Equation of state and strangeness in neutron stars

A brief survey is presented of our present understanding of the equation-of-state of cold, dense matter and the speed of sound in the interior of neutron stars, based on the constraints inferred from observational data. The second part focuses on strangeness in baryonic matter and the role of hyperon-nuclear two- and three-body forces, with reference to the "hyperon puzzle" in neutron stars and possible scenarios for its solution.

Inference of the sound speed and related properties of neutron stars

Information on the phase structure of strongly interacting matter at high baryon densities can be gained from observations of neutron stars and their detailed analysis. In the present work Bayesian inference methods are used to set constraints on the speed of sound in the interior of neutron stars, based on recent multi-messenger data in combination with limiting conditions from nuclear physics at low densities. Two general parametric representations are introduced for the sound speed $c_s$ in order to examine the independence with respect to choices for the parametrisation of Priors. Credible regions for neutron star properties are analysed, in particular with reference to the quest for possible phase transitions in cold dense matter. The evaluation of Bayes factors implies extreme evidence for a violation of the conformal bound, $c_s^2 \leq 1/3$, inside neutron stars. Given the presently existing data base, it can be concluded that the occurrence of a first-order phase transition in the core of even a two-solar-mass neutron star is unlikely, while a continuous crossover cannot be ruled out. At the same time it is pointed out that the discovery of a superheavy neutron star with a mass $ M \sim 2.3 - 2.4\, M_\odot$ would strengthen evidence for a phase change in the deep interior of the star.

Theory of kaon-nuclear systems

The strong interaction between an antikaon and a nucleon is at the origin of various interesting phenomena in kaon-nuclear systems. In particular, the interaction in the isospin $I=0$ channel is sufficiently attractive to generate a quasi-bound state, the $Λ(1405)$ resonance, below the $\bar{K}N$ threshold. Based on this picture, it may be expected that the $\bar{K}N$ interaction also generates quasi-bound states in kaon-nuclear systems, sometimes called kaonic nuclei. At the same time, the $\bar{K}N$ quasi-bound picture of the $Λ(1405)$ is also related to the discussion of hadronic molecules in hadron spectroscopy. Here an overview is presented of the theoretical studies developed for kaon-nucleon and kaon-nuclear systems. We start from the modern understanding of the $Λ(1405)$ resonance. We then discuss the $\bar{K}N$ interaction and various aspects of few-body kaonic nuclei. Heavier kaon-nuclear systems are examined from the viewpoint of nuclear many-body physics, with focus on the properties of antikaons in nuclear matter. Related topics, such as the $K^{-}p$ momentum correlation functions in high-energy collisions and the studies of kaonic atoms, are also discussed.

$K^-p$ Correlation Function from High-Energy Nuclear Collisions and Chiral SU(3) Dynamics

The two-particle momentum correlation function of a K^-p pair from high-energy nuclear collisions is evaluated in the KbarN-piSigma-piLambda coupled-channels framework. The effects of all coupled channels together with the Coulomb potential and the threshold energy difference between K^-p and Kbar0 n are treated completely for the first time. Realistic potentials based on the chiral SU(3) dynamics are used which fit the available scattering data. The recently measured correlation function is found to be well reproduced by allowing variations of the source size and the relative weight of the source function of piSigma with respect to that of KbarN. The predicted K^-p correlation function from larger systems, which is less affected by the piSigma source function, indicates that the investigation of its source size dependence is useful in providing further constraints in the study of the KbarN interaction.

Continuity from neutron matter to two-flavor quark matter with $^1 S_0$ and $^3 P_2$ superfluidity

This study is performed with the aim of gaining insights into the possible applicability of the quark-hadron continuity concept, not only in the idealized case of three-flavor symmetric quark matter, but also for the transition from neutron matter to two-flavor quark matter. A key issue is the continuity between neutron superfluidity and a corresponding superfluid quark phase produced by $d$-quark pairing. Symmetry arguments are developed and relevant dynamical mechanisms are analyzed. It is pointed out that the $^3P_2$ superfluidity in dense neutron matter has a direct analogue in the $^3P_2$ pairing of $d$-quarks in two-flavor quark matter. This observation supports the idea that the quark-hadron continuity hypothesis may be valid for such systems. Possible implications for neutron stars are briefly discussed.

Hyperon-nuclear interactions from SU(3) chiral effective field theory

The interaction between hyperons and nucleons has a wide range of applications in strangeness nuclear physics and is a topic of continuing great interest. These interactions are not only important for hyperon-nucleon scattering but also essential as basic input to studies of hyperon-nuclear few- and many-body systems including hypernuclei and neutron star matter. We review the systematic derivation and construction of such baryonic forces from the symmetries of quantum chromodynamics within non-relativistic SU(3) chiral effective field theory. Several applications of the resulting potentials are presented for topics of current interest in strangeness nuclear physics.

