Fractional Fibonacci groups with an odd number of generators

The Fibonacci groups $F(n)$ are known to exhibit significantly different behaviour depending on the parity of $n$. We extend known results for $F(n)$ for odd $n$ to the family of Fractional Fibonacci groups $F^{k/l}(n)$. We show that for odd $n$ the group $F^{k/l}(n)$ is not the fundamental group of an orientable hyperbolic 3-orbifold of finite volume. We obtain results concerning the existence of torsion in the groups $F^{k/l}(n)$ (where $n$ is odd) paying particular attention to the groups $F^k(n)$ and $F^{k/l}(3)$, and observe consequences concerning asphericity of relative presentations of their shift extensions. We show that if $F^{k}(n)$ (where $n$ is odd) and $F^{k/l}(3)$ are non-cyclic 3-manifold groups then they are isomorphic to the direct product of the quaternion group $Q_8$ and a finite cyclic group.

A class of digraph groups defined by balanced presentations

We consider groups defined by non-empty balanced presentations with the property that each relator is of the form R(x,y), where x and y are distinct generators and R(.,.) is determined by some fixed cyclically reduced word R(a,b) that involves both a and b. To every such presentation we associate a directed graph whose vertices correspond to the generators and whose arcs correspond to the relators. Under the hypothesis that the girth of the underlying undirected graph is at least 4, we show that the resulting groups are non-trivial and cannot be finite of rank 3 or higher. Without the hypothesis on the girth it is well known that both the trivial group and finite groups of rank 3 can arise.

Planar Whitehead graphs with cyclic symmetry arising from the study of Dunwoody manifolds

A fundamental theorem in the study of Dunwoody manifolds is a classification of finite graphs on $2n$ vertices that satisfy seven conditions (concerning planarity, regularity, and a cyclic automorphism of order $n$). Its significance is that if the presentation complex of a cyclic presentation is a spine of a 3-manifold then its Whitehead graph satisfies the first five conditions (the remaining conditions do not necessarily hold). In this paper we observe that this classification relies implicitly on an unstated, and unnecessary, 8th condition and that this condition is not necessary for such a presentation complex to be the spine of a 3-manifold. We expand the scope of Dunwoody's classification by classifying all graphs that satisfy the first five conditions.

Coherence, subgroup separability, and metacyclic structures for a class of cyclically presented groups

We study a class $\mathfrak{M}$ of cyclically presented groups that includes both finite and infinite groups and is defined by a certain combinatorial condition on the defining relations. This class includes many finite metacyclic generalized Fibonacci groups that have been previously identified in the literature. By analysing their shift extensions we show that the groups in the class $\mathfrak{M}$ are are coherent, subgroup separable, satisfy the Tits alternative, possess finite index subgroups of geometric dimension at most two, and that their finite subgroups are all metacyclic. Many of the groups in $\mathfrak{M}$ are virtually free, some are free products of metacyclic groups and free groups, and some have geometric dimension two. We classify the finite groups that occur in $\mathfrak{M}$, giving extensive details about the metacyclic structures that occur, and we use this to prove an earlier conjecture concerning cyclically presented groups in which the relators are positive words of length three. We show that any finite group in the class $\mathfrak{M}$ that has fixed point free shift automorphism must be cyclic.

Efficient Finite Groups Arising in the Study of Relative Asphericity

We study a class of two-generator two-relator groups, denoted $J_n(m,k)$, that arise in the study of relative asphericity as groups satisfying a transitional curvature condition. Particular instances of these groups occur in the literature as finite groups of intriguing orders. Here we find infinite families of non-elementary virtually free groups and of finite metabelian non-nilpotent groups, for which we determine the orders. All Mersenne primes arise as factors of the orders of the non-metacyclic groups in the class, as do all primes from other conjecturally infinite families of primes. We classify the finite groups up to isomorphism and show that our class overlaps and extends a class of groups $F^{a,b,c}$ with trivalent Cayley graphs that was introduced by C.M.Campbell, H.S.M.Coxeter, and E.F.Robertson. The theory of cyclically presented groups informs our methods and we extend part of this theory (namely, on connections with polynomial resultants) to "bicyclically presented groups" that arise naturally in our analysis. As a corollary to our main results we obtain new infinite families of finite metacyclic generalized Fibonacci groups.

Fibonacci type presentations and 3-manifolds

We study the cyclic presentations with relators of the form $x_ix_{i+m}x_{i+k}^{-1}$ and the groups they define. These "groups of Fibonacci type" were introduced by Johnson and Mawdesley and they generalize the Fibonacci groups $F(2,n)$ and the Sieradski groups $S(2,n)$. With the exception of two groups, we classify when these groups are fundamental groups of 3-manifolds, and it turns out that only Fibonacci, Sieradski, and cyclic groups arise. Using this classification, we completely classify the presentations that are spines of 3-manifolds, answering a question of Cavicchioli, Hegenbarth, and Repovš. When $n$ is even the groups $F(2,n),S(2,n)$ admit alternative cyclic presentations on $n/2$ generators. We show that these alternative presentations also arise as spines of 3-manifolds.

Tadpole Labelled Oriented Graph Groups and Cyclically Presented Groups

We study a class of Labelled Oriented Graph (LOG) group where the underlying graph is a tadpole graph. We show that such a group is the natural HNN extension of a cyclically presented group and investigate the relationship between the LOG group and the cyclically presented group. We relate the second homotopy groups of their presentations and show that hyperbolicity of the cyclically presented group implies solvability of the conjugacy problem for the LOG group. In the case where the label on the tail of the LOG spells a positive word in the vertices in the circuit we show that the LOGs and groups coincide with those considered by Szczepanski and Vesnin. We obtain new presentations for these cyclically presented groups and show that the groups of Fibonacci type introduced by Johnson and Mawdesley are of this form. These groups generalize the Fibonacci groups and the Sieradski groups and have been studied by various authors. We continue these investigations, using small cancellation and curvature methods to obtain results on hyperbolicity, automaticity, SQ-universality, and solvability of decision problems.

The Tits alternative for generalized triangle groups of type (3,4,2)

A generalized triangle group is a group that can be presented in the form $G = < x,y | x^p=y^q=w(x,y)^r=1>$, where $p,q,r\geq 2$ and $w(x,y)$ is a cyclically reduced word of length at least 2 in the free product $\Z_p*\Z_q=< x,y | x^p=y^q=1>$. Rosenberger has conjectured that every generalized triangle group $G$ satisfies the Tits alternative. It is known that the conjecture holds except possibly when the triple $(p,q,r)$ is one of $(2,3,2), (2,4,2),(2,5,2),(3,3,2),(3,4,2)$, or $(3,5,2)$. In this paper we show that the Tits alternative holds in the case $(p,q,r)=(3,4,2)$.
