Approximate NNLO QCD corrections to semi-inclusive DIS

We determine approximate next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) corrections to unpolarized and polarized semi-inclusive DIS. They are derived using the threshold resummation formalism, which we fully develop to next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic (NNLL) accuracy, including the two-loop hard factor. The approximate NNLO terms are obtained by expansion of the resummed expression. They include all terms in Mellin space that are logarithmically enhanced at threshold, or that are constant. In terms of the customary SIDIS variables $x$ and $z$ they include all double distributions (that is, "plus" distributions and $δ$-functions) in the partonic variables. We also investigate corrections that are suppressed at threshold and we determine the dominant terms among these. Our numerical estimates suggest much significance of the approximate NNLO terms, along with a reduction in scale dependence.

NNLO nuclear parton distribution functions with electroweak-boson production data from the LHC

We present new sets of nuclear parton distribution functions (nPDFs) at next-to-leading order and next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbative QCD. Our analyses are based on deeply inelastic scattering data with charged-lepton and neutrino beams on nuclear targets, and experimental data from measurements of $W^{\pm},\,Z$ boson production in p+Pb collisions at the LHC. In addition, a set of proton baseline PDFs is fitted within the same framework and with the same theoretical assumptions. The results of our global QCD analysis are compared to existing nPDF sets and to the previous nPDF set TUJU19 which was based on DIS data only. Our work is performed using an open-source tool, xFitter, and the required extensions of the code are discussed as well. We find good agreement with the data included in the fit and a lower value for $χ^2/N_{\mathrm{dp}}$ when performing the fit at next-to-next-to-leading order. We apply the resulting nuclear PDFs to electroweak-boson production in Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC and compare the results to the most recent data from ATLAS and CMS.

Power Corrections to Electroweak Boson Production from Threshold Resummation

We study the power corrections for electroweak boson production that are implied by threshold resummation, which we have extended to massive particles produced at measured transverse momentum, $p_T$, and rapidity. Power corrections in the resulting expressions arise from ambiguities in the low-scale behavior of the perturbative running coupling. Arguing for the relevance of the eikonal approximation, we show that such power corrections begin at order $1/p_T^2$ in full QCD, consistent with fixed-order, massive-gluon analysis. For large-$N$ Mellin moments, the leading behavior is $N^2/p_T^2$, which exponentiates along with the logarithms of threshold resummation.

T-odd proton-helicity asymmetry in semi-inclusive DIS in perturbative QCD

We compute the single-spin asymmetry $A_{UL}$ in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering of unpolarized leptons and longitudinally polarized protons at large transverse momentum of the produced hadron. Our calculation is performed in collinear factorization at the lowest order of QCD perturbation theory. For photon exchange the asymmetry is T-odd and receives contributions from the interference of the tree level and one-loop absorptive amplitudes. We consider the behavior of the spin asymmetry at low transverse momentum where contact to the formalism based on transverse-momentum dependent distribution functions can be made. We also present some phenomenological results relevant for the COMPASS and HERMES experiments and the future Electron-Ion Collider.

Threshold resummation at N$^{3}$LL accuracy and approximate N$^{3}$LO corrections to semi-inclusive DIS

We advance the threshold resummation formalism for semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering (SIDIS) to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic (N$^{3}$LL) order, including the three-loop hard factor. We expand the results in the strong coupling to obtain approximate next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^{3}$LO) corrections for the SIDIS cross section. In Mellin moment space, these corrections include all terms that are logarithmically enhanced at threshold, or that are constant. We also consider a set of corrections that are suppressed near threshold. Our numerical estimates show modest changes of the cross section by the approximate N$^{3}$LO terms, suggesting a very good perturbative stability of the SIDIS process.

Towards a Global QCD Analysis of Fragmentation Functions at Next-To-Next-To-Leading Order Accuracy

We carry out a global QCD analysis of parton-to-pion fragmentation functions at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) accuracy by performing a fit to the combined set of single-inclusive electron-positron annihilation and, for the first time, semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering (SIDIS) multiplicity data. For the latter, we utilize the approximate NNLO QCD corrections that were derived recently within the threshold resummation formalism. We explore the impact of the NNLO corrections on the description of the SIDIS data sets in various kinematic regimes and on the resulting pion fragmentation functions.