Hyperon-nucleon three-body forces and strangeness in neutron stars

Three-body forces acting on a $Λ$ hyperon in a nuclear medium are investigated, with special focus on the so-called hyperon puzzle in neutron stars. The hyperon-nucleon two-body interaction deduced from SU(3) chiral effective field theory is employed at next-to-leading order. Hyperon-nucleon three-body forces are approximated using saturation by decuplet baryons and are transcribed to density-dependent effective two-body interactions. These together are taken as input in a Brueckner-Bethe-Goldstone equation with explicit treatment of the $ΛN\leftrightarrowΣN$ and $ΛNN\leftrightarrowΣNN$ coupled channels. Single-particle potentials of a $Λ$ hyperon in symmetric nuclear matter and neutron matter are calculated. With parameters of the $ΛNN$ three-body force constrained by hypernuclear phenomenology, extrapolations to high baryon density are performed. By comparison of the $Λ$ and neutron chemical potentials at densities characteristic of the core of neutron stars it is found that the combined repulsive effects of two- and three-body correlations makes the appearance of $Λ$ hyperons in neutron stars energetically unfavourable, thus offering a possible solution to a longstanding question.

Dense Baryonic Matter and Strangeness in Neutron Stars

Recent developments of chiral effective field theory (ChEFT) applications to nuclear and neutron matter are summarized, with special emphasis on a (non-perturbative) extension using functional renormalisation group methods. Topics include: nuclear thermodynamics, extrapolations to dense baryonic matter and constraints from neutron star observables. Hyperon-nuclear interactions derived from SU(3) will be discussed with reference to the "hyperon puzzle" in neutron star matter.

Neutron Star Matter as a Relativistic Fermi Liquid

The equation of state (EoS) of neutron star matter, constrained by the existence of two-solar-mass stars and gravitational wave signals from neutron star mergers, is analysed using the Landau theory of relativistic Fermi liquids. While the phase diagram of dense and cold QCD matter is still open for scenarios ranging from hadronic to quark matter in the center of neutron stars, a Fermi-liquid treatment is motivated by a microscopic approach starting from a chiral nucleon-meson field theory combined with nonperturbative functional renormalization group methods. In this scheme effects of multipionic fluctuations and repulsive nuclear many-body correlations suggest that the transition to chiral symmetry restoration is shifted to densities above those typically encountered in the neutron star core. Under such conditions a Fermi-liquid description in terms of nucleon quasiparticles appears to be justified. The leading Landau parameters are derived and discussed. Our results are contrasted with a well-known Fermi liquid, namely liquid $^3$He.

Antikaon-nucleon interaction and Lambda(1405) in chiral SU(3) dynamics

The properties of the Lambda(1405) resonance are key ingredients for determining the antikaon-nucleon interaction in strangeness nuclear physics, and the novel internal structure of the Lambda(1405) is of great interest in hadron physics, as a prototype case of a baryon that does not fit into the simple three-quark picture. We show that a quantitative description of the antikaon-nucleon interaction with the Lambda(1405) is achieved in the framework of chiral SU(3) dynamics, with the help of recent experimental progress. Further constraints on the Kbar N subthreshold interaction are provided by analyzing pi Sigma spectra in various processes, such as the K-d -> pi Sigma n reaction and the Lambda_c -> pi pi Sigma decay. The structure of the Lambda(1405) is found to be dominated by an antikaon-nucleon molecular configuration, based on its wavefunction derived from a realistic Kbar N potential and the compositeness criteria from a model-independent weak-binding relation.

Density-dependent effective baryon-baryon interaction from chiral three-baryon forces

A density-dependent effective potential for the baryon-baryon interaction in the presence of the (hyper)nuclear medium is constructed, based on the leading (irreducible) three-baryon forces derived within SU(3) chiral effective field theory. We evaluate the contributions from three classes: contact terms, one-pion exchange and two-pion exchange. In the strangeness-zero sector we recover the known result for the in-medium nucleon-nucleon interaction. Explicit expressions for the Lambda-nucleon in-medium potential in (asymmetric) nuclear matter are presented. Our results are suitable for implementation into calculations of (hyper)nuclear matter. In order to estimate the low-energy constants of the leading three-baryon forces we introduce the decuplet baryons as explicit degrees of freedom and construct the relevant terms in the minimal non-relativistic Lagrangian. With these, the constants are estimated through decuplet saturation. Utilizing this approximation we provide numerical results for the effect of the three-body force in symmetric nuclear matter and pure neutron matter on the Lambda-nucleon interaction. A moderate repulsion that increases with density is found in comparison to the free Lambda-nucleon interaction.

Leading three-baryon forces from SU(3) chiral effective field theory

Leading three-baryon forces are derived within SU(3) chiral effective field theory. Three classes of irreducible diagrams contribute: three-baryon contact terms, one-meson exchange and two-meson exchange diagrams. We provide the minimal non-relativistic terms of the chiral Lagrangian, that contribute to these diagrams. SU(3) relations are given for the strangeness S=0 and -1 sectors. In the strangeness-zero sector we recover the well-known three-nucleon forces from chiral effective field theory. Explicit expressions for the lambda-nucleon-nucleon chiral potential in isospin space are presented.

