Invariant subspaces and explicit Bethe vectors in the integrable open spin $1/2$ $\XYZ$ chain

We derive a criterion under which splitting of all eigenstates of an open $\XYZ$ Hamiltonian with boundary fields into two invariant subspaces, spanned by chiral shock states, occurs. The splitting is governed by an integer number, which has the geometrical meaning of the maximal number of kinks in the basis states. We describe the generic structure of the respective Bethe vectors. We obtain explicit expressions for Bethe vectors, in the absence of Bethe roots, and those generated by one Bethe root, and investigate the \multiplet. We also describe in detail an elliptic analogue of the spin-helix state, appearing in both the periodic and the open $\XYZ$ model, and derive the eigenstate condition. The elliptic analogue of the spin-helix state is characterized by a quasi-periodic modulation of the magnetization profile, governed by Jacobi elliptic functions.

Boundary driven $XYZ$ chain: Exact inhomogeneous triangular matrix product ansatz

We construct an explicit matrix product ansatz for the steady state of a boundary driven $XY\!Z$ spin-$\tfrac{1}{2}$ chain for arbitrary local polarizing channels at the chain's ends. The ansatz, where the Lax operators are written explicitly in terms of infinite-dimensional bidiagonal (triangular) site-dependent matrices, becomes exact either in the (Zeno) limit of infinite dissipation strength, or thermodynamic limit of infinite chain length. The solution is based on an extension of the newly discovered family of separable eigenstates of the model.

Chiral coordinate Bethe ansatz for phantom eigenstates in the open XXZ spin-$\frac12$ chain

We construct the coordinate Bethe ansatz for all eigenstates of the open spin-$\frac12$ XXZ chain that fulfill the phantom roots criterion (PRC). Under the PRC, the Hilbert space splits into two invariant subspaces and there are two sets of homogeneous Bethe ansatz equations (BAE) to characterize the subspaces in each case. We propose two sets of vectors with chiral shocks to span the invariant subspaces and expand the corresponding eigenstates. All the vectors are factorized and have symmetrical and simple structures. Using several simple cases as examples, we present the core elements of our generalized coordinate Bethe ansatz method. The eigenstates are expanded in our generating set and show clear chirality and certain symmetry properties. The bulk scattering matrices, the reflection matrices on the two boundaries and the BAE are obtained, which demonstrates the agreement with other approaches. Some hypotheses are formulated for the generalization of our approach.

Dissipative generation of pure steady states and a gambler's ruin problem

We consider an open quantum system, with dissipation applied only to a part of its degrees of freedom, evolving via a quantum Markov dynamics. We demonstrate that, in the Zeno regime of large dissipation, the relaxation of the quantum system towards a pure quantum state is linked to the evolution of a classical Markov process towards a single absorbing state. The rates of the associated classical Markov process are determined by the original quantum dynamics. Extension of this correspondence to absorbing states with internal structure allows us to establish a general criterion for having a Zeno-limit nonequilibrium stationary state of arbitrary finite rank. An application of this criterion is illustrated in the case of an open XXZ spin-1/2 chain dissipatively coupled at its edges to baths with fixed and different polarizations. For this system, we find exact nonequilibrium steady-state solutions of ranks 1 and 2.

Exact nonequilibrium steady state of open XXZ/XYZ spin-1/2 chain with Dirichlet boundary conditions

We investigate a dissipatively driven XYZ spin-1/2 chain in the Zeno limit of strong dissipation, described by Lindblad master equation. The nonequilibrium steady state is expressed in terms of a matrix product ansatz using novel site-dependent Lax operators. The components of Lax operators satisfy a simple set of linear recurrence equations that generalize the defining algebraic relations of the quantum group $U_q(sl_2)$. We reveal connection between the nonequilibrium steady state of the nonunitary dynamics and the respective integrable model with edge magnetic fields, described by coherent unitary dynamics.

