Optimisation of the lowest Robin eigenvalue in exterior domains of the hyperbolic plane

We consider the Robin Laplacian in the exterior of a bounded simply-connected Lipschitz domain in the hyperbolic plane. We show that the essential spectrum of this operator is $[\frac14,\infty)$ and that, under convexity assumption on the domain, there exist discrete eigenvalues below $\frac14$ if, and only if, the Robin parameter is below a non-positive critical constant, which depends on the shape of the domain. As the main result, we prove that the lowest Robin eigenvalue for the exterior of a bounded geodesically convex domain $Ω$ in the hyperbolic plane does not exceed such an eigenvalue for the exterior of the geodesic disk, whose geodesic curvature of the boundary is not smaller than the averaged geodesic curvature of the boundary of $Ω$. This result implies as a consequence that under fixed area or fixed perimeter constraints the exterior of the geodesic disk maximises the lowest Robin eigenvalue among exteriors of bounded geodesically convex domains. Moreover, we obtain under the same geometric constraints a reverse inequality between the critical constants.

An isoperimetric inequality for the perturbed Robin bi-Laplacian in a planar exterior domain

In the present paper we introduce the perturbed two-dimensional Robin bi-Laplacian in the exterior of a bounded simply-connected $C^2$-smooth open set. The considered perturbation is of lower order and corresponds to tension. We prove that the essential spectrum of this operator coincides with the positive semi-axis and that the negative discrete spectrum is non-empty if, and only if, the boundary parameter is negative. As the main result, we obtain an isoperimetric inequality for the lowest eigenvalue of such a perturbed Robin bi-Laplacian with a negative boundary parameter in the exterior of a bounded convex planar set under the constraint on the maximum of the curvature of the boundary with the maximizer being the exterior of the disk. The isoperimetric inequality is proved under the additional assumption that to the lowest eigenvalue for the exterior of the disk corresponds a radial eigenfunction. We provide a sufficient condition in terms of the tension parameter and the radius of the disk for this property to hold.

On the isoperimetric inequality for the magnetic Robin Laplacian with negative boundary parameter

We consider the magnetic Robin Laplacian with a negative boundary parameter. Among a certain class of domains, we prove that the disk maximizes the ground state energy under the fixed perimeter constraint provided that the magnetic field is of moderate strength. This class of domains includes, in particular, all domains that are contained upon translations in the disk of the same perimeter and all convex centrally symmetric domains.

Schrödinger operators with $δ$-potentials supported on unbounded Lipschitz hypersurfaces

In this note we consider the self-adjoint Schrödinger operator $\mathsf{A}_α$ in $L^2(\mathbb{R}^d)$, $d\geq 2$, with a $δ$-potential supported on a Lipschitz hypersurface $Σ\subseteq\mathbb{R}^d$ of strength $α\in L^p(Σ)+L^\infty(Σ)$. We show the uniqueness of the ground state and, under some additional conditions on the coefficient $α$ and the hypersurface $Σ$, we determine the essential spectrum of $\mathsf{A}_α$. In the special case that $Σ$ is a hyperplane we obtain a Birman-Schwinger principle with a relativistic Schrödinger operator as Birman-Schwinger operator. As an application we prove an optimization result for the bottom of the spectrum of $\mathsf{A}_α$.

Self-adjointness of the 2D Dirac operator with singular interactions supported on star-graphs

We consider the two-dimensional Dirac operator with Lorentz-scalar $δ$-shell interactions on each edge of a star-graph. An orthogonal decomposition is performed which shows such an operator is unitarily equivalent to an orthogonal sum of half-line Dirac operators with off-diagonal Coulomb potentials. This decomposition reduces the computation of the deficiency indices to determining the number of eigenvalues of a one-dimensional spin-orbit operator in the interval $(-1/2,1/2)$. If the number of edges of the star graph is two or three, these deficiency indices can then be analytically determined for a range of parameters. For higher numbers of edges, it is possible to numerically calculate the deficiency indices. Among others, examples are given where the strength of the Lorentz-scalar interactions directly change the deficiency indices while other parameters are all fixed and where the deficiency indices are $(2,2)$, neither of which have been observed in the literature to the best knowledge of the authors. For those Dirac operators which are not already self-adjoint and do not have $0$ in the spectrum of the associated spin-orbit operator, the distinguished self-adjoint extension is also characterized.

