Probing the magnetic ground state and magnetoelastic coupling in double perovskite ruthenate: Ca2ScRuO6

Ruthenates, materials with a single magnetic Ruthenium (Ru) atom, often display an exotic array of ground states ranging from superconductivity to altermagnetism. In this work, we investigated the magnetic ground state of a least explored member of the 4d3 double perovskite ruthenate series A2ScRuO6 (A = Ca, Sr, Ba): Ca2ScRuO6. Interestingly, temperature-dependent bulk susceptibility curve shows ferrimagnetic-like behaviour above the magnetic ordering at around 40 K, which were corroborated by the identification of the mixed valence states, Ru5+ and Ru4+ via X-ray absorption spectroscopy. Structural analysis further revealed atomic-site exchange between the Ru and Sc sites, which results in the Ru mixed valence states. Neutron powder diffraction measurements detected the presence of magnetic Bragg peaks at a low temperature near 4 K and a moderate magnetoelastic coupling near the ordering temperature of 40 K. However, the corresponding symmetry analysis shows a weak Type I antiferromagnetic ground state with a reduced magnetic moment of 1.1μB/Ru atom. Our findings establish an unusual magnetic ground state in the Mott insulating Ca2ScRuO6, where a long range ordered antiferromagnet coexists with small magnetic clusters, which manifests a ferrimagnetic-like high temperature inverse magnetic susceptibility. This system presents a unique platform to study long-range magnetic order in the presence of antisite disorder.

Magnetism of the 2D honeycomb layered Na2Ni2TeO6 compound driven by intermediate Na-layer crystal-structure

The microscopic spin-spin correlations in the 2D layered spin-1 honeycomb lattice compound Na2Ni2TeO6 have been investigated by neutron diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering. The honeycomb lattice of spin-1 Ni2+ ions, within the crystallographic ab planes, are well separated along the c axis by an intermediate Na layer whose crystal structure contains chiral nuclear density distributions of Na ions. The chirality of the alternating Na layers is opposite. Such alternating chirality of the Na layer dictates the magnetic periodicity along the c axis where an up-up-down-down spin arrangement of the in-plane zigzag AFM structure is found. Besides, the above described commensurate (CM) zigzag AFM order state is found to coexist with an incommensurate (ICM) AFM state below the TN ~ 27.5 K. The ICM state is found to appear at much higher temperature ~ 50 K and persists down to lowest measured temperature of 1.7 K. Our reverse Monte Carlo (RMC) analysis divulges a two dimensional (2D) magnetic correlations (within the ab plane) of the ICM AFM state over the entire temperature range 1.7-50 K. Further, the spin-Hamiltonian has been determined by carrying out inelastic neutron scattering experiments and subsequent linear spin-wave theory analysis which reveals the presence of competing inplane exchange interactions up to 3 rd nearest neighbours consistent with the zigzag AFM ground state, and weak interplanar interaction as well as a weak single-ion-anisotropy. The values of the exchange constants yield that Na2Ni2TeO6 is situated well inside the zigzag AFM phase (spans over a wide ranges of J2/J1 and J3/J1 values) in the theoretical phase diagram. The present study, thus, provides a detailed microscopic understanding of the magnetic correlations and divulges the intertwining magneto-structural correlations.

Excitations in the spin-1 trimer chain compound CaNi3P4O14: gapped dispersive spinwaves to gapless magnetic excitations

