Spin-charge separation and unconventional superconductivity in \textit{t}-\textit{J} model on honeycomb lattice

The physical nature of doped Mott-insulator has been intensively studied for more than three decades. It is well known that the single band Hubbard model or $t$-$J$ model on the bipartite lattice is the simplest model to describe a doped Mott insulator. Unfortunately, the key mechanism of superconductivity in these toy models is still under debate. In this paper, we propose a new mechanism for the $d+id$-wave superconductivity (SC) that occurs in the small-doping region of the honeycomb lattice $t$-$J$ model based on the Grassmann tensor product state numerical simulation and spin-charge separation formulation. Moreover, in the presence of anti-ferromagnetic order, a continuum effective field theory for holons is developed near half-filling. It reveals the competition between repulsive and attractive holon interactions induced by spinon fluctuations and gauge fluctuations, respectively. At a large value of $t/J$, the repulsive interaction dominates, leading to the non-Fermi liquid like behavior; while in a moderate range of $t/J$, the attractive interaction dominates, leading to the SC order. Possible experimental detection of spin-charge separation phenomena is also discussed.

Chiral SO(4) spin-valley density wave and degenerate topological superconductivity in magic-angle-twisted bilayer-graphene

Starting from a realistic extended Hubbard model for a $p_{x,y}$-orbital tight-binding model on the Honeycomb lattice, we perform a thorough investigation on the possible electron instabilities in the MA-TBG near the van Hove (VH) dopings. Here we focus on the interplay between the approximate SU(2)$\times$SU(2) symmetry and the $D_3$ symmetry, which leads to intriguing quantum states relevant to recent experiments, as revealed by our systematic RPA based calculations followed by a succeeding mean-field energy minimization for the ground state energy. At the SU(2)$\times$SU(2) symmetric point, the degenerate inter-valley SDW and VDW are mixed into a new state of matter dubbed as the chiral SO(4) spin-valley DW. This state simultaneously hosts three 4-component vectorial spin-valley DW orders with each adopting one wave vector, and the polarization directions of the three DW orders are mutually perpendicular to one another. %in the $\mathbb{R}^4$ space. In the presence of a tiny inter-valley exchange interaction with coefficient $J_H\to 0^{-}$ which breaks the SU(2)$\times$SU(2) symmetry, a pure chiral SDW state is obtained. In the case of $J_H\to 0^{+}$, a nematic VDW+SDW state emerges which possesses a stripy distribution of the charge density, consistent with the recent STM observations. On the aspect of SC, while the triplet $p+ip$ and singlet $d+id$ topological SCs are degenerate at $J_H=0$ near the VH dopings, the former (latter) is favored for $J_H\to 0^{-}$ ($J_H\to 0^{+}$). In addition, the two asymmetric doping-dependent behaviors of the obtained pairing phase diagram are well consistent with experiments.

Cooper instability and superconductivity on the Penrose lattice

Bulk superconductivity (SC) has recently been observed in the Al-Zn-Mg quasicrystal (QC). To settle several fundamental issues of the SC on the QC, we use an attractive Hubbard model to perform a systematic study on the Penrose lattice. The first issue is the Cooper instability of the QC, i.e., no Fermi surface under an infinitesimal attractive interaction. Starting from the two-electron problem outside the filled Fermi-sea, we analytically prove that an infinitesimal Hubbard attraction can lead to the Cooper instability as long as the density of state is nonzero at the Fermi level, which provides the basis of the SC on the QC. Our numerical results yield that the Cooper pairing always takes place between the two time-reversal states, satisfying the Anderson's theorem. On this theorem, we perform a mean-field (MF) study at both zero and finite temperatures. The MF study also shows that an arbitrarily weak attraction can lead to the pairing order, with the resulted pairing state being well described by the BCS theory and the thermal dynamic behaviors being well consistent with experimental results. The second issue is about the superfluid density on the QC without translational symmetry. It's clarified that although the normal state of the system locates at the critical point of the metal-insulator transition, the pairing state exhibits real SC, carrying finite superfluid density that can be verified by the Meissner effect, consistent with experiment also. These revealed properties of the SC on the Penrose lattice are universal for all QCs.

