Efficient Optimization-based Cable Force Allocation for Geometric Control of a Multirotor Team Transporting a Payload

We consider transporting a heavy payload that is attached to multiple multirotors. The current state-of-the-art controllers either do not avoid inter-robot collision at all, leading to crashes when tasked with carrying payloads that are small in size compared to the cable lengths, or use computational demanding nonlinear optimization. We propose an efficient optimization-based cable force allocation for a geometric payload transport controller to effectively avoid such collisions, while retaining the stability properties of the geometric controller. Our approach introduces a cascade of carefully designed quadratic programs that can be solved efficiently on highly constrained embedded flight controllers. We show that our approach exceeds the state-of-the-art controllers in terms of scalability by at least an order of magnitude for up to 10 robots. We demonstrate our method on challenging scenarios with up to three small multirotors with various payloads and cable lengths, where our controller runs in realtime directly on a microcontroller on the robots.

RLSS: Real-time Multi-Robot Trajectory Replanning using Linear Spatial Separations

Trajectory replanning is a critical problem for multi-robot teams navigating dynamic environments. We present RLSS (Replanning using Linear Spatial Separations): a real-time trajectory replanning algorithm for cooperative multi-robot teams that uses linear spatial separations to enforce safety. Our algorithm handles the dynamic limits of the robots explicitly, is completely distributed, and is robust to environment changes, robot failures, and trajectory tracking errors. It requires no communication between robots and relies instead on local relative measurements only. We demonstrate that the algorithm works in real-time both in simulations and in experiments using physical robots. We compare our algorithm to a state-of-the-art online trajectory generation algorithm based on model predictive control, and show that our algorithm results in significantly fewer collisions in highly constrained environments, and effectively avoids deadlocks.

Neural-Swarm: Decentralized Close-Proximity Multirotor Control Using Learned Interactions

In this paper, we present Neural-Swarm, a nonlinear decentralized stable controller for close-proximity flight of multirotor swarms. Close-proximity control is challenging due to the complex aerodynamic interaction effects between multirotors, such as downwash from higher vehicles to lower ones. Conventional methods often fail to properly capture these interaction effects, resulting in controllers that must maintain large safety distances between vehicles, and thus are not capable of close-proximity flight. Our approach combines a nominal dynamics model with a regularized permutation-invariant Deep Neural Network (DNN) that accurately learns the high-order multi-vehicle interactions. We design a stable nonlinear tracking controller using the learned model. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed controller significantly outperforms a baseline nonlinear tracking controller with up to four times smaller worst-case height tracking errors. We also empirically demonstrate the ability of our learned model to generalize to larger swarm sizes.