Spectral optimization for Robin Laplacian on domains admitting parallel coordinates

In this paper we deal with spectral optimization for the Robin Laplacian on a family of planar domains admitting parallel coordinates, namely a fixed-width strip built over a smooth closed curve and the exterior of a convex set with a smooth boundary. We show that if the curve length is kept fixed, the first eigenvalue referring to the fixed-width strip is for any value of the Robin parameter maximized by a circular annulus. Furthermore, we prove that the second eigenvalue in the exterior of a convex domain $Ω$ corresponding to a negative Robin parameter does not exceed the analogous quantity for a disk whose boundary has a curvature larger than or equal to the maximum of that for $\partialΩ$.

Trace Hardy inequality for the Euclidean space with a cut and its applications

We obtain a trace Hardy inequality for the Euclidean space with a bounded cut $Σ\subset\mathbb R^d$, $d \ge 2$. In this novel geometric setting, the Hardy-type inequality non-typically holds also for $d = 2$. The respective Hardy weight is given in terms of the geodesic distance to the boundary of $Σ$. We provide its applications to the heat equation on $\mathbb R^d$ with an insulating cut at $Σ$ and to the Schrödinger operator with a $δ'$-interaction supported on $Σ$. We also obtain generalizations of this trace Hardy inequality for a class of unbounded cuts.

Spectral enclosures for non-self-adjoint extensions of symmetric operators

The spectral properties of non-self-adjoint extensions $A_{[B]}$ of a symmetric operator in a Hilbert space are studied with the help of ordinary and quasi boundary triples and the corresponding Weyl functions. These extensions are given in terms of abstract boundary conditions involving an (in general non-symmetric) boundary operator $B$. In the abstract part of this paper, sufficient conditions for sectoriality and m-sectoriality as well as sufficient conditions for $A_{[B]}$ to have a non-empty resolvent set are provided in terms of the parameter $B$ and the Weyl function. Special attention is paid to Weyl functions that decay along the negative real line or inside some sector in the complex plane, and spectral enclosures for $A_{[B]}$ are proved in this situation. The abstract results are applied to elliptic differential operators with local and non-local Robin boundary conditions on unbounded domains, to Schrödinger operators with $δ$-potentials of complex strengths supported on unbounded hypersurfaces or infinitely many points on the real line, and to quantum graphs with non-self-adjoint vertex couplings.

Optimisation of the lowest Robin eigenvalue in the exterior of a compact set, II: non-convex domains and higher dimensions

We consider the problem of geometric optimisation of the lowest eigenvalue of the Laplacian in the exterior of a compact set in any dimension, subject to attractive Robin boundary conditions. As an improvement upon our previous work (arXiv:1608.04896, to appear in J. Convex Anal.), we show that under either a constraint of fixed perimeter or area, the maximiser within the class of exteriors of simply connected planar sets is always the exterior of a disk, without the need of convexity assumption. Moreover, we generalise the result to disconnected compact planar sets. Namely, we prove that under a constraint of fixed average value of the perimeter over all the connected components, the maximiser within the class of disconnected compact planar sets, consisting of finitely many simply connected components, is again a disk. In higher dimensions, we prove a completely new result that the lowest point in the spectrum is maximised by the exterior of a ball among all sets exterior to bounded convex sets satisfying a constraint on the integral of a dimensional power of the mean curvature of their boundaries. Furthermore, it follows that the critical coupling at which the lowest point in the spectrum becomes a discrete eigenvalue emerging from the essential spectrum is minimised under the same constraint by the critical coupling for the exterior of a ball.