Phi meson spectral moments and QCD condensates in nuclear matter

A detailed analysis of the lowest two moments of the $ϕ$ meson spectral function in vacuum and nuclear matter is performed. The consistency is examined between the constraints derived from finite energy QCD sum rules and the spectra computed within an improved vector dominance model, incorporating the coupling of kanonic degrees of freedom with the bare $ϕ$ meson. In the vacuum, recent accurate measurements of the $e^+ e^- \to K^+ K^-$ cross section allow us to determine the spectral function with high precision. In nuclear matter, the modification of the spectral function can be described by the interactions of the kaons from $ϕ\rightarrow K\bar{K}$ with the surrounding nuclear medium. This leads primarily to a strong broadening and an asymmetric deformation of the $ϕ$ meson peak structure. We confirm that, both in vacuum and nuclear matter, the zeroth and first moments of the corresponding spectral functions satisfy the requirements of the finite energy sum rules to a remarkable degree of accuracy. Limits on the strangeness sigma term of the nucleon are examined in this context. Applying our results to the second moment of the spectrum, we furthermore discuss constraints on four-quark condensates and the validity of the commonly used ground state saturation approximation.

Structure of the $Λ(1405)$ and the $K^-d\rightarrowπΣn$ reaction

The $Λ(1405)$ resonance production reaction is investigated within the framework of the coupled-channels Alt-Grassberger-Sandhas (AGS) equations. We perform full three-body calculations for the $\bar{K}NN-πYN$ amplitudes on the physical real energy axis and investigate how the signature of the $Λ(1405)$ appears in the cross sections of the $K^-d\rightarrow πΣn$ reactions, also in view of the planned E31 experiment at J-PARC. Two types of meson-baryon interaction models are considered: an energy-dependent interaction based on chiral $SU(3)$ effective field theory, and an energy-independent version that has been used repeatedly in phenomenological approaches. These two models have different off-shell properties that imply correspondingly different behavior in the three-body system. We investigate how these features show up in differential cross sections of $K^- d\rightarrow πΣn$ reactions. Characteristic patterns distinguishing between the two models are found in the invariant mass spectrum of the final $πΣ$ state. The $K^-d\rightarrow πΣn$ reaction, with different ($π^{\pm}Σ^{\mp}$ and $π^{0}Σ^{0}$) charge combinations in the final state, is thus demonstrated to be a useful tool for investigating the subthreshold behavior of the $\bar{K}N$ interaction.

Chiral symmetry and effective field theories for hadronic, nuclear and stellar matter

Chiral symmetry, first entering in nuclear physics in the 1970's for which Gerry Brown played a seminal role, has led to a stunningly successful framework for describing strongly-correlated nuclear dynamics both in finite and infinite systems. We review how the early germinal idea, conceived with the soft-pion theorems in the pre-QCD era, has evolved into a highly predictive theoretical framework for nuclear physics, aptly assessed by Steven Weinberg: "it (chiral effective field theory) allows one to show in a fairly convincing way that what they (nuclear physicists) have been doing all along... is the correct first step in a consistent approximation scheme." Our review recounts both how the theory presently fares in confronting Nature and how one can understand its extremely intricate workings in terms of the multifaceted aspects of chiral symmetry, namely, chiral perturbation theory, skyrmions, Landau Fermi-liquid theory, the Cheshire cat phenomenon, and hidden local and mended symmetries.

Chiral symmetry breaking and confinement effects on dilepton and photon production around $T_c$

Production rates of dileptons and photons from the quark-gluon (QGP) phase are calculated taking into account effects of confinement and spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking (χSB) not far from the transition temperature $T_c$. We find that the production rates of dileptons with large momenta and of photons originating from the QGP around $T_c$ are suppressed by the χSB effect. We also discuss to what extent information about details of the chiral transition, such as its characteristic temperature range and the steepness of the crossover, are reflected in these quantities.

From asymmetric nuclear matter to neutron stars: a functional renormalization group study

A previous study of nuclear matter in a chiral nucleon-meson model is extended to isospin-asymmetric matter. Fluctuations beyond mean-field approximation are treated in the framework of the functional renormalization group. The nuclear liquid-gas phase transition is investigated in detail as a function of the proton fraction in asymmetric matter. The equations of state at zero temperature of both symmetric nuclear matter and pure neutron matter are found to be in good agreement with realistic many-body computations. We also study the density dependence of the pion mass in the medium. The question of chiral symmetry restoration in neutron matter is addressed; we find a stabilization of the phase with spontaneously broken chiral symmetry once fluctuations are included. Finally, neutron star matter including beta equilibrium is discussed. The model satisfies the constraints imposed by the existence of two-solar-mass neutron stars.

