Engineering the magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of PrVO3 epitaxial oxide thin films by strain effects

Combining multiple degrees of freedom in strongly-correlated materials such as transition-metal oxides would lead to fascinating magnetic and magnetocaloric features. Herein, the strain effects are used to markedly tailor the magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of PrVO3 thin films. The selection of appropriate thickness and substrate enables us to dramatically decrease the coercive magnetic field from 2.4 T previously observed in sintered PVO3 bulk to 0.05 T for compressive thin films making from the PrVO3 compound a nearly soft magnet. This is associated with a marked enhancement of the magnetic moment and the magnetocaloric effect that reach unusual maximum values of roughly 4.86 uB and 56.8 J/kg K in the magnetic field change of 6 T applied in the sample plane at the cryogenic temperature range (3 K), respectively. This work strongly suggests that taking advantage of different degrees of freedom and the exploitation of multiple instabilities in a nanoscale regime is a promising strategy for unveiling unexpected phases accompanied by a large magnetocaloric effect in oxides.

Preferential Orientation Relationships in Ca$_2$MnO$_4$ Ruddlesden-Popper thin films

A high-throughput investigation of local epitaxy (called combinatorial substrate epitaxy) was carried out on Ca$_2$MnO$_4$ Ruddlesden-Popper thin films of six thicknesses (from 20 to 400 nm), all deposited on isostructural polycrystalline Sr$_2$TiO$_4$ substrates. Electron backscatter diffraction revealed grain-over-grain local epitaxial growth for all films, resulting in a single orientation relationship ($OR$) for each substrate-film grain pair. Two preferred epitaxial $ORs$ accounted for more than 90 \% of all ORs on 300 different microcrystals, based on analyzing 50 grain pairs for each thickness. The unit cell over unit cell $OR$ ([100][001]$_{film}$ $\parallel$ [100][001]$_{substrate}$, or $OR1$) accounted for approximately 30 \% of each film. The $OR$ that accounted for 60 \% of each film ([100][001]$_{film}$ $\parallel$ [100][010]$_{substrate}$, or $OR2$) corresponds to a rotation from $OR1$ by 90$^{\circ}$ about the a-axis. $OR2$ is strongly favored for substrate orientations in the center of the stereographic triangle, and $OR1$ is observed for orientations very close to (001) or to those near the edge connecting (100) and (110). While $OR1$ should be lower in energy, the majority observation of $OR2$ implies kinetic hindrances decrease the frequency of $OR1$. Persistent grain over grain growth and the absence of variations of the $OR$ frequencies with thickness implies that the growth competition is finished within the first few \si{\nano\meter}, and local epitaxy persists thereafter during growth.

BiFeO3/La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 heterostructures deposited on Spark Plasma Sintered LaAlO3 Substrates

Multiferroic BiFeO3 (BFO) / La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 heterostructured thin films were grown by pulsed laser deposition on polished spark plasma sintered LaAlO3 (LAO) polycrystalline substrates. Both polycrystalline LAO substrates and BFO films were locally characterized using electron backscattering diffraction (EBSD), which confirmed the high-quality local epitaxial growth on each substrate grain. Piezoforce microscopy was used to image and switch the piezo-domains, and the results are consistent with the relative orientation of the ferroelectric variants with the surface normal. This high-throughput synthesis process opens the routes towards wide survey of electronic properties as a function of crystalline orientation in complex oxide thin film synthesis.

Growth of Ca$_2$MnO$_4$ Ruddlesden-Popper structured thin films using Combinatorial Substrate Epitaxy