A spectral isoperimetric inequality for cones

In this note we investigate three-dimensional Schrödinger operators with $δ$-interactions supported on $C^2$-smooth cones, both finite and infinite. Our main results concern a Faber-Krahn-type inequality for the principal eigenvalue of these operators. The proofs rely on the Birman-Schwinger principle and on the fact that circles are unique minimizers for a class of energy functionals. The main novel idea consists in the way of constructing test functions for the Birman-Schwinger principle.

Eigenvalue inequalities for the Laplacian with mixed boundary conditions

Inequalities for the eigenvalues of the (negative) Laplacian subject to mixed boundary conditions on polyhedral and more general bounded domains are established. The eigenvalues subject to a Dirichlet boundary condition on a part of the boundary and a Neumann boundary condition on the remainder of the boundary are estimated in terms of either Dirichlet or Neumann eigenvalues. The results complement several classical inequalities between Dirichlet and Neumann eigenvalues due to Pólya, Payne, Levine and Weinberger, Friedlander, and others.

On absence of bound states for weakly attractive $δ^\prime$-interactions supported on non-closed curves in $\mathbb{R}^2$

Let $Λ\subset\mathbb{R}^2$ be a non-closed piecewise-$C^1$ curve, which is either bounded with two free endpoints or unbounded with one free endpoint. Let $u_\pm|_Λ\in L^2(Λ)$ be the traces of a function $u$ in the Sobolev space $H^1({\mathbb R}^2\setminus Λ)$ onto two faces of $Λ$. We prove that for a wide class of shapes of $Λ$ the Schrödinger operator $\mathsf{H}_ω^Λ$ with $δ^\prime$-interaction supported on $Λ$ of strength $ω\in L^\infty(Λ;\mathbb{R})$ associated with the quadratic form \[ H^1(\mathbb{R}^2\setminusΛ)\ni u \mapsto \int_{\mathbb{R}^2}\big|\nabla u \big|^2 \mathsf{d} x - \int_Λω\big| u_+|_Λ- u_-|_Λ\big|^2 \mathsf{d} s \] has no negative spectrum provided that $ω$ is pointwise majorized by a strictly positive function explicitly expressed in terms of $Λ$. If, additionally, the domain $\mathbb{R}^2\setminusΛ$ is quasi-conical, we show that $σ(\mathsf{H}_ω^Λ) = [0,+\infty)$. For a bounded curve $Λ$ in our class and non-varying interaction strength $ω\in\mathbb{R}$ we derive existence of a constant $ω_* > 0$ such that $σ(\mathsf{H}_ω^Λ) = [0,+\infty)$ for all $ω\in (-\infty, ω_*]$; informally speaking, bound states are absent in the weak coupling regime.

On resonances and bound states of Smilansky Hamiltonian

We consider the self-adjoint Smilansky Hamiltonian $\mathsf{H}_\varepsilon$ in $L^2(\mathbb{R}^2)$ associated with the formal differential expression $-\partial_x^2 - \frac12\big(\partial_y^2 + y^2) - \sqrt{2}\varepsilon y δ(x)$ in the sub-critical regime, $\varepsilon \in (0,1)$. We demonstrate the existence of resonances for $\mathsf{H}_\varepsilon$ on a countable subfamily of sheets of the underlying Riemann surface whose distance from the physical sheet is finite. On such sheets, we find resonance free regions and characterise resonances for small $\varepsilon > 0$. In addition, we refine the previously known results on the bound states of $\mathsf{H}_\varepsilon$ in the weak coupling regime ($\varepsilon\rightarrow 0+$). In the proofs we use Birman-Schwinger principle for $\mathsf{H}_\varepsilon$, elements of spectral theory for Jacobi matrices, and the analytic implicit function theorem.

Spectra of definite type in waveguide models

We develop an abstract method to identify spectral points of definite type in the spectrum of the operator $T_1\otimes I_2 + I_1\otimes T_2$. The method is applicable in particular for non-self-adjoint waveguide type operators with symmetries. Using the remarkable properties of the spectral points of definite type, we obtain new results on realness of weakly coupled bound states and of low lying essential spectrum in the $\mathcal{P}\mathcal{T}$-symmetric waveguide. Moreover, we show that the pseudospectrum has a normal tame behavior near the low lying essential spectrum and exclude the accumulation of non-real eigenvalues to this part of the essential spectrum. The advantage of our approach is particularly visible when the resolvent of the unperturbed operator cannot be explicitly expressed and most of the mentioned spectral conclusions are extremely hard to prove using direct methods.

