The functional dissipativity of certain systems of partial differential equations

In the present paper we consider the functional dissipativity of the Dirichlet problem for systems of partial differential operators of the form $\partial_{h} ({\mathop{\mathscr A}\nolimits}^{hk}(x)\partial_{k})$ (${\mathop{\mathscr A}\nolimits}^{hk}$ being $m\times m$ matrices with complex valued $L^{1}_{\text{loc}}$ entries). In the particular case of the operator $\partial_{h} ({\mathop{\mathscr A}\nolimits}^{h}(x)\partial_{h})$ (where ${\mathop{\mathscr A}\nolimits}^{h}$ are $m\times m$ matrices) we obtain algebraic necessary and sufficient conditions. We give also three different notions of functional ellipticity and investigate the relations between them and the functional dissipativity for the operators in question.

The Fundamental Solution of an Elliptic Equation with Singular Drift

For $n\geq 3$, we study the existence and asymptotic properties of the fundamental solution for elliptic operators in nondivergence form, ${\mathcal L}(x,\partial_x)=a_{ij}(x)\partial_i\partial_j+b_k(x)\partial_k$, where the $a_{ij}$ have modulus of continuity $ω(r)$ satisfying the square-Dini condition and the $b_k$ are allowed mild singularities of order $r^{-1}ω(r)$. A singular integral is introduced that controls the existence of the fundamental solution. We give examples that show the singular drift $b_k\partial_k$ may act as a perturbation that does not dramatically change the fundamental solution of ${\mathcal L}^o=a_{ij}\partial_i\partial_j$, or it could change an operator ${\mathcal L}^o$ that does not have a fundamental solution to one that does.

A pointwise differential inequality and second-order regularity for nonlinear elliptic systems

A sharp pointwise differential inequality for vectorial second-order partial differential operators, with Uhlenbeck structure, is offered. As a consequence, optimal second-order regularity properties of solutions to nonlinear elliptic systems in domains in $\mathbb{R}^n$ are derived. Both local and global estimates are established. Minimal assumptions on the boundary of the domain are required for the latter. In the special case of the $p$-Laplace system, our conclusions broaden the range of the admissible values of the exponent $p$ previously known.

Criterion for the functional dissipativity of second order differential operators with complex coefficients

In the present paper we consider the Dirichlet problem for the second order differential operator $E=\nabla(A \nabla)$,where $A$ is a matrix with complex valued $L^\infty$ entries. We introduce the concept of dissipativity of $E$ with respect to a given function $φ:R^+ \to R^+$. Under the assumption that the $Im\, A$ is symmetric, we prove that the condition $|s\, φ'(s)| \, | \langle Im\, A (x)\, ξ,ξ\rangle |\leq 2\, \sqrt{φ(s)\, [s\, φ(s)]'}\, \langle Re\, A(x) \, ξ,ξ\rangle $ (for almost every $x\inΩ\subset R^N$ and for any $s>0$, $ξ\in R^N$) is necessary and sufficient for the functional dissipativity of $E$.

On meso-scale approximations for vibrations of membranes with lower-dimensional clusters of inertial inclusions

In this paper we consider formal asymptotic algorithms for a class of meso-scale approximations for problems of vibration of elastic membranes, which contain clusters of small inertial inclusions distributed along contours of pre-defined smooth shapes. Effective transmission conditions have been identified for inertial structured interfaces, and approximations to solutions of eigenvalue problems have been derived for domains containing lower-dimensional clusters of inclusions.

On sharp Agmon-Miranda maximum principles

In this survey we formulate our results on different forms of maximum principles for linear elliptic equations and systems. We start with necessary and sufficient conditions for validity of the classical maximum modulus principle for solutions of second order strongly elliptic systems. This principle holds under rather heavy restrictions on the coefficients of the systems, for instance, it fails for the Stokes and Lamé systems. Next, we turn to sharp constants in more general maximum principles due to S. Agmon and C. Miranda. We consider higher order elliptic equations, Stokes and Lamé systems in a half-space as well as the system of planar deformed state in a half-plane.