The local epitaxial growth of pulsed laser deposited Ca$_2$MnO$_4$ films on polycrystalline spark plasma sintered Sr$_2$TiO$_4$ substrates was investigated to determine phase formation and preferred epitaxial orientation relationships ($ORs$) for isostructural Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) heteroepitaxy, further developing the high-throughput synthetic approach called Combinatorial Substrate Epitaxy (CSE). Both grazing incidence X-ray diffraction and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) patterns of the film and substrate were indexable as single-phase RP-structured compounds. The optimal growth temperature (between 650 $^{\circ}$C and 800 $^{\circ}$C) was found to be 750 $^{\circ}$C using the maximum value of the average image quality (IQ) of the backscattered diffraction patterns. Films grew in a grain-over-grain pattern such that each Ca$_2$MnO$_4$ grain had a single $OR$ with the Sr$_2$TiO$_4$ grain on which it grew. Three primary $ORs$ described 47 out of 49 grain pairs that covered nearly all of RP orientation space. The first $OR$, found for 20 of the 49, was the expected RP unit-cell over RP unit-cell $OR$, expressed as [100][001]$_{film}$||[100][001]$_{sub}$. The other two $ORs$ were essentially rotated from the first by 90$^{\circ}$, with one (observed for 17 of 49 pairs) being rotated about the [100] and the other (observed for 10 of 49 pairs) being rotated about the [110] (and not exactly by 90$^{\circ}$). These results indicate that only a small number of $ORs$ are needed to describe isostructural RP heteroepitaxy and further demonstrate the potential of CSE in the design and growth of a wide range of complex functional oxides.

Structural analysis of strained LaVO$_3$ thin films

While structure refinement is routinely achieved for simple bulk materials, the accurate structural determination still poses challenges for thin films due on the one hand to the small amount of material deposited on the thicker substrate and, on the other hand, to the intricate epitaxial relationships that substantially complicate standard X-ray diffraction analysis. Using a combined approach, we analyze the crystal structure of epitaxial LaVO$_3$ thin films grown on (100)-oriented SrTiO$_3$. Transmission electron microscopy study reveals that the thin films are epitaxially grown on SrTiO$_3$ and points to the presence of 90$^{\circ}$ oriented domains. The mapping of the reciprocal space obtained by high resolution X-ray diffraction permits refinement of the lattice parameters. We finally deduce that strain accommodation imposes a monoclinic structure onto the LaVO$_3$ film. The reciprocal space maps are numerically processed and the extracted data computed to refine the atomic positions, which are compared to those obtained using precession electron diffraction tomography. We discuss the obtained results and our methodological approach as a promising thin film structure determination for complex systems.

Structural characterization of PrVO3 epitaxial thin films

Rare earth perovskite oxides constitute a wide family of materials presenting functional proper- ties strongly coupled to their crystalline structure. Here, we report on the experimental results on epitaxial PrVO3 deposited on SrTiO3 single crystal substrates by pulsed laser deposition. By com- bining advanced structural characterization tools, we have observed that the PVO unrelaxed film structure grown on STO, is characterized by two kinds of oriented domains whose epitaxial relations are: (i) PrVO3[110]o//SrTiO3[001]c and PrVO3[001]o//SrTiO3[100]c, (ii) PrVO3[110]o//SrTiO3[001]c and PrVO3[001]o//SrTiO3[010]c. We have also measured reciprocal space maps. From these results, we have determined that the PVO film epitaxy on STO imposes a lowering of the PVO structure symmetry from orthorhombic (Pbnm) to monoclinic (P21/m). We show, the nominal strain induced by the substrate being constant, that the obtained film structure depends on both growth oxygen and temperature. Thus, by finely controlling the deposition conditions, we could tune the strain experienced by PrVO3 thin film. These results show an alternative to substrate mismatch as a path to control the strain and structure of PVO films.

Growth and texture of Spark Plasma Sintered Al2O3 ceramics: a combined analysis of X-rays and Electron Back Scatter Diffraction

Textured alumina ceramics were obtained by Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) of undoped commercial a-Al2O3 powders. Various parameters (density, grain growth, grain size distribution) of the alumina ceramics, sintered at two typical temperatures 1400°C and 1700°C, are investigated. Quantitative textural and structural analysis, carried out using a combination of Electron Back Scattering Diffraction (EBSD) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), are represented in the form of mapping, and pole figures. The mechanical properties of these textured alumina ceramics include high elastic modulus and hardness value with high anisotropic nature, opening the door for a large range of applications