Spectral transitions for Aharonov-Bohm Laplacians on conical layers

We consider the Laplace operator in a tubular neighbourhood of a conical surface of revolution, subject to an Aharonov-Bohm magnetic field supported on the axis of symmetry and Dirichlet boundary conditions on the boundary of the domain. We show that there exists a critical total magnetic flux depending on the aperture of the conical surface for which the system undergoes an abrupt spectral transition from infinitely many eigenvalues below the essential spectrum to an empty discrete spectrum. For the critical flux we establish a Hardy-type inequality. In the regime with infinite discrete spectrum we obtain sharp spectral asymptotics with refined estimate of the remainder and investigate the dependence of the eigenvalues on the aperture of the surface and the flux of the magnetic field.

On the Bound States of Schrödinger Operators with $δ$-interactions on Conical Surfaces

In dimension greater than or equal to three, we investigate the spectrum of a Schr{ö}dinger operator with a $δ$-interaction supported on a cone whose cross section is the sphere of co-dimension two. After decomposing into fibers, we prove that there is discrete spectrum only in dimension three and that it is generated by the axisymmetric fiber. We get that these eigenvalues are non-decreasing functions of the aperture of the cone and we exhibit the precise logarithmic accumulation of the discrete spectrum below the threshold of the essential spectrum.

Spectral asymptotics for resolvent differences of elliptic operators with $δ$ and $δ^\prime$-interactions on hypersurfaces

We consider self-adjoint realizations of a second-order elliptic differential expression on ${\mathbb R}^n$ with singular interactions of $δ$ and $δ^\prime$-type supported on a compact closed smooth hypersurface in ${\mathbb R}^n$. In our main results we prove spectral asymptotics formulae with refined remainder estimates for the singular values of the resolvent difference between the standard self-adjoint realizations and the operators with a $δ$ and $δ^\prime$-interaction, respectively. Our technique makes use of general pseudodifferential methods, classical results on spectral asymptotics of $ψ$do's on closed manifolds and Krein-type resolvent formulae.

An eigenvalue inequality for Schrödinger operators with $δ$ and $δ'$-interactions supported on hypersurfaces

We consider self-adjoint Schrödinger operators in $L^2 (\mathbb{R}^d)$ with a $δ$-interaction of strength $α$ and a $δ'$-interaction of strength $β$, respectively, supported on a hypersurface, where $α$ and $β^{-1}$ are bounded, real-valued functions. It is known that the inequality $0 < β\leq 4/α$ implies inequality of the eigenvalues of these two operators below the bottoms of the essential spectra. We show that this eigenvalue inequality is strict whenever $β< 4 / α$ on a nonempty, open subset of the hypersurface. Moreover, we point out special geometries of the interaction support, such as broken lines or infinite cones, for which strict inequality of the eigenvalues even holds in the borderline case $β= 4 / α$.

Schrödinger operators with $δ$-interactions supported on conical surfaces

We investigate the spectral properties of self-adjoint Schrödinger operators with attractive $δ$-interactions of constant strength $α> 0$ supported on conical surfaces in ${\mathbb R}^3$. It is shown that the essential spectrum is given by $[-α^2/4,+\infty)$ and that the discrete spectrum is infinite and accumulates to $-α^2/4$. Furthermore, an asymptotic estimate of these eigenvalues is obtained.

Spectral analysis of the half-line Kronig-Penney model with Wigner-von Neumann perturbations

The spectrum of the self-adjoint Schrödinger operator associated with the Kronig-Penney model on the half-line has a band-gap structure: its absolutely continuous spectrum consists of intervals (bands) separated by gaps. We show that if one changes strengths of interactions or locations of interaction centers by adding an oscillating and slowly decaying sequence which resembles the classical Wigner-von Neumann potential, then this structure of the absolutely continuous spectrum is preserved. At the same time in each spectral band precisely two critical points appear. At these points "instable" embedded eigenvalues may exist. We obtain locations of the critical points and discuss for each of them the possibility of an embedded eigenvalue to appear. We also show that the spectrum in gaps remains discrete.