Moments of $ϕ$ meson spectral functions in vacuum and nuclear matter

Moments of the $ϕ$ meson spectral function in vacuum and in nuclear matter are analyzed, combining a model based on chiral SU(3) effective field theory (with kaonic degrees of freedom) and finite-energy QCD sum rules. For the vacuum we show that the spectral density is strongly constrained by a recent accurate measurement of the $e^+ e^- \to K^+ K^-$ cross section. In nuclear matter the $ϕ$ spectrum is modified by interactions of the decay kaons with the surrounding nuclear medium, leading to a significant broadening and an asymmetric deformation of the $ϕ$ meson peak. We demonstrate that both in vacuum and nuclear matter, the first two moments of the spectral function are compatible with finite-energy QCD sum rules. A brief discussion of the next-higher spectral moment involving strange four-quark condensates is also presented.

Resonances in QCD

We report on the EMMI Rapid Reaction Task Force meeting 'Resonances in QCD', which took place at GSI October 12-14, 2015. A group of 26 people met to discuss the physics of resonances in QCD. The aim of the meeting was defined by the following three key questions: What is needed to understand the physics of resonances in QCD? Where does QCD lead us to expect resonances with exotic quantum numbers? What experimental efforts are required to arrive at a coherent picture? For light mesons and baryons only those with ${\it up}$, ${\it down}$ and ${\it strange}$ quark content were considered. For heavy-light and heavy-heavy meson systems, those with ${\it charm}$ quarks were the focus. This document summarizes the discussions by the participants, which in turn led to the coherent conclusions we present here.

Shear Viscosities from Kubo Formalism in a large-$N_{\rm c}$ Nambu--Jona-Lasinio Model

In this work the shear viscosity of strongly interacting matter is calculated within a two-flavor Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model as a function of temperature and chemical potential. The general Kubo formula is applied, incorporating the full Dirac structure of the thermal quark spectral function and avoiding commonly used on-shell approximations. Mesonic fluctuations contributing via Fock diagrams provide the dominant dissipative processes. The resulting ratio $η/s$ (shear viscosity over entropy density) decreases with temperature and chemical potential. Interpolating between our NJL results at low temperatures and hard-thermal-loop results at high temperatures a minimum slightly above the AdS/CFT benchmark $η/s=1/4π$ is obtained.

$K^-d\rightarrow πΣn$ reactions and structure of the $Λ(1405)$

We report on the first results of a full three-body calculation of the $\bar{K}NN$-$πYN$ amplitude for the $K^-d\rightarrowπΣn$ reaction, and examine how the $Λ(1405)$ resonance manifests itself in the neutron energy distributions of $K^-d\rightarrowπΣn$ reactions. The amplitudes are computed using the $\bar{K}NN$-$πYN$ coupled-channels Alt-Grassberger-Sandhas (AGS) equations. Two types of models are considered for the two-body meson-baryon interactions: an energy-independent interaction and an energy-dependent one, both derived from the leading order chiral SU(3) Lagrangian. These two models have different off-shell properties that cause correspondingly different behaviors in the three-body system. As a remarkable result of this investigation, it is found that the neutron energy spectrum, reflecting the $Λ(1405)$ mass distribution and width, depends quite sensitively on the (energy-dependent or energy-independent) model used. Hence accurate measurements of the $πΣ$ mass distribution have the potential to discriminate between possible mechanisms at work in the formation of the $Λ(1405)$.

Alpha-clustered hypernuclei and chiral SU(3) dynamics

Light hypernuclei with an $α$ cluster substructure of the core nucleus are studied using an accurate cluster approach (the Hyper-THSR wave function) in combination with a density-dependent $Λ$ hyperon-nuclear interaction derived from chiral SU(3) effective field theory. This interaction includes important two-pion exchange processes involving $ΣN$ intermediate states and associated three-body mechanisms as well as effective mass and surface terms arising in a derivative expansion of the in-medium $Λ$ self-energy. Applications and calculated results are presented and discussed for $_Λ^9$Be and $^{13}_Λ$C. Furthermore, the result of the lightest $α$ clustered hypernucleus, $^5_Λ$He using realistic $ab initio$ four nucleon density is shown.

Dense baryonic matter: constraints from recent neutron star observations

Updated constraints from neutron star masses and radii impose stronger restrictions on the equation of state for baryonic matter at high densities and low temperatures. The existence of two-solar-mass neutron stars rules out many soft equations of state with prominent "exotic" compositions. The present work reviews the conditions required for the pressure as a function of baryon density in order to satisfy these new constraints. Several scenarios for sufficiently stiff equations of state are evaluated. The common starting point is a realistic description of both nuclear and neutron matter based on a chiral effective field theory approach to the nuclear many-body problem. Possible forms of hybrid matter featuring a quark core in the center of the star are discussed using a three-flavor Polyakov--Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (PNJL) model. It is found that a conventional equation of state based on nuclear chiral dynamics meets the astrophysical constraints. Hybrid matter generally turns out to be too soft unless additional strongly repulsive correlations, e.g. through vector current interactions between quarks, are introduced. The extent to which strangeness can accumulate in the equation of state is also discussed.

Functional renormalization group approach to neutron matter

The chiral nucleon-meson model, previously applied to systems with equal number of neutrons and protons, is extended to asymmetric nuclear matter. Fluctuations are included in the framework of the functional renormalization group. The equation of state for pure neutron matter is studied and compared to recent advanced many-body calculations. The chiral condensate in neutron matter is computed as a function of baryon density. It is found that, once fluctuations are incorporated, the chiral restoration transition for pure neutron matter is shifted to high densities, much beyond three times the density of normal nuclear matter.

