Integral representation of superoscillations via complex Borel measures and their convergence

In the last decade there has been a growing interest in superoscillations in various fields of mathematics, physics and engineering. However, while in applications as optics the local oscillatory behaviour is the important property, some convergence to a plane wave is the standard characterizing feature of a superoscillating function in mathematics and quantum mechanics. Also there exists a certain discrepancy between the representation of superoscillations either as generalized Fourier series, as certain integrals or via special functions. The aim of this work is to close these gaps and give a general definition of superoscillations, covering the well-known examples in the existing literature. Superoscillations will be defined as sequences of holomorphic functions, which admit integral representations with respect to complex Borel measures and converge to a plane wave in the space $\mathcal{A}_1(\mathbb{C})$ of exponentially bounded entire functions.

Schrödinger operators with $δ$-potentials supported on unbounded Lipschitz hypersurfaces

In this note we consider the self-adjoint Schrödinger operator $\mathsf{A}_α$ in $L^2(\mathbb{R}^d)$, $d\geq 2$, with a $δ$-potential supported on a Lipschitz hypersurface $Σ\subseteq\mathbb{R}^d$ of strength $α\in L^p(Σ)+L^\infty(Σ)$. We show the uniqueness of the ground state and, under some additional conditions on the coefficient $α$ and the hypersurface $Σ$, we determine the essential spectrum of $\mathsf{A}_α$. In the special case that $Σ$ is a hyperplane we obtain a Birman-Schwinger principle with a relativistic Schrödinger operator as Birman-Schwinger operator. As an application we prove an optimization result for the bottom of the spectrum of $\mathsf{A}_α$.

A unified approach to Schrödinger evolution of superoscillations and supershifts

Superoscillating functions and supershifts appear naturally in weak measurements in physics. Their evolution as initial conditions in the time dependent Schrödinger equation is an important and challenging problem in quantum mechanics and mathematical analysis. The concept that encodes the persistence of superoscillations during the evolution is the (more general) supershift property of the solution. In this paper we give a unified approach to determine the supershift property for the solution of the time dependent Schrödinger equation. The main advantage and novelty of our results is that they only require suitable estimates and regularity assumptions on the Green's function, but not its explicit form. With this efficient general technique we are able to treat various potentials.

Green's Function for the Schrödinger Equation with a Generalized Point Interaction and Stability of Superoscillations

In this paper we study the time dependent Schrödinger equation with all possible self-adjoint singular interactions located at the origin, which include the $δ$ and $δ'$-potentials as well as boundary conditions of Dirichlet, Neumann, and Robin type as particular cases. We derive an explicit representation of the time dependent Green's function and give a mathematical rigorous meaning to the corresponding integral for holomorphic initial conditions, using Fresnel integrals. Superoscillatory functions appear in the context of weak measurements in quantum mechanics and are naturally treated as holomorphic entire functions. As an application of the Green's function we study the stability and oscillatory properties of the solution of the Schrödinger equation subject to a generalized point interaction when the initial datum is a superoscillatory function.

Inverse problems with partial data for elliptic operators on unbounded Lipschitz domains

For a second order formally symmetric elliptic differential expression we show that the knowledge of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map or Robin-to-Dirichlet map for suitably many energies on an arbitrarily small open subset of the boundary determines the self-adjoint operator with a Dirichlet boundary condition or with a (possibly non-self-adjoint) Robin boundary condition uniquely up to unitary equivalence. These results hold for general Lipschitz domains, which can be unbounded and may have a non-compact boundary, and under weak regularity assumptions on the coefficients of the differential expression.

Self-adjoint Dirac operators on domains in $\mathbb{R}^3$

In this paper the spectral and scattering properties of a family of self-adjoint Dirac operators in $L^2(Ω; \mathbb{C}^4)$, where $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^3$ is either a bounded or an unbounded domain with a compact $C^2$-smooth boundary, are studied in a systematic way. These operators can be viewed as the natural relativistic counterpart of Laplacians with Robin boundary conditions. Among the Dirac operators treated here is also the so-called MIT bag operator, which has been used by physicists and more recently was discussed in the mathematical literature. Our approach is based on abstract boundary triple techniques from extension theory of symmetric operators and a thorough study of certain classes of (boundary) integral operators, that appear in a Krein-type resolvent formula. The analysis of the perturbation term in this formula leads to a description of the spectrum and a Birman-Schwinger principle, a qualitative understanding of the scattering properties in the case that $Ω$ is unbounded, and corresponding trace formulas.