TUJU21: nuclear PDFs with electroweak-boson data at NNLO

Nuclear parton distribution functions (nPDFs) can be determined in a global QCD analysis using a wide range of experimental data. In addition to older fixed-target deep inelastic scattering and Drell-Yan (DY) dilepton production data, several analyses from p+Pb collisions at the LHC provide further constraints and extend the kinematic reach of applicable data. Here we present an update of our previous TUJU19 analysis where we now include also electroweak-boson production data recently measured by ATLAS and CMS. For the first time, LHC data are included in a nPDF analysis performed at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in perturbative QCD. As before, our setup is based on the open-source analysis framework xFitter and we fit our own proton baseline, ensuring a fully consistent setup. We find good agreement with the applied data and that the resulting $χ^2/N_{\mathrm{df}}$ is significantly smaller in case of the NNLO analysis (0.84) compared to our NLO analysis (0.94). Also, we present comparisons between our NNLO calculations and electroweak-boson production data in Pb+Pb collisions from ATLAS and CMS and DY data recently measured by CMS where NNLO corrections are found significant.

Factorization and its Breaking in Dijet Single Transverse Spin Asymmetries in $pp$ Collisions

We study factorization in single transverse spin asymmetries for dijet production in proton-proton collisions, by considering soft gluon radiation at one-loop order. We show that the associated transverse momentum dependent (TMD) factorization is valid at the leading logarithmic level. At next-to-leading-logarithmic (NLL) accuracy, however, we find that soft gluon radiation generates terms in the single transverse spin dependent cross section that differ from those known for the unpolarized case. As a consequence, these terms cannot be organized in terms of a spin independent soft factor in the factorization formula. We present leading logarithmic predictions for the single transverse spin dijet asymmetry for $pp$ collisions at RHIC, based on quark Sivers functions constrained by semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering data. We hope that our results will contribute to a better understanding of TMD factorization breaking effects at NLL accuracy and beyond.

Hadron-in-jet production at partonic threshold

We consider the longitudinal momentum distribution of hadrons inside jets in proton-proton collisions. At partonic threshold large double logarithmic corrections arise which need to be resummed to all orders. We develop a factorization formalism within SCET that allows for the joint resummation of threshold and jet radius logarithms. We achieve next-to-leading logarithmic NLL$'$ accuracy by including non-global logarithms in the leading-color approximation. Overall, we find that the threshold resummation leads to a sizable enhancement of the cross section and a reduced QCD scale dependence, suggesting that the all-order resummation can be important for the reliable extraction of fragmentation functions in global analyses when jet substructure data is included.

Access to Photon Fragmentation Functions in Hadronic Jet Production

We argue that the process $pp \to (\text{jet} γ)X$, for which a photon is observed inside a fully reconstructed jet and is treated as part of the jet, offers new probes of the so far little known fragmentation functions for photons. We present a next-to-leading-order QCD calculation of the cross section for this process in the limit that the jet is relatively narrow. We also investigate the background resulting from the two-photon decay of neutral pions. We present numerical results relevant for possible measurements at the LHC and at RHIC. These suggest that $pp \to (\text{jet} γ)X$ should provide clean access to the photon fragmentation functions, provided an efficient suppression of the background is available in experiment.

Drell-Yan lepton angular distributions in perturbative QCD

We present a comprehensive comparison of the available experimental data for the Drell-Yan lepton angular coefficients $λ$ and $ν$ to calculations at leading and next-to-leading order of perturbative QCD. To obtain the next-to-leading order corrections, we make use of publicly available numerical codes that allow us to compute the Drell-Yan cross section at second order in perturbation theory and from which the contributions we need can be extracted. Our comparisons reveal that perturbative QCD is able to describe the experimental data overall rather well, especially at colliders, but also in the fixed-target regime. On the basis of the angular coefficients alone, there appears to be little (if any) convincing evidence for effects that go beyond fixed-order collinear factorized perturbation theory, although the presence of such effects is not ruled out.