Magnetic excitations and the spin Hamiltonian of the spin-1 J1-J1-J2 trimer chain compound CaNi3P4O14 have been investigated by inelastic neutron scattering. Experimental data reveal gapped dispersive spin wave excitations in the 3D long-range ordered magnetic state (TC = 16 K), and gapless magnetic excitations above the TC. Simulated magnetic excitations, by using the linear spin wave theory, for a model of coupled trimer spin-chains provide a good description of the observed experimental data. The analysis reveals both ferromagnetic J1 and J2 interactions within the chains, and an antiferromagnetic interchain interaction J3 between chains. The strengths of the J1 and J2 are found to be closer (J2/J1 ~ 0.81), and J3 is determined to be weaker (J3/ J1 ~ 0.69), which is consistent with the spin chain type crystal structure. Presence of a weak single-ion-anisotropy (D/J=0.19) is also revealed. The strengths and signs of exchange interactions explain why the 1/3 magnetization is absent in the studied spin-1 compound CaNi3P4O14 in contrast to its S= 5/2 counterpart Mn based isostructural compound. The signs of the exchange interactions are in agreement with that obtained from the reported DFT calculations, whereas, their strengths are found to be significantly different. The relatively strong value of the J3 in CaNi3P4O14 gives a conventional 3D type magnetic ordering below the TC, however, retains its 1D character above the TC. The present experimental study also reveals a sharp change of single-ion anisotropy across the TC indicating that the stability of the 3D magnetic ordering in CaNi3P4O14 is ascribed to the local magnetic anisotropy in addition to interchain interactions. The present study divulges the importance of full knowledge of the exchange interactions in trimer spin chain compounds to understand their exotic magnetic properties, such as 1/3 magnetization plateau.

Temperature Dependent Na-ion Conduction and its Pathways in the Crystal Structure of the Layered Battery Material Na$_2$Ni$_2$TeO$_6$

Na-ion conduction, and correlations between Na-ion conduction pathways and crystal structure have been investigated as a function of temperature in the layered battery material Na2Ni2TeO6 by impedance spectroscopy and neutron diffraction, respectively. The impedance data reveal an ionic conductivity 2x10-4 S/m at 323 K which strongly enhances with increasing temperature and attains a high value of ~ 0.03 S/m at 423 K. The temperature dependent conductivity data show an Arrhenius type behavior with average activation energy (Ea) of ~ 0.58(3) eV for T > 383 K. By employing soft-bond valence sum analysis of the neutron diffraction patterns we experimentally demonstrate the site-specific Na-ion conductions, through visualization of microscopic sodium-ion conduction pathways, and verify the recent theoretical results of Molecular dynamic simulation. Our results reveal two-dimensional Na-ion conduction pathways that are confined within the ab planes of Na layers. Crystal structural study indicates that the layered structure involving Na ion layers is responsible for high ionic conductivity, and the local crystallographic environment of Na ion sites is responsible for site-specific conductivity. Our study further reveals that up to 500 K, the ionic conduction is governed by the Na ions located at the Na1 and Na2 sites, whereas, all the Na ions located at the three Na-sites contribute to the conduction process above 500 K. Our neutron diffraction study also establishes that the crystal structure of Na2Ni2TeO6 is stable at least up to 725 K (the highest measured temperature), however, with an anisotropic thermal expansion (c/a ~ 3).

Long-range and short-range magnetic correlations, and microscopic origin of net magnetization in the spin-1 trimer chain compound CaNi3P4O14

Spin-spin correlations and microscopic origin of net magnetization in the spin-1 trimer chain compound CaNi3P4O14 have been investigated by powder neutron diffraction. The present study reveals a 3D long-range magnetic ordering below 16 K where the magnetic structure consists of ferromagnetic trimers that are coupled ferromagnetically along the spin-chain. The moment components along the a and c axes arrange antiferromagnetically. Our study establishes that the uncompensated moment components along the b axis result in a net magnetization per unit cell. The magnetic structure, determined in the present study, is in agreement with the results of recent first principles calculation; however, it is in contrast to a fascinating experimental prediction of ferrimagnetic ordering based on the periodicity of the exchange interactions in CaNi3P4O14. Our study also confirms the presence of broad diffuse magnetic scattering, due to 1D short-range spin-spin correlations, over a wide temperature range below ~50 K down to a temperature well below the Tc. Total neutron scattering analysis by the RMC method reveals that the dominating spin-spin correlation above Tc is ferromagnetic and along the b axis. The nearest neighbour spin-spin correlations along the a and c axes are found to be weakly antiferromagnetic. The nature of the trimer spin structure of the short-range state is similar to that of the 3D long-range ordered state. The present investigation of microscopic nature of the magnetic ground state also explains the condition required for the 1/3 magnetization plateau to be observed in the trimer spin-chains. In spite of the S=1 trimer chain system, the present compound CaNi3P4O14 is found to be a good realization of 3D magnet below the Tc=16 K with full ordered moment values of ~2 mu_B/Ni2+ (1.98 and 1.96 mu_B/Ni2+ for two Ni sites, respectively) at 1.5 K.