Functional renormalization group study of nuclear and neutron matter

A chiral model based on nucleons interacting via boson exchange is investigated. Fluctuation effects are included consistently beyond the mean-field approximation in the framework of the functional renormalization group. The liquid-gas phase transition of symmetric nuclear matter is studied in detail. No sign of a chiral restoration transition is found up to temperatures of about 100 MeV and densities of at least three times the density of normal nuclear matter. Moreover, the model is extended to asymmetric nuclear matter and the constraints from neutron star observations are discussed.

Nuclear thermodynamics from chiral low-momentum interactions

We investigate the thermodynamic equation of state of isospin-symmetric nuclear matter with microscopic nuclear forces derived within the framework of chiral effective field theory. Two- and three-body nuclear interactions constructed at low resolution scales form the basis for a perturbative calculation of the finite-temperature equation of state. The nuclear force models and many-body methods are benchmarked against bulk properties of isospin-symmetric nuclear matter at zero temperature, which are found to be well reproduced when chiral nuclear interactions constructed at the lowest resolution scales are employed. The calculations are then extended to finite temperatures, where we focus on the liquid-gas phase transition and the associated critical point. The Maxwell construction is applied to construct the physical equation of state, and the value of the critical temperature is determined to be T_c =17.2-19.1 MeV, in good agreement with the value extracted from multifragmentation reactions of heavy ions.

Shear viscosity from Kubo formalism: NJL-model study

A large-$N_{\rm c}$ expansion is combined with the Kubo formalism to study the shear viscosity $η$ of strongly interacting matter in the two-flavor NJL model. We discuss analytical and numerical approaches to $η$ and investigate systematically its strong dependence on the spectral width and the momentum-space cutoff. Thermal effects on the constituent quark mass from spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking are included. The ratio $η/s$ and its thermal dependence are derived for different parameterizations of the spectral width and for an explicit one-loop calculation including mesonic modes within the NJL model.

Dense nucleonic matter and the renormalization group

Fluctuations are included in a chiral nucleon-meson model within the framework of the functional renormalization group. The model, with parameters fitted to reproduce the nuclear liquid-gas phase transition, is used to study the phase diagram of QCD. We find good agreement with results from chiral effective field theory. Moreover, the results show a separation of the chemical freeze-out line and chiral symmetry restoration at large baryon chemical potentials.

Thermodynamic phases and mesonic fluctuations in a chiral nucleon-meson model

Studies of the QCD phase diagram must properly include nucleonic degrees of freedom and their thermodynamics in the range of baryon chemical potentials characteristic of nuclear matter. A useful framework for incorporating relevant nuclear physics constraints in this context is a chiral nucleon-meson effective Lagrangian. In the present paper, such a chiral nucleon-meson model is extended with systematic inclusion of mesonic fluctuations using the functional renormalization group approach. The resulting description of the nuclear liquid-gas phase transition shows a remarkable agreement with three-loop calculations based on in-medium chiral effective field theory. No signs of a chiral first-order phase transition and its critical endpoint are found in the region of applicability of the model, at least up to twice the density of normal nuclear matter and at temperatures T<100 MeV. Fluctuations close to the critical point of the first-order liquid-gas transition are also examined with a detailed study of the chiral susceptibility.

Charmonium potentials: Matching perturbative and lattice QCD

Central and spin-spin potentials for charmonium, constructed from Nambu-Bethe-Salpeter amplitudes in lattice simulations of full QCD, are matched with results from perturbative QCD at an appropriate distance scale. This matching is made possible by defining the perturbative potentials through Fourier transforms with a low-momentum cutoff. The central (spin-independent) potential is compared with potentials derived from an expansion in powers of the inverse quark mass. A well-controlled continuation of the charmonium spin-spin potential from lattice QCD to short distances is performed. The mass splittings of the charmonium singlet and triplet states below the open charm threshold, obtained from the matched spin-spin potential, are in good agreement with the experimental values.

Chiral SU(3) theory of antikaon-nucleon interactions with improved threshold constraints

$\bar{K}$-nucleon interactions are investigated in the framework of coupled-channels dynamics based on the next-to-leading order chiral SU(3) meson-baryon effective Lagrangian. A recent determination of the 1s shift and width of kaonic hydrogen enables us to set accurate constraints on the coupled-channels meson-baryon amplitudes in the strangeness $S=-1$ sector. Theoretical uncertainties in the subthreshold extrapolation of the coupled-channels amplitudes are discussed. Using this framework, we give predictions for $K^-$-neutron interactions and for the spectrum of the $Λ(1405)$ resonance. A simplified, effective three-channel model using leading order chiral SU(3) meson-baryon interactions is also constructed for convenient application in $\bar{K}$-nuclear few-body calculations.

