Learning the Basis: A Kolmogorov-Arnold Network Approach Embedding Green's Function Priors

The Method of Moments (MoM) is constrained by the usage of static, geometry-defined basis functions, such as the Rao-Wilton-Glisson (RWG) basis. This letter reframes electromagnetic modeling around a learnable basis representation rather than solving for the coefficients over a fixed basis. We first show that the RWG basis is essentially a static and piecewise-linear realization of the Kolmogorov-Arnold representation theorem. Inspired by this insight, we propose PhyKAN, a physics-informed Kolmogorov-Arnold Network (KAN) that generalizes RWG into a learnable and adaptive basis family. Derived from the EFIE, PhyKAN integrates a local KAN branch with a global branch embedded with Green's function priors to preserve physical consistency. It is demonstrated that, across canonical geometries, PhyKAN achieves sub-0.01 reconstruction errors as well as accurate, unsupervised radar cross section predictions, offering an interpretable, physics-consistent bridge between classical solvers and modern neural network models for electromagnetic modeling.

New Second-order Convergent Schemes for Solving decoupled FBSDEs

This paper proposes a new second-order symmetric algorithm for solving decoupled forward-backward stochastic differential equations. Inspired by the alternating direction implicit splitting method for partial differential equations, we split the generator into the sum of two functions. In the computation of the value process Y, explicit and implicit schemes are alternately applied to these two generators, while the algorithms from \citep{ZhaoLi2014} are used for the control process Z. We rigorously prove that the two new schemes have second-order convergence rate. The proposed splitting methods show clear advantages for equations whose generator consists of a linear part plus a nonlinear part, as they reduce the number of iterations required for solving implicit schemes, thereby decreasing computational cost while maintaining second-order convergence. Two numerical examples are provided, including the backward stochastic Riccati equation arising in mean-variance hedging. The numerical results verify the theoretical error analysis and demonstrate the advantage of reduced computational cost compared to the algorithm in \citep{ZhaoLi2014}.

Tailoring Neel orders in Layered Topological Antiferromagnets

In the two-dimensional limit, the interplay between Neel order and band topology in van der Waals topological antiferromagnets can give rise to novel quantum phenomena in the quantum anomalous Hall state, including the cascaded quantum phase transition and spin-modulation effect. However, due to the absence of net magnetization in antiferromagnets, probing the energetically degenerate Neel orders has long remained a significant challenge. Inspired by recent advances in realizing the quantum anomalous Hall effect in AlOx-capped layered topological antiferromagnet MnBi2Te4, we demonstrate deterministic control over the Neel order through surface anisotropy engineering enabled by the AlOx capping layer. By tuning the surface anisotropy, we uncover paritydependent symmetry breaking states that manifest as distinct odd-even boundary architectures, including 180 degree domain walls or continuous spin structures. Comparative studies between AlOx-capped and pristine odd-layer MnBi2Te4 flakes using domain-resolved magnetic force microscopy reveal pronounced differences in coercivity and magnetization-reversal dynamics. Notably, an unconventional giant exchange bias, which arises from perpendicular magnetic anisotropy rather than traditional interface pinning mechanisms, is observed for the first time. Our findings establish a pathway for manipulating Neel order through surface modification in A-type antiferromagnets, offering new opportunities for spintronic devices and quantum information technologies.

Calibration procedures for the CHASE/HIS science data

The Hα line is an important optical line in solar observations containing the information from the photosphere to the chromosphere. To study the mechanisms of solar eruptions and the plasma dynamics in the lower atmosphere, the Chinese Hα Solar Explorer (CHASE) was launched into a Sun-synchronous orbit on October 14, 2021. The scientific payload of the CHASE satellite is the Hα Imaging Spectrograph (HIS). The CHASE/HIS acquires, for the first time, seeing-free Hα spectroscopic observations with high spectral and temporal resolutions. It consists of two observational modes. The raster scanning mode provides full-Sun or region-of-interest spectra at Hα (6559.7-6565.9 Å) and Fe I (6567.8-6570.6 Å) wavebands. The continuum imaging mode obtains full-Sun photospheric images at around 6689 Å. In this paper, we present detailed calibration procedures for the CHASE/HIS science data, including the dark-field and flat-field correction, slit image curvature correction, wavelength and intensity calibration, and coordinate transformation. The higher-level data products can be directly used for scientific research.