Sharp pointwise estimates for solutions of weakly coupled second order parabolic system in a layer

We deal with $m$-component vector-valued solutions to the Cauchy problem for linear both homogeneous and nonhomogeneous weakly coupled second order parabolic system in the layer ${\mathbb R}^{n+1}_T={\mathbb R}^n\times (0, T)$. We assume that coefficients of the system are real and depending only on $t$, $n\geq 1$ and $T<\infty$. The homogeneous system is considered with initial data in $[L^p({\mathbb R}^n)]^m$, $1\leq p \leq \infty $. For the nonhomogeneous system we suppose that the initial function is equal to zero and the right-hand side belongs to $[L^p({\mathbb R}^{n+1}_T)]^m\cap [C^α\big (\overline{{\mathbb R}^{n+1}_T} \big )]^m $, $α\in (0, 1)$. Explicit formulas for the sharp coefficients in pointwise estimates for solutions of these problems and their directional derivative are obtained.

A fast solution method for time dependent multidimensional Schrödinger equations

In this paper we propose fast solution methods for the Cauchy problem for the multidimensional Schrödinger equation. Our approach is based on the approximation of the data by the basis functions introduced in the theory of approximate approximations. We obtain high-order approximations also in higher dimensions up to a small saturation error, which is negligible in computations, and we prove error estimates in mixed Lebesgue spaces for the inhomogeneous equation. The proposed method is very efficient in high dimensions if the densities allow separated representations. We illustrate the efficiency of the procedure on different examples, up to approximation order 6 and space dimension 200.

Differentiability of Solutions to the Neumann Problem with Low-Regularity Data via Dynamical Systems

We obtain conditions for the differentiability of weak solutions for a second-order uniformly elliptic equation in divergence form with a homogeneous co-normal boundary condition. The modulus of continuity for the coefficients is assumed to satisfy the square-Dini condition and the boundary is assumed to be differentiable with derivatives also having this modulus of continuity. Additional conditions for the solution to be Lipschitz continuous or differentiable at a point on the boundary depend upon the stability of a dynamical system that is derived from the coefficients of the elliptic equation.

Boundedness of the gradient of a solution and Wiener test of order one for the biharmonic equation

The behavior of solutions to the biharmonic equation is well-understood in smooth domains. In the past two decades substantial progress has also been made for the polyhedral domains and domains with Lipschitz boundaries. However, very little is known about higher order elliptic equations in the general setting. In this paper we introduce new integral identities that allow to investigate the solutions to the biharmonic equation in an arbitrary domain. We establish: (1) boundedness of the gradient of a solution in any three-dimensional domain; (2) pointwise estimates on the derivatives of the biharmonic Green function; (3) Wiener-type necessary and sufficient conditions for continuity of the gradient of a solution.

Meso-scale models and approximate solutions for solids containing clouds of voids

For highly perforated domains the paper addresses a novel approach to study mixed boundary value problems for the equations of linear elasticity in the framework of meso-scale approximations. There are no assumptions of periodicity involved in the description of the geometry of the domain. The size of the perforations is small compared to the minimal separation between neighbouring defects and here we discuss a class of problems in perforated domains, which are not covered by the homogenisation approximations. The meso-scale approximations presented here are uniform. Explicit asymptotic formulae are supplied with the remainder estimates.

Sobolev inequalities in arbitrary domains

A theory of Sobolev inequalities in arbitrary open sets of Euclidean space is established. Boundary regularity of domains is replaced with information on boundary traces of trial functions and of their derivatives up to some explicit minimal order. The relevant Sobolev inequalities involve constants independent of the geometry of the domain, and exhibit the same critical exponents as in the classical inequalities on regular domains. Our approach relies upon new representation formulas for Sobolev functions, and on ensuing pointwise estimates which hold in any open set.

Criteria for Invariance of Convex Bodies for Linear Parabolic Systems

We consider systems of linear partial differential equations, which contain only second and first derivatives in the $x$ variables and which are uniformly parabolic in the sense of Petrovski\vı in the layer ${\mathbb R}^n\times [0,T]$. For such systems we obtain necessary and, separately, sufficient conditions for invariance of a convex body. These necessary and sufficient conditions coincide if the coefficients of the system do not depend on $t$. The above mentioned criterion is formulated as an algebraic condition describing a relation between the geometry of the invariant convex body and coefficients of the system. The criterion is concretized for certain classes of invariant convex sets: polyhedral angles, cylindrical and conical bodies.

