Spin-Orbit Correlations in the Pion and the Role of Quark-gluon Interaction

We study the spin-orbit correlations (SOCs) of the pion using overlap of light-front wave functions (LFWFs). Going beyond the leading Fock sector, we incorporate one gluon in the wave function. The analytic form of the higher Fock component of the LFWF is constructed by incorporating a perturbative gluon to the pion state. This allows us to explore the role of quark-gluon interactions in the spin-orbit correlation within a model calculation. We investigate the kinetic and canonical spin-orbit correlations of quarks in the pion, which arise from different decompositions of the energy-momentum tensor. We further explore the difference between kinetic and canonical SOC arising from the inclusion of higher Fock sector containing gluon.

$\cos2ϕ_t$ azimuthal asymmetry in back-to-back $J/ψ$-jet production in $e~p\rightarrow e~J/ψ~Jet~ X$ at the EIC

In this article, we investigate the $\cos2ϕ_t$ azimuthal asymmetry in $e ~p\rightarrow e ~J/ψ~Jet~ X$, where the $J/ψ$-jet pair is almost back-to-back in the transverse plane, within the framework of the generalized parton model(GPM). We use non-relativistic QCD(NRQCD) to calculate the $J/ψ$ production amplitude and incorporate both color singlet(CS) and color octet(CO) contributions to the asymmetry. We estimate the asymmetry using different parameterizations of the gluon TMDs in the kinematics that can be accessed at the future electron-ion collider (EIC) and also investigate the impact of transverse momentum dependent (TMD) evolution on the asymmetry. We present the contributions coming from different states to the asymmetry in NRQCD.

Azimuthal asymmetries in $J/ψ$-photon production at the EIC

We calculate azimuthal asymmetries in back-to-back production of $J/ψ$ and a photon in electron-proton scattering process at the future electron-ion collider (EIC) using TMD factorization framework. We consider the cases where the proton is unpolarized or transversely polarized. For the formation of $J/ψ$, non-relativistic QCD (NRQCD) is used. We find that the cross-section gets contribution from only one color octet state, as a result, the azimuthal modulations become independent of the long-distance matrix elements (LDMEs), and thus can be used to probe, in particular the gluon TMDs which are dominant in this kinematics. We show estimates of the upper bounds of different azimuthal asymmetries using the positivity bounds on TMDs. In addition, we show estimate of asymmetries using the Gaussian parametrization of the TMDs.

Basis light-front quantization approach to photon

We solve for the light-front wave functions (LFWFs) of the physical photon from the eigenvectors of the light-front quantum electrodynamics (QED) Hamiltonian with the aim to determine its bare photon and electron-positron Fock components. We then employ the resulting LFWFs to compute the transverse momentum dependent parton distributions (TMDs) and the generalized parton distributions (GPDs) of the photon. The TMDs are found to be in excellent agreement with the lowest-order perturbative results calculated using the electron-positron quantum fluctuation of the photon. The GPDs are also consistent with the perturbative calculations.

Gravitational Form Factors and Mechanical Properties of the Proton : Connection Between Distributions in 2D and 3D

The gravitational form factors which are obtained from the matrix elements of the energy-momentum tensor provide us information about internal distributions of mass, energy, pressure and shear. The Druck term is the least understood among all the gravitational form factors. In a light front quark-diquark model of proton, we investigate the Druck form factor. Using Abel transformation, we evaluate the 3D distribution in the Breit frame from the 2D light front distributions. The results are compared with other models and lattice predictions.

Superkicks and the photon angular and linear momentum density

We address a problem of proper definition of momentum density for spatially structured electromagnetic fields. We show that the expressions for the momentum and angular momentum obtained locally are not the same when one uses the canonical energy-momentum tensor instead of the symmetric Belinfante energy-momentum tensor in electrodynamics. This has important consequences for interaction of matter with structured light, for example, twisted photons; and would give drastically different results for forces and angular momenta induced on small test objects. We show, with numerical estimates of the size of the effects, situations where the canonical and symmetrized forms induce very different torques or (superkick) recoil momenta on small objects or atomic rotors, over a broad range of circumstances.