Two-dimensional Dirac operators with singular interactions supported on closed curves

We study the two-dimensional Dirac operator with an arbitrary combination of electrostatic and Lorentz scalar $δ$-interactions of constant strengths supported on a smooth closed curve. For any combination of the coupling constants a rigorous description of the self-adjoint realizations of the operators is given and the qualitative spectral properties are described. The analysis covers also all so-called critical combinations of coupling constants, for which there is a loss of regularity in the operator domain. In this case, if the mass is non-zero, the resulting operator has an additional point in the essential spectrum, and the position of this point inside the central gap can be made arbitrary by a suitable choice of the coupling constants. The analysis is based on a combination of the extension theory of symmetric operators with a detailed study of boundary integral operators viewed as periodic pseudodifferential operators.

Spectral enclosures for non-self-adjoint extensions of symmetric operators

The spectral properties of non-self-adjoint extensions $A_{[B]}$ of a symmetric operator in a Hilbert space are studied with the help of ordinary and quasi boundary triples and the corresponding Weyl functions. These extensions are given in terms of abstract boundary conditions involving an (in general non-symmetric) boundary operator $B$. In the abstract part of this paper, sufficient conditions for sectoriality and m-sectoriality as well as sufficient conditions for $A_{[B]}$ to have a non-empty resolvent set are provided in terms of the parameter $B$ and the Weyl function. Special attention is paid to Weyl functions that decay along the negative real line or inside some sector in the complex plane, and spectral enclosures for $A_{[B]}$ are proved in this situation. The abstract results are applied to elliptic differential operators with local and non-local Robin boundary conditions on unbounded domains, to Schrödinger operators with $δ$-potentials of complex strengths supported on unbounded hypersurfaces or infinitely many points on the real line, and to quantum graphs with non-self-adjoint vertex couplings.

Coupling of symmetric operators and the third Green identity

The principal aim of this paper is to derive an abstract form of the third Green identity associated with a proper extension $T$ of a symmetric operator $S$ in a Hilbert space $\mathfrak H$, employing the technique of quasi boundary triples for $T$. The general results are illustrated with couplings of Schrödinger operators on Lipschitz domains on smooth, boundaryless Riemannian manifolds.

Dirichlet-to-Neumann Maps, Abstract Weyl-Titchmarsh $M$-Functions, and a Generalized Index of Unbounded Meromorphic Operator-Valued Functions

We introduce a generalized index for certain meromorphic, unbounded, operator-valued functions. The class of functions is chosen such that energy parameter dependent Dirichlet-to-Neumann maps associated to uniformly elliptic partial differential operators, particularly, non-self-adjoint Schrödinger operators, on bounded Lipschitz domains, and abstract operator-valued Weyl-Titchmarsh $M$-functions and Donoghue-type $M$-functions corresponding to closed extensions of symmetric operators belong to it. The principal purpose of this paper is to prove index formulas that relate the difference of the algebraic multiplicities of the discrete eigenvalues of Robin realizations of non-self-adjoint Schrödinger operators, and more abstract pairs of closed operators in Hilbert spaces with the generalized index of the corresponding energy dependent Dirichlet-to-Neumann maps and abstract Weyl-Titchmarsh $M$-functions, respectively.

Eigenvalue inequalities for Schrödinger operators on unbounded Lipschitz domains

Given a Schrödinger differential expression on an exterior Lipschitz domain we prove strict inequalities between the eigenvalues of the corresponding selfadjoint operators subject to Dirichlet and Neumann or Dirichlet and mixed boundary conditions, respectively. Moreover, we prove a strict inequality between the eigenvalues of two different elliptic differential operators on the same domain with Dirichlet boundary conditions.

On the index of meromorphic operator-valued functions and some applications

We revisit and connect several notions of algebraic multiplicities of zeros of analytic operator-valued functions and discuss the concept of the index of meromorphic operator-valued functions in complex, separable Hilbert spaces. Applications to abstract perturbation theory and associated Birman-Schwinger-type operators and to the operator-valued Weyl-Titchmarsh functions associated to closed extensions of dual pairs of closed operators are provided.

