Operator systems for tolerance relations on finite sets

We study the duals of a certain class of finite-dimensional operator systems, namely the class of operator systems associated to tolerance relations on finite sets or equivalently the class of operator systems that are associated with graphs. In the case where the graphs associated with these operator systems are chordal we are able to find concrete realizations of their duals as sitting inside of finite-dimensional $C^*$-algebras. We then use these concrete realizations to compute the $C^*$-envelopes, propagation numbers and extremal rays of these duals in the chordal case. Finally, we exemplify our results by applying them to operator systems of band matrices.

Gromov-Hausdorff convergence of state spaces for spectral truncations

We study the convergence aspects of the metric on spectral truncations of geometry. We find general conditions on sequences of operator system spectral triples that allows one to prove a result on Gromov-Hausdorff convergence of the corresponding state spaces when equipped with Connes' distance formula. We exemplify this result for spectral truncations of the circle, Fourier series on the circle with a finite number of Fourier modes, and matrix algebras that converge to the sphere.

One-loop corrections to the spectral action

We analyze the perturbative quantization of the spectral action in noncommutative geometry and establish its one-loop renormalizability in a generalized sense, while staying within the spectral framework of noncommutative geometry. Our result is based on the perturbative expansion of the spectral action in terms of higher Yang-Mills and Chern-Simons forms. In the spirit of random noncommutative geometries, we consider the path integral over matrix fluctuations around a fixed noncommutative gauge background and show that the corresponding one-loop counterterms are of the same form so that they can be safely subtracted from the spectral action. A crucial role will be played by the appropriate Ward identities, allowing for a fully spectral formulation of the quantum theory at one loop.

Spectral truncations in noncommutative geometry and operator systems

In this paper we extend the traditional framework of noncommutative geometry in order to deal with spectral truncations of geometric spaces (i.e. imposing an ultraviolet cutoff in momentum space) and with tolerance relations which provide a coarse grain approximation of geometric spaces at a finite resolution. In our new approach the traditional role played by $C^*$-algebras is taken over by operator systems. As part of the techniques we treat $C^*$-envelopes, dual operator systems and stable equivalence. We define a propagation number for operator systems, which we show to be an invariant under stable equivalence and use to compare approximations of the same space. We illustrate our methods for concrete examples obtained by spectral truncations of the circle. These are operator systems of finite-dimensional Toeplitz matrices and their dual operator systems which are given by functions in the group algebra on the integers with support in a fixed interval. It turns out that the cones of positive elements and the pure state spaces for these operator systems possess a very rich structure which we analyze including for the algebraic geometry of the boundary of the positive cone and the metric aspect i.e. the distance on the state space associated to the Dirac operator. The main property of the spectral truncation is that it keeps the isometry group intact. In contrast, if one considers the other finite approximation provided by circulant matrices the isometry group becomes discrete, even though in this case the operator system is a $C^*$-algebra. We analyze this in the context of the finite Fourier transform. The extension of noncommutative geometry to operator systems allows one to deal with metric spaces up to finite resolution by considering the relation $d(x,y)<ε$ between two points, or more generally a tolerance relation which naturally gives rise to an operator system.

A survey of spectral models of gravity coupled to matter

This is a survey of the historical development of the Spectral Standard Model and beyond, starting with the ground breaking paper of Alain Connes in 1988 where he observed that there is a link between Higgs fields and finite noncommutative spaces. We present the important contributions that helped in the search and identification of the noncommutative space that characterizes the fine structure of space-time. The nature and properties of the noncommutative space are arrived at by independent routes and show the uniqueness of the Spectral Standard Model at low energies and the Pati-Salam unification model at high energies.

