Effects of order $α^3$ on the determination of the Pauli form factor $F_2$ of the $τ$-lepton

We introduce optimal observables to measure the Pauli form factor $F_2$ of the $τ$-lepton in the pair-production process $e^-e^+ \to τ^- τ^+$ from the intensity distribution of the decay products. The spin-density matrix for the production process is calculated in QED up to order $α^3$ including virtual photon-loops and soft bremsstrahlung, as well the $γZ^0$ interference. We find that the decay channel $(ρ^- ν_τ)\times(ρ^+ \barν_τ)$ yields the best resolution for Re$F_2(s)$ and Im$F_2(s)$ due to its high branching fraction. We also study the bias that is introduced in the determination of $F_2$ , if the production spin-density matrix is taken in tree-level (one-photon exchange) approximation.

Inference of the sound speed and related properties of neutron stars

Information on the phase structure of strongly interacting matter at high baryon densities can be gained from observations of neutron stars and their detailed analysis. In the present work Bayesian inference methods are used to set constraints on the speed of sound in the interior of neutron stars, based on recent multi-messenger data in combination with limiting conditions from nuclear physics at low densities. Two general parametric representations are introduced for the sound speed $c_s$ in order to examine the independence with respect to choices for the parametrisation of Priors. Credible regions for neutron star properties are analysed, in particular with reference to the quest for possible phase transitions in cold dense matter. The evaluation of Bayes factors implies extreme evidence for a violation of the conformal bound, $c_s^2 \leq 1/3$, inside neutron stars. Given the presently existing data base, it can be concluded that the occurrence of a first-order phase transition in the core of even a two-solar-mass neutron star is unlikely, while a continuous crossover cannot be ruled out. At the same time it is pointed out that the discovery of a superheavy neutron star with a mass $ M \sim 2.3 - 2.4\, M_\odot$ would strengthen evidence for a phase change in the deep interior of the star.

Radiative corrections to elastic muon-proton scattering at low momentum transfers

We systematically calculate the radiative corrections of order $α/π$ to elastic muon-proton scattering at low momentum transfers. These include vacuum polarization, photon-loop form factors of the muon and the proton, two-photon exchange corrections and soft photon radiation. In particular, we discuss these corrections for the kinematics of the upcomimg AMBER experiment with a $100\,$GeV muon beam energy. It is found that for the ratio to the Born cross section, only the minor terms from the photon-loop form factors of the proton and two-photon exchange depend on the proton structure predetermined by the strong interactions. Since a prominent role among the radiative corrections is played by soft photon radiation, the calculation of the bremsstrahlung process $μp \toμp γ$ should be extended beyond the soft photon approximation and tailored to the specific experimental conditions.

Hyperon-nuclear interactions from SU(3) chiral effective field theory

The interaction between hyperons and nucleons has a wide range of applications in strangeness nuclear physics and is a topic of continuing great interest. These interactions are not only important for hyperon-nucleon scattering but also essential as basic input to studies of hyperon-nuclear few- and many-body systems including hypernuclei and neutron star matter. We review the systematic derivation and construction of such baryonic forces from the symmetries of quantum chromodynamics within non-relativistic SU(3) chiral effective field theory. Several applications of the resulting potentials are presented for topics of current interest in strangeness nuclear physics.

Hyperon-nucleon three-body forces and strangeness in neutron stars

Three-body forces acting on a $Λ$ hyperon in a nuclear medium are investigated, with special focus on the so-called hyperon puzzle in neutron stars. The hyperon-nucleon two-body interaction deduced from SU(3) chiral effective field theory is employed at next-to-leading order. Hyperon-nucleon three-body forces are approximated using saturation by decuplet baryons and are transcribed to density-dependent effective two-body interactions. These together are taken as input in a Brueckner-Bethe-Goldstone equation with explicit treatment of the $ΛN\leftrightarrowΣN$ and $ΛNN\leftrightarrowΣNN$ coupled channels. Single-particle potentials of a $Λ$ hyperon in symmetric nuclear matter and neutron matter are calculated. With parameters of the $ΛNN$ three-body force constrained by hypernuclear phenomenology, extrapolations to high baryon density are performed. By comparison of the $Λ$ and neutron chemical potentials at densities characteristic of the core of neutron stars it is found that the combined repulsive effects of two- and three-body correlations makes the appearance of $Λ$ hyperons in neutron stars energetically unfavourable, thus offering a possible solution to a longstanding question.

