An invitation to topological orders and category theory

Although it has been a well-known fact, for more than two decades, that category theory is needed for the study of topological orders, it is still a non-trivial challenge for students and working physicists to master the abstract language of category theory. In this work, for those who have no background in category theory, we explain in great details how the structure of a (braided) fusion category naturally emerges from lattice models and physical intuitions. Moreover, we show that nearly all mathematical notions and constructions in fusion categories and its representation theory, such as (monoidal) functors, Drinfeld center, module categories, Morita equivalence, condensation completion and fusion 2-categories, naturally emerge from lattice models and physical intuitions. In this process, we also introduce some basic notions and important results of topological orders.

Categories of quantum liquids III

We continue our study of the categories of quantum liquids started in a previous work. We combine local quantum symmetries with topological skeletons into a single mathematical theory of topological nets and defect nets. In particular, we introduce the notion of a topological net, which is motivated from and generalizes that of a conformal net, and the notion of a defect net which generalizes that of a defect between conformal nets. We give explicit examples of them. Moreover, we construct the category of topological $n$-nets with $k$-morphisms defined by defect $n$-nets of codimension $k$, and show that the category of $n$D quantum liquids can be extracted from it and computed explicitly via the condensation theory of topological nets.

One dimensional gapped quantum phases and enriched fusion categories

In this work, we use Ising chain and Kitaev chain to check the validity of an earlier proposal in arXiv:2011.02859 that enriched fusion (higher) categories provide a unified categorical description of all gapped/gapless quantum liquid phases, including symmetry-breaking phases, topological orders, SPT/SET orders and certain gapless quantum phases. In particular, we show explicitly that, in each gapped phase realized by these two models, the spacetime observables form a fusion category enriched in a braided fusion category. We also study the categorical descriptions of the boundaries of these models. In the end, we provide a classification of and the categorical descriptions of all 1-dimensional (the spatial dimension) gapped quantum phases with a finite onsite symmetry.

A mathematical theory of gapless edges of 2d topological orders. Part I

This is the first part of a two-part work on a unified mathematical theory of gapped and gapless edges of 2d topological orders. We analyze all the possible observables on the 1+1D world sheet of a chiral gapless edge of a 2d topological order, and show that these observables form an enriched unitary fusion category, the Drinfeld center of which is precisely the unitary modular tensor category associated to the bulk. This mathematical description of a chiral gapless edge automatically includes that of a gapped edge (i.e. a unitary fusion category) as a special case. Therefore, we obtain a unified mathematical description and a classification of both gapped and chiral gapless edges of a given 2d topological order. In the process of our analysis, we encounter an interesting and reoccurring phenomenon: spatial fusion anomaly, which leads us to propose the Principle of Universality at RG fixed points for all quantum field theories. Our theory also implies that all chiral gapless edges can be obtained from a so-called topological Wick rotations. This fact leads us to propose, at the end of this work, a surprising correspondence between gapped and gapless phases in all dimensions.

A relation between chiral central charge and ground state degeneracy in 2+1-dimensional topological orders

A bosonic topological order on $d$-dimensional closed space $Σ^d$ may have degenerate ground states. The space $Σ^d$ with different shapes (different metrics) form a moduli space ${\cal M}_{Σ^d}$. Thus the degenerate ground states on every point in the moduli space ${\cal M}_{Σ^d}$ form a complex vector bundle over ${\cal M}_{Σ^d}$. It was suggested that the collection of such vector bundles for $d$-dimensional closed spaces of all topologies completely characterizes the topological order. Using such a point of view, we propose a direct relation between two seemingly unrelated properties of 2+1-dimensional topological orders: (1) the chiral central charge $c$ that describes the many-body density of states for edge excitations (or more precisely the thermal Hall conductance of the edge), (2) the ground state degeneracy $D_g$ on closed genus $g$ surface. We show that $c D_g/2 \in \mathbb{Z},\ g\geq 3$ for bosonic topological orders. We explicitly checked the validity of this relation for over 140 simple topological orders. For fermionic topological orders, let $D_{g,σ}^{e}$ ($D_{g,σ}^{o}$) be the degeneracy with even (odd) number of fermions for genus-$g$ surface with spin structure $σ$. Then we have $2c D_{g,σ}^{e} \in \mathbb{Z}$ and $2c D_{g,σ}^{o} \in \mathbb{Z}$ for $g\geq 3$.

