily generalized in the measuring and distinguishing of other physical properties with any overlapping, which shows high potential in future image and study of coupled quantum systems for quantum information techniques.

Movable Fiber-Integrated Hybrid Plasmonic Waveguide on Metal Film

A waveguide structure consisting of a tapered nanofiber on a metal film is proposed and analyzed to support highly localized hybrid plasmonic modes. The hybrid plasmonic mode can be efficiently excited through the in-line tapered fiber based on adiabatic conversion and collected by the same fiber, which is very convenient in the experiment. Due to the ultrasmall mode area of plasmonic mode, the local electromagnetic field is greatly enhanced in this movable waveguide, which is potential for enhanced coherence light emitter interactions, such as waveguide quantum electrodynamics, single emitter spectrum and nonlinear optics.