Single-Inclusive Production of Hadrons and Jets in Lepton-Nucleon Scattering at NLO

We present next-to-leading order (NLO) perturbative-QCD calculations of the cross sections for $\ell N\to h X$ and $\ell N\to \mathrm{jet}\, X$. The main feature of these processes is that the scattered lepton is not observed, so that the hard scale that makes them perturbative is set by the transverse momentum of the hadron or jet. Kinematically, the two processes thus become direct analogs of single-inclusive production in hadronic collisions which, as has been pointed out in the literature, makes them promising tools for exploring transverse spin phenomena in QCD when the incident nucleon is transversely polarized. We find that the NLO corrections are sizable for the spin-averaged cross section. We also investigate in how far the scattering is dominated by the exchange of almost real (Weizsäcker-Williams) photons. We present numerical estimates of the cross sections for present-day fixed target experiments and for a possible future electron ion collider.

The RHIC Cold QCD Plan for 2017 to 2023: A Portal to the EIC

The exploration of the fundamental structure of strongly interacting matter has always thrived on the complementarity of lepton scattering and purely hadronic probes. As the community eagerly anticipates a future electron ion collider (EIC) in the U.S., an outstanding scientific opportunity remains to complete "must-do" measurements in p+p and p+A physics in the years preceding the EIC. As we describe in this document, these measurements will be essential to fully realize the scientific promise of the EIC by provid-ing a comprehensive set of measurements in hadronic collisions that, when combined with data from the EIC, will establish the validity and limits of factorization and universality. The outlined program will on the one hand lay the groundwork for the EIC, both scientifically and in terms of refining the experimental requirements for the physics program at the EIC, and thus be the natural next step on the path towards an electron-ion collider. On the other hand, while much of the physics in this program is unique to proton-proton and proton-nucleus collisions and offers discovery potential on its own, when combined with data from the EIC it will provide a broad foundation to a deeper understanding of fundamental QCD.

Hadron Fragmentation Inside Jets in Hadronic Collisions

We present an analytical next-to-leading order QCD calculation of the partonic cross sections for the process $pp\rightarrow ({\text{jet}} \,h)X$, for which a specific hadron is observed inside a fully reconstructed jet. In order to obtain the analytical results, we assume the jet to be relatively narrow. We show that the results can be cast into a simple and systematic form based on suitable universal jet functions for the process. We confirm the validity of our calculation by comparing to previous results in the literature for which the next-to-leading order cross section was treated entirely numerically by Monte-Carlo integration techniques. We present phenomenological results for experiments at the LHC and at RHIC. These suggest that $pp\rightarrow ({\text{jet}} \,h)X$ should enable very sensitive probes of fragmentation functions, especially of the one for gluons.

Next-to-leading Order Calculation for Jets Defined by a Maximized Jet Function

We present a next-to-leading order QCD calculation for the single-inclusive production of collimated jets at hadron colliders, when the jet is defined by maximizing a suitable jet function that depends on the momenta of final-state particles in the event. A jet algorithm of this type was initially proposed by Georgi and subsequently further developed into the class of "$J_{E_T}$ algorithms". Our calculation establishes the infrared safety of the algorithms at this perturbative order. We derive analytical results for the relevant partonic cross sections. We discuss similarities and differences with respect to jets defined by cone or (anti-)$k_t$ algorithms and present numerical results for the Tevatron and the LHC.

NLO K-factors for Single-Inclusive Leptoproduction of Hadrons

In these proceedings we discuss next-to-leading order (NLO) perturbative-QCD calculations of the cross section for the process $\ell N\to h X$. We briefly present the main features of the calculation and in particular analyze the role of quasi-real photons that enter the processes because the scattered lepton is not observed. We find that the NLO corrections are sizable for the spin-averaged cross section. In order to quantify this statement we present the K-factors of the cross sections for fixed target experiments HERMES, JLab12 and COMPASS.