Gapless quantum spin liquid and global phase diagram of the spin-1/2 $J_1$-$J_2$ square antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model

The nature of the zero-temperature phase diagram of the spin-$1/2$ $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg model on a square lattice has been debated in the past three decades, which may hold the key to understand high temperature superconductivity. By using the state-of-the-art tensor network method, specifically, the finite projected entangled pair state (PEPS) algorithm, to simulate the global phase diagram the $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg model up to $24\times 24$ sites, we provide very solid evidences to show that the nature of the intermediate nonmagnetic phase is a gapless quantum spin liquid (QSL), whose spin-spin and dimer-dimer correlations both decay with a power law behavior. There also exists a valence-bond solid (VBS) phase in a very narrow region $0.56\lesssim J_2/J_1\leq0.61$ before the system enters the well known collinear antiferromagnetic phase. The physical nature of the discovered gapless QSL and potential experimental implications are also addressed. We stress that we make the first detailed comparison between the results of PEPS and the well-established density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method through one-to-one direct benchmark for small system sizes, and thus give rise to a very solid PEPS calculation beyond DMRG. Our numerical evidences explicitly demonstrate the huge power of PEPS for precisely capturing long-range physcis for highly frustrated systems, and also demonstrate the finite PEPS method is a very powerful approach to study strongly corrleated quantum many-body problems.

Kohn-Luttinger mechanism driven exotic topological superconductivity on the Penrose lattice

The Kohn-Luttinger mechanism for unconventional superconductivity (SC) driven by weak repulsive electron-electron interactions on a periodic lattice is generalized to the quasicrystal (QC) via a real-space perturbative approach. The repulsive Hubbard model on the Penrose lattice is studied as an example, on which a classification of the pairing symmetries is performed and a pairing phase diagram is obtained. Two remarkable properties of these pairing states are revealed, due to the combination of the presence of the point-group symmetry and the lack of translation symmetry on this lattice. Firstly, the spin and spacial angular momenta of a Cooper pair is de-correlated: for each pairing symmetry, both spin-singlet and spin-triplet pairings are possible even in the weak-pairing limit. Secondly, the pairing states belonging to the 2D irreducible representations of the $D_5$ point group can be time-reversal-symmetry-breaking topological SCs carrying spontaneous bulk super current and spontaneous vortices. These two remarkable properties are general for the SCs on all QCs, and are rare on periodic lattices. Our work starts the new area of unconventional SCs driven by repulsive interactions on the QC.

t-J model on the effective brick-wall lattice for the recently discovered high-temperature superconductor Ba$_2$CuO$_{3+δ}$

Layered copper oxides have highest superconducting transition temperatures at ambient pressure. Its mechanism remains a grand challenge in condensed matter physics. The essential physics lying in 2-dimensional copper-oxygen layers is well described by a single band Hubbard model or its strong coupling limit t-J model in 2-dimensional square lattice. Recently discovered high temperature superconductor Ba$_2$CuO$_{3+δ}$ with $δ\sim 0.2$ has different crystal structure with large portion of in-plane oxygen vacancies. We observe that an oxygen vacancy breaks the bond of its two neighboring copper atoms, and propose ordered vacancies in Ba$_2$CuO$_{3+δ}$ lead to extended t-J model on an effective brick-wall lattice. For the nearest neighbor hopping, the brick-wall model can be mapped onto t-J model on honeycomb lattice. Our theory explains the superconductivity of Ba$_2$CuO$_{3+δ}$ at high charge carrier density, and predict a time reversal symmetry broken pairing state.

A topological phase transition on the edge of the 2d $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological order

The unified mathematical theory of gapped and gapless edges of 2d topological orders was developed by two of the authors. It provides a powerful tool to study pure edge topological phase transitions on the edges of 2d topological orders (without altering the bulks). In particular, it implies that the critical points are described by enriched fusion categories. In this work, we illustrate this idea in a concrete example: the 2d $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological order. In particular, we construct an enriched fusion category, which describes a gappable non-chiral gapless edge of the 2d $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological order; then use an explicit lattice model construction to realize the critical point and, at the same time, all the ingredients of this enriched fusion category.

Kondo screening of Andreev bound states in an N-QD-S system

Motivated by experimental observation of the Kondo-enhanced Andreev transport [R. S. Deacon \textit{et al.}, PRB \textbf{81}, 121308(R) (2010)] in a hybrid normal metal-quantum dot-superconductor (N-QD-S) device, we theoretically study the Kondo effect in such a device and clarify the different roles played by the normal and superconducting leads. Due to the Andreev reflection in a QD-S system, a pair of Andreev energy levels form in the superconducting gap, which is able to carry the magnetic moment if the ground state of the QD is a magnetic doublet. In this sense, the Andreev energy levels play a role of effective impurity levels. When the normal lead is coupled to the QD-S system, on the one hand, the Andreev energy levels broaden to form the so-called Andreev bound states (ABSs), on the other hand, it can screen the magnetic moment of the ABSs. By tuning the couplings between the QD and the normal (superconducting) leads, the ABSs can simulate the Kondo, mixed-valence, and even empty orbit regimes of the usual single-impurity Anderson model. The above picture is confirmed by the Green's function calculation of the hybrid N-QD-S Anderson model and is also able to explain qualitatively experimental phenomena observed by Deacon \textit{et al.}. These results can further stimulate related experimental study in the N-QD-S systems.