Weakly coupled bound state of 2D Schrödinger operator with potential-measure

We consider a self-adjoint two-dimensional Schrödinger operator $H_{αμ}$, which corresponds to the formal differential expression \[ -Δ- αμ, \] where $μ$ is a finite compactly supported positive Radon measure on ${\mathbb R}^2$ from the generalized Kato class and $α>0$ is the coupling constant. It was proven earlier that $σ_{\rm ess}(H_{αμ}) = [0,+\infty)$. We show that for sufficiently small $α$ the condition $\sharpσ_{\rm d}(H_{αμ}) = 1$ holds and that the corresponding unique eigenvalue has the asymptotic expansion $$ λ(α) = -(C_μ+ o(1))\exp\Big(-\tfrac{4π}{αμ({\mathbb R}^2)}\Big), \qquad α\rightarrow 0+, $$ with a certain constant $C_μ> 0$. We obtain also the formula for the computation of $C_μ$. The asymptotic expansion of the corresponding eigenfunction is provided. The statements of this paper extend Simon's results, see \cite{Si76}, to the case of potentials-measures. Also for regular potentials our results are partially new.

Lower bounds on the norms of extension operators for Lipschitz domains

Let $Ω\subset\dR^d$ be a bounded or an unbounded Lipschitz domain. In this note we address the problem of continuation of functions from the Sobolev space $H^1(Ω)$ up to functions in the Sobolev space $H^1(\dR^d)$ via a linear operator. The minimal possible norm of such an operator is estimated from below in terms of spectral properties of self-adjoint Robin Laplacians on domains $Ω$ and $\dR^d\setminus\ovΩ$. Another estimate of this norm is also given, where spectral properties of Schrödinger operators with the $δ$-interaction supported on the hypersurface $\partialΩ$ are involved. General results are illustrated with examples.

Note on 2D Schrödinger operators with delta-interactions on angles and crossing lines

In this note we sharpen the lower bound from [LLP10] on the spectrum of the 2D Schroedinger operator with a delta-interaction supported on a planar angle. Using the same method we obtain the lower bound on the spectrum of the 2D Schroedinger operator with a delta-interaction supported on crossing straight lines. The latter operators arise in the three-body quantum problem with delta-interactions between particles.

Schrödinger operators with δ- and δ'-interactions on Lipschitz surfaces and chromatic numbers of associated partitions

We investigate Schrödinger operators with δ- and δ'-interactions supported on hypersurfaces, which separate the Euclidean space into finitely many bounded and unbounded Lipschitz domains. It turns out that the combinatorial properties of the partition and the spectral properties of the corresponding operators are related. As the main result we prove an operator inequality for the Schrödinger operators with δ- and δ'-interactions which is based on an optimal colouring and involves the chromatic number of the partition. This inequality implies various relations for the spectra of the Schrödinger operators and, in particular, it allows to transform known results for Schrödinger operators with δ-interactions to Schrödinger operators with δ'-interactions.

Trace formulae and singular values of resolvent power differences of self-adjoint elliptic operators

In this note self-adjoint realizations of second order elliptic differential expressions with non-local Robin boundary conditions on a domain $Ω\subset\dR^n$ with smooth compact boundary are studied. A Schatten--von Neumann type estimate for the singular values of the difference of the $m$th powers of the resolvents of two Robin realizations is obtained, and for $m>\tfrac{n}{2}-1$ it is shown that the resolvent power difference is a trace class operator. The estimates are slightly stronger than the classical singular value estimates by M. Sh. Birman where one of the Robin realizations is replaced by the Dirichlet operator. In both cases trace formulae are proved, in which the trace of the resolvent power differences in $L^2(Ω)$ is written in terms of the trace of derivatives of Neumann-to-Dirichlet and Robin-to-Neumann maps on the boundary space $L^2(\partialΩ)$.