Single-Spin Asymmetries in W Boson Production at Next-to-Leading Order

We present an analytic next-to-leading order QCD calculation of the partonic cross sections for single-inclusive lepton production in hadronic collisions, when the lepton originates from the decay of an intermediate electroweak boson and is produced at high transverse momentum. In particular, we consider the case of incoming longitudinally polarized protons for which parity-violating single-spin asymmetries arise that are exploited in the $W$ boson program at RHIC to constrain the proton's helicity parton distributions. Our calculation enables a very fast and efficient numerical computation of the relevant spin asymmetries at RHIC, which is an important ingredient for the inclusion of RHIC data in a global analysis of nucleon helicity structure. We confirm the validity of our calculation by comparing with an existing code that treats the next-to-leading order cross sections entirely numerically by Monte-Carlo integration techniques. We also provide new comparisons of the present RHIC data with results for some of the sets of polarized parton distributions available in the literature.

The RHIC SPIN Program: Achievements and Future Opportunities

Time and again, spin has been a key element in the exploration of fundamental physics. Spin-dependent observables have often revealed deficits in the assumed theoretical framework and have led to novel developments and concepts. Spin is exploited in many parity-violating experiments searching for physics beyond the Standard Model or studying the nature of nucleon-nucleon forces. The RHIC spin program plays a special role in this grand scheme: it uses spin to study how a complex many-body system such as the proton arises from the dynamics of QCD. Many exciting results from RHIC spin have emerged to date, most of them from RHIC running after the 2007 Long Range Plan. In this document we present highlights from the RHIC program to date and lay out the roadmap for the significant advances that are possible with future RHIC running.

Threshold Resummation for Polarized High-$p_T$ Hadron Production at COMPASS

We study the cross section for the photoproduction process $γN\rightarrow h X$ where the incident photon and nucleon are longitudinally polarized and a hadron $h$ is observed at high transverse momentum. Specifically, we address the "direct" part of the cross section, for which the photon interacts in a pointlike way. For this contribution we perform an all-order resummation of logarithmic threshold corrections generated by soft or collinear gluon emission to next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. We present phenomenological results relevant for the COMPASS experiment and compare to recent COMPASS data.

Toward NNLL Resummation for Hadron Production in Hadronic Collisions

We present results relevant for the extension of threshold resummation beyond the next-to-leading logarithmic (NLL) order for QCD hard-scattering processes. As an example, we consider di-hadron production $H_1 H_2\to h_1 h_2 X$, where the produced pair has a large invariant mass. Taking into account the non-trivial color structure of the partonic hard-scattering process, we determine the hard and soft matrices in color space. In our numerical studies we find a significant improvement compared to previous results at NLL accuracy. In particular, the scale dependence of the resummed cross section is greatly reduced. In addition, we comment on the extension of the techniques developed in this work to other observables relevant for hadronic collisions.

Approximate next-to-next-to-leading order corrections to hadronic jet production

We determine dominant next-to-next-to-leading order QCD corrections to single-inclusive jet production at the LHC and Tevatron, using the established threshold resummation framework. In contrast to previous literature on this topic, our study incorporates all of the following features: (1) It properly accounts for the way a jet is defined in experiment and treated in available full next-to-leading order calculations, (2) It includes the three leading classes of logarithmic terms in the perturbative expansion, and (3) It is adapted to the full kinematics in jet transverse momentum and rapidity relevant for experiments. A recent full next-to-next-to-leading order calculation in the purely gluonic channel allows us to assess the region where our approximate corrections provide an accurate description. We expect our results to be important on the way to precision jet phenomenology at the LHC and as benchmark for further full next-to-next-to-leading order calculations.

Evidence for polarization of gluons in the proton

We discuss the impact of recent high-statistics RHIC data on the determination of the gluon polarization in the proton in the context of a global QCD analysis of polarized parton distributions. We find clear evidence for a non-vanishing polarization of gluons in the region of momentum fraction and at the scales mostly probed by the data. Although information from low momentum fractions is presently lacking, this finding is suggestive of a significant contribution of gluon spin to the proton spin, thereby limiting the amount of orbital angular momentum required to balance the proton spin budget.