Inhomogeneous MPA and exact steady states of boundary driven spin chains at large dissipation

We find novel site-dependent Lax operators in terms of which we demonstrate exact solvability of a dissipatively driven XYZ spin-1/2 chain in the Zeno limit of strong dissipation, with jump operators polarizing the boundary spins in arbitrary directions. We write the corresponding nonequilibrium steady state using an inhomogeneous MPA, where the constituent matrices satisfy a simple set of linear recurrence relations. Although these matrices can be embedded into an infinite-dimensional auxiliary space, we have verified that they cannot be simultaneously put into a tridiagonal form, not even in the case of axially symmetric (XXZ) bulk interactions and general nonlongitudinal boundary dissipation. We expect our results to have further fundamental applications for the construction of nonlocal integrals of motion for the open XYZ model with arbitrary boundary fields, or the eight-vertex model.

Transition between dissipatively stabilized helical states

We analyze a $XXZ$ spin-1/2 chain which is driven dissipatively at its boundaries. The dissipative driving is modelled by Lindblad jump operators which only act on both boundary spins. In the limit of large dissipation, we find that the boundary spins are pinned to a certain value and at special values of the interaction anisotropy, the steady states are formed by a rank-2 mixture of helical states with opposite winding numbers. Contrarily to previous stabilization of topological states, these helical states are not protected by a gap in the spectrum of the Lindbladian. By changing the anisotropy, the transition between these steady states takes place via mixed states of higher rank. In particular, crossing the value of zero anisotropy a totally mixed state is found as the steady state. The transition between the different winding numbers via mixed states can be seen in the light of the transitions between different topological states in dissipatively driven systems. The results are obtained developing a perturbation theory in the inverse dissipative coupling strength and using the numerical exact diagonalization and matrix product state methods.

Exact scaling solution of the mode coupling equations for non-linear fluctuating hydrodynamics in one dimension

We obtain the exact solution of the one-loop mode-coupling equations for the dynamical structure function in the framework of non-linear fluctuating hydrodynamics in one space dimension for the strictly hyperbolic case where all characteristic velocities are different. All solutions are characterized by dynamical exponents which are Kepler ratios of consecutive Fibonacci numbers, which includes the golden mean as a limiting case. The scaling form of all higher Fibonacci modes are asymmetric Lévy-distributions. Thus a hierarchy of new dynamical universality classes is established. We also compute the precise numerical value of the Prähofer-Spohn scaling constant to which scaling functions obtained from mode coupling theory are sensitive.

Obtaining pure steady states in nonequilibrium quantum systems with strong dissipative couplings

Dissipative preparation of a pure steady state usually involves a commutative action of a coherent and a dissipative dynamics on the target state. Namely, the target pure state is an eigenstate of both the coherent and dissipative parts of the dynamics. We show that working in the Zeno regime, i.e. for infinitely large dissipative coupling, one can generate a pure state by a non commutative action, in the above sense, of the coherent and dissipative dynamics. A corresponding Zeno regime pureness criterion is derived. We illustrate the approach, looking at both its theoretical and applicative aspects, in the example case of an open $XXZ$ spin-$1/2$ chain, driven out of equilibrium by boundary reservoirs targeting different spin orientations. Using our criterion, we find two families of pure nonequilibrium steady states, in the Zeno regime, and calculate the dissipative strengths effectively needed to generate steady states which are almost indistinguishable from the target pure states.

Defect-induced phase transition in the asymmetric simple exclusion process

We reconsider the long-standing question of the critical defect hopping rate $r_c$ in the one-dimensional totally asymmetric exclusion process (TASEP) with a slow bond (defect). For $r< r_c$ a phase separated state is observed due to queuing at the defect site whereas for $r\geq r_c$ the defect site has only local effects on the stationary state of the homogeneous system. Mean-field theory predicts $r_c=1$ (when hopping rates outside the defect bond are equal to 1) but numerical investigations seem to indicate $r_c \approx 0.80(2)$. Here we improve the numerics to show that $r_c > 0.99$ and give strong evidence that indeed $r_c=1$ as predicted by mean-field theory, and anticipated by recent theoretical findings.