Vorticity of Twisted Spinor Fields

Spinor fields with a vortex structure in free space that allow them to have arbitrary integer orbital angular momentum along the direction of motion have been studied for some time. Relatively new is the observation in a certain context that the vortex center of this field structure is, unlike a classical whirlpool, not singular. We point out that there are several ways to calculate the local velocity of the spinor field and that all but one show a singular vorticity at the vortex line. That one, using the Dirac bilinear current with no derivatives, is the only one so far (to our knowledge) studied in the literature in this context and we further show how to understand an apparent conflict in the existing results.

Gravitational form factors and mechanical properties of a quark at one loop in light-front Hamiltonian QCD

We calculate the gravitational form factors (GFFs) and pressure, shear and energy distributions for a quark state dressed with a gluon at one loop in QCD. We use the light-front Hamiltonian approach. In the light-front gauge, we use a two-component formalism to eliminate the constrained fields. The state may be thought of as a perturbative model for a relativistic spin $1/2$ composite system having a gluonic degree of freedom. We compare the results with model calculations for a nucleon.

Sivers Asymmetry in Photoproduction of $J/ψ$ and Jet at the EIC

We calculate the Sivers asymmetry in the photoproduction of almost back-to-back $J/ψ$-jet pair in the process $ep^\uparrow \to J/ψ+\mathrm{jet}+X$, which will be possible at the future planned electron-ion collider (EIC). We use the framework of generalized parton model (GPM), and NRQCD for calculating the $J/ψ$ production rate. We include contributions from both color singlet and color octate states in the asymmetry. We obtain sizable Sivers asymmetry that can be promising to determine the gluon Sivers function. We also investigate the effect of TMD evolution on the asymmetry.

Transverse spin effects in hard semi-inclusive collisions

The nucleons (protons and neutrons) are by far the most abundant form of matter in our visible Universe; they are composite particles made of quarks and gluons, the fundamental quanta of Quantum Chromo Dynamics (QCD). The usual interpretation of the nucleon dynamics in high energy interactions is often limited to a simple one-dimensional picture of a fast moving nucleon as a collection of co-linearly moving quarks and gluons (partons), interacting accordingly to perturbative QCD rules. However, massive experimental evidence shows that, in particular when transverse spin dependent observables are involved, such a simple picture is not adequate. The intrinsic transverse motion of partons has to be taken into account; this opens the way to a new, truly 3-dimensional (3D) study of the nucleon structure. A review of the main experimental data, their interpretation and understanding in terms of new transverse momentum dependent partonic distributions, and the progress in building a 3D imaging of the nucleon is presented.

Hadron-in-jet production at partonic threshold

We consider the longitudinal momentum distribution of hadrons inside jets in proton-proton collisions. At partonic threshold large double logarithmic corrections arise which need to be resummed to all orders. We develop a factorization formalism within SCET that allows for the joint resummation of threshold and jet radius logarithms. We achieve next-to-leading logarithmic NLL$'$ accuracy by including non-global logarithms in the leading-color approximation. Overall, we find that the threshold resummation leads to a sizable enhancement of the cross section and a reduced QCD scale dependence, suggesting that the all-order resummation can be important for the reliable extraction of fragmentation functions in global analyses when jet substructure data is included.

Accessing unpolarized and linearly polarized gluon TMDs through quarkonium production

We present the study of accessing unpolarized and linearly polarized gluon TMDs in J/ψ and Υ(1S) production in unpolarized proton-proton collision at LHC, RHIC and AFTER energies. Non- relativistic QCD based color octet model (COM) is used for estimating quarkonium production rates within transverse momentum dependent factorization formalism. A comparison is drawn between the experimental data and the transverse momentum distribution of quarkonium obtained in COM and color evaporation model.

