Deviations from the extended London model at high magnetic fields in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_7$

We report on the evolution with magnetic field and temperature of the vortex lattice (VL) in fully-oxygenated YBa2Cu3O7 as studied by time-of-flight small angle neutron scattering. Using the HFM/EXED beamline, we have obtained data up to 25.9 T - much higher than that available previously. Our VL structure results indicate the progressive suppression by field of the superconductivity along the crystallographic b (CuO chain) direction. The intensity of the diffracted signal reveals the spatial variation of magnetization caused by the VL (the "form factor"). Instead of a rapid fall-off with field, as seen in superconductors with smaller upper critical fields, we find that the form factor is almost constant with field above about 12 T. We speculate that this is due to Pauli paramagnetic moments, which increase at high fields due to alignment of the spins of quasiparticles in the vortex cores.

Magnetic correlations of the quasi-one-dimensional half-integer spin-chain antiferromagnets Sr$M_2$V$_2$O$_8$ ($M$ = Co, Mn)

Magnetic correlations of two iso-structural quasi-one-dimensional (1D) antiferromagnetic spin-chain compounds Sr$M_2$V$_2$O$_8$ ($M$ = Co, Mn) have been investigated by magnetization and powder neutron diffraction. Two different collinear antiferromagnetic (AFM) structures, characterized by the propagation vectors, $k$ = (0 0 1) and $k$ = (0 0 0), have been found below $\sim$ 5.2 K and $\sim$ 42.2 K for the Co- and Mn-compounds, respectively. For the Mn-compound, AFM chains (along the $c$ axis) order ferromagnetically within the $ab$ plane, whereas, for the Co-compound, AFM chains order ferro-/antiferromagnetically along the $a/b$ direction. The critical exponent study confirms that the Co- and Mn-compounds belong to the Ising and Heisenberg universality classes, respectively. For both compounds, short-range spin-spin correlations are present over a wide temperature range above $T_N$. The reduced ordered moments at base temperature (1.5 K) indicate the presence of quantum fluctuations in both compounds due to the quasi-1D magnetic interactions.

Highly Dispersive Spin Excitations in the Chain Cuprate Li2CuO2

We present an inelastic neutron scattering investigation of Li2CuO2 detecting the long sought quasi-1D magnetic excitations with a large dispersion along the CuO2-chains studied up to 25 meV. The total dispersion is governed by a surprisingly large ferromagnetic (FM) nearest-neighbor exchange integral J1=-228 K. An anomalous quartic dispersion near the zone center and a pronounced minimum near (0,0.11,0.5) r.l.u. (corresponding to a spiral excitation with a pitch angle about 41 degree point to the vicinity of a 3D FM-spiral critical point. The leading exchange couplings are obtained applying standard linear spin-wave theory. The 2nd neighbor inter-chain interaction suppresses a spiral state and drives the FM in-chain ordering below the Ne'el temperature. The obtained exchange parameters are in agreement with the results for a realistic five-band extended Hubbard Cu 3d O 2p model and L(S)DA+U predictions.