High-throughput synthesis of thermoelectric Ca$_3$Co$_4$O$_9$ films

Properties of complex oxide thin films can be tuned over a range of values as a function of mismatch, composition, orientation, and structure. Here, we report a strategy for growing structured epitaxial thermoelectric thin films leading to improved Seebeck coefficient. Instead of using single-crystal sapphire substrates to support epitaxial growth, Ca$_3$Co$_4$O$_9$ films are deposited, using the Pulsed Laser Deposition technique, onto Al$_2$O$_3$ polycrystalline substrates textured by Spark Plasma Sintering. The structural quality of the 2000 Åthin film was investigated by Transmission Electron Microscopy, while the crystallographic orientation of the grains and the epitaxial relationships were determined by Electron Back Scatter Diffraction. The use of a polycrystalline ceramic template leads to structured films that are in good local epitaxial registry. The Seebeck coefficient is about 170 $μ$V/K at 300 K, a typical value of misfit material with low carrier density. This high-throughput process, called combinatorial substrate epitaxy, appears to facilitate the rational tuning of functional oxide films, opening a route to the epitaxial synthesis of high quality complex oxides.

Charge localization at the interface between La1-xSrxMnO3 and the infinite layers cuprate CaCuO2

(CaCuO2)m/(La0.7Sr0.3MnO3)n superlattices, consisting of the infinite layers cuprate CaCuO2 and the optimally doped manganite La1-xSrxMnO3, were grown by pulsed laser deposition. The transport properties are dominated by the manganite block. X-Ray Absorption spectroscopy measurements show a clear evidence of an orbital reconstruction at the interface, ascribed to the hybridization between the Cu 3d3z2-r2 and the Mn 3d3z2-r2 orbitals via interface apical oxygen ions. Such a mechanism localizes holes at the interfaces, thus preventing charge transfer to the CaCuO2 block. Some charge (holes) transfer occurs toward the La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 block in strongly oxidized superlattices, contributing to the suppression of the magnetotransport properties.

Electronic structure and optical band gap of CoFe2O4 thin films

Electronic structure and optical band gap of CoFe2O4 thin films grown on (001) oriented LaAlO3 have been investigated. Surprisingly, these films show additional Raman modes at room temperature as compared to a bulk spinel structure. The splitting of Raman modes is explained by considering the short-range ordering of Co and Fe cations in octahedral site of spinel structure. In addition, an expansion of band-gap is observed with the reduction of film thickness, which is explained by the quantum size effect and misfit dislocation. Such results provide interesting insights for the growth of spinel phases.

High Tc superconductivity in superlattices of insulating oxides

We report the occurrence of superconductivity, with maximum Tc = 40 K, in superlattices (SLs) based on two insulating oxides, namely CaCuO2 and SrTiO3. In these (CaCuO2)n/(SrTiO3)m SLs, the CuO2 planes belong only to CaCuO2 block, which is an antiferromagnetic insulator. Superconductivity, confined within few unit cells at the CaCuO2/SrTiO3 interface, shows up only when the SLs are grown in a highly oxidizing atmosphere, because of extra oxygen ions entering at the interfaces. Evidence is reported that the hole doping of the CuO2 planes is obtained by charge transfer from the interface layers, which act as charge reservoir.

Incipient ferroelectricity in 2.3% tensile-strained CaMnO3 films

Epitaxial CaMnO3 films grown with 2.3% tensile strain on (001)-oriented LaAlO3 substrates are found to be incipiently ferroelectric below 25 K. Optical second harmonic generation (SHG) was used for the detection of the incipient polarization. The SHG analysis reveals that CaMnO3 crystallites with in-plane orientation of the orthorhombic b axis contribute to an electric polarization oriented along the orthorhombic a (resp.\ c) axis in agreement with the predictions from density functional calculations.

Structural transition in LaVO3/SrVO3 superlattices and its influence on transport properties

Measurements of the resistive properties and the lattice parameters of a (LaVO3)[6 unit cells]/(SrVO3)[1 unit cell] superlattice between 10K and room temperature are presented. A low temperature metallic phase compatible with a Fermi liquid behavior is evidenced. It disappears in the vicinity of a structural transition from a monoclinic to tetragonal phase, in which disorder seems to strongly influence the transport. Our results will enrich the understanding of the electronic properties of complex heterostructures.