Fibonacci family of dynamical universality classes

Universality is a well-established central concept of equilibrium physics. However, in systems far away from equilibrium a deeper understanding of its underlying principles is still lacking. Up to now, a few classes have been identified. Besides the diffusive universality class with dynamical exponent $z=2$ another prominent example is the superdiffusive Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) class with $z=3/2$. It appears e.g. in low-dimensional dynamical phenomena far from thermal equilibrium which exhibit some conservation law. Here we show that both classes are only part of an infinite discrete family of non-equilibrium universality classes. Remarkably their dynamical exponents $z_α$ are given by ratios of neighbouring Fibonacci numbers, starting with either $z_1=3/2$ (if a KPZ mode exist) or $z_1=2$ (if a diffusive mode is present). If neither a diffusive nor a KPZ mode are present, all dynamical modes have the Golden Mean $z=(1+\sqrt{5})/2$ as dynamical exponent. The universal scaling functions of these Fibonacci modes are asymmetric Lévy distributions which are completely fixed by the macroscopic current-density relation and compressibility matrix of the system and hence accessible to experimental measurement.

Infinitely dimensional Lax structure for one-dimensional Hubbard model

We report a two-parametric irreducible infinitely dimensional representation of the Lax integrability condition for the fermi Hubbard chain. Besides being of fundamental interest, hinting on possible novel quantum symmetry of the model, our construction allows for an explicit representation of an exact steady state many-body density operator for non-equilibrium boundary-driven Hubbard chain with arbitrary (asymmetric) particle source/sink rates at the letf/right end of the chain and with arbitrary boundary values of chemical potentials.

When is a bottleneck a bottleneck?

Bottlenecks, i.e. local reductions of capacity, are one of the most relevant scenarios of traffic systems. The asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) with a defect is a minimal model for such a bottleneck scenario. One crucial question is "What is the critical strength of the defect that is required to create global effects, i.e. traffic jams localized at the defect position". Intuitively one would expect that already an arbitrarily small bottleneck strength leads to global effects in the system, e.g. a reduction of the maximal current. Therefore it came as a surprise when, based on computer simulations, it was claimed that the reaction of the system depends in non-continuous way on the defect strength and weak defects do not have a global influence on the system. Here we reconcile intuition and simulations by showing that indeed the critical defect strength is zero. We discuss the implications for the analysis of empirical and numerical data.

Full decoherence induced by local fields in open spin chains with strong boundary couplings

We investigate an open $XYZ$ spin $1/2$ chain driven out of equilibrium by boundary reservoirs targeting different spin orientations, aligned along the principal axes of anisotropy. We show that by tuning local magnetic fields, applied to spins at sites near the boundaries, one can change any nonequilibrium steady state to a fully uncorrelated Gibbsian state at infinite temperature. This phenomenon occurs for strong boundary coupling and on a critical manifold in the space of the fields amplitudes. The structure of this manifold depends on the anisotropy degree of the model and on the parity of the chain size.

Non-KPZ modes in two-species driven diffusive systems

Using mode coupling theory and dynamical Monte-Carlo simulations we investigate the scaling behaviour of the dynamical structure function of a two-species asymmetric simple exclusion process, consisting of two coupled single-lane asymmetric simple exclusion processes. We demonstrate the appearence of a superdiffusive mode with dynamical exponent $z=5/3$ in the density fluctuations, along with a KPZ mode with $z=3/2$ and argue that this phenomenon is generic for short-ranged driven diffusive systems with more than one conserved density. When the dynamics is symmetric under the interchange of the two lanes a diffusive mode with $z=2$ appears instead of the non-KPZ superdiffusive mode.