Invariant convex bodies for strongly elliptic systems

We consider uniformly strongly elliptic systems of the second order with bounded coefficients. First, sufficient conditions for the invariance of convex bodies obtained for linear systems without zero order term in bounded domains and quasilinear systems of special form in bounded and in a class of unbounded domains. These conditions are formulated in algebraic form. They describe relation between the geometry of the invariant convex body and the coefficients of the system. Next, necessary conditions, which are also sufficient, for the invariance of some convex bodies are found for elliptic homogeneous systems with constant coefficients in a half-space. The necessary conditions are derived by using a criterion on the invariance of convex bodies for normalized matrix-valued integral transforms also obtained in the paper. In contrast with the previous studies of invariant sets for elliptic systems no a priori restrictions on the coefficient matrices are imposed.

Polyharmonic capacity and Wiener test of higher order

In the present paper we establish the Wiener test for boundary regularity of the solutions to the polyharmonic operator. We introduce a new notion of polyharmonic capacity and demonstrate necessary and sufficient conditions on the capacity of the domain responsible for the regularity of a polyharmonic function near a boundary point. In the case of the Laplacian the test for regularity of a boundary point is the celebrated Wiener criterion of 1924. It was extended to the biharmonic case in dimension three by [Mayboroda, Maz'ya, Invent. Math. 2009]. As a preliminary stage of this work, in [Mayboroda, Maz'ya, Invent. Math. 2013] we demonstrated boundedness of the appropriate derivatives of solutions to the polyharmonic problem in arbitrary domains, accompanied by sharp estimates on the Green function. The present work pioneers a new version of capacity and establishes the Wiener test in the full generality of the polyharmonic equation of arbitrary order.

Fast cubature of volume potentials over rectangular domains

In the present paper we study high-order cubature formulas for the computation of advection-diffusion potentials over boxes. By using the basis functions introduced in the theory of approximate approximations, the cubature of a potential is reduced to the quadrature of one dimensional integrals. For densities with separated approximation, we derive a tensor product representation of the integral operator which admits efficient cubature procedures in very high dimensions. Numerical tests show that these formulas are accurate and provide approximation of order $O(h^6)$ up to dimension $10^8$.

Second-order differentiability for solutions of elliptic equations in the plane

For a second-order elliptic equation of nondivergence form in the plane, we investigate conditions on the coefficients which imply that all strong solutions have first-order derivatives that are Lipschitz continuous or differentiable at a given point. We assume the coefficients have modulus of continuity satisfying the square-Dini condition, and obtain additional conditions associated with a dynamical system that is derived from the coefficients of the elliptic equation. Our results extend those of previous authors who assume the modulus of continuity satisfies the Dini condition.

The Integrability of Negative Powers of the Solution of the Saint Venant Problem

We initiate the study of the finiteness condition $\int_Ωu(x)^{-β}\,dx\leq C(Ω,β)<+\infty$ where $Ω\subseteq{\mathbb{R}}^n$ is an open set and $u$ is the solution of the Saint Venant problem $Δu=-1$ in $Ω$, $u=0$ on $\partialΩ$. The central issue which we address is that of determining the range of values of the parameter $β>0$ for which the aforementioned condition holds under various hypotheses on the smoothness of $Ω$ and demands on the nature of the constant $C(Ω,β)$. Classes of domains for which our analysis applies include bounded piecewise $C^1$ domains in ${\mathbb{R}}^n$, $n\geq 2$, with conical singularities (in particular polygonal domains in the plane), polyhedra in ${\mathbb{R}}^3$, and bounded domains which are locally of class $C^2$ and which have (finitely many) outwardly pointing cusps. For example, we show that if $u_N$ is the solution of the Saint Venant problem in the regular polygon $Ω_N$ with $N$ sides circumscribed by the unit disc in the plane, then for each $β\in(0,1)$ the following asymptotic formula holds: % {eqnarray*} \int_{Ω_N}u_N(x)^{-β}\,dx=\frac{4^βπ}{1-β} +{\mathcal{O}}(N^{β-1})\quad{as}\,\,N\to\infty. {eqnarray*} % One of the original motivations for addressing the aforementioned issues was the study of sublevel set estimates for functions $v$ satisfying $v(0)=0$, $\nabla v(0)=0$ and $Δv\geq c>0$.