Switching magnetoresistance in vertically interfaced Pr0.5Ca0.5MnO3 grown on ZnO nanowires

The synthesis, morphology and magneto-transport properties of nanostructure-engineered charge-ordered Pr0.5Ca0.5MnO3 grown on ZnO nanowires are reported. The stability of the charge-ordering can be tuned, but more interestingly the sign of the magnetoresistance is inverted at low temperatures. Coexistence of ferromagnetic clusters on the surface and antiferromagnetic phase in the core of the grains were considered in order to understand these features. This work suggests that such a process of growing on nanowires network can be readily extended to other transition metal oxides and open doors towards tailoring their functionalities.

Anisotropic magnetocaloric effect in all-ferromagnetic (La0.7Sr0.3MnO3/SrRuO3) superlattices

We exploit the magnetic interlayer coupling in La0.7Sr0.3MnO3/SrRuO3 superlattices to realize a crossover between inverse and conventional magnetic entropy changes. Our data reveal a strong anisotropic nature of the magnetocaloric effect due to the magnetic anisotropy of the superlattice. Therefore, artificial superlattices built from ferromagnetic materials that can be used to alter the magnetic structure as well as the magnetic anisotropy, could also be utilized for tuning the magnetocaloric properties, which may open a constructive approach for magnetic refrigeration applications.

Magnetocaloric effect and improved relative cooling power in (La0.7Sr0.3MnO3/SrRuO3) superlattices

Magnetic properties of a series of (La0.7Sr0.3MnO3/SrRuO3) superlattices, where the SrRuO3 layer thickness is varying, are examined. A room-temperature magnetocaloric effect is obtained owing to the finite size effect which reduces the TC of La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 layers. While the working temperature ranges are enlarged,, -DeltaSmax values remains similar to the values in polycrystalline La0.7Sr0.3MnO3. Consequently, the relative cooling powers are significantly improved, the microscopic mechanism of which is related to the effect of the interfaces at La0.7Sr0.3MnO3/SrRuO3 and higher nanostructural disorder. This study indicates that artificial oxide superlattices/multilayers might provide an alternative pathway in searching for efficient room-temperature magnetic refrigerators for (nano)microscale systems.

Microstructure and interface studies of LaVO3/SrVO3 superlattices

The structure and interface characteristics of (LaVO3)6m(SrVO3)m superlattices deposited on (100)-SrTiO3 (STO) substrate were studied using Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). Cross-section TEM studies revealed that both LaVO3 (LVO) and SrVO3 (SVO) layers are good single crystal quality and epitaxially grown with respect to the substrate. It is evidenced that LVO layers are made of two orientational variants of a distorted perovskite compatible with bulk LaVO3 while SVO layers suffers from a tetragonal distortion due to the substrate induced stain. Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy (EELS) investigations indicate changes in the fine structure of the V L23 edge, related to a valence change between the LaVO3 and SrVO3 layers.

On the derivation of the magnetocaloric properties in ferrimagnetic spinel Mn3O4

Large magnetocaloric effect has been observed in Mn3O4 around its ferrimagnetic transition at TN = 42.75 K. Field-induced isothermal entropy changes (\DeltaS) were derived from both magnetic and calorimetric techniques. The maximum |\DeltaS| and adiabatic temperature change (ΔTad) at TN are 11 J kg-1 K-1 and 1.9 K, respectively, for a magnetic field change of 20 kOe. Moreover, it is found that the complex magnetic phase transitions taking place below TN produce additional -but smaller- features on \DeltaS(T).

Tunable magnetic interaction at the atomic scale in oxide heterostructures

We report on a systematic study of a number of structurally identical but chemically distinct transition metal oxides in order to determine how the material-specific properties such as the composition and the strain affect the properties at the interface of heterostructures. Our study considers a series of structures containing two layers of ferromagnetic SrRuO3, with antiferromagnetic insulating manganites sandwiched in between. The results demonstrate how to control the strength and relative orientation of interfacial ferromagnetism in correlated electron materials by means of valence state variation and substrate-induced strain, respectively.