Unusual shock wave in two-species driven systems with an umbilic point

Using dynamical Monte-Carlo simulations we observe the occurrence of an unexpected shock wave in driven diffusive systems with two conserved species of particles. This U-shock is microscopically sharp, but does not satisfy the usual criteria for the stability of shocks. Exact analysis of the large-scale hydrodynamic equations of motion reveals the presence of an umbilical point which we show to be responsible for this phenomenon. We prove that such an umbilical point is a general feature of multi-species driven diffusive systems with reflection symmetry of the bulk dynamics. We argue that an U-shock will occur whenever there are strong repulsive interactions such that the current-density relation develops a double-well and the umbilical point becomes isolated.

Exterior integrability: Yang-Baxter form of nonequilibrium steady state density operator

A new type of quantum transfer matrix, arising as a Cholesky factor for the steady state density matrix of a dissipative Markovian process associated with the boundary-driven Lindblad equation for the isotropic spin-1/2 Heisenberg (XXX) chain, is presented. The transfer matrix forms a commuting family of non-Hermitian operators depending on the spectral parameter which is essentially the strength of dissipative coupling at the boundaries. The intertwining of the corresponding Lax and monodromy matrices is performed by an infinitely dimensional Yang-Baxter R-matrix which we construct explicitly and which is essentially different from the standard XXX R-matrix. We also discuss a possibility to construct Bethe Ansatz for the spectrum and eigenstates of the non-equilibrium steady state density operator. Furthermore, we indicate the existence of a deformed R-matrix in the infinitely-dimensional auxiliary space for the anisotropic XXZ spin-1/2 chain which in general provides a sequence of new, possibly quasi-local, conserved quantities of the bulk XXZ dynamics.

Singular response to a dopant of an evaporating crystal surface

Moving crystal surfaces can undergo step-bunching instabilities, when subject to an electric current. We show analytically that an infinitesimal quantity of a dopant may invert the stability, whatever the sign of the current. Our study is relevant for experimental results [S. S. Kosolobov et al., JETP Lett. 81, 117 (2005)] on an evaporating Si(111) surface, which show a singular response to Au doping, whose density distribution is related to inhomogeneous Si diffusion.

Anti-Coarsening and Complex Dynamics of Step Bunches on Vicinal Surfaces during Sublimation

A sublimating vicinal crystal surface can undergo a step bunching instability when the attachment-detachment kinetics is asymmetric, in the sense of a normal Ehrlich-Schwoebel effect. Here we investigate this instability in a model that takes into account the subtle interplay between sublimation and step-step interactions, which breaks the volume-conserving character of the dynamics assumed in previous work. On the basis of a systematically derived continuum equation for the surface profile, we argue that the non-conservative terms pose a limitation on the size of emerging step bunches. This conclusion is supported by extensive simulations of the discrete step dynamics, which show breakup of large bunches into smaller ones as well as arrested coarsening and periodic oscillations between states with different numbers of bunches.

Asymmetric simple exclusion process on a ring conditioned on enhanced flux

We show that in the asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) on a ring, conditioned on carrying a large flux, the particle experience an effective long-range potential which in the limit of very large flux takes the simple form $U= -2\sum_{i\neq j}\log|\sinπ(n_{i}/L-n_{j}/L)|$, where $n_{1}% n_{2},\ldots n_{N}$ are the particle positions, similar to the effective potential between the eigenvalues of the circular unitary ensemble in random matrices. Effective hopping rates and various quasistationary probabilities under such a conditioning are found analytically using the Bethe ansatz and determinantal free fermion techniques. Our asymptotic results extend to the limit of large current and large activity for a family of reaction-diffusion processes with on-site exclusion between particles. We point out an intriguing generic relation between classical stationary probability distributions for conditioned dynamics and quantum ground state wave functions, in particular, in the case of exclusion processes, for free fermions.