Deep learning-based UAV detection in the low altitude clutter background

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are widely used due to their low cost and versatility, but they also pose security and privacy threats. Therefore, reliable detection for low-altitude UAVs is an important issue. The strong ground clutter makes the radar echoes from small UAVs submerged in noise, resulting in low radar detection reliability. A low-altitude UAV detection method based on deep contrastive learning is proposed to address the above problems: Concretely, a low-altitude UAV radar echo model under low-altitude clutter interference is first established. Based on the echo components and the UAV Doppler domain identifiable mechanism, a time-frequency transformation method combining ZAM transform and morphological operations is used to suppress the ambiguity problem under clutter. Then feature extraction and fusion method introducing contrast learning is utilized to suppress non-target ground clutter interference. Finally, a detector relying on semantic features is designed for the reliable identification of low-altitude UAVs. The experiments carried out on both real and simulated data confirm that the proposed method can effectively suppress ground clutter and reliably extract recognizable semantic features of UAVs. The proposed method achieves lower false and missing alarms compared with recent state-of-art solutions and improves the detection accuracy by more than 5% for the same signal-to-noise ratio, which effectively improves the detection reliability.

Demand-Side Scheduling Based on Multi-Agent Deep Actor-Critic Learning for Smart Grids

We consider the problem of demand-side energy management, where each household is equipped with a smart meter that is able to schedule home appliances online. The goal is to minimize the overall cost under a real-time pricing scheme. While previous works have introduced centralized approaches in which the scheduling algorithm has full observability, we propose the formulation of a smart grid environment as a Markov game. Each household is a decentralized agent with partial observability, which allows scalability and privacy-preservation in a realistic setting. The grid operator produces a price signal that varies with the energy demand. We propose an extension to a multi-agent, deep actor-critic algorithm to address partial observability and the perceived non-stationarity of the environment from the agent's viewpoint. This algorithm learns a centralized critic that coordinates training of decentralized agents. Our approach thus uses centralized learning but decentralized execution. Simulation results show that our online deep reinforcement learning method can reduce both the peak-to-average ratio of total energy consumed and the cost of electricity for all households based purely on instantaneous observations and a price signal.

Improved Sensing and Positioning via 5G and mmWave radar for Airport Surveillance

This paper explores an integrated approach for improved sensing and positioning with applications in air traffic management (ATM) and in the Advanced Surface Movement Guidance and Control System (A-SMGCS). The integrated approach includes the synergy of 3D Vector Antenna with the novel time-of-arrival and angle-of-arrival estimate methods for accurate positioning, combining the sensing on the sub-6GHz and mmWave spectrum for the enhanced non-cooperative surveillance. For the positioning scope, both uplink and downlink 5G reference signals are investigated and their performance is evaluated. For the non-cooperative sensing scope, a novel 5G-signal-based imaging function is proposed and verified with realistic airport radio-propagation modelling and the AI-based targets tracking-and-motion recognition are investigated. The 5G-based imaging and mmWave radar based detection can be potentially fused to enhance surveillance in the airport. The work is being done within the European-funded project NewSense and it delves into the 5G, Vector Antennas, and mmWave capabilities for future ATM solutions.

Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning for Joint Cooperative Spectrum Sensing and Channel Access in Cognitive UAV Networks

This paper studies the problem of distributed spectrum/channel access for cognitive radio-enabled unmanned aerial vehicles (CUAVs) that overlay upon primary channels. Under the framework of cooperative spectrum sensing and opportunistic transmission, a one-shot optimization problem for channel allocation, aiming to maximize the expected cumulative weighted reward of multiple CUAVs, is formulated. To handle the uncertainty due to the lack of prior knowledge about the primary user activities as well as the lack of the channel-access coordinator, the original problem is cast into a competition and cooperation hybrid multi-agent reinforcement learning (CCH-MARL) problem in the framework of Markov game (MG). Then, a value-iteration-based RL algorithm, which features upper confidence bound-Hoeffding (UCB-H) strategy searching, is proposed by treating each CUAV as an independent learner (IL). To address the curse of dimensionality, the UCB-H strategy is further extended with a double deep Q-network (DDQN). Numerical simulations show that the proposed algorithms are able to efficiently converge to stable strategies, and significantly improve the network performance when compared with the benchmark algorithms such as the vanilla Q-learning and DDQN algorithms.

Non-convex Generalized Nash Games for Energy Efficient Power Allocation and Beamforming in mmWave Networks

Network management is a fundamental ingredient for efficient operation of wireless networks. With increasing bandwidth, number of antennas and number of users, the amount of information required for network management increases significantly. Therefore, distributed network management is a key to efficient operation of future networks. This paper focuses on the problem of distributed joint beamforming control and power allocation in ad-hoc mmWave networks. Over the shared spectrum, a number of multi-input-multi-output links attempt to minimize their supply power by simultaneously finding the locally optimal power allocation and beamformers in a self-organized manner. Our design considers a family of non-convex quality-of-service constraint and utility functions characterized by monotonicity in the strategies of the various users. We propose a two-stage, decentralized optimization scheme, where the adaptation of power levels and beamformer coefficients are iteratively performed by each link. We first prove that given a set of receive beamformers, the power allocation stage converges to an optimal generalized Nash equilibrium of the generalized power allocation game. Then we prove that iterative minimum-mean-square-error adaptation of the receive beamformer results in an overall converging scheme. Several transmit beamforming schemes requiring different levels of information exchange are also compared in the proposed allocation framework. Our simulation results show that allowing each link to optimize its transmit filters using the direct channel results in a near optimum performance with very low computational complexity, even though the problem is highly non-convex.

Spatio-Temporal-Frequency Graph Attention Convolutional Network for Aircraft Recognition Based on Heterogeneous Radar Network

This paper proposes a knowledge-and-data-driven graph neural network-based collaboration learning model for reliable aircraft recognition in a heterogeneous radar network. The aircraft recognizability analysis shows that: (1) the semantic feature of an aircraft is motion patterns driven by the kinetic characteristics, and (2) the grammatical features contained in the radar cross-section (RCS) signals present spatial-temporal-frequency (STF) diversity decided by both the electromagnetic radiation shape and motion pattern of the aircraft. Then a STF graph attention convolutional network (STFGACN) is developed to distill semantic features from the RCS signals received by the heterogeneous radar network. Extensive experiment results verify that the STFGACN outperforms the baseline methods in terms of detection accuracy, and ablation experiments are carried out to further show that the expansion of the information dimension can gain considerable benefits to perform robustly in the low signal-to-noise ratio region.

The CHASE mission is designed to test a newly developed satellite platform and to acquire the spectroscopic observations in the Hα waveband. The Hα Imaging Spectrograph (HIS) is the scientific payload of the CHASE satellite. It consists of two observational modes: raster scanning mode and continuum imaging mode. The continuum imaging mode obtains photospheric images in continuum around 6689 Å with the full width at half maximum of 13.4 Å. The CHASE mission will advance our understanding of the dynamics of solar activity in the photosphere and chromosphere. Decentralized Learning for Channel Allocation in IoT Networks over Unlicensed Bandwidth as a Contextual Multi-player Multi-armed Bandit Game