Chiral thermodynamics of nuclear matter

The free energy and the equation of state of isospin-asymmetric nuclear matter are calculated at finite temperature up to three loop order in the framework of in-medium chiral perturbation theory, systematically incorporating one- and two-pion exchange dynamics to this order. Effects from the two-pion exchange with explicit Δ-isobar excitation are included, as well as three-body forces. We construct the phase diagram of nuclear matter for different proton fractions x_p and investigate the dependence of nuclear matter properties on the isospin-asymmetry. A detailed study of the liquid-gas phase transition is performed. For isospin-symmetric nuclear matter we find a critical temperature of 15.1 MeV; as the isospin-asymmetry is increased, the liquid-gas coexistence region decreases until it disappears at x_p \approx 0.05, while nuclear matter becomes unbound at x_p \approx 0.12. The quadratic expansion of the free energy in the asymmetry parameter δ is a good approximation at low temperature even for large δ. An estimate of chiral four-body correlations in nuclear and neutron matter is also performed and the corrections from such four-body interactions are found to be small.

Impact of vector-current interactions on the QCD phase diagram

Using a nonlocal version of the Polyakov-loop-extended Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model, we investi- gate effects of a nonderivative vector-current interaction (relating to the quark-number density) at both real and imaginary chemical potentials. This repulsive vector interaction between quarks has the following impact on the chiral first-order phase transition: at imaginary chemical potential it sharpens the transition at the Roberge-Weiss (RW) end point and moves this critical point toward lower temperatures; at real chemical potential, the critical end point moves on a trajectory towards larger chemical potentials and lower temperatures with increasing vector coupling strength. The conditions are discussed at which the first-order phase transition disappears and turns into a smooth crossover.

Nuclear chiral dynamics and phases of QCD

This presentation starts with a brief review of our current picture of QCD phases, derived from lattice QCD thermodynamics and from models based on the symmetries and symmetry breaking patterns of QCD. Typical approaches widely used in this context are the PNJL and chiral quark-meson models. It is pointed out, however, that the modeling of the phase diagram in terms of quarks as quasiparticles misses important and well known nuclear physics constraints. In the hadronic phase of QCD governed by confinement and spontaneously broken chiral symmetry, in-medium chiral effective field theory is the appropriate framework, with pions and nucleons as active degrees of freedom. Nuclear chiral thermodynamics is outlined and the liquid-gas phase transition is described. The density and temperature dependence of the chiral condensate is deduced. As a consequence of two- and three-body correlations in the nuclear medium, no tendency towards a first-order chiral phase transition is found at least up to twice the baryon density of normal nuclear matter and up to temperatures of about 100 MeV. Isospin-asymmetric nuclear matter and neutron matter are also discussed. An outlook is given on new tightened constraints for the equation-of-state of cold and highly compressed matter as implied by a recently observed two-solar-mass neutron star.

Nuclear thermodynamics and the in-medium chiral condensate

The temperature dependence of the chiral condensate in isospin-symmetric nuclear matter at varying baryon density is investigated using thermal in-medium chiral effective field theory. This framework provides a realistic approach to the thermodynamics of the correlated nuclear many-body system and permits calculating systematically the pion-mass dependence of the free energy per particle. One- and two-pion exchange processes, $Δ(1232)$-isobar excitations, Pauli blocking corrections and three-body correlations are treated up to and including three loops in the expansion of the free energy density. It is found that nuclear matter remains in the Nambu-Goldstone phase with spontaneously broken chiral symmetry in the temperature range $T\lesssim 100\,$MeV and at baryon densities at least up to about twice the density of normal nuclear matter, $2ρ_0 \simeq 0.3\, $fm$^{-3}$. Effects of the nuclear liquid-gas phase transition on the chiral condensate at low temperatures are also discussed.

Quark-Hadron Matter at Finite Temperature and Density in a Two-Color PNJL model

Quark-hadron matter at finite temperature and density is studied using a two-flavor, color SU(2) (P)NJL model. The hadronic effective Lagrangian, derived by bosonization of the quark fields and renormalized using the Eguchi method, emerges in the form of an extended linear sigma model with meson and diquark-baryon fields. Chiral and diquark condensates are studied as functions of temperature and baryon density. Masses of mesons and diquark-baryons are calculated with and without the Polyakov loop effect. We investigate the equation of state of quark-hadron matter by taking into account the contributions of mesons and diquark-baryons in addition to the quark quasiparticles.

Role of Vector Interaction and Axial Anomaly in the PNJL Modeling of the QCD Phase Diagram

Effects of a flavor singlet vector interaction in the Polyakov - Nambu - Jona-Lasinio (PNJL) model are studied in combination with the axial U(1) breaking Kobayashi - Maskawa - 't Hooft interaction. Using a consistent cutoff scheme we investigate the QCD phase diagram and its dependence on the vector coupling strength $g_v$. We find that the first order chiral phase transition at moderate baryon chemical potentials and its critical point, a generic feature of most NJL-type models without vector coupling, disappear for sufficiently large values of $g_v$ that are consistent with lattice QCD results at imaginary chemical potential. The influence of non-zero $g_v$ on the curvature of the crossover boundary in the $T-μ$ plane close to $μ= 0$ is also examined.