Classification of topological phases with finite internal symmetries in all dimensions

We develop a mathematical theory of symmetry protected trivial (SPT) orders and anomaly-free symmetry enriched topological (SET) orders in all dimensions via two different approaches with an emphasis on the second approach. The first approach is to gauge the symmetry in the same dimension by adding topological excitations as it was done in the 2d case, in which the gauging process is mathematically described by the minimal modular extensions of unitary braided fusion 1-categories. This 2d result immediately generalizes to all dimensions except in 1d, which is treated with special care. The second approach is to use the 1-dimensional higher bulk of the SPT/SET order and the boundary-bulk relation. This approach also leads us to a precise mathematical description and a classification of SPT/SET orders in all dimensions. The equivalence of these two approaches, together with known physical results, provides us with many precise mathematical predictions.

A topological phase transition on the edge of the 2d $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological order

The unified mathematical theory of gapped and gapless edges of 2d topological orders was developed by two of the authors. It provides a powerful tool to study pure edge topological phase transitions on the edges of 2d topological orders (without altering the bulks). In particular, it implies that the critical points are described by enriched fusion categories. In this work, we illustrate this idea in a concrete example: the 2d $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological order. In particular, we construct an enriched fusion category, which describes a gappable non-chiral gapless edge of the 2d $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological order; then use an explicit lattice model construction to realize the critical point and, at the same time, all the ingredients of this enriched fusion category.

Gapped domain walls between 2+1D topologically ordered states

The 2+1D topological order can be characterized by the mapping-class-group representations for Riemann surfaces of genus-1, genus-2, etc. In this paper, we use those representations to determine the possible gapped boundaries of a 2+1D topological order, as well as the domain walls between two topological orders. We find that mapping-class-group representations for both genus-1 and genus-2 surfaces are needed to determine the gapped domain walls and boundaries. Our systematic theory is based on the fixed-point partition functions for the walls (or the boundaries), which completely characterize the gapped domain walls (or the boundaries). The mapping-class-group representations give rise to conditions that must be satisfied by the fixed-point partition functions, which leads to a systematic theory. Such conditions can be viewed as bulk topological order determining the (non-invertible) gravitational anomaly at the domain wall, and our theory can be viewed as finding all types of the gapped domain wall given a (non-invertible) gravitational anomaly. We also developed a systematic theory of gapped domain walls (boundaries) based on the structure coefficients of condensable algebras.

Pointed Drinfeld center functor

In this work, using the functoriality of Drinfeld center of fusion categories, we generalize an earlier result on the functoriality of full center of simple separable algebras in a fixed fusion category to all fusion categories. This generalization produces a new center functor, which involves both Drinfeld center and full center and will be called the pointed Drinfeld center functor. We prove that this pointed Drinfeld center functor is a symmetric monoidal equivalence. It turns out that this functor provides a precise and rather complete mathematical formulation of the boundary-bulk relation of 1+1D rational conformal field theories (RCFT). In this process, we solve an old problem of computing the fusion of two 0D (or 1D) wall CFT's along a non-trivial 1+1D bulk RCFT.

