Surface state at $BaSnO_3$ evidenced by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and ab initio calculations

Perovskite alkaline earth stannates, such as $BaSnO_3$ and $SrSnO_3$, showing light transparency and high electrical conductivity (when doped), have become promising candidates for novel optoelectrical devices. Such devices are mostly based on hetero-structures and understanding of their electronic structure, which usually deviates from the bulk, is mandatory for exploring a full application potential. Employing angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and ab initio calculations we reveal the existence of a 2-dimensional metallic state at the $SnO_2$-terminated surface of a 1\% La-doped $BaSnO_3$ thin film. The observed surface state is characterized by distinct carrier density and a smaller effective mass in comparison with the corresponding bulk values. The small surface effective mass of about $0.12m_e$ can cause an improvement of the electrical conductivity of BSO based heterostructures.

Correlation strength and orbital differentiation across the phase diagram of plutonium metal

We compare the trends on the strength of electronic correlations across the different phases of elemental Pu focusing on its site and orbital dependence, using a combination of density functional theory (DFT) and dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) calculations within the vertex corrected one crossing approximation. We find that Pu-5$f$ states are more correlated in $δ$-Pu, followed by some crystallographic sites in $α$ and $β$ phases. In addition, we observe that Pu-5$f_{5/2}$ and Pu-5$f_{7/2}$ orbital differentiation is a general feature of this material, as is site differentiation in the low symmetry phases. The Pu-5$f_{5/2}$ states show Fermi liquid like behavior whereas the Pu-5$f_{7/2}$ states remaining incoherent down to very low temperatures. We correlate the correlation strength in the different phases to their structure and the Pu-5$f$ occupancy of their crystallographic sites.

Anisotropic Correlated Electronic Structure of Colossal Thermopower Marcasite FeSb$_2$

Iron antimonide (FeSb$_2$) is a mysterious material with peculiar colossal thermopower of about $-45$ mV/K at 10 K. However, a unified microscopic description of this phenomenon is far from being achieved. The understanding of the electronic structure in details is crucial in identifying the microscopic mechanism of FeSb$_2$ thermopower. Combining angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and first-principles calculations we find that the spectrum of FeSb$_2$ consists of two bands near the Fermi energy: the nondispersive strongly renormalized $α$-band, and the hole-like $β$-band that intersects the first one at $Γ$ and Y points of the Brillouin zone. Our study reveals the presence of sizable correlations, predominantly among electrons derived from Fe-3d states, and considerable anisotropy in the electronic structure of FeSb$_2$. These key ingredients are of fundamental importance in the description of colossal thermopower in FeSb$_2$.

Metal-insulator Transition in VO2: a DFT+DMFT perspective

We present a theoretical investigation of the electronic structure of rutile (metallic) and M$_1$ and M$_2$ monoclinic (insulating) phases of VO$_2$ employing a fully self-consistent combination of density functional theory and embedded dynamical mean field theory calculations. We describe the electronic structure of the metallic and both insulating phases of VO$_2$, and propose a distinct mechanism for the gap opening. We show that Mott physics plays an essential role in all phases of VO$_2$: undimerized vanadium atoms undergo classical Mott transition through local moment formation (in the M$_2$ phase), while strong superexchange within V-dimers adds significant dynamic intersite correlations, which remove the singularity of self-energy for dimerized V-atoms. The resulting transition from rutile to dimerized M$_1$ phase is adiabatically connected to Peierls-like transition, but is better characterized as the Mott transition in the presence of strong intersite exchange. As a consequence of Mott physics, the gap in the dimerized M$_1$ phase is temperature dependent. The sole increase of electronic temperature collapses the gap, reminiscent of recent experiments.

Hydrogenated grain boundaries in graphene

We have investigated by means of first principles calculations the structural and electronic properties of hydrogenated graphene structures with distinct grain boundary defects. Our total energy results reveal that the adsorption of a single H is more stable at grain boundary defect. The electronic structure of the grains boundaries upon hydrogen adsorption have been examined. Further total energy calculations indicate that the adsorption of two H on two neighbor carbons, forming a basic unit of graphane, is more stable at the defect region. Therefore, we expect that these extended defects would work as a nucleation region for the formation of a narrow graphane strip embedded in graphene region.
