CZTS Raman spectra beyond kesterite: a first-principles study

Cu$_2$ZnSnS$_4$ is an earth-abundant photovoltaic absorber material predicted to provide a sustainable solution for commercial solar applications. One of the main limitations restricting its commercialization is the issue of cation disorder. Raman spectroscopy has been a sought after technique to characterize disorder in CZTS while a clear consensus between theoretical and experimental results is yet to be achieved. In the present study, via the virtual crystal approximation, we take into account the progressive nature of Cu-Zn disorder in CZTS: we obtain the phonon frequencies at zone-center within the density functional perturbation theory formalism, and further compute the Raman spectra for the disordered phases, achieving a consensus between theory and experiment. These calculations confirm the presence of complete disorder in Cu-Zn 2$a$, 2$c$ and 2$d$ Wyckoff sites. They also show that the Raman intensities of two prominent $A$ phonon modes characterized by motion of S atoms, also known to be experimentally significant, play a key role in understanding the nature of disorder in CZTS.

First-principles investigation of the structural, dynamical and dielectric properties of kesterite, stannite and PMCA phases of Cu2ZnSnS4

Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS) is a promising material as an absorber in photovoltaic applications. The measured efficiency, however, is far from the theoretically predicted value for the known CZTS phases. To improve the understanding of this discrepancy we investigate the structural, dynamical, and dielectric of the three main phases of CZTS (kesterite, stannite, and PMCA) using density functional perturbation theory (DFPT). The effect of the exchange-correlation functional on the computed properties is analyzed. A qualitative agreement of the theoretical Raman spectrum with measurements is observed. However, none of the phases correspond to the experimental spectrum within the error bar that is usually to be expected for DFPT. This corroborates the need to consider cation disorder and other lattice defects extensively in this material.

Origin of magnetism and quasiparticles properties in Cr-doped TiO$_2$

Combining LSDA+$U$ and an analysis of superexchange interactions beyond DFT, we describe the magnetic ground states in rutile and anatase Cr-doped TiO$_2$. In parallel, we correct our LSDA+$U$ ground state through GW corrections ($GW$@LSDA+$U$) that reproduce the position of impurity states and the band gaps in satisfying agreement with experiments. Because of the different topological coordinations of Cr-Cr bonds in the ground states of rutile and anatase, superexchange interactions induce either ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic couplings of Cr ions. In Cr-doped anatase, this interaction leads to a new mechanism which stabilizes a ferromagnetic ground state, in keeping with experimental evidence, without the need to invoke F-center exchange.

Structural, electronic, vibrational and dielectric properties of LaBGeO$_5$ from first principles

Structural, electronic, vibrational and dielectric properties of LaBGeO$_5$ with the stillwellite structure are determined based on \textit{ab initio} density functional theory. The theoretically relaxed structure is found to agree well with the existing experimental data with a deviation of less than $0.2\%$. Both the density of states and the electronic band structure are calculated, showing five distinct groups of valence bands. Furthermore, the Born effective charge, the dielectric permittivity tensors, and the vibrational frequencies at the center of the Brillouin zone are all obtained. Compared to existing model calculations, the vibrational frequencies are found in much better agreement with the published experimental infrared and Raman data, with absolute and relative rms values of 6.04 cm$^{-1}$, and $1.81\%$, respectively. Consequently, numerical values for both the parallel and perpendicular components of the permittivity tensor are established as 3.55 and 3.71 (10.34 and 12.28), respectively, for the high-(low-)frequency limit.

Verification of first-principles codes: comparison of total energies, phonon frequencies, electron-phonon coupling and zero-point motion correction to the gap between ABINIT and QE/Yambo

With the ever-increasing sophistication of codes, the verification of the implementation of advanced theoretical formalisms becomes critical. In particular, cross comparison between different codes provides a strong hint in favor of the correctness of the implementations, and a measure of the (hopefully small) possible numerical differences. We lead a rigorous and careful study of the quantities that enter in the calculation of the zero-point motion renormalization of the direct band gap of diamond due to electron-phonon coupling, starting from the total energy, and going through the computation of phonon frequencies and electron-phonon matrix elements. We rely on two independent implementations : Quantum Espresso + Yambo and ABINIT. We provide the order of magnitude of the numerical discrepancies between the codes, that are present for the different quantities: less than $10^{-5}$ Hartree per atom on the total energy (-5.722 Ha/at), less than 0.07 cm$^{-1}$ on the $Γ,L,X$ phonon frequencies (555 to 1330 cm$^{-1}$), less than 0.5% on the square of the electron-phonon matrix elements and less than 4 meV on the zero-point motion renormalization of each eigenenergies (44 to 264 meV). Within our approximations, the DFT converged direct band gap renormalization in diamond due to the electron-phonon coupling is -0.409 eV (reduction of the band gap).

Density-operator theory of orbital magnetic susceptibility in periodic insulators

The theoretical treatment of homogeneous static magnetic fields in periodic systems is challenging, as the corresponding vector potential breaks the translational invariance of the Hamiltonian. Based on density operators and perturbation theory, we propose, for insulators, a periodic framework for the treatment of magnetic fields up to arbitrary order of perturbation, similar to widely used schemes for electric fields. The second-order term delivers a new, remarkably simple, formulation of the macroscopic orbital magnetic susceptibility for periodic insulators. We validate the latter expression using a tight-binding model, analytically from the present theory and numerically from the large-size limit of a finite cluster, with excellent numerical agreement.

Density-Polarization Functional Theory of the response of a periodic insulating solid to an electric field.

The response of an infinite, periodic, insulating, solid to an infinitesimally small electric field is investigated in the framework of Density Functional Theory. We find that the applied perturbing potential is not a unique functional of the periodic density change~: it depends also on the change in the macroscopic {\em polarization}. Moreover, the dependence of the exchange-correlation energy on polarization induces an exchange-correlation electric field. These effects are exhibited for a model semiconductor. We also show that the scissor-operator technique is an approximate way of bypassing this polarization dependence.