Soft-gluon Resummation for High-pT Inclusive-Hadron Production at COMPASS

We study the cross section for the photoproduction reaction gamma N -> h X in fixed-target scattering at COMPASS, where the hadron h is produced at large transverse momentum. We investigate the role played by higher-order QCD corrections to the cross section. In particular we address large logarithmic "threshold" corrections to the rapidity dependent partonic cross sections, which we resum to all orders at next-to-leading accuracy. In our comparison to the experimental data we find that the threshold contributions are large and improve the agreement between data and theoretical predictions significantly.

Toward NNLL Threshold Resummation for Hadron Pair Production in Hadronic Collisions

We investigate QCD threshold resummation effects beyond the next-to-leading logarithmic (NLL) order for the process H1 H2->h1 h2 X at high invariant mass of the produced hadron pair. We take into account the color structure of the underlying partonic hard-scattering cross sections and determine the relevant hard and soft matrices in color space that contribute to the resummed cross section at next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic (NNLL) accuracy. We present numerical results for fixed-target and collider regimes. We find a significant improvement compared to previous results at NLL accuracy. In particular, the scale dependence of the resummed cross section is greatly reduced. Use of the most recent set of fragmentation functions also helps in improving the comparison with the experimental data. Our calculation provides a step towards a systematic NNLL extension of threshold resummation also for other hadronic processes, in particular for jet production.

QCD resummation in hadron production

We present calculations of next-to-leading order and resummed QCD corrections for semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering and single-inclusive e+e- annihilation. The resummation is performed to next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. Knowing these QCD corrections is important in order to extract parton distribution functions and fragmentation functions from present and future data for these reactions. We present comparisons of our results to recent data by the COMPASS, HERMES, Belle, and BaBar experiments.

The RHIC Spin Program: Achievements and Future Opportunities

This document summarizes recent achievements of the RHIC spin program and their impact on our understanding of the nucleon's spin structure, i.e. the individual parton (quark and gluon) contributions to the helicity structure of the nucleon and to understand the origin of the transverse spin phenomena. Open questions are identified and a suite of future measurements with polarized beams at RHIC to address them is laid out. Machine and detector requirements and upgrades are briefly discussed.

Threshold resummation for polarized (semi-)inclusive deep inelastic scattering

We explore the effects of the resummation of large logarithmic perturbative corrections to double-longitudinal spin asymmetries for inclusive and semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering in fixed-target experiments. We find that the asymmetries are overall rather robust with respect to the inclusion of the resummed higher-order terms. Significant effects are observed at fairly high values of x, where resummation tends to decrease the spin asymmetries. This effect turns out to be more pronounced for semi-inclusive scattering. We also investigate the potential impact of resummation on the extraction of polarized valence quark distributions in dedicated high-x experiments.

Jet production in (un)polarized pp collisions: dependence on jet algorithm

We investigate single-inclusive high-pT jet production in longitudinally polarized pp collisions at RHIC, with particular focus on the algorithm adopted to define the jets. Following and extending earlier work in the literature, we treat the jets in the approximation that they are rather narrow, in which case analytical results for the corresponding next-to-leading order partonic cross sections can be obtained. This approximation is demonstrated to be very accurate for practically all relevant situations, even at Tevatron and LHC energies. We confront results for cross sections and spin-asymmetries based on using cone- and kt-type jet algorithms. We find that jet cross sections at RHIC can differ significantly depending on the algorithm chosen, but that the spin asymmetries are rather robust. Our results are also useful for matching threshold-resummed calculations of jet cross sections to fixed-order ones.

Linearly polarized Gluons and the Higgs Transverse Momentum Distribution

We investigate the possible role of linearly polarized gluons in Higgs production from unpolarized pp collisions. The transverse momentum distribution of the produced Higgs boson is found to exhibit a modulation with respect to the naive, unpolarized expectation, with the sign depending on the parity of the Higgs boson. The transverse momentum distribution of a scalar Higgs will, therefore, have a shape clearly different from a pseudoscalar Higgs. We suggest that this effect can be used to determine the parity of the Higgs at the LHC, without the need to use challenging angular distributions.