Non-collinear antiferromagnetism of coupled spins and pseudospins in the double perovskite La2CuIrO6

We report the structural, magnetic and thermodynamic properties of the double perovskite compound La2CuIrO6 from X-ray, neutron diffraction, neutron depolarization, dc magnetization, ac susceptibility, specific heat, muon-spin-relaxation (uSR), electron-spin-resonance (ESR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements. Below ~113 K, short-range spin-spin correlations occur within the Cu2+ sublattice. With decreasing temperature, the Ir4+ sublattice progressively involves in the correlation process. Below T = 74 K, the magnetic sublattices of Cu (spin s = 1/2) and Ir (pseudospin j = 1/2) in La2CuIrO6 are strongly coupled and exhibit an antiferromagnetic phase transition into a non-collinear magnetic structure accompanied by a small uncompensated transverse moment. A weak anomaly in ac-susceptibility as well as in the NMR and μSR spin lattice relaxation rates at 54 K is interpreted as a cooperative ordering of the transverse moments which is influenced by the strong spin-orbit coupled 5d ion Ir4+. We argue that the rich magnetic behaviour observed in La2CuIrO6 is related to complex magnetic interactions between the strongly correlated spin-only 3d ions with the strongly spin-orbit coupled 5d transition ions where a combination of the spin-orbit coupling and the low-symmetry of the crystal lattice plays a special role for the spin structure in the magnetically ordered state.

Consequences of critical interchain couplings and anisotropy on a Haldane chain

Effects of interchain couplings and anisotropy on a Haldane chain have been investigated by single crystal inelastic neutron scattering and density functional theory (DFT) calculations on the model compound SrNi$_2$V$_2$O$_8$. Significant effects on low energy excitation spectra are found where the Haldane gap ($Δ_0 \approx 0.41J$; where $J$ is the intrachain exchange interaction) is replaced by three energy minima at different antiferromagnetic zone centers due to the complex interchain couplings. Further, the triplet states are split into two branches by single-ion anisotropy. Quantitative information on the intrachain and interchain interactions as well as on the single-ion anisotropy are obtained from the analyses of the neutron scattering spectra by the random phase approximation (RPA) method. The presence of multiple competing interchain interactions is found from the analysis of the experimental spectra and is also confirmed by the DFT calculations. The interchain interactions are two orders of magnitude weaker than the nearest-neighbour intrachain interaction $J$ = 8.7~meV. The DFT calculations reveal that the dominant intrachain nearest-neighbor interaction occurs via nontrivial extended superexchange pathways Ni--O--V--O--Ni involving the empty $d$ orbital of V ions. The present single crystal study also allows us to correctly position SrNi$_2$V$_2$O$_8$ in the theoretical $D$-$J_{\perp}$ phase diagram [T. Sakai and M. Takahashi, Phys. Rev. B 42, 4537 (1990)] showing where it lies within the spin-liquid phase.