Implementing chiral three-body forces in terms of medium-dependent two-body forces

Three-nucleon (3N) forces are an indispensable ingredient for accurate few-body and many-body nuclear structure and reaction theory calculations. While the direct implementation of chiral 3N forces can be technically very challenging, a simpler approach is given by employing instead a medium-dependent NN interaction V_med that reflects the physics of three-body forces at the two-body normal-ordered approximation. We review the derivation and construction of V_med from the chiral 3N interaction at next-to-next-to-leading order (N2LO), consisting of a long-range $2π$-exchange term, a mid-range $1π$-exchange component and a short-range contact term. Several applications of V_med to the equation of state of cold nuclear and neutron matter, the nucleon single-particle potential in nuclear matter, and the nuclear quasiparticle interaction are discussed. We also explore differences in using local vs. nonlocal regulating functions on 3N forces and make direct comparisons to exact results at low order in perturbation theory expansions for the equation of state and single-particle potential. We end with a discussion and numerical calculation of the in-medium NN potential V_med from the next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N3LO) chiral 3N force, which consists of a series of long-range and short-range terms.

Nucleon-Nucleon Scattering with Coupled Nucleon-Delta Channels in Chiral Effective Field Theory

In this work the elastic scattering of two nucleons is calculated in chiral effective field theory at next-to-leading order taking into account the coupled N$Δ$-, $Δ$N- and $ΔΔ$-channels. To solve the coupled channel scattering equation one needs as input the potentials for all combinations of these initial and final states. Up to next-to leading order these (transition) potentials arise from one-pion exchange, two-pion exchange and contact interactions. For the two-pion exchange we give analytic expressions for the spectral functions derived from all contributing one-loop diagrams. The forms of the contact potentials at leading and next-to-leading order are determined. We perform a fit of the low energy constants, that belong to the $NN \rightarrow NN$ contact potential and contribute up to next-to-leading order to $S$- and $P$-waves of NN scattering only. The influence of the $Δ$-isobar dynamics entering through the coupled channels is studied in detail.

Density-dependent effective baryon-baryon interaction from chiral three-baryon forces

A density-dependent effective potential for the baryon-baryon interaction in the presence of the (hyper)nuclear medium is constructed, based on the leading (irreducible) three-baryon forces derived within SU(3) chiral effective field theory. We evaluate the contributions from three classes: contact terms, one-pion exchange and two-pion exchange. In the strangeness-zero sector we recover the known result for the in-medium nucleon-nucleon interaction. Explicit expressions for the Lambda-nucleon in-medium potential in (asymmetric) nuclear matter are presented. Our results are suitable for implementation into calculations of (hyper)nuclear matter. In order to estimate the low-energy constants of the leading three-baryon forces we introduce the decuplet baryons as explicit degrees of freedom and construct the relevant terms in the minimal non-relativistic Lagrangian. With these, the constants are estimated through decuplet saturation. Utilizing this approximation we provide numerical results for the effect of the three-body force in symmetric nuclear matter and pure neutron matter on the Lambda-nucleon interaction. A moderate repulsion that increases with density is found in comparison to the free Lambda-nucleon interaction.

Divergence of the isospin-asymmetry expansion of the nuclear equation of state in many-body perturbation theory

The isospin-asymmetry dependence of the nuclear matter equation of state obtained from microscopic chiral two- and three-body interactions in second-order many-body perturbation theory is examined in detail. The quadratic, quartic and sextic coefficients in the Maclaurin expansion of the free energy per particle of infinite homogeneous nuclear matter with respect to the isospin asymmetry are extracted numerically using finite differences, and the resulting polynomial isospin-asymmetry parametrizations are compared to the full isospin-asymmetry dependence of the free energy. It is found that in the low-temperature and high-density regime where the radius of convergence of the expansion is generically zero, the inclusion of higher-order terms beyond the leading quadratic approximation leads overall to a significantly poorer description of the isospin-asymmetry dependence. In contrast, at high temperatures and densities well below nuclear saturation density, the interaction contributions to the higher-order coefficients are negligible and the deviations from the quadratic approximation are predominantly from the noninteracting term in the many-body perturbation series. Furthermore, we extract the leading logarithmic term in the isospin-asymmetry expansion of the equation of state at zero temperature from the analysis of linear combinations of finite differences. It is shown that the logarithmic term leads to a considerably improved description of the isospin-asymmetry dependence at zero temperature.