Schrödinger operators with delta and delta'-potentials supported on hypersurfaces

Self-adjoint Schrödinger operators with $δ$ and $δ'$-potentials supported on a smooth compact hypersurface are defined explicitly via boundary conditions. The spectral properties of these operators are investigated, regularity results on the functions in their domains are obtained, and analogues of the Birman--Schwinger principle and a variant of Krein's formula are shown. Furthermore, Schatten--von Neumann type estimates for the differences of the powers of the resolvents of the Schrödinger operators with $δ$ and $δ'$-potentials, and the Schrödinger operator without a singular interaction are proved. An immediate consequence of these estimates is the existence and completeness of the wave operators of the corresponding scattering systems, as well as the unitary equivalence of the absolutely continuous parts of the singularly perturbed and unperturbed Schrödinger operators. In the proofs of our main theorems we make use of abstract methods from extension theory of symmetric operators, some algebraic considerations and results on elliptic regularity.

Schatten-von Neumann estimates for resolvent differences of Robin Laplacians on a half-space

The difference of the resolvents of two Laplacians on a half-space subject to Robin boundary conditions is studied. In general this difference is not compact, but it will be shown that it is compact and even belongs to some Schatten-von-Neumann class, if the coefficients in the boundary condition are sufficiently close to each other in a proper sense. In certain cases the resolvent difference is shown to belong even to the same Schatten-von Neumann class as it is known for the resolvent difference of two Robin Laplacians on a domain with a compact boundary.

Singular continuous spectrum of half-line Schrödinger operators with point interactions on a sparse set

We say that a discrete set $X =\{x_n\}_{n\in\dN_0}$ on the half-line $$0=x_0 < x_1 <x_2 <x_3<... <x_n<... <+\infty$$ is sparse if the distances $Δx_n = x_{n+1} -x_n$ between neighbouring points satisfy the condition $\frac{Δx_{n}}{Δx_{n-1}} \rightarrow +\infty$. In this paper half-line Schrödinger operators with point $δ$- and $δ^\prime$-interactions on a sparse set are considered. Assuming that strengths of point interactions tend to $\infty$ we give simple sufficient conditions for such Schrödinger operators to have non-empty singular continuous spectrum and to have purely singular continuous spectrum, which coincides with $\dR_+$.

A remark on Schatten-von Neumann properties of resolvent differences of generalized Robin Laplacians on bounded domains

In this note we investigate the asymptotic behaviour of the $s$-numbers of the resolvent difference of two generalized self-adjoint, maximal dissipative or maximal accumulative Robin Laplacians on a bounded domain $Ω$ with smooth boundary $\partialΩ$. For this we apply the recently introduced abstract notion of quasi boundary triples and Weyl functions from extension theory of symmetric operators together with Krein type resolvent formulae and well-known eigenvalue asymptotics of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on $\partialΩ$. It will be shown that the resolvent difference of two generalized Robin Laplacians belongs to the Schatten-von Neumann class of any order $p$ for which $p>(dimΩ-1)/3$. Moreover, we also give a simple sufficient condition for the resolvent difference of two generalized Robin Laplacians to belong to a Schatten-von Neumann class of arbitrary small order. Our results extend and complement classical theorems due to M.Sh.Birman on Schatten-von Neumann properties of the resolvent differences of Dirichlet, Neumann and self-adjoint Robin Laplacians.

Lower bound on the spectrum of the Schrödinger operator in the plane with delta-potential supported by a curve

We consider the Schrödinger operator in the plane with delta-potential supported by a curve. For the cases of an infinite curve and a finite loop we give estimates on the lower bound of the spectrum expressed explicitly through the strength of the interaction and a parameter which characterizes geometry of the curve. Going further we cut the curve into finite number of pieces and estimate the bottom of the spectrum using the parameters for the pieces. As an application of the elaborated theory we consider a curve with a finite number of cusps and "leaky" quantum graphs.