Controlling structural distortion in the geometrically frustrated layered cobaltate YBaCo4O7+δ by Fe substitution and its role on magnetic correlations

Effects of Fe-substitution on the crystal structure and magnetic correlations of the geometrically frustrated antiferromagnets YBaCo4-xFexO7+δ (x = 0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6, and 0.8) have been studied by neutron diffraction, Mössbauer spectroscopy, and ac susceptibility. The compounds YBaCo4-xFexO7+δ have a special layered-type crystal structure with an alternating Kagomé (6c site) and triangular (2a site) layers along the c axis. Fe3+ ions are found to be substituted at both the crystallographic 2a and 6c sites of Co ions. Mössbauer results show a high spin state of Fe3+ ions in a tetrahedral coordination. A reduction in the distortion of the Kagomé lattice has been observed with the Fe-substitution. The correlation length of the short-range antiferromagnetic ordering decreases with the Fe-substitution. The sharpness of the magnetic transition also decreases with the Fe-substitution.

Investigation of the magnetic structure and crystal field states of pyrochlore antiferromagnet Nd2Zr2O7

We present synchrotron x-ray diffraction, neutron powder diffraction and time-of-flight inelastic neutron scattering measurements on the rare earth pyrochlore oxide Nd2Zr2O7 to study the ordered state magnetic structure and cystal field states. The structural characterization by high-resolution synchrotron x-ray diffraction confirms that the pyrochlore structure has no detectable O vacancies or Nd/Zr site mixing. The neutron diffraction reveals long range all-in/all-out antiferromagnetic order below T_N ~ 0.4 K with propagation vector k = (0 0 0) and an ordered moment of 1.26(2) μ_B/Nd at 0.1 K. The ordered moment is much smaller than the estimated moment of 2.65 μ_B/Nd for the local <111> Ising ground state of Nd3+ (J=9/2) suggesting that the ordering is partially suppressed by quantum fluctuations. The strong Ising anisotropy is further confirmed by the inelastic neutron scattering data which reveals a well-isolated dipolar-octupolar type Kramers doublet ground state. The crystal field level scheme and ground state wavefunction have been determined.

Observation of long range magnetic ordering in pyrohafnate Nd2Hf2O7: A neutron diffraction study

We have investigated the physical properties of a pyrochlore hafnate Nd2Hf2O7 using ac magnetic susceptibility χ_ac(T), dc magnetic susceptibility χ(T), isothermal magnetization M(H) and heat capacity C_p(T) measurements, and determined the magnetic ground state by neutron powder diffraction study. An upturn is observed below 6 K in C_p(T)/T, however both C_p(T) and χ(T) do not show any clear anomaly down to 2 K. The χ_ac(T) shows a well pronounced anomaly indicating an antiferromagnetic transition at T_N = 0.55 K. The long range antiferromagnetic ordering is confirmed by neutron diffraction. The refinement of neutron diffraction pattern reveals an all-in/all-out antiferromagnetic structure, where for successive tetrahedra, the four Nd3+ magnetic moments point alternatively all-into or all-out-of the tetrahedron, with an ordering wavevector k = (0, 0, 0) and an ordered state magnetic moment of m = 0.62(1) μ_B/Nd at 0.1 K. The ordered moment is strongly reduced reflecting strong quantum fluctuations in ordered state.

Short-range Magnetic Ordering in the Geometrically Frustrated Layered Compound YBaCo4O7 with an Extended Kagomé Structure

Structural and magnetic properties of the geometrically frustrated layered compound YBaCo4O7 have been studied by magnetization and neutron diffraction. A layered type crystal structure, with alternating tetrahedral layers of Kagomé and triangular types, along the c axis (hexagonal symmetry, space group P63mc) has been found. The oxygen content of the present compound was determined by iodometric titration to be 7.00{\pm}0.01. Presence of a short-range antiferromagnetic ordering (below TN ~ 110 K) has been concluded from the appearance of an addition broad magnetic peak (at Q ~ 1.35 Å-1) in the neutron diffraction pattern. A staggered chiral type (\sqrt{3}\mult \sqrt{3} ) spin structure in the Kagomé layers has been found. Presence of a significant magneto-structural coupling is concluded from the changes in lattice parameters across the magnetic ordering temperature TN ~ 110 K.