We study a decentralized channel allocation problem in an ad-hoc Internet of Things network underlaying on the spectrum licensed to a primary cellular network. In the considered network, the impoverished channel sensing/probing capability and computational resource on the IoT devices make them difficult to acquire the detailed Channel State Information (CSI) for the shared multiple channels. In practice, the unknown patterns of the primary users' transmission activities and the time-varying CSI (e.g., due to small-scale fading or device mobility) also cause stochastic changes in the channel quality. Decentralized IoT links are thus expected to learn channel conditions online based on partial observations, while acquiring no information about the channels that they are not operating on. They also have to reach an efficient, collision-free solution of channel allocation with limited coordination. Our study maps this problem into a contextual multi-player, multi-armed bandit game, and proposes a purely decentralized, three-stage policy learning algorithm through trial-and-error. Theoretical analyses shows that the proposed scheme guarantees the IoT links to jointly converge to the social optimal channel allocation with a sub-linear (i.e., polylogarithmic) regret with respect to the operational time. Simulations demonstrate that it strikes a good balance between efficiency and network scalability when compared with the other state-of-the-art decentralized bandit algorithms.

Evaluating Effectiveness of Public Health Intervention Strategies for Mitigating COVID-19 Pandemic

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is an unprecedented global public health challenge. In the United States (US), state governments have implemented various non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs), such as physical distance closure (lockdown), stay-at-home order, mandatory facial mask in public in response to the rapid spread of COVID-19. To evaluate the effectiveness of these NPIs, we propose a nested case-control design with propensity score weighting under the quasi-experiment framework to estimate the average intervention effect on disease transmission across states. We further develop a method to test for factors that moderate intervention effect to assist precision public health intervention. Our method takes account of the underlying dynamics of disease transmission and balance state-level pre-intervention characteristics. We prove that our estimator provides causal intervention effect under assumptions. We apply this method to analyze US COVID-19 incidence cases to estimate the effects of six interventions. We show that lockdown has the largest effect on reducing transmission and reopening bars significantly increase transmission. States with a higher percentage of non-white population are at greater risk of increased $R_t$ associated with reopening bars.

Transmission-and-Distribution Frequency Dynamic Co-Simulation Framework for Distributed Energy Resources Frequency Response

The rapid deployment of distributed energy resources (DERs) in distribution networks has brought challenges to balance the system and stabilize frequency. DERs have the ability to provide frequency regulation; however, existing dynamic frequency simulation tools-which were developed mainly for the transmission system-lack the capability to simulate distribution network dynamics with high penetrations of DERs. Although electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulation tools can simulate distribution network dynamics, the computation efficiency limits their use for large-scale transmission-and-distribution (T&D) simulations. This paper presents an efficient T&D dynamic frequency co-simulation framework for DER frequency response based on the HELICS platform and existing off-the-shelf simulators. The challenge of synchronizing frequency between the transmission network and DERs hosted in the distribution network is approached by detailed modeling of DERs in frequency dynamic models while DER phasor models are also preserved in the distribution networks. Thereby, local voltage constraints can be respected when dispatching the DER power for frequency response. The DER frequency responses (primary and secondary)-are simulated in case studies to validate the proposed framework. Lastly, fault-induced delayed voltage recovery (FIDVR) event of a large system is presented to demonstrate the efficiency and effectiveness of the overall framework.

Parametric Sparse Bayesian Dictionary Learning for Multiple Sources Localization with Propagation Parameters Uncertainty and Nonuniform Noise

Received signal strength (RSS) based source localization method is popular due to its simplicity and low cost. However, this method is highly dependent on the propagation model which is not easy to be captured in practice. Moreover, most existing works only consider the single source and the identical measurement noise scenario, while in practice multiple co-channel sources may transmit simultaneously, and the measurement noise tends to be nonuniform. In this paper, we study the multiple co-channel sources localization (MSL) problem under unknown nonuniform noise, while jointly estimating the parametric propagation model. Specifically, we model the MSL problem as being parameterized by the unknown source locations and propagation parameters, and then reformulate it as a joint parametric sparsifying dictionary learning (PSDL) and sparse signal recovery (SSR) problem which is solved under the framework of sparse Bayesian learning with iterative parametric dictionary approximation. Furthermore, multiple snapshot measurements are utilized to improve the localization accuracy, and the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) is derived to analyze the theoretical estimation error bound. Comparing with the state-of-the-art sparsity-based MSL algorithms as well as CRLB, extensive simulations show the importance of jointly inferring the propagation parameters, and highlight the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed method.