Variable range hopping theory for the nodal gap in strongly underdoped cuprate Bi$_2$Sr$_{2-x}$La$_x$CuO$_{6+δ}$

Recent angle resolved photoemission spectrascope (ARPES) experiments on strongly underdoped Bi$_2$Sr$_{2-x}$La$_x$CuO$_{6+δ}$ cuprates have reported an unusual gap in the nodal direction. Transport experiments on these cuprates found variable range hopping behavior observed. These cuprates have both electron and hole doping which has led to proposals that this cuprate is analogous to a partially compensated semiconductors. The nodal gap then corresponds to the Efros-Schklovskii(ES) gap in such semiconductors. We calculate the doping dependence and temperature dependence of a ES gap model and find support for an Efros-Schklovskii model.

Cooper Pairing in Insulating Valence Band in Fe-Based Superconductors

Conventional Cooper pairing arises from attractive interaction of electrons in the metallic bands. Recent experiment on Co-doped LiFeAs shows superconductivity in the insulating valence band, which is evolved from a metallic hole band upon doping. Here we examine this phenomenon by studying superconductivity in a three-orbital Hamiltonian relevant to the doped LiFeAs. We show explicitly that Cooper pairing of the insulating hole band requires a finite pairing interaction strength. For strong coupling, the superconductivity in the hole band is robust against the sink of the hole band below the Fermi level. Our theory predicts a substantial upward shift of the chemical potential in the superconducting transition for Co-doped LiFeAs.

Fano resonance in a normal metal/ferromagnet-quantum dot-superconductor device

We investigate theoretically the Andreev transport through a quantum dot strongly coupled with a normal metal/ferromagnet and a superconductor (N/F-QD-S), in which the interplay between the Kondo resonance and the Andreev bound states (ABSs) has not been clearly clarified yet. Here we show that the interference between the Kondo resonance and the ABSs modifies seriously the lineshape of the Kondo resonance, which manifests as a Fano resonance. The ferromagnetic lead with spin-polarization induces an effective field, which leads to splitting both of the Kondo resonance and the ABSs. The spin-polarization together with the magnetic field applied provides an alternative way to tune the lineshape of the Kondo resonances, which is dependent of the relative positions of the Kondo resonance and of the ABSs. These results indicate that the interplay between the Kondo resonance and the ABSs can significantly affect the Andreev transport, which could be tested by experiments.

Dynamics of Order Parameter in Photoexcited Peierls Chain

The photoexcited dynamics of order parameter in Peierls chain is investigated by using a microscopic quantum theory in the limit where the hot electrons may establish themselves into a quasi-equilibrium state described by an effective temperature. The optical phonon mode responsible for the Peierls instability is coupled to the electron subsystem, and its dynamic equation is derived in terms of the density matrix technique. Recovery dynamics of the order parameter is obtained, which reveals a number of interesting features including the change of oscillation frequency and amplitude at phase transition temperature and the photo-induced switching of order parameter.

Magnetization Dynamics driven by Non-equilibrium Spin-Orbit Coupled Electron Gas

The dynamics of magnetization coupled to an electron gas via s-d exchange interaction is investigated by using density matrix technique. Our theory shows that non-equilibrium spin accumulation induces a spin torque and the electron bath leads to a damping of the magnetization. For the two-dimensional magnetization thin film coupled to the electron gas with Rashba spin-orbit coupling, the result for the spin-orbit torques is consistent with the previous semi-classical theory. Our theory predicts a damping of the magnetization, which is absent in the semi-classical theory. The magnitude of the damping due to the electron bath is comparable to the intrinsic Gilbert damping and may be important in describing the magnetization dynamics of the system.

