Small value probabilities for supercritical branching processes with immigration

We consider a supercritical Galton-Watson branching process with immigration. It is well known that under suitable conditions on the offspring and immigration distributions, there is a finite, strictly positive limit W{\mathcal{W}} for the normalized population size. Small value probabilities for W{\mathcal{W}} are obtained. Precise effects of the balance between offspring and immigration distributions are characterized.

Probabilities of competing binomial random variables

Suppose you and your friend both do nn tosses of an unfair coin with probability of heads equal to αα. What is the behavior of the probability that you obtain at least dd more heads than your friend if you make rr additional tosses? We obtain asymptotic and monotonicity/convexity properties for this competing probability as a function of nn, and demonstrate surprising phase transition phenomenons as parameters d,r d, r and αα vary. Our main tools are integral representations based on Fourier analysis.

Small deviations for a family of smooth Gaussian processes

We study the small deviation probabilities of a family of very smooth self-similar Gaussian processes. The canonical process from the family has the same scaling property as standard Brownian motion and plays an important role in the study of zeros of random polynomials. Our estimates are based on the entropy method, discovered in Kuelbs and Li (1992) and developed further in Li and Linde (1999), Gao (2004), and Aurzada et al. (2009). While there are several ways to obtain the result w.r.t. the L2L_2 norm, the main contribution of this paper concerns the result w.r.t. the supremum norm. In this connection, we develop a tool that allows to translate upper estimates for the entropy of an operator mapping into L2[0,1]L_2[0,1] by those of the operator mapping into C[0,1]C[0,1], if the image of the operator is in fact a Hölder space. The results are further applied to the entropy of function classes, generalizing results of Gao et al. (2010).

Large deviations for local times and intersection local times of fractional Brownian motions and Riemann-Liouville processes

In this paper we prove exact forms of large deviations for local times and intersection local times of fractional Brownian motions and Riemann-Liouville processes. We also show that a fractional Brownian motion and the related Riemann-Liouville process behave like constant multiples of each other with regard to large deviations for their local and intersection local times. As a consequence of our large deviation estimates, we derive laws of iterated logarithm for the corresponding local times. The key points of our methods: (1) logarithmic superadditivity of a normalized sequence of moments of exponentially randomized local time of a fractional Brownian motion; (2) logarithmic subadditivity of a normalized sequence of moments of exponentially randomized intersection local time of Riemann-Liouville processes; (3) comparison of local and intersection local times based on embedding of a part of a fractional Brownian motion into the reproducing kernel Hilbert space of the Riemann-Liouville process.