Spinon Confinement in the One-Dimensional Ising-Like Antiferromagnet SrCo2V2O8

For quasi-one dimensional quantum spin systems theory predicts the occurrence of a confinement of spinon excitation due to interchain couplings. Here we investigate the system SrCo2V2O8, a realization of the weakly-coupled Ising-like XXZ antiferromagnetic chains, by terahertz spectroscopy with and without applied magnetic field. At low temperatures a series of excitations is observed, which split in a Zeeman-like fashion in an applied magnetic field. These magnetic excitations are identified as the theoretically predicted spinon-pair excitations. Using a one dimensional Schrödinger equation with a linear confinement potential imposed by weak interchain couplings, the hierarchy of the confined spinons can be fully described.

Magnetic correlations of the quasi-one-dimensional half-integer spin-chain antiferromagnets Sr$M_2$V$_2$O$_8$ ($M$ = Co, Mn)

Magnetic correlations of two iso-structural quasi-one-dimensional (1D) antiferromagnetic spin-chain compounds Sr$M_2$V$_2$O$_8$ ($M$ = Co, Mn) have been investigated by magnetization and powder neutron diffraction. Two different collinear antiferromagnetic (AFM) structures, characterized by the propagation vectors, $k$ = (0 0 1) and $k$ = (0 0 0), have been found below $\sim$ 5.2 K and $\sim$ 42.2 K for the Co- and Mn-compounds, respectively. For the Mn-compound, AFM chains (along the $c$ axis) order ferromagnetically within the $ab$ plane, whereas, for the Co-compound, AFM chains order ferro-/antiferromagnetically along the $a/b$ direction. The critical exponent study confirms that the Co- and Mn-compounds belong to the Ising and Heisenberg universality classes, respectively. For both compounds, short-range spin-spin correlations are present over a wide temperature range above $T_N$. The reduced ordered moments at base temperature (1.5 K) indicate the presence of quantum fluctuations in both compounds due to the quasi-1D magnetic interactions.

Understanding the multiple magnetic structures of the intermetallic compound NdMn1.4Co0.6Si2

Magnetic phases for the intermetallic compound NdMn1.4Co0.6Si2 have been investigated at various temperatures by dc magnetization, neutron diffraction and neutron depolarization. Our study shows multiple magnetic phase transitions with temperature (T) over 1.5-300 K. In agreement with dc-magnetization and neutron depolarization results, the temperature dependence of the neutron diffraction patterns shows five distinct regions with different magnetic phases. These temperature regions are (i) T >= 215 K, (ii) 215 K > T >= 50 K, (iii) 50 K > T >= 40 K, (iv) 40 K > T > 15 K, and (v) T =< 15 K. The corresponding magnetic structures are paramagnetic, commensurate collinear antiferromagnetic (AFM-I), incommensurate AFM (AFM-II), mixed ferromagnetic and AFM (FM+AFM-II), and incommensurate AFM (AFM-II), respectively.

Field Induced Magnetic Ordering and Single-ion Anisotropy in the Quasi-1D Haldane Chain Compound SrNi2V2O8: A Single Crystal investigation

Field-induced magnetic ordering in the Haldane chain compound SrNi$_{2}$V$_{2}$O$_{8}$ and effect of anisotropy have been investigated using single crystals. Static susceptibility, inelastic neutron scattering, high-field magnetization, and low temperature heat-capacity studies confirm a non-magnetic spin-singlet ground state and a gap between the singlet ground state and triplet excited states. The intra-chain exchange interaction is estimated to be $J \sim 8.9{\pm}$0.1 meV. Splitting of the dispersions into two modes with minimum energies 1.57 and 2.58 meV confirms the existence of single-ion anisotropy $D(S^z){^2}$. The value of {\it D} is estimated to be $-0.51{\pm}0.01$ meV and the easy axis is found to be along the crystallographic {\it c}-axis. Field-induced magnetic ordering has been found with two critical fields [$μ_0H_c^{\perp c} = 12.0{\pm}$0.2 T and $μ_0H_c^{\parallel c} = 20.8{\pm}$0.5 T at 4.2 K]. Field-induced three-dimensional magnetic ordering above the critical fields is evident from the heat-capacity, susceptibility, and high-field magnetization study. The Phase diagram in the {\it H-T} plane has been obtained from the high-field magnetization. The observed results are discussed in the light of theoretical predictions as well as earlier experimental reports on Haldane chain compounds.