The shear viscosity of an interacting pion gas is studied using the Kubo formalism as a microscopic description of thermal systems close to global equilibrium. We implement the skeleton expansion in order to approximate the retarded correlator of the viscous part of the energy-momentum tensor. After exploring this in $gϕ^4$ theory we show how the skeleton expansion can be consistently applied to pions in chiral perturbation theory. The shear viscosity $η$ is determined by the spectral width, or equivalently, the mean free path of pions in the heat bath. We derive a new analytical result for the mean free path which is well-conditioned for numerical evaluation and discuss the temperature and pion-mass dependence of the mean free path and the shear viscosity. The ratio $η/s$ of the interacting pion gas exceeds the lower bound $1/4π$ from AdS/CFT correspondence.

Chiral nuclear thermodynamics

We calculate the equation of state of nuclear matter for arbitrary isospin-asymmetry up to three loop order in the free energy density in the framework of in-medium chiral perturbation theory. In our approach 1π- and 2π-exchange dynamics with the inclusion of the Δ-isobar excitation as an explicit degree of freedom, corresponding to the long- and intermediate-range correlations, are treated explicitly. Few contact terms fixed to reproduce selected known properties of nuclear matter encode the short-distance physics. Two-body as well as three-body forces are systematically included. We find a critical temperature of about 15 MeV for symmetric nuclear matter. We investigate the dependence of the liquid-gas first-order phase transition on isospin-asymmetry. In the same chiral framework we calculate the chiral condensate of isospin-symmetric nuclear matter at finite temperatures. The contribution of the Δ-isobar excitation is essential for stabilizing the condensate. As a result, we find no indication of a chiral phase transition for densities ρ\lesssim 2 ρ_0 and at temperatures T \lesssim 100 MeV.

Extensions and further applications of the nonlocal Polyakov--Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model

The nonlocal Polyakov-loop-extended Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (PNJL) model is further improved by including momentum-dependent wave-function renormalization in the quark quasiparticle propagator. Both two- and three-flavor versions of this improved PNJL model are discussed, the latter with inclusion of the (nonlocal) 't Hooft-Kobayashi-Maskawa determinant interaction in order to account for the axial U(1) anomaly. Thermodynamics and phases are investigated and compared with recent lattice-QCD results.

Improved constraints on chiral SU(3) dynamics from kaonic hydrogen

A new improved study of K^- - proton interactions near threshold is performed using coupled-channels dynamics based on the next-to-leading order chiral SU(3) meson-baryon effective Lagrangian. Accurate constraints are now provided by new high-precision kaonic hydrogen measurements. Together with threshold branching ratios and scattering data, these constraints permit an updated analysis of the complex barK N and pi Sigma coupled-channels amplitudes and an improved determination of the K^- p scattering length, including uncertainty estimates.

Mass dependence of the heavy quark potential and its effects on quarkonium states

The heavy quark-antiquark potential is accessible in perturbative QCD and in lattice simulations. The perturbative short-distance part of the potential is contructed via a restricted Fourier transform, covering the momentum region where perturbative QCD is applicable. We show that for the leading order static term as well as for the mass dependent corrections, the perturbative part can be matched at intermediate distances with results from lattice QCD. From these matched potentials, quarkonium spectra with a single free parameter (the heavy quark mass) are derived and compared with empirical spectra. Furthermore, charm and bottom quark masses are deduced.

Nonlocal Polyakov-Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model and imaginary chemical potential

With the aim of setting constraints for the modeling of the QCD phase diagram, the phase structure of the two-flavor Polyakov-loop extended Nambu and Jona-Lasinio (PNJL) model is investigated in the range of imaginary chemical potentials ($μ_\mathrm{I}$) and compared with available $N_f=2$ lattice QCD results. The calculations are performed using the advanced nonlocal version of the PNJL model with the inclusion of vector-type quasiparticle interactions between quarks, and with wave-function-renormalization corrections. It is demonstrated that the nonlocal PNJL model reproduces important features of QCD at finite $μ_\mathrm{I}$, such as the Roberge-Weiss (RW) periodicity and the RW transition. Chiral and deconfinement transition temperatures for $N_f=2$ turn out to coincide both at zero chemical potential and at finite $μ_\mathrm{I}$. Detailed studies are performed concerning the RW endpoint and its neighborhood where a first-order transition occurs.

Quark-antiquark potential to order 1/m and heavy quark masses

An updated heavy quark-antiquark potential is constructed by matching the short-distance perturbative part to long-distance lattice QCD results at an intermediate r scale. The static potential and the order 1/m potential are both analyzed in this way. Effects if order 1/m in charmonium and bottomonium spectra are discussed in comparison. Charm and bottom quark masses are deduced from the spectra and related to the quark masses of other schemes.