Theory for charge and orbital density-wave states in manganite La$_{0.5}$Sr$_{1.5}$MnO$_4$

We investigate the high temperature phase of layered manganites, and demonstrate that the charge-orbital phase transition without magnetic order in La$_{0.5}$Sr$_{1.5}$MnO$_4$ can be understood in terms of the density wave instability. The orbital ordering is found to be induced by the nesting between segments of Fermi surface with different orbital characters. The simultaneous charge and orbital orderings are elaborated with a mean field theory. The ordered orbitals are shown to be $d_{x^2-y^2} \pm d_{3z^2-r^2}$.

Edge superconducting state in attractive U Kane-Mele-Hubbard model

We theoretically investigate the phase transition from topological insulator (TI) to superconductor in the attractive U Kane-Mele-Hubbard model with self-consistent mean field method. We demonstrate the existence of edge superconducting state (ESS), in which the bulk is still an insulator and the superconductivity only appears near the edges. The ESS results from the special energy dispersion of TI, and is a general property of the superconductivity in TI. The phase transition in this model essentially consists of two steps. When the attractive U becomes nonzero, ESS appears immediately. After the attractive U exceeds a critical value $U_c$, the whole system becomes a superconductor. The effective model of the ESS has also been discussed and we believe that the conception of ESS can be realized in atomic optical lattice system.

Enhanced Josephson tunneling between high temperature superconductors through a normal pseudogap underdoped cuprate with a finite energy cooperon

The Josephson coupling between optimally cuprate superconductors separated by a spacer with a finite energy cooperon excitation which contributes to the Josephson coupling strength, is examined. For an underdoped cuprate barrier in its normal state, the YRZ model gives a good description of the temperature dependent enhanced Josephson coupling. A detailed examination of origin of the enhancement shows a significant contribution from the cooperon excitation which is comparable to that from nodal quasiparticles.

Field-induced p-wave Superconductivity in Mesoscopic Systems

By using Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) equations, we study superconducting (SC) states in a quasi 2-dimensional system of radius $R$. It is shown that no vortices exist in s-wave SC samples with $R<R_\text{c}\simξ(0)$, the T=0 coherence length. We predict that chiral p-wave states exhibit superconductivity for $R<R_\text{c}$ only in the presence of a vortex with opposite chirality. This {\it induced} SC phase is a consequence of non-zero chirality of the pairing order parameter and implies the presence of chiral edge currents. Our study may be applied to sharply probing the pairing symmetry of unconventional superconductors.

Interlayer couplings and the coexistence of antiferromagnetic and d-wave pairing order in multilayer cuprates

A more extended low density region of coexisting uniform antiferromagnetism and d-wave superconductivity has been reported in multilayer cuprates, when compared to single or bilayer cuprates. This coexistence could be due to the enhanced screening of random potential modulations in inner layers or to the interlayer Heisenberg and Josephson couplings. A theoretical analysis using a renormalized mean field theory, favors the former explanation. The potential for an improved determination of the antiferromagnetic and superconducting order parameters in an ideal single layer from zero field NMR and infrared Josephson plasma resonances in multilayer cuprates is discussed.

Zn-impurity effect and interplay of $s_{\pm}$- and $s_{++}$-pairings in Fe-based superconductors

We report theoretical and experimental studies of the effect of Zn-impurity in Fe-based superconductors. Zn-impurity is expected to severely suppress sign reversed s$_\pm$ wave pairing. The experimentally observed suppression of T$_c$ under Zn-doping strongly depends on the materials and the charge carrier contents, which suggests competition of $s_{++}$ and $s_{\pm}$ pairings in Fe-base superconductors. We study a model incorporating both $s_{++}$ and $s_{\pm}$ pairing couplings by using Bogoliubov de-Gennes equation, and show that the Zn-impurity strongly suppresses $s_{\pm}$ pairing and may induce a transition from $s_{\pm}$ to $s_{++}$-wave. Our theory is consistent with various experiments on the impurity effect. We present new experimental data on the Zn-doping SmFe$_{1-x}$Zn$_x$AsO$_{0.9}$F$_{0.1}$ of T$_c=$ 50K, in further support of our proposal.

Superconducting proximity effect to the block antiferromagnetism in K$_{y}$Fe$_{2-x}$Se$_{2}$

Recent discovery of superconducting (SC) ternary iron selenides has block antiferromagentic (AFM) long range order. Many experiments show possible mesoscopic phase separation of the superconductivity and antiferromagnetism, while the neutron experiment reveals a sizable suppression of magnetic moment due to the superconductivity indicating a possible phase coexistence. Here we propose that the observed suppression of the magnetic moment may be explained due to the proximity effect within a phase separation scenario. We use a two-orbital model to study the proximity effect on a layer of block AFM state induced by neighboring SC layers via an interlayer tunneling mechanism. We argue that the proximity effect in ternary Fe-selenides should be large because of the large interlayer coupling and weak electron correlation. The result of our mean field theory is compared with the neutron experiments semi-quantitatively. The suppression of the magnetic moment due to the SC proximity effect is found to be more pronounced in the d-wave superconductivity and may be enhanced by the frustrated structure of the block AFM state.