A theory of 2+1D fermionic topological orders and fermionic/bosonic topological orders with symmetries

We propose that, up to invertible topological orders, 2+1D fermionic topological orders without symmetry and 2+1D fermionic/bosonic topological orders with symmetry $G$ are classified by non-degenerate unitary braided fusion categories (UBFC) over a symmetric fusion category (SFC); the SFC describes a fermionic product state without symmetry or a fermionic/bosonic product state with symmetry $G$, and the UBFC has a modular extension. We developed a simplified theory of non-degenerate UBFC over a SFC based on the fusion coefficients $N^{ij}_k$ and spins $s_i$. This allows us to obtain a list that contains all 2+1D fermionic topological orders (without symmetry). We find explicit realizations for all the fermionic topological orders in the table. For example, we find that, up to invertible $p+\hspace{1pt}\mathrm{i}\hspace{1pt} p$ fermionic topological orders, there are only four fermionic topological orders with one non-trivial topological excitation: (1) the $K={\scriptsize \begin{pmatrix} -1&0\\0&2\end{pmatrix}}$ fractional quantum Hall state, (2) a Fibonacci bosonic topological order $2^B_{14/5}$ stacking with a fermionic product state, (3) the time-reversal conjugate of the previous one, (4) a primitive fermionic topological order that has a chiral central charge $c=\frac14$, whose only topological excitation has a non-abelian statistics with a spin $s=\frac14$ and a quantum dimension $d=1+\sqrt{2}$. We also proposed a categorical way to classify 2+1D invertible fermionic topological orders using modular extensions.

Boundary-bulk relation for topological orders as the functor mapping higher categories to their centers

In this paper, we study the relation between topological orders and their gapped boundaries. We propose that the bulk for a given gapped boundary theory is unique. It is actually a consequence of a microscopic definition of a local topological order, which is a (potentially anomalous) topological order defined on an open disk. Using this uniqueness, we show that the notion of "bulk" is equivalent to the notion of center in mathematics. We achieve this by first introducing the notion of a morphism between two local topological orders of the same dimension, then proving that the bulk satisfying the same universal property as that of the center in mathematics. We propose a classification (formulated as a macroscopic definition) of $n+$1D local topological orders by unitary multi-fusion $n$-categories, and explain that the notion of a morphism between two local topological orders is compatible with that of a unitary monoidal $n$-functor in a few low dimensional cases. We also explain in some low dimensional cases that this classification is compatible with the result of "bulk = center". In the end, we explain that above boundary-bulk relation is only the first layer of a hierarchical structure which can be summarized by the functoriality of the bulk (or center). This functoriality also provides the physical meanings of some well-known mathematical results on fusion 1-categories. This work can also be viewed as the first step towards a systematic study of the category of local topological orders, and the boundary-bulk relation actually provides a useful tool for this study.

Spreading Speeds and Linear Determinacy for Two Species Competition Systems with Nonlocal Dispersal in Periodic Habitats

The current paper is concerned with the existence of spreading speeds and linear determinacy for two species competition systems with nonlocal dispersal in time and space periodic habitats. The notion of spreading speed intervals for such a system is first introduced via the natural features of spreading speeds. The existence and lower bounds of spreading speed intervals are then established. When the periodic dependence of the habitat is only on the time variable, the existence of a single spreading speed is proved. It also shows that, under certain conditions, the spreading speed interval in any direction is a singleton, and, moreover, the linear determinacy holds.

A note on linear approximately orthogonality preserving mappings

In this paper, linear $\varepsilon$-orthogonality preserving mappings are studied. We define $\hat{\varepsilon}\left(T\right) $ as the smallest $\varepsilon$ for which $T$ is $\varepsilon$-orthogonality preserving, and then derive an exact formula for $\hat{\varepsilon}\left( T\right) $ in terms of $\left \Vert T\right \Vert $ and the minimum modulus $m\left( T\right) $ of $T$. We see that $\varepsilon$-orthogonality preserving mappings (for some $\varepsilon<1$) are exactly the operators that are bounded from below. We improve an upper bounded in the stability equation given in [7, Theorem 2.3], which was thought to be sharp.