Access to Photon Fragmentation Functions in Hadronic Jet Production

We argue that the process $pp \to (\text{jet} γ)X$, for which a photon is observed inside a fully reconstructed jet and is treated as part of the jet, offers new probes of the so far little known fragmentation functions for photons. We present a next-to-leading-order QCD calculation of the cross section for this process in the limit that the jet is relatively narrow. We also investigate the background resulting from the two-photon decay of neutral pions. We present numerical results relevant for possible measurements at the LHC and at RHIC. These suggest that $pp \to (\text{jet} γ)X$ should provide clean access to the photon fragmentation functions, provided an efficient suppression of the background is available in experiment.

Exploring universality of transversity in proton-proton collisions

We consider the azimuthal correlations of charged hadron pairs with large total transverse momentum and small relative momentum, produced in proton-proton collisions with one transversely polarized proton. One of these correlations directly probes the chiral-odd transversity parton distribution in connection with a chiral-odd interference fragmentation function. We present predictions for this observable based on previous extractions of transversity (from charged pion pair production in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering) and of the interference fragmentation function (from the production of back-to-back charged pion pairs in electron-positron annihilations). All analyses are performed in the framework of collinear factorization. We compare our predictions to the recent data on proton-proton collisions released by the STAR collaboration at RHIC, and we find them reasonably compatible. This comparison confirms for the first time the predicted role of transversity in proton-proton collisions and it allows to test its universality.

Probing TMDs in heavy quarkonium production in $pp$ collision

We present a recent calculation of $J/ψ$ and $Υ$ production in unpolarized $pp$ collision and show that this can be used to probe the unpolarized gluon as well as the linearly polarized gluon transverse momentum dependent parton distributions (TMDs). We use the color evaporation model for the heavy quarkonium production and use a generalized factorized form of the cross section. We compare the results with experimental data.

Quark-gluon double parton distributions in the light-front dressed quark model

We study parton distributions for two partons, a quark and a gluon, in the light-front dressed quark model, with focus on correlations between the two partons. The model calculation leads to sizable spin-spin and spin-kinematic correlations of interest for studies of double parton scattering (DPS) in high-energy collisions. In particular, we find that the transverse dependence of the double parton distributions (DPDs) does not factorize within the model. The results gives insight to the strengths of correlations in different kinematical regions, which can help in constructing input DPDs in cross section calculations.

Gravitational form factors and transverse spin sum rule in a light front quark-diquark model in AdS/QCD

The gravitational form factors are related to the matrix elements of the energy-momentum tensor $T^{μν}$. Using the light front wave functions of the scalar quark-diquark model for nucleon predicted by the soft-wall AdS/QCD, we calculate the flavor dependent $A(Q^2)$, $B(Q^2)$ and $\bar{C}(Q^2)$ form factors. We also present all the matrix element of the energy-momentum tensor in a transversely polarized state. Further, we evaluate the matrix element of Pauli-Lubanski operator in this model and show that the intrinsic spin sum rule involves the form factor $\bar{C}$. The longitudinal momentum densities in the transverse impact parameter space are also discussed for both unpolarized and transversely polarized nucleons.

Hadron Fragmentation Inside Jets in Hadronic Collisions

We present an analytical next-to-leading order QCD calculation of the partonic cross sections for the process $pp\rightarrow ({\text{jet}} \,h)X$, for which a specific hadron is observed inside a fully reconstructed jet. In order to obtain the analytical results, we assume the jet to be relatively narrow. We show that the results can be cast into a simple and systematic form based on suitable universal jet functions for the process. We confirm the validity of our calculation by comparing to previous results in the literature for which the next-to-leading order cross section was treated entirely numerically by Monte-Carlo integration techniques. We present phenomenological results for experiments at the LHC and at RHIC. These suggest that $pp\rightarrow ({\text{jet}} \,h)X$ should enable very sensitive probes of fragmentation functions, especially of the one for gluons.