Theory for superconductivity in (Tl,K)Fe$_x$Se$_2$ as a doped Mott insulator

Possible superconductivity in recently discovered (Tl,K)Fe$_x$Se$_2$ compounds is studied from the viewpoint of doped Mott insulator. The Mott insulating phase is examined to be preferred in the parent compound at $x=1.5$ due to the presence of Fe vacancies. Partial filling of vacancies at the Fe-sites introduces electron carriers and leads to electron doped superconductivity. By using a two-orbital Hubbard model in the strong coupling limit, we find that the s-wave pairing is more favorable at small Hund's coupling, and d$_{x^2-y^2}$ wave pairing is more favorable at large Hund's coupling.

Anderson Impurity in Helical Metal

We use a trial wave function to study the spin-1/2 Kondo effect of a helical metal on the surface of a three-dimensional topological insulator. While the impurity spin is quenched by conduction electrons, the spin-spin correlation of the conduction electron and impurity is strongly anisotropic in both spin and spatial spaces. As a result of strong spin-orbit coupling, the out-of-plane component of the impurity spin is found to be fully screened by the orbital angular momentum of the conduction electrons.

Andreev and Single Particle Tunneling Spectroscopies in Underdoped Cuprates

We study tunneling spectroscopy between a normal metal and underdoped cuprate superconductor modeled by a phenomenological theory in which the pseudogap is a precursor to the undoped Mott insulator. In the transparent tunneling limit, the spectra show a small energy gap associated with Andreev reflection. In the Giaever limit, the spectra show a large energy gap associated with single particle tunneling. Our theory semi-quantitatively describes the two gap behavior observed in tunneling experiments.

We study mesoscopic spin Hall effect on the surface of topological insulator with a step-function potential. Possible pi-phase shift at interface of two pnictides with antiphase s-wave pairing

We examine the nature of Josephson junction between two identical Fe-pnictides with anti-phase s-wave pairing. pi-phase shift is found if the junction barrier is thick and the two Fe-pnictides are oriented in certain directions relative to the interface. Our theory provides a possible explanation for the observed half integer flux quantum transitions in a niobium/polycrystal NdFeAsO loop, and attributes the pi-phase shift to intergrain junctions of Fe-pnictides.

Nature of Stripes in the Generalized t-J Model Applied to The Cuprate Superconductors

Recent transport properties on the stripe phase in La$_{\text{1.875}}$Ba$_{\text{01.25}}$CuO$_{\text{4}}$ by Li \textit{et al.} found 2-dimensional superconductivity over a wide temperature range including a Berezinski-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition at a temperature T=16K, with 3-dimensional superconducting (SC) ordering only at T=4K. These results contradict the long standing belief that the onset of superconductivity is suppressed by stripe ordering and suggest coexistence of stripe and SC phases. The lack of 3-D superconducting order above T=4K requires an antiphase ordering in the SC state to suppress the interlayer Josephson coupling as proposed by Berg \textit{et al.}. Here we use a renormalized mean field theory for a generalized t-J model to examine in detail the energetics of the spin and charge stripe ordered SC states including possible antiphase domains in the SC order. We find that the energies of these modulated states are very close to each other and that the anisotropy present in the low temperature tetragonal crystal structure favors stripe resonating valence bond states. The stripe antiphase SC states are found to have energies very close, but always above, the ground state energy which suggests additional physical effects are responsible for their stability.

On the Origin of the Checkerboard Pattern in Scanning Tunneling Microscopy Maps of Underdoped Cuprate Superconductors

The checkerboard pattern in the differential conductance maps on underdoped cuprates appears when the STM is placed above the O-sites in the outermost CuO$_{\text{2}}$-plane. In this position the interference between tunneling paths through the apical ions above the neighboring Cu-sites leads to an asymmetric weighting of final states in the two antinodal regions of ${\boldsymbol{k}}$-space. The form of the asymmetry in the differential conductance spectra in the checkerboard pattern favors asymmetry in the localization length rather than a nematic displacement as the underlying origin.