Low-energy magnetic excitations in the quasi-one-dimensional spin-1 chain compound SrNi2V2O8

Multi-frequency electron spin resonance (ESR) transmission spectra have been measured as function of temperature and magnetic field on single crystals of the quasi-one-dimensional spin-1 chain compound SrNi2V2O8 in the GHz frequency range. Magnetic resonance modes above 50 K have been observed with an effective g-factor of 2.24 at 100 K. Below 30 K, intra-triplet excitations have been observed in the ESR spectra, which reveal the presence of single-ion anisotropy with D = -0.29 meV.

Effect of electron doping on the magnetic correlations in the bilayered brownmillerite compound Ca_{2.5-x}La_{x}Sr_{0.5}GaMn_{2}O_{8}: a neutron diffraction study

The effect of electron doping on the magnetic properties of the Brownmillerite-type bilayered compounds has been investigated by neutron powder diffraction in La substituted Ca2.5-xLaxSr0.5GaMn2O8 compounds (x = 0.05 and 0.1), in comparison with the undoped compound (x = 0). In all compounds, a long-range three dimensional collinear antiferromagnetic (AFM) structure is found below the Néel temperature TN of respective compound, whereas, well above TN, three dimensional short-range magnetic ordering is observed. In the intermediate temperature range just above TN, a strong effect of electron doping (La substitution) on the magnetic correlations has been observed. Here, a short-range AFM correlation with possible dimensionality of three has been found for substituted compounds (x = 0.05 and 0.1) as compared to the reported two dimensional long-range AFM ordering in the parent compound. With increasing the electron doping, a decrease in TN is also observed. The short-range magnetic correlations set in over a large temperature range above TN. A magnetic phase diagram in the x-T plane is proposed from these results.

Quantum Phase Transition from a Spin-liquid State to a Spin-glass State in the Quasi-1D Spin-1 System Sr1-xCaxNi2V2O8

We report a quantum phase transition from a spin-liquid state to a spin-glass state in the quasi-one dimensional (1D) spin-1 system Sr1-xCaxNi2V2O8, induced by a small amount of Ca-substitution at Sr site. The ground state of the parent compound (x = 0) is found to be a spin-liquid type with a finite energy gap of 26.6 K between singlet ground state and triplet excited state. Both dc-magnetization and ac-susceptibility studies on the highest Ca-substituted compound (x = 0.05) indicate a spin-glass type magnetic ground state. With increasing Ca-concentration, the spin-glass ordering temperature increases from 4.5 K (for the x = 0.015 compound) to 6.25 K (for the x = 0.05 compound). The observed results are discussed in the light of the earlier experimental reports and the theoretical predictions for a quasi-1D spin-1 system.

Effect of size reduction on the ferromagnetism of the manganite La1-xCaxMnO3 (x = 0.33)

In this paper we report an investigation on the ferromagnetic state and the nature of ferromagnetic transition of nanoparticles of $\mathrm{La_{0.67}Ca_{0.33}MnO_3}$ using magnetic measurements and neutron diffraction. The investigation was made on nanoparticles with crystal size down to $15$ nm. The neutron data show that even down to a size of $15$ nm the nanoparticles show finite spontaneous magnetization ($M_S$) although the value is much reduced compared to the bulk sample. We observed a non-monotonic variation of the ferromagnetic to paramagnetic transition temperature $T_C$ with size $d$ and found that $T_C$ initially enhances on size reduction, but for $d < 50$ nm it decreases again. The initial enhancement in $T_C$ was related to an increase in the bandwidth that occured due to a compaction of the Mn-O bond length and a straightening of the Mn-O-Mn bond angle, as determined form the neutron data. The size reduction also changes the nature of the ferromagnetic to paramagnetic transition from first order to second order with critical exponents approaching mean field values. This was explained as arising from a truncation of the coherence length by the finite sample size.