Next-to-leading Order Calculation for Jets Defined by a Maximized Jet Function

We present a next-to-leading order QCD calculation for the single-inclusive production of collimated jets at hadron colliders, when the jet is defined by maximizing a suitable jet function that depends on the momenta of final-state particles in the event. A jet algorithm of this type was initially proposed by Georgi and subsequently further developed into the class of "$J_{E_T}$ algorithms". Our calculation establishes the infrared safety of the algorithms at this perturbative order. We derive analytical results for the relevant partonic cross sections. We discuss similarities and differences with respect to jets defined by cone or (anti-)$k_t$ algorithms and present numerical results for the Tevatron and the LHC.

Probing Transverse Momentum Dependent Parton Distributions in Charmonium and Bottomonium Production

We propose the study of unpolarized transverse momentum dependent gluon parton distributions as well as the effect of linearly polarized gluons on transverse momentum and rapidity distributions of $J/ψ$ and $Υ$ production within the framework of transverse momentum dependent factorization employing color evaporation model (CEM) in unpolarized proton-proton collision. We estimate the transverse momentum and rapidity distributions of $J/ψ$ and $Υ$ at LHCb, RHIC and AFTER energies using TMD evolution formalism.

Approximate next-to-next-to-leading order corrections to hadronic jet production

We determine dominant next-to-next-to-leading order QCD corrections to single-inclusive jet production at the LHC and Tevatron, using the established threshold resummation framework. In contrast to previous literature on this topic, our study incorporates all of the following features: (1) It properly accounts for the way a jet is defined in experiment and treated in available full next-to-leading order calculations, (2) It includes the three leading classes of logarithmic terms in the perturbative expansion, and (3) It is adapted to the full kinematics in jet transverse momentum and rapidity relevant for experiments. A recent full next-to-next-to-leading order calculation in the purely gluonic channel allows us to assess the region where our approximate corrections provide an accurate description. We expect our results to be important on the way to precision jet phenomenology at the LHC and as benchmark for further full next-to-next-to-leading order calculations.

Novel Properties of Twisted-Light Absorption

We discuss novel features of twisted-light absorption both by hydrogen-like atoms and by micro-particles. First, we extend the treatment of atomic photoexcitation by twisted photons to include atomic recoil, derive generalized quantum selection rules and consider phenomena of forbidden atomic transitions. Second, using the same electromagnetic potential for the twisted light beams, we analyze the radiation pressure from these beams on micro-sized particles, and verify that while the Poynting vector can in some circumstances point back toward the source, a complete analysis nonetheless gives a repulsive radiation pressure.

Quark Wigner Distributions and Orbital Angular Momentum in Light-front Dressed Quark Model

We calculate the Wigner functions for a quark target dressed with a gluon. These give a combined position and momentum space information of the quark distributions and are related to both generalized parton distributions (GPDs) and transverse momentum dependent parton distributions (TMDs). We calculate and compare the different definitions of quark orbital angular momentum in this model. We compare our results with other model calculations.

Excitation of an Atom by Twisted Photons

Twisted photon states, or photon states with large ($> \hbar$) angular momentum projection in the direction of motion, can photoexcite atomic final states of differing quantum numbers. If the photon symmetry axis coincides with the center of an atom, there are known selection rules that require exact matching between the quantum numbers of the photon and the photoexcited states. The more general case of arbitrarily positioned beams relaxes the selection rules but produces a distribution of quantum numbers of the final atomic states that is novel and distinct from final states produced by plane-wave photons. Numerical calculations are presented using a hydrogen atom as an example.

Generalized Parton Distributions of the Photon with Helicity Flip

We present a calculation of the generalized parton distributions (GPDs) of the photon when the helicity of the initial photon is different from the final photon. We calculate the GPDs using overlaps of photon light-front wave functions (LFWFs) at leading order in electromagnetic coupling $α$ and zeroth order in the strong coupling $α_s$, when the momentum transfer is purely in the transverse direction. These involve a contribution of orbital angular momentum of two units in the LFWFs. We express these GPDs in the impact parameter space.