Chiral symmetry in strongly interacting matter

This is a brief summary of topics that were presented as lectures within the programme "New Frontiers in QCD 2010" at the Yukawa Institute of Theoretical Physics in Kyoto. The basic subject is phases and symmetry breaking patterns as they emerge from the approximate chiral symmetry of QCD. Part I focuses on the QCD interface with nuclear physics via chiral effective field theory. This includes nuclear thermodynamics and, in particular, constraints for compressed and hot baryonic matter provided by the density and temperature dependence of the chiral condensate. Part II explores aspects of the QCD phase diagram using a non-local improved version of the Polyakov - Nambu - Jona-Lasinio (PNJL) model. A prominent feature of such an approach is the occurence of a dynamical entanglement between chiral and deconfinement crossover transitions. Comparisons with available results from lattice QCD thermodynamics will be made.

Vector mesons at finite temperature and QCD sum rules

Finite energy sum rules for vector and axial-vector currents are derived in a thermal medium to provide constraints for the spectral behavior of rho and a1 mesons at nonvanishing temperature and hence to study the tendency toward chiral symmetry restoration. The parity-mixing ansatz for the rho and a1 spectra, including finite widths, is investigated as a function of temperature. Characteristic differences between vector and axial-vector channels are discussed with regard to the implementation of the chiral-symmetry-breaking scale, 4pi times the pion decay constant, in the sum rule approach.

Symmetries and symmetry breaking patterns in QCD: chiral and deconfinement transitions

The symmetry breaking pattern of QCD features two seemingly disconnected phenomena: the spontaneous breakdown of the Z(3) center symmetry in the deconfinement transition of pure-gauge QCD, and the spontaneous breaking of chiral SU(N_f)xSU(N_f) symmetry in the limit of N_f massless quark flavours. The dynamical entanglement of these symmetries is displayed in the framework of a schematic model (the PNJL model) in comparison with results from Lattice QCD. Extensions to non-zero baryon chemical potential are discussed.

Chiral SU(3) dynamics and the quasibound K^-pp cluster

The prototype of a Kbar nuclear cluster, K^-pp, has been investigated using effective KbarN potentials based on chiral SU(3) dynamics. Variational calculation shows a bound state solution with shallow binding energy B(K^-pp)=20 \pm 3 MeV and broad mesonic decay width Γ(KbarNN -> πY N)=40 - 70 MeV. The KbarN(I=0) pair in the K^-pp system exhibits a similar structure as the Λ(1405). We have also estimated the dispersive correction, p-wave KbarN interaction, and two-nucleon absorption width.

QCD sum rules for rho mesons in vacuum and in-medium, re-examined

An updated investigation of QCD sum rules for the first two moments of rho meson spectral functions, both in vacuum and in-medium, is performed with emphasis on the role of the scale related to spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking in QCD. It is demonstrated that these lowest moments of vector current spectral distributions do permit an accurate sum rule analysis with controlled input including QCD condensates of the lowest dimensions, whereas higher moments are subject to uncertainties from higher dimensional condensates. Possible connections with Brown-Rho scaling are discussed. The factorization approximation for four-quark condensates is shown not to be applicable in any of the cases studied.

Polyakov loop, diquarks and the two-flavour phase diagram

An updated version of the PNJL model is used to study the thermodynamics of N_f = 2 quark flavors interacting through chiral four-point couplings and propagating in a homogeneous Polyakov loop background. Previous PNJL calculations are extended by introducing explicit diquark degrees of freedom and an improved effective potential for the Polyakov loop field. The input is fixed exclusively by selected pure-gauge lattice QCD results and by pion properties in vacuum. The resulting (T, μ) phase diagram is studied with special emphasis on the critical point, its dependence on the quark mass and on Polyakov loop dynamics. We present successful comparisons with lattice QCD thermodynamics expanded to finite chemical potential μ.

Chiral Dynamics in Nuclear Systems

A survey is given on selected topics concerning the role of spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking in low-energy QCD, and its dynamical implications for nuclear systems. This includes aspects of chiral thermodynamics (the temperature and density dependence of the chiral condensate). It also includes an update on the theory of low-energy (s-wave) pion-nuclear interactions relevant for deeply-bound states of pionic atoms and the quest for possible fingerprints of chiral symmetry restoration in nuclear systems.

Coordinate Space Distributions of Antiquark Flavor Asymmetries in the Proton

We examine the space-time properties of the distribution (dbar - ubar) and dbar/ubar in the proton. The difference of the antiquark distributions shows the expected peak at the approximate pion Compton wavelength and is supportative of the thesis that the meson cloud of the nucleon is at the origin of the asymmetry of (dbar - ubar), with the pion cloud playing a dominant role.

J/psi and eta_c in the nuclear medium: QCD sum rule approach

We investigate the masses of the lowest c\bar{c} states, the J/psi and eta_c, in nuclear matter using QCD sum rules. Up to dimension four, the differences between the operator product expansions in vacuum and in medium arise from the density-dependent change in the gluon condensate and from a new contribution proportional to the nucleon expectation value of the twist-2 gluon operator. Both terms together give an attractive shift of about 5-10 MeV to the J/psi and eta_c masses in nuclear matter.