Entropy and the spectral action

We compute the information theoretic von Neumann entropy of the state associated to the fermionic second quantization of a spectral triple. We show that this entropy is given by the spectral action of the spectral triple for a specific universal function. The main result of our paper is the surprising relation between this function and the Riemann zeta function. It manifests itself in particular by the values of the coefficients $c(d)$ by which it multiplies the $d$ dimensional terms in the heat expansion of the spectral triple. We find that $c(d)$ is the product of the Riemann xi function evaluated at $-d$ by an elementary expression. In particular $c(4)$ is a rational multiple of $ζ(5)$ and $c(2)$ a rational multiple of $ζ(3)$. The functional equation gives a duality between the coefficients in positive dimension, which govern the high energy expansion, and the coefficients in negative dimension, exchanging even dimension with odd dimension.

Riemannian submersions and factorization of Dirac operators

We establish the factorization of Dirac operators on Riemannian submersions of compact spin$^c$ manifolds in unbounded KK-theory. More precisely, we show that the Dirac operator on the total space of such a submersion is unitarily equivalent to the tensor sum of a family of Dirac operators with the Dirac operator on the base space, up to an explicit bounded curvature term. Thus, the latter is an obstruction to having a factorization in unbounded KK-theory. We show that our tensor sum represents the bounded KK-product of the corresponding KK-cycles and connect to the early work of Connes and Skandalis.

Gauge Theory for Spectral Triples and the Unbounded Kasparov Product

We explore factorizations of noncommutative Riemannian spin geometries over commutative base manifolds in unbounded KK-theory. After setting up the general formalism of unbounded KK-theory and improving upon the construction of internal products, we arrive at a natural bundle-theoretic formulation of gauge theories arising from spectral triples. We find that the unitary group of a given noncommutative spectral triple arises as the group of endomorphisms of a certain Hilbert bundle; the inner fluctuations split in terms of connections on, and endomorphisms of, this Hilbert bundle. Moreover, we introduce an extended gauge group of unitary endomorphisms and a corresponding notion of gauge fields. We work out several examples in full detail, to wit Yang--Mills theory, the noncommutative torus and the $θ$-deformed Hopf fibration over the two-sphere.

Grand Unification in the Spectral Pati-Salam Model

We analyze the running at one-loop of the gauge couplings in the spectral Pati-Salam model that was derived in the framework of noncommutative geometry. There are a few different scenario's for the scalar particle content which are determined by the precise form of the Dirac operator for the finite noncommutative space. We consider these different scenarios and establish for all of them unification of the Pati-Salam gauge couplings. The boundary conditions are set by the usual RG flow for the Standard Model couplings at an intermediate mass scale at which the Pati-Salam symmetry is broken.

Beyond the Spectral Standard Model: Emergence of Pati-Salam Unification

The assumption that space-time is a noncommutative space formed as a product of a continuous four dimensional manifold times a finite space predicts, almost uniquely, the Standard Model with all its fermions, gauge fields, Higgs field and their representations. A strong restriction on the noncommutative space results from the first order condition which came from the requirement that the Dirac operator is a differential operator of order one. Without this restriction, invariance under inner automorphisms requires the inner fluctuations of the Dirac operator to contain a quadratic piece expressed in terms of the linear part. We apply the classification of product noncommutative spaces without the first order condition and show that this leads immediately to a Pati-Salam SU(2)_{R}x SU(2)_{L}x SU(4) type model which unifies leptons and quarks in four colors. Besides the gauge fields, there are 16 fermions in the (2,1,4)+(1,2,4) representation, fundamental Higgs fields in the (2,2,1), (2,1,4) and (1,1,1+15) representations. Depending on the precise form of the order one condition or not there are additional Higgs fields which are either composite depending on the fundamental Higgs fields listed above, or are fundamental themselves. These additional Higgs fields break spontaneously the Pati-Salam symmetries at high energies to those of the Standard Model.