Ferromagnetic Clusters in the Brownmillerite Bilayered Compounds Ca2.5-xLaxSr0.5GaMn2O8: An Approach to Achieve Layered Spintronics Materials

We report the effect of La-substitution on the magnetic and magnetotransport properties of Brownmillerite-like bilayered compounds Ca2.5-xLaxSr0.5GaMn2O8 (x = 0, 0.05, 0.075, and 0.1) by using dc-magnetization, resistivity and magnetoresistance techniques. The Rietveld analysis of the room temperature x-ray diffraction patterns confirms no observable change of average crystal structure with the La-substitution. Both magnetic and magnetotransport properties are found to be very sensitive to the La-substitution. Interestingly, the La-substituted compounds show ferromagnetic-like behavior (due to the occurrence of a double exchange mechanism) whereas, the parent compound is an antiferromagnet (TN 150 K). All compounds show an insulating behavior, in the measured temperature range of 100 - 300 K, with an overall decrease in the resistivity with the substitution. A higher value of magnetoresistance has been successfully achieved by the La-substitution. We have proposed an electronic phase separation model, considering the formation of ferromagnetic clusters in the antiferromagnetic matrix, to interpret the observed magnetization and magnetotransport results for the La-substituted samples. The present study demonstrates an approach to achieve new functional materials, based on naturally occurring layered system like Ca2.5-xLaxSr0.5GaMn2O8, for possible spintronics applications.

Influence of lattice distortion on the Curie temperature and spin-phonon coupling in LaMn$_{0.5}$Co$_{0.5}$O$_{3}$

Two distinct ferromagnetic phases of LaMn$_{0.5}$Co$_{0.5}$O$_{3}$ having monoclinic structure with distinct physical properties have been studied. The ferromagnetic ordering temperature $\textit{T}_{c}$ is found to be different for both the phases. The origin of such contrasting characteristics is assigned to the changes in the distance(s) and angle(s) between Mn - O - Co resulting from distortions observed from neutron diffraction studies. Investigations on the temperature dependent Raman spectroscopy provide evidence for such structural characteristics, which affects the exchange interaction. The difference in B-site ordering which is evident from the neutron diffraction is also responsible for the difference in $\textit{T}_{c}$. Raman scattering suggests the presence of spin-phonon coupling for both the phases around the $\textit{T}_{c}$. Electrical transport properties of both the phases have been investigated based on the lattice distortion.

Two- and three-dimensional magnetic correlations in the spin-1/2 square-lattice system Zn2VO(PO4)2

The magnetic correlations in the quasi-two dimensional spin-1/2 square-lattice system Zn2VO(PO4)2 have been investigated by neutron diffraction technique. A long-range antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering below 3.75 K (TN) has been observed with a reduced moment of 0.66(2) μB per V ion at 1.5 K. In a given ab plane, the AFM spin arrangement is Néel type and the AFM layers are coupled ferromagnetically along the c axis. Remarkably, we have observed a pure 2D short-range AFM ordering in the ab plane above TN. Interestingly, the coexistence of diffuse magnetic scattering and three dimensional antiferromagnetic Bragg peaks has been found below TN, indicating the presence of spin-waves as confirmed by our calculation using the linear spin-wave theory. The observed results are discussed in the light of existing theory for a two-dimensional spin-1/2 square-lattice system.