Hierarchy of boundary driven phase transitions in multi-species particle systems

Interacting systems with $K$ driven particle species on a open chain or chains which are coupled at the ends to boundary reservoirs with fixed particle densities are considered. We classify discontinuous and continuous phase transitions which are driven by adiabatic change of boundary conditions. We build minimal paths along which any given boundary driven phase transition (BDPT) is observed and reveal kinetic mechanisms governing these transitions. Combining minimal paths, we can drive the system from a stationary state with all positive characteristic speeds to a state with all negative characteristic speeds, by means of adiabatic changes of the boundary conditions. We show that along such composite paths one generically encounters $Z$ discontinuous and $2(K-Z)$ continuous BDPTs with $Z$ taking values $0\leq Z\leq K$ depending on the path. As model examples we consider solvable exclusion processes with product measure states and $K=1,2,3$ particle species and a non-solvable two-way traffic model. Our findings are confirmed by numerical integration of hydrodynamic limit equations and by Monte Carlo simulations. Results extend straightforwardly to a wide class of driven diffusive systems with several conserved particle species.

Scaling of the von Neumann entropy across a finite temperature phase transition

The spectrum of the reduced density matrix and the temperature dependence of the von Neumann entropy (VNE) are analytically obtained for a system of hard core bosons on a complete graph which exhibits a phase transition to a Bose-Einstein condensate at $T=T_c$. It is demonstrated that the VNE undergoes a crossover from purely logarithmic at T=0 to purely linear in block size $n$ behaviour for $T\geq T_{c}$. For intermediate temperatures, VNE is a sum of two contributions which are identified as the classical (Gibbs) and the quantum (due to entanglement) parts of the von Neumann entropy.

Spontaneous symmetry breaking in a bridge model fed by junctions

We introduce a class of 1D models mimicking a single-lane bridge with two junctions and two particle species driven in opposite directions. The model exhibits spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB) for a range of injection/extraction rates. In this phase the steady state currents of the two species are not equal. Moreover there is a co-existence region in which the symmetry broken phase co-exists with a symmetric phase. Along a path in which the extraction rate is varied, keeping the injection rate fixed and large, hysteresis takes place. The mean field phase diagram is calculated and supporting Monte-Carlo simulations are presented. One of the transition lines exhibits a kink, a feature which cannot exist in transition lines of equilibrium phase transitions.

Entangling power of permutation invariant quantum states

We investigate the von Neumann entanglement entropy as function of the size of a subsystem for permutation invariant ground states in models with finite number of states per site, e.g., in quantum spin models. We demonstrate that the entanglement entropy of $n$ sites in a system of length $L$ generically grows as $σ\log_{2}[2πen(L-n)/L]+C$, where $σ$ is the on-site spin and $C$ is a function depending only on magnetization.

Logarithmic divergence of the block entanglement entropy for the ferromagnetic Heisenberg model

Recent studies have shown that logarithmic divergence of entanglement entropy as function of size of a subsystem is a signature of criticality in quantum models. We demonstrate that the ground state entanglement entropy of $ n$ sites for ferromagnetic Heisenberg spin-1/2 chain of the length $L$ in a sector with fixed magnetization $y$ per site grows as ${1/2}\log_{2} \frac{n(L-n)}{L}C(y)$, where $C(y)=2πe({1/4}-y^{2})$

Why spontaneous symmetry breaking disappears in a bridge system with PDE-friendly boundaries

We consider a driven diffusive system with two types of particles, A and B, coupled at the ends to reservoirs with fixed particle densities. To define stochastic dynamics that correspond to boundary reservoirs we introduce projection measures. The stationary state is shown to be approached dynamically through an infinite reflection of shocks from the boundaries. We argue that spontaneous symmetry breaking observed in similar systems is due to placing effective impurities at the boundaries and therefore does not occur in our system. Monte-Carlo simulations confirm our results.

Symmetry breaking and phase coexistence in a driven diffusive two-channel system

We consider classical hard-core particles moving on two parallel chains in the same direction. An interaction between the channels is included via the hopping rates. For a ring, the stationary state has a product form. For the case of coupling to two reservoirs, it is investigated analytically and numerically. In addition to the known one-channel phases, two new regions are found, in particular the one, where the total density is fixed, but the filling of the individual chains changes back and forth, with a preference for strongly different densities. The corresponding probability distribution is determined and shown to have an universal form. The phase diagram and general aspects of the problem are discussed.