Localizing gauge theories from noncommutative geometry

We recall the emergence of a generalized gauge theory from a noncommutative Riemannian spin manifold, viz. a real spectral triple $(A,H,D;J)$. This includes a gauge group determined by the unitaries in the $*$-algebra $A$ and gauge fields arising from a so-called perturbation semigroup which is associated to $A$. Our main new result is the interpretation of this generalized gauge theory in terms of an upper semi-continuous $C^*$-bundle on a (Hausdorff) base space $X$. The gauge group acts by vertical automorphisms on this $C^*$-bundle and can (under some mild conditions) be identified with the space of continuous sections of a group bundle on $X$. This then allows for a geometrical description of the group of inner automorphisms of $A$. We exemplify our construction by Yang-Mills theory and toric noncommutative manifolds and show that they actually give rise to continuous $C^*$-bundles. Moreover, in these examples the corresponding inner automorphism groups can be realized as spaces of sections of group bundles that we explicitly determine.

Supersymmetry and noncommutative geometry Part I: Supersymmetric almost-commutative geometries

Noncommutative geometry has seen remarkable applications for high energy physics, viz. the geometrical interpretation of the Standard Model. The question whether it also allows for supersymmetric theories has so far not been answered in a conclusive way. In this first of three papers we do a systematic analysis of the possibilities for almost-commutative geometries on a 4-dimensional, flat background to exhibit not only a particle content that is eligible for supersymmetry but also have a supersymmetric action. We come up with an approach in which we identify the basic 'building blocks' of potentially supersymmetric theories and the demands for their action to be supersymmetric. Examples that satisfy these demands turn out to be sparse.

Supersymmetry and noncommutative geometry Part II: Supersymmetry breaking

We describe how a soft supersymmetry breaking Lagrangian arises naturally in the context of almost-commutative geometries that fall within the classification of those having a supersymmetric particle content as well as a supersymmetric spectral action. All contributions to such a Lagrangian are seen to either be generated automatically after introducing gaugino masses to the theory or coming from the second Seeley-DeWitt coefficient that is already part of the spectral action. In noncommutative geometry, a supersymmetric particle content and the appearance of a soft breaking Lagrangian thus appear to be intimately connected to each other.

Supersymmetry and noncommutative geometry Part III: The noncommutative supersymmetric Standard Model

In a previous paper we developed a formalism to construct (potentially) supersymmetric theories in the context of noncommutative geometry. We apply this formalism to explore the existence of a noncommutative version of the minimal supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). We obtain the exact particle content of the MSSM and identify (in form) its interactions but conclude that their coefficients are such that the standard action functional used in noncommutative geometry is in fact not supersymmetric.

Gauge networks in noncommutative geometry

We introduce gauge networks as generalizations of spin networks and lattice gauge fields to almost-commutative manifolds. The configuration space of quiver representations (modulo equivalence) in the category of finite spectral triples is studied; gauge networks appear as an orthonormal basis in a corresponding Hilbert space. We give many examples of gauge networks, also beyond the well-known spin network examples. We find a Hamiltonian operator on this Hilbert space, inducing a time evolution on the C*-algebra of gauge network correspondences. Given a representation in the category of spectral triples of a quiver embedded in a spin manifold, we define a discretized Dirac operator on the quiver. We compute the spectral action of this Dirac operator on a four-dimensional lattice, and find that it reduces to the Wilson action for lattice gauge theories and a Higgs field lattice system. As such, in the continuum limit it reduces to the Yang-Mills-Higgs system. For the three-dimensional case, we relate the spectral action functional to the Kogut-Susskind Hamiltonian.

Going beyond the Standard Model with noncommutative geometry

The derivation of the full Standard Model from noncommutative geometry has been a promising sign for possible applications of the latter in High Energy Physics. Many believe, however, that the Standard Model cannot be the final answer. We translate several demands whose origin lies in physics to the context of noncommutative geometry and use these to put constraints on the fermionic content of models. We show that the Standard Model only satisfies these demands provided it has a right-handed neutrino in each 'generation'. Furthermore, we show that the demands can be met upon extending the SM with a copy of the representation (1, 2, 1/2), but this has consequences for the number of particle generations. We finally prove that the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model is not among the models that satisfy our constraints, but we pose a solution that is a slight extension of the MSSM.