A Survey on Applications of Model-Free Strategy Learning in Cognitive Wireless Networks

Model-free learning has been considered as an efficient tool for designing control mechanisms when the model of the system environment or the interaction between the decision-making entities is not available as a-priori knowledge. With model-free learning, the decision-making entities adapt their behaviors based on the reinforcement from their interaction with the environment and are able to (implicitly) build the understanding of the system through trial-and-error mechanisms. Such characteristics of model-free learning is highly in accordance with the requirement of cognition-based intelligence for devices in cognitive wireless networks. Recently, model-free learning has been considered as one key implementation approach to adaptive, self-organized network control in cognitive wireless networks. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive survey on the applications of the state-of-the-art model-free learning mechanisms in cognitive wireless networks. According to the system models that those applications are based on, a systematic overview of the learning algorithms in the domains of single-agent system, multi-agent systems and multi-player games is provided. Furthermore, the applications of model-free learning to various problems in cognitive wireless networks are discussed with the focus on how the learning mechanisms help to provide the solutions to these problems and improve the network performance over the existing model-based, non-adaptive methods. Finally, a broad

Cluster Content Caching: An Energy-Efficient Approach to Improve Quality of Service in Cloud Radio Access Networks

In cloud radio access networks (C-RANs), a substantial amount of data must be exchanged in both backhaul and fronthaul links, which causes high power consumption and poor quality of service (QoS) experience for real-time services. To solve this problem, a cluster content caching structure is proposed in this paper, which takes full advantage of distributed caching and centralized signal processing. In particular, redundant traffic on the backhaul can be reduced because the cluster content cache provides a part of required content objects for remote radio heads (RRHs) connected to a common edge cloud. Tractable expressions for both effective capacity and energy efficiency performance are derived, which show that the proposed structure can improve QoS guarantees with a lower power cost of local storage. Furthermore, to fully explore the potential of the proposed cluster content caching structure, the joint design of resource allocation and RRH association is optimized, and two distributed algorithms are accordingly proposed. Simulation results verify the accuracy of the analytical results and show the performance gains achieved by cluster content caching in C-RANs.

Fog computing based radio access network is a promising paradigm for the fifth generation wireless communication system to provide high spectral and energy efficiency. With the help of the new designed fog computing based access points (F-APs), the user-centric objectives can be achieved through the adaptive technique and will relieve the load of fronthaul and alleviate the burden of base band unit pool. In this paper, we derive the coverage probability and ergodic rate for both F-AP users and device-to-device users by taking into account the different nodes locations, cache sizes as well as user access modes. Particularly, the stochastic geometry tool is used to derive expressions for above performance metrics. Simulation results validate the accuracy of our analysis and we obtain interesting trade-offs that depend on the effect of the cache size, user node density, and the quality of service constrains on the different performance metrics.

Wireless-Powered Cooperative Communications: Power-Splitting Relaying with Energy Accumulation

A harvest-use-store power splitting (PS) relaying strategy with distributed beamforming is proposed for wirelesspowered multi-relay cooperative networks in this paper. Different from the conventional battery-free PS relaying strategy, harvested energy is prioritized to power information relaying while the remainder is accumulated and stored for future usage with the help of a battery in the proposed strategy, which supports an efficient utilization of harvested energy. However, PS affects throughput at subsequent time slots due to the battery operations including the charging and discharging. To this end, PS and battery operations are coupled with distributed beamforming. A throughput optimization problem to incorporate these coupled operations is formulated though it is intractable. To address the intractability of the optimization,a layered optimization method is proposed to achieve the optimal joint PS and battery operation design with non-causal channel state information (CSI), in which the PS and the battery operation can be analyzed in a decomposed manner. Then, a general case with causal CSI is considered, where the proposed layered optimization method is extended by utilizing the statistical properties of CSI. To reach a better tradeoff between performance and complexity, a greedy method that requires no information about subsequent time slots is proposed. Simulation results reveal the upper and lower bound on performance of the proposed strategy, which are reached by the layered optimization method with non-causal CSI and the greedy method, respectively. Moreover, the proposed strategy outperforms the conventional PS-based relaying without energy accumulation and time switching-based relaying strategy.