Braided fusion categories, gravitational anomalies, and the mathematical framework for topological orders in any dimensions

Gravitational anomalies can be realized on the boundary of topologically ordered states in one higher dimension and are described by topological orders in one higher dimension. In this paper, we try to develop a general theory for both topological order and gravitational anomaly in any dimensions. (1) We introduce the notion of BF category to describe the braiding and fusion properties of topological excitations that can be point-like, string-like, etc. A subset of BF categories -- closed BF categories -- classify topological orders in any dimensions, while generic BF categories classify (potentially) anomalous topological orders that can appear at a boundary of a gapped quantum liquid in one higher dimension. (2) We introduce topological path integral based on tensor network to realize those topological orders. (3) Bosonic topological orders have an important topological invariant: the vector bundles of the degenerate ground states over the moduli spaces of closed spaces with different metrics. They may fully characterize topological orders. (4) We conjecture that a topological order has a gappable boundary iff the above mentioned vector bundles are flat. (5) We find a holographic phenomenon that every topological order with a gappable boundary can be uniquely determined by the knowledge of the boundary. As a consequence, BF categories in different dimensions form a (monoid) cochain complex, that reveals the structure and relation of topological orders and gravitational anomalies in different dimensions. We also studied the simplest kind of bosonic topological orders that have no non-trivial topological excitations. We find that this kind of topological orders form a $\mathbb{Z}$ class in 2+1D (with gapless edge), a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ class in 4+1D (with gappable boundary), and a $\mathbb{Z}\oplus \mathbb{Z}$ class in 6+1D (with gapless boundary).

Liouville Type Property and Spreading Speeds of KPP Equations in Periodic Media with Localized Spatial Inhomogeneity

The current paper is devoted to the study of semilinear dispersal evolution equations of the form $$ u_t(t,x)=(\mathcal{A}u)(t,x)+u(t,x)f(t,x,u(t,x)),\quad x\in\mathcal{H}, $$ where $\mathcal{H}=\RR^N$ or $\ZZ^N$, $\mathcal{A}$ is a random dispersal operator or nonlocal dispersal operator in the case $\mathcal{H}=\RR^N$ and is a discrete dispersal operator in the case $\mathcal{H}=\ZZ^N$, and $f$ is periodic in $t$, asymptotically periodic in $x$ (i.e. $f(t,x,u)-f_0(t,x,u)$ converges to 0 as $\|x\|\to\infty$ for some time and space periodic function $f_0(t,x,u)$), and is of KPP type in $u$. It is proved that Liouville type property for such equations holds, that is, time periodic strictly positive solutions are unique. It is also proved that if $u\equiv 0$ is a linearly unstable solution to the time and space periodic limit equation of such an equation, then it has a unique stable time periodic strictly positive solution and has a spatial spreading speed in every direction.

Cardy algebras and sewing constraints, II

This is the part II of a two-part work started in arXiv:0807.3356 [math.QA]. In part I, Cardy algebras were studied, a notion which arises from the classification of genus-0,1 open-closed rational conformal field theories. In this part, we prove that a Cardy algebra also satisfies the higher genus factorisation and modular-invariance properties formulated in arXiv:hep-th/0612306 in terms of the notion of a solution to the sewing constraints. We present the proof by showing that the latter notion, which is defined as a monoidal natural transformation, can be expressed in terms of generators and relations, which correspond exactly to the defining data and axioms of a Cardy algebra.

Electric-magnetic duality of lattice systems with topological order

We investigate the duality structure of quantum lattice systems with topological order, a collective order also appearing in fractional quantum Hall systems. We define electromagnetic (EM) duality for all of Kitaev's quantum double models based on discrete gauge theories with Abelian and non-Abelian groups, and identify its natural habitat as a new class of topological models based on Hopf algebras. We interpret these as extended string-net models, whereupon Levin and Wen's string-nets, which describe all intrinsic topological orders on the lattice with parity and time-reversal invariance, arise as magnetic and electric projections of the extended models. We conjecture that all string-net models can be extended in an analogous way, using more general algebraic and tensor-categorical structures, such that EM duality continues to hold. We also identify this EM duality with an invertible domain wall. Physical applications include topology measurements in the form of pairs of dual tensor networks.