Inner Fluctuations in Noncommutative Geometry without the first order condition

We extend inner fluctuations to spectral triples that do not fulfill the first-order condition. This involves the addition of a quadratic term to the usual linear terms. We find a semi-group of inner fluctuations, which only depends on the involutive algebra A and which extends the unitary group of A. This has a key application in noncommutative spectral models beyond the Standard Model, of which we consider here a toy model.

Quantization of gauge fields, graph polynomials and graph cohomology

We review quantization of gauge fields using algebraic properties of 3-regular graphs. We derive the Feynman integrand at n loops for a non-abelian gauge theory quantized in a covariant gauge from scalar integrands for connected 3-regular graphs, obtained from the two Symanzik polynomials. The transition to the full gauge theory amplitude is obtained by the use of a third, new, graph polynomial, the corolla polynomial. This implies effectively a covariant quantization without ghosts, where all the relevant signs of the ghost sector are incorporated in a double complex furnished by the corolla polynomial -we call it cycle homology- and by graph homology.

Moduli Spaces of Instantons on Toric Noncommutative Manifolds

We study analytic aspects of U(n) gauge theory over a toric noncommutative manifold $M_θ$. We analyse moduli spaces of solutions to the self-dual Yang-Mills equations on U(2) vector bundles over four-manifolds $M_θ$, showing that each such moduli space is either empty or a smooth Hausdorff manifold whose dimension we explicitly compute. In the special case of the four-sphere $S^4_θ$ we find that the moduli space of U(2) instantons with fixed second Chern number $k$ is a smooth manifold of dimension $8k-3$.

Particle Physics from Almost Commutative Spacetimes

Our aim in this review article is to present the applications of Connes' noncommutative geometry to elementary particle physics. Whereas the existing literature is mostly focused on a mathematical audience, in this article we introduce the ideas and concepts from noncommutative geometry using physicists' terminology, gearing towards the predictions that can be derived from the noncommutative description. Focusing on a light package of noncommutative geometry (so-called 'almost commutative manifolds'), we shall introduce in steps: electrodynamics, the electroweak model, culminating in the full Standard Model. We hope that our approach helps in understanding the role noncommutative geometry could play in describing particle physics models, eventually unifying them with Einstein's (geometrical) theory of gravity.

Renormalizability conditions for almost-commutative geometries

We formulate conditions for almost-commutative (spacetime) manifolds under which the asymptotically expanded spectral action is renormalizable. These conditions are of a graph-theoretical nature, involving the Krajewski diagrams that classify such geometries. This applies in particular to the Standard Model of particle physics, giving a graph-theoretical argument for its renormalizability. A promising potential application is in the selection of physical (renormalizable) field theories described by almost-commutative geometries, thereby going beyond the Standard Model.

Electrodynamics from Noncommutative Geometry

Within the framework of Connes' noncommutative geometry, the notion of an almost commutative manifold can be used to describe field theories on compact Riemannian spin manifolds. The most notable example is the derivation of the Standard Model of high energy physics from a suitably chosen almost commutative manifold. In contrast to such a non-abelian gauge theory, it has long been thought impossible to describe an abelian gauge theory within this framework. The purpose of this paper is to improve on this point. We provide a simple example of a commutative spectral triple based on the two-point space, and show that it yields a U(1) gauge theory. Then, we slightly modify the spectral triple such that we obtain the full classical theory of electrodynamics on a curved background manifold.

Higher-derivative gauge theories from noncommutative geometry

In this short note we review the interpretation of the spectral action for the Yang-Mills system in noncommutative geometry as a higher-derivative gauge theory, adopting an asymptotic expansion in a cutoff parameter. We recall our previous results on superrenormalizability of the resulting higher-derivative Yang-Mills gauge theory and confront this with [6] where these very results were erroneously claimed to be incorrect. We explain how their approach differs from ours, thus clarifying the apparent mismatch.