Off-axis excitation of hydrogenlike atoms by twisted photons

We show that the twisted photon states, or photon states with large ($> \hbar$) angular momentum projection ($m_γ$) in the direction of motion, can photoexcite atomic levels for a hydrogen-like atom that are novel and distinct and are not restricted by $m_γ$, when the symmetry axis of the twisted-photon beam does not coincide with the center of the atomic target. Selection rules are given and interesting implications and observables for the above process are pointed out.

The GPDs of The Photon

We report on a recent calculation of the generalized parton distributions (GPDs) of the photon when the momentum transfer in the transverse direction is non-zero. We use an overlap representation of the photon GPDs in terms of the photon light-front wave functions. We calculate the GPDs at leading order in electromagnetic coupling $α$ and zeroth order in strong coupling $α_s$. We consider also the case when the helicity of the photon is flipped. Fourier transform of the GPDs with respect to the transverse momentum transfer gives the parton distributions of the photon in impact parameter space.

Transverse Single Spin Asymmetries and Charmonium Production

We estimate transverse spin single spin asymmetry(TSSA) in the process $e+p^\uparrow \to J/ψ+X$ using color evaporation model of charmonium production. We take into account transverse momentum dependent(TMD) evolution of Sivers function and parton distribution function and show that the there is a reduction in the asymmetry as compared to our earlier estimates wherein the $Q^2$ - evolution was implemented only through DGLAP evolution of unpolarized gluon densities.

Transverse Single Spin Asymmetry in $e+p^\uparrow \to e+J/ψ+X $ and Transverse Momentum Dependent Evolution of the Sivers Function

We extend our analysis of transverse single spin asymmetry (SSA) in electroproduction of $J/ψ$ to include the effect of the scale evolution of the transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distribution functions and gluon Sivers function. We estimate SSA for JLab, HERMES, COMPASS, and eRHIC energies using the color evaporation model of charmonium production, using an analytically obtained approximate solution of TMD evolution equations discussed in the literature. We find that there is a reduction in the asymmetry compared with our predictions for the earlier case considered by us, wherein the $Q^2$ dependence came only from DGLAP evolution of the unpolarized gluon densities and a different parametrization of the TMD Sivers function was used.

Gluon Sivers Function and Single Spin Asymmetry in $e+p^\uparrow \rightarrow e+J/ψ+ X$

We propose measurement of transverse single spin asymmetry (SSA) in charmonium production as a probe of gluon Sivers function. We estimate SSA in low virtuality electroproduction of $J/ψ$ using color evaporation model of charmonium production and existing models of the gluon Sivers function and find sizable asymmetry at JLab, HERMES, COMPASS and eRHIC energies.

Jet production in (un)polarized pp collisions: dependence on jet algorithm

We investigate single-inclusive high-pT jet production in longitudinally polarized pp collisions at RHIC, with particular focus on the algorithm adopted to define the jets. Following and extending earlier work in the literature, we treat the jets in the approximation that they are rather narrow, in which case analytical results for the corresponding next-to-leading order partonic cross sections can be obtained. This approximation is demonstrated to be very accurate for practically all relevant situations, even at Tevatron and LHC energies. We confront results for cross sections and spin-asymmetries based on using cone- and kt-type jet algorithms. We find that jet cross sections at RHIC can differ significantly depending on the algorithm chosen, but that the spin asymmetries are rather robust. Our results are also useful for matching threshold-resummed calculations of jet cross sections to fixed-order ones.

