Equivariant K-theory and tangent spaces to Schubert varieties

Tangent spaces to Schubert varieties of type A were characterized by Lakshmibai and Seshadri. This result was extended to the other classical types by Lakshmibai. We give a uniform characterization of tangent spaces to Schubert varieties in cominuscule G/P. Our results extend beyond cominuscule G/P; they describe the tangent space to any Schubert variety in G/B at a point xB, where x is a cominuscule Weyl group element in the sense of Peterson. Our results also give partial information about the tangent space to any Schubert variety at any point. Our method is to describe the tangent spaces of Kazhdan-Lusztig varieties, and then recover results for Schubert varieties. Our proof uses a relationship between weights of the tangent space of a variety with torus action, and factors of the class of the variety in torus equivariant K-theory. The proof relies on a formula for Schubert classes in equivariant K-theory due to Graham and Willems, as well as a theorem on subword complexes due to Knutson and Miller.

Tangent spaces and T-invariant curves of Schubert varieties

The set of T-invariant curves in a Schubert variety through a T-fixed point is relatively easy to characterize in terms of its weights, but the tangent space is more difficult. We prove that the weights of the tangent space are contained in the rational cone generated by the weights of the T-invariant curves. In simply laced types, this remains true if "rational" is replaced by "integral". We also obtain conditions under which every weight of the tangent space is the weight of a T-invariant curve, as well as a smoothness criterion. The results rely on equivariant K-theory, as well as the study of different notions of decomposability of roots.

A new approach to the generalized Springer correspondence

The Springer resolution of the nilpotent cone is used to give a geometric construction of the irreducible representations of Weyl groups. Borho and MacPherson obtain the Springer correspondence by applying the decomposition theorem to the Springer resolution, establishing an injective map from the set of irreducible Weyl group representations to simple equivariant perverse sheaves on the nilpotent cone. In this manuscript, we consider a generalization of the Springer resolution using a variety defined by the first author. Our main result shows that in the type A case, applying the decomposition theorem to this map yields all simple perverse sheaves on the nilpotent cone with multiplicity as predicted by Lusztig's generalized Springer correspondence.

Cominuscule points and Schubert varieties

We introduce the notion of a cominuscule point in a Schubert variety in a generalized flag variety for a semisimple group. We derive formulas expressing the Hilbert series and multiplicity of a Schubert variety at a cominuscule point in terms of the restrictions of classes in torus-equivariant K-theory and cohomology to that point, generalizing previously known formulas for flag varieties of cominuscule type. Thus, we can calculate Hilbert series and multiplicities in cases where these were previously unknown. The formulas for Schubert varieties are special cases of more general formulas valid at generalized cominuscule points of schemes with torus actions.

Excited Young diagrams, equivariant K-theory, and Schubert varieties

We give combinatorial descriptions of the restrictions to T-fixed points of the classes of structure sheaves of Schubert varieties in the T-equivariant K-theory of Grassmannians and of maximal isotropic Grassmannians of orthogonal and symplectic types. We also give formulas, based on these descriptions, for the Hilbert series and Hilbert polynomials at T-fixed points of the corresponding Schubert varieties. These descriptions and formulas are given in terms of two equivalent combinatorial models: excited Young diagrams and set-valued tableaux. The restriction fomulas are positive, in that for a Schubert variety of codimension d, the formula equals (-1)^d times a sum, with nonnegative coefficients, of monomials in the expressions (e^{-α}-1), as αruns over the positive roots. In types A_n and C_n the restriction formulas had been proved earlier by [Kreiman 05], [Kreiman 06] by a different method. In type A_n, the formula for the Hilbert series had been proved earlier by [Li-Yong 12]. The method of this paper, which relies on a restriction formula of [Graham 02] and [Willems 06], is based on the method used by [Ikeda-Naruse 09] to obtain the analogous formulas in equivariant cohomology. The formulas we give differ from the K-theoretic restriction formulas given by [Ikeda-Naruse 11], which use different versions of excited Young diagrams and set-valued tableaux. We also give Hilbert series and Hilbert polynomial formulas which are valid for Schubert varieties in any cominuscule flag variety, in terms of the 0-Hecke algebra.

The relative Hochschild-Serre spectral sequence and the Belkale-Kumar product

We consider the Belkale-Kumar cup product $\odot_t$ on $H^*(G/P)$ for a generalized flag variety $G/P$ with parameter $t \in \C^m$, where $m=\dim(H^2(G/P))$. For each $t\in \C^m$, we define an associated parabolic subgroup $P_K \supset P$. We show that the ring $(H^*(G/P), \odot_t)$ contains a graded subalgebra $A$ isomorphic to $H^*(P_K/P)$ with the usual cup product, where $P_K$ is a parabolic subgroup associated to the parameter $t$. Further, we prove that $(H^*(G/P_K), \odot_0)$ is the quotient of the ring $(H^*(G/P), \odot_t)$ with respect to the ideal generated by elements of positive degree of $A$. We prove the above results by using basic facts about the Hochschild-Serre spectral sequence for relative Lie algebra cohomology, and most of the paper consists of proving these facts using the original approach of Hochschild and Serre.

The Belkale-Kumar cup product and relative Lie algebra cohomology

We study the Belkale-Kumar family of cup products on the cohomology of a generalized flag variety. We give an alternative construction of the family using relative Lie algebra cohomology, and in particular, identify the Belkale-Kumar cup product with a relative Lie algebra cohomology ring for every value of the parameter. As a consequence, we extend a fundamental disjointness result of Kostant to a family of Lie algebras. In an appendix, written jointly with Edward Richmond, we extend a Levi movability result of Belkale and Kumar to arbitrary parameters.

Riemann-Roch for quotients and Todd classes of simplicial toric varieties

In this paper we give an explicit formula for the Riemann-Roch map for singular schemes which are quotients of smooth schemes by diagonalizable groups. As an application we obtain a simple proof of a formula for the Todd class of a simplicial toric variety. An equivariant version of this formula was previously obtained for complete simplicial toric varieties by Brion and Vergne using different techniques.

Riemann-Roch for equivariant Chow groups

The purpose of this paper is to prove an equivariant Riemann-Roch theorem for schemes or algebraic spaces with an action of a linear algebraic group $G$. For a $G$-space $X$, this theorem gives an isomorphism between a completion of the equivariant Grothendieck group and a completion of equivariant equivariant Chow groups. The key to proving this isomorphism is a geometric description of completions of the equivariant Grothendieck group. Besides Riemann-Roch, this result has some purely $K$-theoretic applications. In particular, we prove a conjecture of Köck (in the case of regular schemes) and extend to arbitrary characteristic a result of Segal on representation rings.
