Cyclically presented groups with length four positive relators

For cyclically presented groups $G = G_n(w)$ with positive length four relators $w = x_0x_jx_kx_l$ in the free group with basis $x_0, x_1, \ldots, x_{n-1}$, we classify finiteness and, modulo two unresolved cases, we classify asphericity for the underlying presentations. We show that the fixed point subgroup of the shift $x_i \mapsto x_{i+1}$ is always finite and we relate finiteness of $G$ and asphericity to the dynamics of the shift action by the cyclic group of order $n$ on the nonidentity elements of $G$.

Efficient Finite Groups Arising in the Study of Relative Asphericity

We study a class of two-generator two-relator groups, denoted $J_n(m,k)$, that arise in the study of relative asphericity as groups satisfying a transitional curvature condition. Particular instances of these groups occur in the literature as finite groups of intriguing orders. Here we find infinite families of non-elementary virtually free groups and of finite metabelian non-nilpotent groups, for which we determine the orders. All Mersenne primes arise as factors of the orders of the non-metacyclic groups in the class, as do all primes from other conjecturally infinite families of primes. We classify the finite groups up to isomorphism and show that our class overlaps and extends a class of groups $F^{a,b,c}$ with trivalent Cayley graphs that was introduced by C.M.Campbell, H.S.M.Coxeter, and E.F.Robertson. The theory of cyclically presented groups informs our methods and we extend part of this theory (namely, on connections with polynomial resultants) to "bicyclically presented groups" that arise naturally in our analysis. As a corollary to our main results we obtain new infinite families of finite metacyclic generalized Fibonacci groups.

On Shift Dynamics For Cyclically Presented Groups

For group presentations with cyclic symmetry, there is a connection between asphericity and the dynamics of the shift automorphism. For the class of groups $G_n(k,l)$ described by the cyclic presentations $\mathcal{P}_n(k,l) = (x_i:x_ix_{i+k}x_{i+l}\ (i \mod n))$ and studied extensively by G. Williams and M. Edjvet \cite{EdjvetWilliams}, the shift acts freely on the nonidentity elements of $G_n(k,l)$ if and only if the presentation $\mathcal{P}_n(k,l)$ is combinatorially aspherical in the sense of \cite{CCH}. The shift has a nonidentity fixed point precisely when $G_n(k,l)$ is finite.