An SMDP-based Resource Management Scheme for Distributed Cloud Systems

In this paper, the resource management problem in geographically distributed cloud systems is considered. The Follow Me Cloud concept which enables service migration across federated data centers (DCs) is adopted. Therefore, there are two types of service requests to the DC, i.e., new requests (NRs) initiated in the local service area and migration requests (MRs) generated when mobile users move across service areas. A novel resource management scheme is proposed to help the resource manager decide whether to accept the service requests (NRs or MRs) or not and determine how much resources should be allocated to each service (if accepted). The optimization objective is to maximize the average system reward and keep the rejection probability of service requests under a certain threshold. Numerical results indicate that the proposed scheme can significantly improve the overall system utility as well as the user experience compared with other resource management schemes.

Divisible Load Scheduling in Mobile Grid based on Stackelberg Pricing Game

Nowadays, it has become feasible to use mobile nodes as contributing entities in computing systems. In this paper, we consider a computational grid in which the mobile devices can share their idle resources to realize parallel processing. The overall computing task can be arbitrarily partitioned into multiple subtasks to be distributed to mobile resource providers (RPs). In this process, the computation load scheduling problem is highlighted. Based on the optimization objective, i.e., minimizing the task makespan, a buyer-seller model in which the task sponsor can inspire the SPs to share their computing resources by paying certain profits, is proposed. The Stackelberg Pricing Game (SPG) is employed to obtain the optimal price and shared resource amount of each SP. Finally, we evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm by system simulation and the results indicate that the SPG-based load scheduling algorithm can significantly improve the time gain in mobile grid systems.

Radio Resource Allocation in LTE-Advanced Cellular Networks with M2M Communications

Machine-to-machine (M2M) communications are expected to provide ubiquitous connectivity between machines without the need of human intervention. To support such a large number of autonomous devices, the M2M system architecture needs to be extremely power and spectrally efficient. This article thus briefly reviews the features of M2M services in the third generation (3G) long-term evolution and its advancement (LTE-Advanced) networks. Architectural enhancements are then presented for supporting M2M services in LTE-Advanced cellular networks. To increase spectral efficiency, the same spectrum is expected to be utilized for human-to-human (H2H) communications as well as M2M communications. We therefore present various radio resource allocation schemes and quantify their utility in LTE-Advanced cellular networks. System-level simulation results are provided to validate the performance effectiveness of M2M communications in LTE-Advanced cellular networks.

A Full-Diversity Beamforming Scheme in Two-Way Amplified-and-Forward Relay Systems

Consider a simple two-way relaying channel where two single-antenna sources exchange information via a multiple-antenna relay. To such a scenario, all the existing works which can achieve full diversity order are based on the antenna/relay selection, where the difficulty to design the beamforming lies in the fact that a single beamformer needs to serve two destinations. In this paper, we propose a new full-diversity beamforming scheme which ensures that the relay signals are coherently combined at both destinations. Both analytical and numerical results are provided to demonstrate that this proposed scheme can outperform the existing one based on the antenna selection.

Channel Estimation for Two-Way Relay Networks in the Presence of Synchronization Errors

This paper investigates pilot-aided channel estimation for two-way relay networks (TWRNs) in the presence of synchronization errors between the two sources. The unpredictable synchronization error leads to time domain offset and signal arriving order (SAO) ambiguity when two signals sent from two sources are superimposed at the relay. A two-step channel estimation algorithm is first proposed, in which the linear minimum mean-square-error (LMMSE) estimator is used to obtain initial channel estimates based on pilot symbols and a linear minimum error probability (LMEP) estimator is then developed to update these estimates. Optimal training sequences and power allocation at the relay are designed to further improve the performance for LMMSE based initial channel estimation. To tackle the SAO ambiguity problem, the generalized likelihood ratio testing (GLRT) method is applied and an upper bound on the SAO detection error probability is derived. By using the SAO information, a scaled LMEP estimation algorithm is proposed to compensate the performance degradation caused by SAO detection error. Simulation results show that the proposed estimation algorithms can effectively mitigate the negative effects caused by asynchronous transmissions in TWRNs, thus significantly outperforming the existing channel estimation algorithms.