Sivers Effect and Transverse Single Spin Asymmetry in $e+p^\uparrow \to e+J/ψ+X$

We discuss the possibility of using electroproduction of $J/ψ$ as a probe of gluon Sivers function by measuring single spin asymmetry (SSA) in experiments with transversely polarized protons and electron beams. We estimate SSA for JLab, HERMES, COMPASS and eRHIC energies using the color evaporation model of charmonium production and find asymmetry up to 25% for certain choices of model parameters which have been used earlier for estimating SSA in the SIDIS and Drell-Yan processes.

A model independent analysis of gluonic pole matrix elements and universality of TMD fragmentation functions

Gluonic pole matrix elements explain the appearance of single spin asymmetries (SSA) in high-energy scattering processes. They involve a combination of operators which are odd under time reversal (T-odd). Such matrix elements appear in principle both for parton distribution functions and parton fragmentation functions. We show that for parton fragmentation functions these gluonic pole matrix elements vanish as a consequence of the analytic structure of scattering amplitudes in Quantum Chromodynamics. This result is important in the study of the universality of transverse momentum dependent (TMD) fragmentation functions.

Twist Three Distribution e(x) : Sum Rules and Equation of Motion Relations

We investigate the twist three distribution function $e(x)$ in light-front Hamiltonian perturbation theory. In light-front gauge, by eliminating the constrained field, we find a mass term, an intrinsic transverse momentum dependent term and a 'genuine twist three' quark-gluon interaction term in the operator. The equation of motion relation, moment relation and the sum rules are satisfied for a quark at one loop. We compare the results with other model calculations.

Timelike Virtual Compton Scattering from Electron-Positron Radiative Annihilation

We propose measurements of the deeply virtual Compton amplitude (DVCS), gamma* to H H-bar gamma, in the timelike t = (p_{H} + p_{H-bar})^2 > 0 kinematic domain which is accessible at electron-positron colliders via the radiative annihilation process e+ e- to H H-bar gamma. These processes allow the measurement of timelike deeply virtual Compton scattering for a variety of H H-bar hadron pairs such as pi+ pi-, K+ K-, and D D-bar as well as p p-bar. As in the conventional spacelike DVCS, there are interfering coherent amplitudes contributing to the timelike processes involving C= - form factors. The interference between the amplitudes measures the phase of the C=+ timelike DVCS amplitude relative to the phase of the timelike form factors and can be isolated by considering the forward-backward e+ \leftrightarrow e- asymmetry. The J=0 fixed pole contribution which arises from the local coupling of the two photons to the quark current plays a special role. As an example we present a simple model.

Elecromagnetic Duality on the Light-Front in the Presence of External Sources

We investigate the issue of electromagnetic duality on the light front. We work with Zwanziger's theory of electric and magnetic sources which is appropriate for treating duality. When quantized on the light-front in the light front gauge, this theory yields two independent phase space degrees of freedom, namely the two transverse field components, the right number to describe the gauge field sector of normal light-front QED and also the appropriate commutator between them. The electromagnetic duality transformation formulated in terms of them is similar in form to the Susskind transformation proposed for the free theory, provided one identifies them as the dynamical field components of the photon on the light-front in the presence of magnetic sources. The Hamiltonian density written in terms of these components is invariant under the duality transformation.

Twist Four Longitudinal Structure Function in Light-Front QCD

To resolve various outstanding issues associated with the twist four longitudinal structure function ${F_L^{τ=4}(x)}$ we perform an analysis based on the BJL expansion for the forward virtual photon-hadron Compton scattering amplitude and equal (light-front) time current algebra. Using the Fock space expansion for states and operators, we evaluate the twist four longitudinal structure function for dressed quark and gluon targets in perturbation theory. With the help of a new sum rule which we have derived recently we show that the quadratic and logarithmic divergences generated in the bare theory are related to corresponding mass shifts in old-fashioned light-front perturbation theory. We present numerical results for the $F_2$ and $F_L$ structure functions for the meson in two-dimensional QCD in the one pair approximation. We discuss the relevance of our results for the problem of the partitioning of hadron mass in QCD.