Functoriality of the center of an algebra

The notion of the center of an algebra over a field k has a far reaching generalization to algebras in monoidal categories. The center then lives in the monoidal center of the original category. This generalization plays an important role in the study of bulk-boundary duality of rational conformal field theories. In this paper, we study functorial properties of the center. We show that it gives rise to a 2-functor from the bicategory of semisimple indecomposable module categories over a fusion category to the bicategory of commutative algebras in the monoidal center of this fusion category. Morphism spaces of the latter bicategory are extended from algebra homomorphisms to certain categories of cospans. We conjecture that the above 2-functor arises from a lax 3-functor between tricategories, and that in this setting one can relax the conditions from fusion categories to finite tensor categories. We briefly outline how one is naturally lead to the above 2-functor when studying rational conformal field theory with defects of all codimensions. For example, the cospans of the target bicategory correspond to spaces of defect fields and to the bulk-defect operator product expansions.

Models for gapped boundaries and domain walls

We define a class of lattice models for two-dimensional topological phases with boundary such that both the bulk and the boundary excitations are gapped. The bulk part is constructed using a unitary tensor category $\calC$ as in the Levin-Wen model, whereas the boundary is associated with a module category over $\calC$. We also consider domain walls (or defect lines) between different bulk phases. A domain wall is transparent to bulk excitations if the corresponding unitary tensor categories are Morita equivalent. Defects of higher codimension will also be studied. In summary, we give a dictionary between physical ingredients of lattice models and tensor-categorical notions.

Positive Stationary Solutions and Spreading Speeds of KPP Equations in Locally Spatially Inhomogeneous Media

The current paper is concerned with positive stationary solutions and spatial spreading speeds of KPP type evolution equations with random or nonlocal or discrete dispersal in locally spatially inhomogeneous media. It is shown that such an equation has a unique globally stable positive stationary solution and has a spreading speed in every direction. Moreover, it is shown that the localized spatial inhomogeneity of the medium neither slows down nor speeds up the spatial spreading in all the directions.

Some universal properties of Levin-Wen models

We review the key steps of the construction of Levin-Wen type of models on lattices with boundaries and defects of codimension 1,2,3 in a joint work with Alexei Kitaev. We emphasize some universal properties, such as boundary-bulk duality and duality-defect correspondence, shared by all these models. New results include a detailed analysis of the local properties of a boundary excitation and a conjecture on the functoriality of the monoidal center.

Conformal field theory and a new geometry

This paper is a review of open-closed rational conformal field theory (CFT) via the theory of vertex operator algebras (VOAs), together with a proposal of a new geometry based on CFTs and D-branes. We will start with an outline of the idea of the new geometry, followed by some philosophical background behind this vision. Then we will review a working definition of CFT slightly modified from Segal's original definition and explain how VOA emerges from it naturally. Next, using the representation theory of rational VOAs, we will discuss a classification result of open-closed rational CFTs, from which some basic properties of a rational CFT, such as the Holographic Principle, can be derived. They will also serve as supporting evidences for the vision of a new geometry. In the end, we briefly discuss the connection between our vision of a new geometry and other topics.

Field theories with defects and the centre functor

This note is intended as an introduction to the functorial formulation of quantum field theories with defects. After some remarks about models in general dimension, we restrict ourselves to two dimensions - the lowest dimension in which interesting field theories with defects exist. We study in some detail the simplest example of such a model, namely a topological field theory with defects which we describe via lattice TFT. Finally, we give an application in algebra, where the defect TFT provides us with a functorial definition of the centre of an algebra. This involves changing the target category of commutative algebras into a bicategory. Throughout this paper, we emphasise the role of higher categories - in our case bicategories - in the description of field theories with defects.