Energy-Efficient Resource Assignment and Power Allocation in Heterogeneous Cloud Radio Access Networks

Taking full advantages of both heterogeneous networks (HetNets) and cloud access radio access networks (CRANs), heterogeneous cloud radio access networks (H-CRANs) are presented to enhance both the spectral and energy efficiencies, where remote radio heads (RRHs) are mainly used to provide high data rates for users with high quality of service (QoS) requirements, while the high power node (HPN) is deployed to guarantee the seamless coverage and serve users with low QoS requirements. To mitigate the inter-tier interference and improve EE performances in H-CRANs, characterizing user association with RRH/HPN is considered in this paper, and the traditional soft fractional frequency reuse (S-FFR) is enhanced. Based on the RRH/HPN association constraint and the enhanced S-FFR, an energy-efficient optimization problem with the resource assignment and power allocation for the orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) based H-CRANs is formulated as a non-convex objective function. To deal with the non-convexity, an equivalent convex feasibility problem is reformulated, and closedform expressions for the energy-efficient resource allocation solution to jointly allocate the resource block and transmit power are derived by the Lagrange dual decomposition method. Simulation results confirm that the H-CRAN architecture and the corresponding resource allocation solution can enhance the energy efficiency significantly.

Power allocation with stackelberg game in femtocell networks: a self-learning approach

This paper investigates the energy-efficient power allocation for a two-tier, underlaid femtocell network. The behaviors of the Macrocell Base Station (MBS) and the Femtocell Users (FUs) are modeled hierarchically as a Stackelberg game. The MBS guarantees its own QoS requirement by charging the FUs individually according to the cross-tier interference, and the FUs responds by controlling the local transmit power non-cooperatively. Due to the limit of information exchange in intra- and inter-tiers, a self-learning based strategy-updating mechanism is proposed for each user to learn the equilibrium strategies. In the same Stackelberg-game framework, two different scenarios based on the continuous and discrete power profiles for the FUs are studied, respectively. The self-learning schemes in the two scenarios are designed based on the local best response. By studying the properties of the proposed game in the two situations, the convergence property of the learning schemes is provided. The simulation results are provided to support the theoretical finding in different situations of the proposed game, and the efficiency of the learning schemes is validated.

Restoring Pristine Bi2Se3 Surface with an Effective Se Decapping Process

High quality thin films of topological insulators (TI) such as Bi2Se3 have been successfully synthesized by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). Although the surface of MBE films can be protected by capping with inert materials such as amorphous Se, restoring an atomically clean pristine surface after decapping has never been demonstrated, which prevents in-depth investigations of the intrinsic properties of TI thin films with ex-situ tools. Using high resolution scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS), we demonstrate a simple and highly reproducible Se decapping method that allows recovery of the pristine surface of extremely high quality Bi2Se3 thin films grown and capped with Se in a separate MBE system then exposed to atmosphere during transfer into the STM system. The crucial step of our decapping process is the removal of the surface contaminants on top of amorphous Se before thermal desorption of Se at a mild temperature (~210 °C). This effective Se decapping process opens up the possibility of ex-situ characterizations of pristine surfaces of interesting selenide materials and beyond using cutting-edge techniques.

Room-temperature multiferroic hexagonal LuFeO$_3$ films

The crystal and magnetic structures of single-crystalline hexagonal LuFeO$_3$ films have been studied using x-ray, electron and neutron diffraction methods. The polar structure of these films are found to persist up to 1050 K; and the switchability of the polar behavior is observed at room temperature, indicating ferroelectricity. An antiferromagnetic order was shown to occur below 440 K, followed by a spin reorientation resulting in a weak ferromagnetic order below 130 K. This observation of coexisting multiple ferroic orders demonstrates that hexagonal LuFeO$_3$ films are room-temperature multiferroics.
