Variational corner transfer matrix renormalization group method for classical statistical models

In the context of tensor network states, we for the first time reformulate the corner transfer matrix renormalization group (CTMRG) method into a variational bilevel optimization algorithm. The solution of the optimization problem corresponds to the fixed-point environment pursued in the conventional CTMRG method, from which the partition function of a classical statistical model, represented by an infinite tensor network, can be efficiently evaluated. The validity of this variational idea is demonstrated by the high-precision calculation of the residual entropy of the dimer model, and is further verified by investigating several typical phase transitions in classical spin models, where the obtained critical points and critical exponents all agree with the best known results in literature. Its extension to three-dimensional tensor networks or quantum lattice models is straightforward, as also discussed briefly.

Half-metallic state and magnetic properties versus the lattice constant in Zr2RhZ (Z = Al, Ga, In) Heusler alloys

The half metallic and magnetic properties of Zr2RhZ (Z = Al, Ga, In) alloys with an Hg2CuTi-type structure were systematically investigated using the first-principle calculations. Zr2RhZ (Z = Al, Ga, In) alloys are predicted to be half-metallic ferrimagnets at their equilibrium lattice constants. The Zr2Rh-based alloys have Mt (the total magnetic moment per unit cell) and Zt (the valence concentration) values that in agreement with Slater-Pauling rule Mt = Zt -18. The half-metallic properties and the magnetic properties at different lattice constants are discussed in detail. We expect that our results may trigger Zr2RhZ (Z = Al, Ga, In) applying in the future spintronics field.

Non-canonical statistics of finite quantum system

The canonical statistics describes the statistical properties of an open system by assuming its coupling with the heat bath infinitesimal in comparison with the total energy in thermodynamic limit. In this paper, we generally derive a non-canonical distribution for the open system with a finite coupling to the heat bath, which deforms the energy shell to effectively modify the conventional canonical way. The obtained non-canonical distribution reflects the back action of system on the bath, and thus depicts the statistical correlations through energy fluctuations.

Synchro-thermalization of composite quantum system

We study the thermalization of a composite quantum system consisting of several subsystems, where only a small one of the subsystem contacts with a heat bath in equilibrium, while the rest of the composite system is contact free. We show that the whole composite system still can be thermalized after a relaxation time long enough, if the energy level structure of the composite system is connected, which means any two energy levels of the composite system can be connected by direct or indirect quantum transitions. With an example where an multi-level system interacts with a set of harmonic oscillators via non-demolition coupling, we find that the speed of relaxation to the global thermal state is suppressed by the multi-Franck-Condon factor due to the displacements of the Fock states when the degrees of freedom is large.

Interface Ferromagnetism in (110)-Oriented La0.7Sr0.3MnO3/SrTiO3 Ultrathin Superlattices

We explore manganite interface magnetism in epitaxially grown La0.7Sr0.3MnO3(LSMO)/SrTiO3 ultrathin superlattices (SL) along (110) orientation. we show that robust ferromagnetism persists down to four monolayers LSMO(MLs) (~1.1 nm in thickness), of which 50% Mn is at the interface state. Above eight MLs, the magnetic moment is nearly saturated to the theoretical value of 3.7u_B, with an estimated interface moment of 3.2u_B. In comparison to (100)-oriented SLs which were previously shown to have a spin canted ground state, (110)-oriented SLs exhibit stronger low-dimensional ferromagnetism and better metallicity, suggesting a ferromagnetic interface spin state well suited for all-oxide spintronic devices. The underlining mechanism is qualitatively discussed.

Quantum Thermalization With Couplings

We study the role of the system-bath coupling for the generalized canonical thermalization [S. Popescu, et al., Nature Physics 2,754(2006) and S. Goldstein et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 96, 050403(2006)] that reduces almost all the pure states of the "universe" [formed by a system S plus its surrounding heat bath $B$] to a canonical equilibrium state of S. We present an exactly solvable, but universal model for this kinematic thermalization with an explicit consideration about the energy shell deformation due to the interaction between S and B. By calculating the state numbers of the "universe" and its subsystems S and B in various deformed energy shells, it is found that, for the overwhelming majority of the "universe" states (they are entangled at least), the diagonal canonical typicality remains robust with respect to finite interactions between S and B. Particularly, the kinematic decoherence is utilized here to account for the vanishing of the off-diagonal elements of the reduced density matrix of S. It is pointed out that the non-vanishing off-diagonal elements due to the finiteness of bath and the stronger system-bath interaction might offer more novelties of the quantum thermalization.

Transient dynamics of light propagation in EIT medium and hidden symmetry of multi-bit quantum memory

We investigate the transient phenomenon or property of the propagation of an optical probe field in a medium consisting of many $Λ$-type three-level atoms coupled to this probe field and an classical driven field. We observe a hidden symmetry and obtain an exact solution for this light propagation problem by means of the spectral generating method. This solution enlightens us to propose a practical protocol implementing the quantum memory robust for quantum decoherence in a crystal. As an transient dynamic process this solution also manifests an exotic result that a wave-packet of light will split into three packets propagating at different group velocities. It is argued that "super-luminal group velocity" and "sub-luminal group velocity" can be observed simultaneously in the same system. This interesting phenomenon is expected to be demonstrated experimentally.

An quantum approach of measurement based on the Zurek's triple model

In a close form without referring the time-dependent Hamiltonian to the total system, a consistent approach for quantum measurement is proposed based on Zurek's triple model of quantum decoherence [W.Zurek, Phys. Rev. D 24, 1516 (1981)]. An exactly-solvable model based on the intracavity system is dealt with in details to demonstrate the central idea in our approach: by peeling off one collective variable of the measuring apparatus from its many degrees of freedom, as the pointer of the apparatus, the collective variable de-couples with the internal environment formed by the effective internal variables, but still interacts with the measured system to form a triple entanglement among the measured system, the pointer and the internal environment. As another mechanism to cause decoherence, the uncertainty of relative phase and its many-particle amplification can be summed up to an ideal entanglement or an Shmidt decomposition with respect to the preferred basis.

Consequences of 't Hooft's Equivalence Class Theory and Symmetry by Large Coarse Graining

According to 't Hooft (Class.Quantum.Grav. 16 (1999), 3263), quantum gravity can be postulated as a dissipative deterministic system, where quantum states at the ``atomic scale''can be understood as equivalence classes of primordial states governed by a dissipative deterministic dynamics law at the ``Planck scale''. In this paper, it is shown that for a quantum system to have an underlying deterministic dissipative dynamics, the time variable should be discrete if the continuity of its temporal evolution is required. Besides, the underlying deterministic theory also imposes restrictions on the energy spectrum of the quantum system. It is also found that quantum symmetry at the ``atomic scale'' can be induced from 't Hooft's Coarse Graining classification of primordial states at the "Planck scale".