Renormalizability conditions for almost commutative manifolds

We formulate conditions under which the asymptotically expanded spectral action on an almost commutative manifold is renormalizable as a higher-derivative gauge theory. These conditions are of graph theoretical nature, involving the Krajewski diagrams that classify such manifolds. This generalizes our previous result on (super)renormalizability of the asymptotically expanded Yang-Mills spectral action to a more general class of particle physics models that can be described geometrically in terms of a noncommutative space. In particular, it shows that the asymptotically expanded spectral action which at lowest order gives the Standard Model of elementary particles is renormalizable.

Renormalization of the asymptotically expanded Yang-Mills spectral action

We study renormalizability aspects of the spectral action for the Yang-Mills system on a flat 4-dimensional background manifold, focusing on its asymptotic expansion. Interpreting the latter as a higher-derivative gauge theory, a power-counting argument shows that it is superrenormalizable. We determine the counterterms at one-loop using zeta function regularization in a background field gauge and establish their gauge invariance. Consequently, the corresponding field theory can be renormalized by a simple shift of the spectral function appearing in the spectral action. This manuscript provides more details than the shorter companion paper, where we have used a (formal) quantum action principle to arrive at gauge invariance of the counterterms. Here, we give in addition an explicit expression for the gauge propagator and compare to recent results in the literature.

Renormalization of the spectral action for the Yang-Mills system

We establish renormalizability of the full spectral action for the Yang-Mills system on a flat 4-dimensional background manifold. Interpreting the spectral action as a higher-derivative gauge theory, we find that it behaves unexpectedly well as far as renormalization is concerned. Namely, a power counting argument implies that the spectral action is superrenormalizable. From BRST-invariance of the one-loop effective action, we conclude that it is actually renormalizable as a gauge theory.

Holomorphic structures on the quantum projective line

We show that much of the structure of the 2-sphere as a complex curve survives the q-deformation and has natural generalizations to the quantum 2-sphere - which, with additional structures, we identify with the quantum projective line. Notably among these is the identification of a quantum homogeneous coordinate ring with the coordinate ring of the quantum plane. In parallel with the fact that positive Hochschild cocycles on the algebra of smooth functions on a compact oriented 2-dimensional manifold encode the information for complex structures on the surface, we formulate a notion of twisted positivity for twisted Hochschild and cyclic cocycles and exhibit an explicit twisted positive Hochschild cocycle for the complex structure on the sphere.

Perturbations and operator trace functions

We study the spectral functional tr f(D+A) for a suitable function f, a self-adjoint operator D having compact resolvent, and a certain class of bounded self-adjoint operators A. Such functionals were introduce by Chamseddine and Connes in the context of noncommutative geometry. Motivated by the physical applications of these functionals, we derive a Taylor expansion of them in terms of Gâteaux derivatives. This involves divided differences of f evaluated on the spectrum of D, as well as the matrix coefficients of A in an eigenbasis of D. This generalizes earlier results to infinite dimensions and to any number of derivatives.

Renormalization Hopf algebras for gauge theories and BRST-symmetries

The structure of the Connes-Kreimer renormalization Hopf algebra is studied for gauge theories, with particular emphasis on the BRST-formalism. We work in the explicit example of quantum chromodynamics, the physical theory of quarks and gluons. A coaction of the renormalization Hopf algebra is defined on the coupling constants and the fields. In this context, BRST-invariance of the action implies the existence of certain Hopf ideals in the renormalization Hopf algebra, encoding the Slavnov-Taylor identities for the coupling constants.