On linear water wave problem in the presence of a critically submerged body

We study the problem of propagation of linear water waves in a deep water in the presence of a critically submerged body (i.e. the body touching the water surface). Assuming uniqueness of the solution in the energy space, we prove the existence of the solution which satisfies the radiation conditions at infinity as well as, additionally, at the cusp point where the body touches the water surface. This solution is obtained by the limiting absorption procedure. Next we introduce a relevant scattering matrix and analyse its properties. Under a geometric condition introduced by Maz'ya, see \cite{M1}, we show that the method of multipliers applies to cusp singularities, thus proving a new important property of the scattering matrix, which may be interpreted as the absence of a version of "full internal reflection". This property also allows us to prove uniqueness and existence of the solution in the functional spaces $H^2_{loc}\cap L^\infty $ and $H^2_{loc}\cap L^p $, $2<p<6$, provided a spectral parameter in the boundary conditions on the surface of the water is large enough. This description of the solution does not rely on the radiation conditions or the limiting absorption principle. This is the first result of this type known to us in the theory of linear wave problems in unbounded domains.

Regularity of solutions to the polyharmonic equation in general domains

The present paper establishes boundedness of $[m-\frac n2+\frac 12]$ derivatives for the solutions to the polyharmonic equation of order $2m$ in arbitrary bounded open sets of $\RR^n$, $2\leq n\leq 2m+1$, without any restrictions on the geometry of the underlying domain. It is shown that this result is sharp and cannot be improved in general domains. Moreover, it is accompanied by sharp estimates on the polyharmonic Green function.

$L^p$ solvability of the Stationary Stokes problem on domains with conical singularity in any dimension

The Dirichlet boundary value problem for the Stokes operator with $L^p$ data in any dimension on domains with conical singularity (not necessary a Lipschitz graph) is considered. We establish the solvability of the problem for all $p\in (2-\varepsilon,\infty]$ and also its solvability in $C(\overline{D})$ for the data in $C(\partial D)$

Differentiability of Solutions to Second-Order Elliptic Equations via Dynamical Systems

For a second-order elliptic equation in divergence form we investigate conditions on the coefficients which imply that all solutions are Lipschitz continuous or differentiable at a given point. We assume the coefficients have modulus of continuity satisfying the square-Dini condition, and obtain additional conditions that examples show are sharp. Our results extend those of previous authors who assume the modulus of continuity satisfies the Dini condition. Our method involves the study of asymptotic properties of solutions to a dynamical system that is derived from the coefficients of the elliptic equation.

Mesoscale asymptotic approximations to solutions of mixed boundary value problems in perforated domains

We describe a method of asymptotic approximations to solutions of mixed boundary value problems for the Laplacian in a three-dimensional domain with many perforations of arbitrary shape, with the Neumann boundary conditions being prescribed on the surfaces of small voids. The only assumption made on the geometry is that the diameter of a void is assumed to be smaller compared to the distance to the nearest neighbour. The asymptotic approximation, obtained here, involves a linear combination of dipole fields constructed for individual voids, with the coefficients, which are determined by solving a linear algebraic system. We prove the solvability of this system and derive an estimate for its solution. The energy estimate is obtained for the remainder term of the asymptotic approximation.

On the fundamental solution of an elliptic equation in nondivergence form

We consider the existence and asymptotics for the fundamental solution of an elliptic operator in nondivergence form, ${\mathcal L}(x,\del_x)=a_{ij}(x)\del_i\del_i$, for $n\geq 3$. We assume that the coefficients have modulus of continuity satisfying the square Dini condition. For fixed $y$, we construct a solution of ${\mathcal L}Z_y(x)=0$ for $0<|x-y|<\e$ with explicit leading order term which is $O(|x-y|^{2-n}e^{I(x,y)})$ as $x\to y$, where $I(x,y)$ is given by an integral and plays an important role for the fundamental solution: if $I(x,y)$ approaches a finite limit as $x\to y$, then we can solve ${\mathcal L}(x,\del_x)F(x,y)=\de(x-y)$, and $F(x,y)$ is asymptotic as $x\to y$ to the fundamental solution for the constant coefficient operator ${\mathcal L}(y,\del_x)$. On the other hand, if $I(x,y)\to -\infty$ as $x\to y$ then the solution $Z_y(x)$ violates the "extended maximum principle" of Gilbarg & Serrin \cite{GS} and is a distributional solution of ${\mathcal L}(x,\del_x)Z_y(x)=0$ for $|x-y|<\e$ although $Z_y$ is not even bounded as $x\to y$.