Invertible defects and isomorphisms of rational CFTs

Given two two-dimensional conformal field theories, a domain wall -- or defect line -- between them is called invertible if there is another defect with which it fuses to the identity defect. A defect is called topological if it is transparent to the stress tensor. A conformal isomorphism between the two CFTs is a linear isomorphism between their state spaces which preserves the stress tensor and is compatible with the operator product expansion. We show that for rational CFTs there is a one-to-one correspondence between invertible topological defects and conformal isomorphisms if both preserve the rational symmetry. This correspondence is compatible with composition.

Cardy condition for open-closed field algebras

Let $V$ be a vertex operator algebra satisfying certain reductivity and finiteness conditions such that $\mathcal{C}_V$, the category of V-modules, is a modular tensor category. We study open-closed field algebras over V equipped with nondegenerate invariant bilinear forms for both open and closed sectors. We show that they give algebras over certain $\C$-extension of the Swiss-cheese partial dioperad, and we obtain Ishibashi states easily in such algebras. We formulate Cardy condition algebraically in terms of the action of the modular transformation $S: τ\mapsto -\frac{1}τ$ on the space of intertwining operators. We then derive a graphical representation of S in the modular tensor category $\mathcal{C}_V$. This result enables us to give a categorical formulation of Cardy condition and modular invariant conformal full field algebra over $V\otimes V$. Then we incorporate the modular invariance condition for genus-one closed theory, Cardy condition and the axioms for open-closed field algebra over V equipped with nondegenerate invariant bilinear forms into a tensor-categorical notion called Cardy $\mathcal{C}_V|\mathcal{C}_{V\otimes V}$-algebra. We also give a categorical construction of Cardy $\mathcal{C}_V|\mathcal{C}_{V\otimes V}$-algebra in Cardy case.

Open-closed field algebras

We introduce the notions of open-closed field algebra and open-closed field algebra over a vertex operator algebra V. In the case that V satisfies certain finiteness and reductivity conditions, we show that an open-closed field algebra over V canonically gives an algebra over a $\C$-extension of the Swiss-cheese partial operad. We also give a tensor categorical formulation and categorical constructions of open-closed field algebras over V.

Full field algebras, operads and tensor categories

We study the operadic and categorical formulations of (conformal) full field algebras. In particular, we show that a grading-restricted $\R\times \R$-graded full field algebra is equivalent to an algebra over a partial operad constructed from spheres with punctures and local coordinates. This result is generalized to conformal full field algebras over $V^L\otimes V^R$, where V^L and V^R are two vertex operator algebras satisfying certain finiteness and reductivity conditions. We also study the geometry interpretation of conformal full field algebras over $V^L\otimes V^R$ equipped with a nondegenerate invariant bilinear form. By assuming slightly stronger conditions on V^L and V^R, we show that a conformal full field algebra over $V^L\otimes V^R$ equipped with a nondegenerate invariant bilinear form exactly corresponds to a commutative Frobenius algebra with a trivial twist in the category of $V^L\otimes V^R$-modules. The so-called diagonal constructions of conformal full field algebras are given in tensor-categorical language.

Modular invariance for conformal full field algebras

Let V^L and V^R be simple vertex operator algebras satisfying certain natural uniqueness-of-vacuum, complete reducibility and cofiniteness conditions and let F be a conformal full field algebra over the tensor product of V^L and V^R. We prove that the q_τ-\bar{q_τ}-traces (natural traces involving q_τ=e^{2πiτ} and \bar{q_τ}=\bar{e^{2πiτ}}) of geometrically modified genus-zero correlation functions for F are convergent in suitable regions and can be extended to doubly periodic functions with periods 1 and τ. We obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for these functions to be modular invariant. In the case that V^L=V^R and F is one of those constructed by the authors in \cite{HK}, we prove that all these functions are modular invariant.