Supersymmetric QCD and noncommutative geometry

We derive supersymmetric quantum chromodynamics from a noncommutative manifold, using the spectral action principle of Chamseddine and Connes. After a review of the Einstein-Yang-Mills system in noncommutative geometry, we establish in full detail that it possesses supersymmetry. This noncommutative model is then extended to give a theory of quarks, squarks, gluons and gluinos by constructing a suitable noncommutative spin manifold (i.e. a spectral triple). The particles are found at their natural place in a spectral triple: the quarks and gluinos as fermions in the Hilbert space, the gluons and squarks as bosons as the inner fluctuations of a (generalized) Dirac operator by the algebra of matrix-valued functions on a manifold. The spectral action principle applied to this spectral triple gives the Lagrangian of supersymmetric QCD, including soft supersymmetry breaking mass terms for the squarks. We find that these results are in good agreement with the physics literature.

The ADHM Construction of Instantons on Noncommutative Spaces

We present an account of the ADHM construction of instantons on Euclidean space-time $\mathbb{R}^4$ from the point of view of noncommutative geometry. We recall the main ingredients of the classical construction in a coordinate algebra format, which we then deform using a cocycle twisting procedure to obtain a method for constructing families of instantons on noncommutative space-time, parameterised by solutions to an appropriate set of ADHM equations. We illustrate the noncommutative construction in two special cases: the Moyal-Groenewold plane $\mathbb{R}^4_\hbar$ and the Connes-Landi plane $\mathbb{R}^4_θ$.

The noncommutative geometry of Yang-Mills fields

We generalize to topologically non-trivial gauge configurations the description of the Einstein-Yang-Mills system in terms of a noncommutative manifold, as was done previously by Chamseddine and Connes. Starting with an algebra bundle and a connection thereon, we obtain a spectral triple, a construction that can be related to the internal Kasparov product in unbounded KK-theory. In the case that the algebra bundle is an endomorphism bundle, we construct a PSU(N)-principal bundle for which it is an associated bundle. The so-called internal fluctuations of the spectral triple are parametrized by connections on this principal bundle and the spectral action gives the Yang-Mills action for these gauge fields, minimally coupled to gravity. Finally, we formulate a definition for a topological spectral action.

The structure of renormalization Hopf algebras for gauge theories I: Representing Feynman graphs on BV-algebras

We study the structure of renormalization Hopf algebras of gauge theories. We identify certain Hopf subalgebras in them, whose character groups are semidirect products of invertible formal power series with formal diffeomorphisms. This can be understood physically as wave function renormalization and renormalization of the coupling constants, respectively. After taking into account the Slavnov-Taylor identities for the couplings as generators of a Hopf ideal, we find Hopf subalgebras in the corresponding quotient as well. In the second part of the paper, we explain the origin of these Hopf ideals by considering a coaction of the renormalization Hopf algebras on the Batalin-Vilkovisky (BV) algebras generated by the fields and couplings constants. The so-called classical master equation satisfied by the action in the BV-algebra implies the existence of the above Hopf ideals in the renormalization Hopf algebra. Finally, we exemplify our construction by applying it to Yang-Mills gauge theory.

Noncommutative tori and the Riemann-Hilbert correspondence

We study the interplay between noncommutative tori and noncommutative elliptic curves through a category of equivariant differential modules on $\mathbb{C}^*$. We functorially relate this category to the category of holomorphic vector bundles on noncommutative tori as introduced by Polishchuk and Schwarz and study the induced map between the corresponding K-theories. In addition, there is a forgetful functor to the category of noncommutative elliptic curves of Soibelman and Vologodsky, as well as a forgetful functor to the category of vector bundles on $\mathbb{C}^*$ with regular singular connections. The category that we consider has the nice property of being a Tannakian category, hence it is equivalent to the category of representations of an affine group scheme. Via an equivariant version of the Riemann-Hilbert correspondence we determine this group scheme to be (the algebraic hull of) $\mathbb{Z}^2$. We also obtain a full subcategory of the category of holomorphic bundles of the noncommutative torus, which is equivalent to the category of representations of $\mathbb{Z}$. This group is the proposed topological fundamental group of the noncommutative torus (understood as a degenerate elliptic curve) and we study Nori's notion of étale fundamental group in this context.