Leading three-baryon forces from SU(3) chiral effective field theory

Leading three-baryon forces are derived within SU(3) chiral effective field theory. Three classes of irreducible diagrams contribute: three-baryon contact terms, one-meson exchange and two-meson exchange diagrams. We provide the minimal non-relativistic terms of the chiral Lagrangian, that contribute to these diagrams. SU(3) relations are given for the strangeness S=0 and -1 sectors. In the strangeness-zero sector we recover the well-known three-nucleon forces from chiral effective field theory. Explicit expressions for the lambda-nucleon-nucleon chiral potential in isospin space are presented.

Thermodynamics of isospin-asymmetric nuclear matter from chiral effective field theory

The density and temperature dependence of the nuclear symmetry free energy is investigated using microscopic two- and three-body nuclear potentials constructed from chiral effective field theory. The nuclear force models and many-body methods are benchmarked to properties of isospin-symmetric nuclear matter in the vicinity of the saturation density as well as the virial expansion of the neutron matter equation of state at low fugacities. The free energy per particle of isospin-asymmetric nuclear matter is calculated assuming a quadratic dependence of the interaction contributions on the isospin asymmetry. The spinodal instability at subnuclear densities is examined in detail.

Shear Viscosities from Kubo Formalism in a large-$N_{\rm c}$ Nambu--Jona-Lasinio Model

In this work the shear viscosity of strongly interacting matter is calculated within a two-flavor Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model as a function of temperature and chemical potential. The general Kubo formula is applied, incorporating the full Dirac structure of the thermal quark spectral function and avoiding commonly used on-shell approximations. Mesonic fluctuations contributing via Fock diagrams provide the dominant dissipative processes. The resulting ratio $η/s$ (shear viscosity over entropy density) decreases with temperature and chemical potential. Interpolating between our NJL results at low temperatures and hard-thermal-loop results at high temperatures a minimum slightly above the AdS/CFT benchmark $η/s=1/4π$ is obtained.

Alpha-clustered hypernuclei and chiral SU(3) dynamics

Light hypernuclei with an $α$ cluster substructure of the core nucleus are studied using an accurate cluster approach (the Hyper-THSR wave function) in combination with a density-dependent $Λ$ hyperon-nuclear interaction derived from chiral SU(3) effective field theory. This interaction includes important two-pion exchange processes involving $ΣN$ intermediate states and associated three-body mechanisms as well as effective mass and surface terms arising in a derivative expansion of the in-medium $Λ$ self-energy. Applications and calculated results are presented and discussed for $_Λ^9$Be and $^{13}_Λ$C. Furthermore, the result of the lightest $α$ clustered hypernucleus, $^5_Λ$He using realistic $ab initio$ four nucleon density is shown.

Nuclear thermodynamics from chiral low-momentum interactions

We investigate the thermodynamic equation of state of isospin-symmetric nuclear matter with microscopic nuclear forces derived within the framework of chiral effective field theory. Two- and three-body nuclear interactions constructed at low resolution scales form the basis for a perturbative calculation of the finite-temperature equation of state. The nuclear force models and many-body methods are benchmarked against bulk properties of isospin-symmetric nuclear matter at zero temperature, which are found to be well reproduced when chiral nuclear interactions constructed at the lowest resolution scales are employed. The calculations are then extended to finite temperatures, where we focus on the liquid-gas phase transition and the associated critical point. The Maxwell construction is applied to construct the physical equation of state, and the value of the critical temperature is determined to be T_c =17.2-19.1 MeV, in good agreement with the value extracted from multifragmentation reactions of heavy ions.

Relativistic SU(3) chiral baryon-baryon Lagrangian up to order q^2

We construct the most general chiral effective Lagrangian for baryon-baryon contact interactions in flavor SU(3) up to order q^2 using a covariant power counting. A subset of these contact terms contributes to the baryon-baryon potential in chiral effective field theory. The Lorentz invariant effective Lagrangian is constructed to fulfill the invariance under charge conjugation, parity transformation, Hermitian conjugation and the local chiral symmetry group SU(3)_L x SU(3)_R. Goldstone bosons and external fields are included as well, thus providing additional four-baryon contact vertices involving e.g. pseudoscalar mesons and/or photons. In order to eliminate the linearly dependent terms, we use the Fierz identities, the equations of motion, and a Cayley-Hamilton relation for SU(3). As an application the baryon-baryon scattering contact potentials in low partial waves are considered.