Constrained ferroelectric domain orientation in (BiFeO3)m(SrTiO3)n superlattice

Ferroelectric domains were investigated using piezoresponse force microscopy in superlattices composed of multiferroic BiFeO3 and SrTiO3 layers. Compared to single BiFeO3 thin films, a reduction in the domains size and a suppression of the in-plane orientation of domains are observed in a superlattice of (BiFeO3)4(SrTiO3)8, suggesting a constrained ferroelectric domain orientation along the out-of-plane <001> direction. Such modification of domain size and orientation in BiFeO3-based heterostructures could play a vital role on engineering the domains and domain wall mediated functional properties necessary for device applications

Polar properties of Eu0.6Y0.4MnO3 ceramics and their magnetic field dependence

Eu1-xYxMnO3 exhibits, unlike other magnetoelectric systems, very distinctive features. Its magnetoelectric properties is driven by the magnetic spin of the Mn3+ ion, but they can be drastically changed by varying the content of Y3+, which it does not carry any magnetic moment. Though the x = 0.40 composition has been studied extensively, some basic questions still remain to be thoroughly understood. Thus, this work is aimed at studying some of its polar properties and their magnetic field dependence as well. The experimental results here reported have shown that this material is very easily polarisable under external electric fields, and so, whenever the polarization is obtained from time integration of the displacement currents, an induced polarization is superposed to the spontaneous one, eventually masking the occurrence of ferroelectricity. We have found clear evidence for the influence of a magnetic field in the polar properties of Eu0.6Y0.4MnO3. The study of electric polarization of Eu0.6Y0.4MnO3 under an external magnetic field yields a value with the same order of magnitude of the remanent polarization determined from polarization reversal experiments. The comparison of the magnetic induced changes on the polarization obtained in polycrystalline samples and single crystals confirms the threshold magnetic field value for the polarization rotation from the a- to the c-direction, and evidencing the importance of the granular nature of the samples in the polar response to magnetic field.

Probing of local ferroelectricity in BiFeO3 thin films and (BiFeO3)m(SrTiO3)m superlattices

Ferroelectric BiFeO3 thin films and artificial superlattices of (BiFeO3)m(SrTiO3)m (m~ 1 to 10 unit cells) were fabricated on (001)-oriented SrTiO3 substrates by pulsed laser ablation. The variation of leakage current and macroscopic polarization with periodicity was studied. Piezo force microscopy studies revealed the presence of large ferroelectric domains in the case of BiFeO3 thin films while a size reduction in ferroelectric domains was observed in the case of superlattice structures. The results show that the modification of ferroelectric domains through superlattice, could provide an additional control on engineering the domain wall mediated functional properties.

Temperature and fluence dependence of ultrafast phase separation dynamics in Pr0.6Ca0.4MnO3 thin films

Temperature and fluence dependence of the transient photoinduced reflectivity and the magnetooptical Kerr angle was measured in two Pr0.6Ca0.4MnO3 thin films subject to tensile and compressive substrate-induced strain. A photoinduced transient ferromagnetic metallic (TFM) phase is found to form below ~60K and ~40K in the substrate-strained and substrate-compressed film, respectively. From the hysteresis loops a difference in the TFM cluster sizes and amount of photomodulation is observed at low temperatures and low excitation fluences in the films with different strain. Surprisingly, the characteristic timescale for the TFM phase photomodulation is virtually strain independent. At high excitation fluences, the cluster sizes and amount of photomodulation are independent on the substrate-induced strain.