An Observation Concerning the Process Dependence of the Sivers Functions

The $k_\perp$-moment of a quark's Sivers function is known to be related to the corresponding twist-three quark-gluon correlation function $T_{q,F}(x, x)$. The two functions have been extracted from data for single-spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering and in single-inclusive hadron production in $pp$ collisions, respectively. Performing a consistent comparison of the extracted functions, we find that they show a "sign mismatch": while the magnitude of the functions is roughly consistent, the $k_\perp$-moment of the Sivers function has opposite sign from that of $T_{q,F}(x, x)$, both for up and for down quarks. Barring any inconsistencies in our theoretical understanding of the Sivers functions and their process dependence, the implication of this mismatch is that either, the Sivers effect is not dominantly responsible for the observed single-spin asymmetries in $pp$ collisions or, the current semi-inclusive lepton scattering data do not sufficiently constrain the $k_\perp$-moment of the quark Sivers functions. Both possibilities strengthen the case for further experimental investigations of single-spin asymmetries in high-energy $pp$ and $ep$ scattering.

Helicity Parton Distributions from Spin Asymmetries in W-Boson Production at RHIC

We present a next-to-leading order QCD calculation of the cross section and longitudinal spin asymmetry in single-inclusive charged-lepton production, pp -> l X, at RHIC, where the lepton is produced in the decay of an electroweak gauge boson. Our calculation is presented in terms of a multi-purpose Monte-Carlo integration program that may be readily used to include experimental spin asymmetry data in a global analysis of helicity parton densities. We perform a toy global analysis, studying the impact of anticipated RHIC data on our knowledge about the polarized anti-quark distributions.

Multiple parton interactions and forward double pion production in pp and dA scattering

We estimate the contributions by double-parton interactions to the cross sections for pp->pi^0 pi^0 X and dA->pi^0 pi^0 X at RHIC. We find that such contributions become important at large forward rapidities of the produced pions. This is in particular the case for dA scattering, where they strongly enhance the azimuthal-angular independent "pedestal" component of the cross section, providing a natural explanation of this feature of the RHIC dA data. We argue that the discussed processes open a window to studies of double quark distributions in nucleons. We also briefly address the roles of shadowing and energy loss in dA scattering, which we show to affect the double-inclusive pion cross section much more strongly than the single-inclusive one. We discuss the implications of our results for the interpretation of pion azimuthal correlations.

Probing Gluonic Spin-Orbit Correlations in Photon Pair Production

We consider photon pair production in hadronic collisions at large mass and small transverse momentum of the pair, assuming that factorization in terms of transverse momentum dependent parton distributions applies. The unpolarized cross section is found to have azimuthal angular dependencies that are generated by a gluonic version of the Boer-Mulders function. In addition, the single-transversely polarized cross section is sensitive to the gluon Sivers function. We present simple numerical estimates for the Boer-Mulders and Sivers effects in diphoton production at RHIC and find that the process would offer unique opportunities for exploring transverse momentum dependent gluon distributions.

Threshold-Resummed Cross Section for the Drell-Yan Process in Pion-Nucleon Collisions at COMPASS

We present a study of the Drell-Yan process in pion-proton collisions including next-to-leading-logarithmic threshold-resummed contributions. We analyze rapidity-integrated as well as rapidity-differential cross sections in the kinematic regime relevant for the COMPASS fixed target experiment. We find that resummation leads to a significant enhancement of the cross section compared to fixed-order calculations in this regime. Particularly large corrections arise at large forward and backward rapidities of the lepton pair. We also study the scale dependence of the cross section and find it to be substantially reduced by threshold resummation.

Soft-Gluon Resummation and the Valence Parton Distribution Function of the Pion

We determine the valence parton distribution function of the pion by performing a new analysis of data for the Drell-Yan process $π^- N\to μ^+μ^-X$. Compared to previous analyses, we include next-to-leading-logarithmic threshold resummation effects in the calculation of the Drell-Yan cross section. As a result of these, we find a considerably softer valence distribution at high momentum fractions $x$ than obtained in previous next-to-leading order analyses, in line with expectations based on perturbative-QCD counting rules or Dyson-Schwinger equations.

Test of the Universality of Naive-time-reversal-odd Fragmentation Functions

We investigate the ''spontaneous'' hyperon transverse polarization in $e^+e^-$ annihilation and semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering processes as a test of the universality of the naive-time-reversal-odd transverse momentum dependent fragmentation functions. We find that universality implies definite sign relations among various observables. This provides a unique opportunity to study initial/final state interaction effects in the fragmentation process and test the associated factorization.