Single-particle potential from resummed ladder diagrams

A recent work on the resummation of fermionic in-medium ladder diagrams to all orders is extended by calculating the complex single-particle potential $U(p,k_f)+ i\,W(p,k_f)$ for momenta $p<k_f$ as well as $p>k_f$. The on-shell single-particle potential is constructed by means of a complex-valued in-medium loop that includes corrections from a test-particle of momentum $\vec p$ added to the filled Fermi sea. The single-particle potential $U(k_f,k_f)$ at the Fermi surface as obtained from the resummation of the combined particle and hole ladder diagrams is shown to satisfy the Hugenholtz-Van-Hove theorem. The perturbative contributions at various orders $a^n$ in the scattering length are deduced and checked against the known analytical results at order $a^1$ and $a^2$. The limit $a\to\infty$ is studied as a special case and a strong momentum dependence of the real (and imaginary) single-particle potential is found. This indicates an instability against a phase transition to a state with an empty shell inside the Fermi sphere such that the density gets reduced by about 5%. For comparison, the same analysis is performed for the resummed particle-particle ladder diagrams alone. In this truncation an instability for hole-excitations near the Fermi surface is found at strong coupling. For the set of particle-hole ring diagrams the single-particle potential is calculated as well. Furthermore, the resummation of in-medium ladder diagrams to all orders is studied for a two-dimensional Fermi gas with a short-range two-body contact-interaction.

Charmonium potentials: Matching perturbative and lattice QCD

Central and spin-spin potentials for charmonium, constructed from Nambu-Bethe-Salpeter amplitudes in lattice simulations of full QCD, are matched with results from perturbative QCD at an appropriate distance scale. This matching is made possible by defining the perturbative potentials through Fourier transforms with a low-momentum cutoff. The central (spin-independent) potential is compared with potentials derived from an expansion in powers of the inverse quark mass. A well-controlled continuation of the charmonium spin-spin potential from lattice QCD to short distances is performed. The mass splittings of the charmonium singlet and triplet states below the open charm threshold, obtained from the matched spin-spin potential, are in good agreement with the experimental values.

Chiral thermodynamics of nuclear matter

The free energy and the equation of state of isospin-asymmetric nuclear matter are calculated at finite temperature up to three loop order in the framework of in-medium chiral perturbation theory, systematically incorporating one- and two-pion exchange dynamics to this order. Effects from the two-pion exchange with explicit Δ-isobar excitation are included, as well as three-body forces. We construct the phase diagram of nuclear matter for different proton fractions x_p and investigate the dependence of nuclear matter properties on the isospin-asymmetry. A detailed study of the liquid-gas phase transition is performed. For isospin-symmetric nuclear matter we find a critical temperature of 15.1 MeV; as the isospin-asymmetry is increased, the liquid-gas coexistence region decreases until it disappears at x_p \approx 0.05, while nuclear matter becomes unbound at x_p \approx 0.12. The quadratic expansion of the free energy in the asymmetry parameter δ is a good approximation at low temperature even for large δ. An estimate of chiral four-body correlations in nuclear and neutron matter is also performed and the corrections from such four-body interactions are found to be small.

Nuclear thermodynamics and the in-medium chiral condensate

The temperature dependence of the chiral condensate in isospin-symmetric nuclear matter at varying baryon density is investigated using thermal in-medium chiral effective field theory. This framework provides a realistic approach to the thermodynamics of the correlated nuclear many-body system and permits calculating systematically the pion-mass dependence of the free energy per particle. One- and two-pion exchange processes, $Δ(1232)$-isobar excitations, Pauli blocking corrections and three-body correlations are treated up to and including three loops in the expansion of the free energy density. It is found that nuclear matter remains in the Nambu-Goldstone phase with spontaneously broken chiral symmetry in the temperature range $T\lesssim 100\,$MeV and at baryon densities at least up to about twice the density of normal nuclear matter, $2ρ_0 \simeq 0.3\, $fm$^{-3}$. Effects of the nuclear liquid-gas phase transition on the chiral condensate at low temperatures are also discussed.

Shear Viscosity of a Hot Pion Gas

The shear viscosity of an interacting pion gas is studied using the Kubo formalism as a microscopic description of thermal systems close to global equilibrium. We implement the skeleton expansion in order to approximate the retarded correlator of the viscous part of the energy-momentum tensor. After exploring this in $gϕ^4$ theory we show how the skeleton expansion can be consistently applied to pions in chiral perturbation theory. The shear viscosity $η$ is determined by the spectral width, or equivalently, the mean free path of pions in the heat bath. We derive a new analytical result for the mean free path which is well-conditioned for numerical evaluation and discuss the temperature and pion-mass dependence of the mean free path and the shear viscosity. The ratio $η/s$ of the interacting pion gas exceeds the lower bound $1/4π$ from AdS/CFT correspondence.