Ultrafast photoinduced phase separation dynamics in Pr(0.6)Ca(0.4)MnO(3) thin films

The time resolved Magnetooptical Kerr effect in the substrate-strain-induced insulating ferromagnetic phase in (Pr$_{0.6}$Ca$_{0.4}$)MnO$_3$ thin films on two different substrates was measured in a magnetic field up to 1.1T. The photoinduced Kerr rotation and ellipticity show remarkably different magnetic-field dependence. From the comparison of the magnetic field dependencies of the photoinduced and static Kerr rotation and ellipticity we conclude that a transient ferromagnetic metallic phase, embedded within the insulating ferromagnetic phase, is created upon the photoexcitation at low temperatures. A comparison of temporal dependence of the photoinduced Kerr signals with the photoinduced reflectivity indicates the change of the fractions of the phases takes place on a timescale of ten picoseconds independent of the substrate.

Effect of electric/magnetic field on pinned/biased moments at the interfaces of magnetic superlattices

We have observed the pinned/biased moments in the superlattices consisting of ferromagnetic (FM) SrRuO3 (SRO) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) SrMnO3 (SMO)bilayer. The alternate stacking of SRO and SMO leading to a low field positive magnetoresistance with enhanced hysteretic field dependent magnetoresistance under the application of the out-of-plane magnetic field. We attribute these effects to the observed biased/pinned magnetic moments in the SRO layer in the vicinity of the interfaces. In addition, the biased/pinned moments can be oriented under the application of either the out-of-plane magnetic field or a combination of out-of-plane magnetic field and in-plane electric field. These results will bring new insights in the understanding of the coupling at the AFM/FM interface which can be useful for creating new exotic phenomena at the interfaces of the multilayer.

Stress deformations and structural quenching in Sm0.5Ca0.5MnO3 thin films allow a huge decrease of the charge order melting magnetic field

Thin films of Sm0.5Ca0.5MnO3 manganites with charge ordering (CO) properties and colossal magnetoresistance were synthesized by pulsed laser deposition technique on (100)-SrTiO3 and (100)-LaAlO3 substrates. We first compare the structural modifications as function of the substrate and film thickness. Secondly, measuring transport properties in magnetic fields up to 24T, we establish the temperature-field phase diagram describing the stability of the CO state and compare it to bulk material. We show that some structural modification induced by the substrate occurs and that the CO melting magnetic field is greatly reduced. Moreover, with the temperature decrease, no modification of the lattice parameters is observed. We then propose an explanation based on the quenching of the unit cell of the film that adopts the in-plane lattice parameters of the substrate and thus, prevents the complete growth of the CO state at low temperature.

Interfacial strain measurements in $SrRuO_3/SrMnO_3$ magnetic multilayers

Magnetic multilayers of $(SrRuO_3)_m(SrMnO_3)_n$ were grown artificially using the pulsed laser deposition technique on (001)-oriented $SrTiO_3$ substrates. The state of strain at the interfaces and the structural coherency are studied in details utilizing asymmetrical $X$-ray diffraction and the $\sin ^2ψ$ method. First, the evolution of the lattice parameters, the crystallinity and the epitaxy of the films are evaluated as a function of the number of $SrMnO_3$ unit cells using $X$-rays diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Second, our results on the stress indicate that the $SrRuO_3/SrMnO_3$ superlattices show a larger residual strain as compared to the single layer film of $SrRuO_3$. This suggests that the lattice stiffening from interfacial strain and inhibiting the dislocation by composition modulation. Finally, these results bring insights on the interfacial stress measurements of oxide multilayers that can be used to control the physical properties at the level of the atomic scale.

Substrate-effect on the magnetic microstructure of La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_{3}$ thin films studied by magnetic force microscopy

Colossal magnetoresistive (CMR) La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_{3}$ (LSMO) thin films have been grown under tensile strains on (100)-SrTiO$_{3}$ substrates and compressive strains on (100)-LaAlO$_{3}$ and (110)-NdGaO$_{3}$ substrates by pulsed laser deposition. Using magnetic force microscopy (MFM), a "feather-like" magnetic pattern, characteristic of films with an in-plane magnetization, is observed for films deposited on both SrTiO$_{3}$ and NdGaO$_{3}$ while a "bubble" magnetic pattern, typical of films with an out-of plane magnetization, is recorded for LaAlO$_{3}$. We show that the shape of the magnetic pattern imaged by MFM is fully correlated to the easy direction of the magnetization in the film.