Drell-Yan Lepton Angular Distribution at Small Transverse Momentum

We investigate the dependence of the Drell-Yan cross section on lepton polar and azimuthal angles, as generated by the lowest-order QCD annihilation and Compton processes. We focus in particular on the azimuthal-angular distributions, which are of the form cos(phi) and cos(2phi). At small transverse momentum q_T of the lepton pair, q_T << Q, with Q the pair mass, these terms are known to be suppressed relative to the phi-independent part of the Drell-Yan cross section by one or two powers of the transverse momentum. Nonetheless, as we show, like the phi-independent part they are subject to large logarithmic corrections, whose precise form however depends on the reference frame chosen. These logarithmic contributions ultimately require resummation to all orders in the strong coupling. We discuss the potential effects of resummation on the various angular terms in the cross section and on the Lam-Tung relation.

QCD Corrections to Dilepton Production near Partonic Threshold in proton-antiproton Scattering

We present a recent study of the QCD corrections to dilepton production near partonic threshold in transversely polarized \bar{p}p scattering. We analyze the role of the higher-order perturbative QCD corrections in terms of the available fixed-order contributions as well as of all-order soft-gluon resummations for the kinematical regime of proposed experiments at GSI-FAIR. We find that perturbative corrections are large for both unpolarized and polarized cross sections, but that the spin asymmetries are stable. The role of the far infrared region of the momentum integral in the resummed exponent and the effect of the NNLL resummation are briefly discussed.

Single-Transverse Spin Asymmetries: From DIS to Hadronic Collisions

We study single-spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering with transversely polarized target. Based on the QCD factorization approach, we consider Sivers and Collins contributions to the asymmetries. We fit simple parameterizations for the Sivers and Collins functions to the recent HERMES data, and compare to results from COMPASS. Using the fitted parameterizations for the Sivers functions, we predict the single transverse spin asymmetries for various processes in $pp$ collisions at RHIC, including the Drell-Yan process and angular correlations in dijet and jet-plus-photon production. These asymmetries are found to be sizable at forward rapidities

Recoil and Power Corrections in High-x_T Direct-Photon Production

We study a class of nonperturbative corrections to single-inclusive photon cross sections at measured transverse momentum p_T, in the large-x_T limit. We develop an extension of the joint (threshold and transverse momentum) resummation formalism, appropriate for large x_T, in which there are no kinematic singularities associated with recoil, and for which matching to fixed order and to threshold resummation at next-to-leading logarithm (NLL) is straightforward. Beyond NLL, we find contributions that can be attributed to recoil from initial state radiation. Associated power corrections occur as inverse powers of p_T^2 and are identified from the infrared structure of integrals over the running coupling. They have significant energy dependence and decrease from typical fixed-target to collider energies. Energy conservation, which is incorporated into joint resummation, moderates the effects of perturbative recoil and power corrections for large x_T.

Threshold Resummation and Rapidity Dependence

We study the effects of threshold resummation on the rapidity dependence of single-particle-inclusive cross sections, using the prompt photon cross section as an example. We make use of the full resummation formula at next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy and develop a new technique for treating rapidity in resummation. We compare our phenomenological results with those of previous studies and discuss differences and similarities of the two existing resummation formalisms.

Isolated-photon production in polarized pp collisions

We perform a detailed study of the production of isolated prompt photons in polarized hadronic collisions, in the centre-of-mass energy range relevant to RHIC. We compare the results obtained for a traditional cone-isolation prescription, with those obtained by imposing an isolation condition that eliminates any contribution to the cross section from the fragmentation mechanism. The latter prescription will allow us to present the first fully consistent next-to-leading order calculation in polarized prompt-photon production. We will discuss the theoretical uncertainties affecting the cross section, addressing the issue of the reliability of the perturbative expansion, for both inclusive isolated-photon and photon-plus-jet observables. Finally, we will study the dependence of our predictions upon the polarized parton densities, and the implications for the measurability of the gluon density.