Chiral nuclear thermodynamics

We calculate the equation of state of nuclear matter for arbitrary isospin-asymmetry up to three loop order in the free energy density in the framework of in-medium chiral perturbation theory. In our approach 1π- and 2π-exchange dynamics with the inclusion of the Δ-isobar excitation as an explicit degree of freedom, corresponding to the long- and intermediate-range correlations, are treated explicitly. Few contact terms fixed to reproduce selected known properties of nuclear matter encode the short-distance physics. Two-body as well as three-body forces are systematically included. We find a critical temperature of about 15 MeV for symmetric nuclear matter. We investigate the dependence of the liquid-gas first-order phase transition on isospin-asymmetry. In the same chiral framework we calculate the chiral condensate of isospin-symmetric nuclear matter at finite temperatures. The contribution of the Δ-isobar excitation is essential for stabilizing the condensate. As a result, we find no indication of a chiral phase transition for densities ρ\lesssim 2 ρ_0 and at temperatures T \lesssim 100 MeV.

Mass dependence of the heavy quark potential and its effects on quarkonium states

The heavy quark-antiquark potential is accessible in perturbative QCD and in lattice simulations. The perturbative short-distance part of the potential is contructed via a restricted Fourier transform, covering the momentum region where perturbative QCD is applicable. We show that for the leading order static term as well as for the mass dependent corrections, the perturbative part can be matched at intermediate distances with results from lattice QCD. From these matched potentials, quarkonium spectra with a single free parameter (the heavy quark mass) are derived and compared with empirical spectra. Furthermore, charm and bottom quark masses are deduced.

Quark-antiquark potential to order 1/m and heavy quark masses

An updated heavy quark-antiquark potential is constructed by matching the short-distance perturbative part to long-distance lattice QCD results at an intermediate r scale. The static potential and the order 1/m potential are both analyzed in this way. Effects if order 1/m in charmonium and bottomonium spectra are discussed in comparison. Charm and bottom quark masses are deduced from the spectra and related to the quark masses of other schemes.

Consistent Calculation of the Nucleon Electromagnetic Polarizabilities in Chiral Perturbation Theory Beyond Next-to-Leading Order

We calculate the nucleons' electromagnetic polarizabilities in heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory including all terms to order ${\cal O} (q^4)$. The chiral prediction of the electric polarizabilities for the neutron and the proton are in good agreement with the data. In the case of the magnetic polarizabilities the big positive contribution from the $Δ(1232)$ resonance is largely cancelled by a non--analytic loop contribution of the $\ln M_π$ type. This novel effect helps to understand the rather small empirical value of the nucleons' magnetic polarizability.

Critical Analysis of Baryon Masses and Sigma-Terms in Heavy Baryon Chiral Perturbation Theory

We present an analysis of the octet baryon masses and the $πN$ and $KN$ $σ$--terms in the framework of heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory. At next-to-leading order, ${\cal O}(q^3)$, knowledge of the baryon masses and $σ_{πN}(0)$ allows to determine the three corresponding finite low--energy constants and to predict the the two $KN$ $σ$--terms $σ^{(1,2)}_{KN} (0)$. We also include the spin-3/2 decuplet in the effective theory. The presence of the non--vanishing energy scale due to the octet--decuplet splitting shifts the average octet baryon mass by an infinite amount and leads to infinite renormalizations of the low--energy constants. The first observable effect of the decuplet intermediate states to the baryon masses starts out at order $q^4$. We argue that it is not sufficient to retain only these but no other higher order terms to achieve a consistent description of the three--flavor scalar sector of baryon CHPT. In addition, we critically discuss an SU(2) result which allows to explain the large shift of $σ_{πN}(2M_π^2) - σ_{πN}(0)$ via intermediate $Δ(1232)$ states.

Small Momentum Evolution of the Extended Drell--Hearn--Gerasimov Sum Rule

We investigate the momentum dependence of the extended Drell-Hearn-Gerasimov sum rule. An economical formalism is developed which allows to express the extended DHG sum rule in terms of a single virtual Compton amplitude in forward direction. Rigorous results for the small momentum evolution are derived from chiral perturbation theory within the one-loop approximation. Furthermore, we evaluate some higher order contributions arising from $Δ(1232)$ intermediate states and relativistic corrections. (2 figures available upon request).