Scattering matrices and Dirichlet-to-Neumann maps

A general representation formula for the scattering matrix of a scattering system consisting of two self-adjoint operators in terms of an abstract operator valued Titchmarsh-Weyl $m$-function is proved. This result is applied to scattering problems for different self-adjoint realizations of Schrödinger operators on unbounded domains, Schrödinger operators with singular potentials supported on hypersurfaces, and orthogonal couplings of Schrödinger operators. In these applications the scattering matrix is expressed in an explicit form with the help of Dirichlet-to-Neumann maps.

Spectral shift functions and Dirichlet-to-Neumann maps

The spectral shift function of a pair of self-adjoint operators is expressed via an abstract operator valued Titchmarsh--Weyl $m$-function. This general result is applied to different self-adjoint realizations of second-order elliptic partial differential operators on smooth domains with compact boundaries, Schrödinger operators with compactly supported potentials, and finally, Schrödinger operators with singular potentials supported on hypersurfaces. In these applications the spectral shift function is determined in an explicit form with the help of (energy parameter dependent) Dirichlet-to-Neumann maps.

Spectral asymptotics for resolvent differences of elliptic operators with $δ$ and $δ^\prime$-interactions on hypersurfaces

We consider self-adjoint realizations of a second-order elliptic differential expression on ${\mathbb R}^n$ with singular interactions of $δ$ and $δ^\prime$-type supported on a compact closed smooth hypersurface in ${\mathbb R}^n$. In our main results we prove spectral asymptotics formulae with refined remainder estimates for the singular values of the resolvent difference between the standard self-adjoint realizations and the operators with a $δ$ and $δ^\prime$-interaction, respectively. Our technique makes use of general pseudodifferential methods, classical results on spectral asymptotics of $ψ$do's on closed manifolds and Krein-type resolvent formulae.

The effect of finite rank perturbations on Jordan chains of linear operators

A general result on the structure and dimension of the root subspaces of a matrix or a linear operator under finite rank perturbations is proved: The increase of dimension from the $n$-th power of the kernel of the perturbed operator to the $(n+1)$-th power differs from the increase of dimension of the corresponding powers of the kernels of the unperturbed operator by at most the rank of the perturbation and this bound is sharp.

The Krein-von Neumann Realization of Perturbed Laplacians on Bounded Lipschitz Domains

In this paper we study the self-adjoint Krein-von Neumann realization $A_K$ of the perturbed Laplacian $-Δ+V$ in a bounded Lipschitz domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^n$. We provide an explicit and self-contained description of the domain of $A_K$ in terms of Dirichlet and Neumann boundary traces, and we establish a Weyl asymptotic formula for the eigenvalues of $A_K$.

Schrödinger operators with $δ$-interactions supported on conical surfaces

We investigate the spectral properties of self-adjoint Schrödinger operators with attractive $δ$-interactions of constant strength $α> 0$ supported on conical surfaces in ${\mathbb R}^3$. It is shown that the essential spectrum is given by $[-α^2/4,+\infty)$ and that the discrete spectrum is infinite and accumulates to $-α^2/4$. Furthermore, an asymptotic estimate of these eigenvalues is obtained.

Spectral analysis of selfadjoint elliptic differential operators, Dirichlet-to-Neumann maps, and abstract Weyl functions

The spectrum of a selfadjoint second order elliptic differential operator in $L^2(\mathbb{R}^n)$ is described in terms of the limiting behavior of Dirichlet-to-Neumann maps, which arise in a multi-dimensional Glazman decomposition and correspond to an interior and an exterior boundary value problem. This leads to PDE analogs of renowned facts in spectral theory of ODEs. The main results in this paper are first derived in the more abstract context of extension theory of symmetric operators and corresponding Weyl functions, and are applied to the PDE setting afterwards.

Titchmarsh-Weyl theory for Schrödinger operators on unbounded domains

In this note it is proved that the complete spectral data of selfadjoint Schrödinger operators on unbounded domains can be described with an associated Dirichlet-to-Neumann map. In particular, a characterization of the isolated and embedded eigenvalues, the corresponding eigenspaces, as well as the continuous and absolutely continuous spectrum in terms of the limiting behaviour of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map is obtained. Furthermore, a sufficient criterion for the absence of singular continuous spectrum is provided. The results are natural multidimensional analogues of classical facts from singular Sturm-Liouville theory.

Elliptic differential operators on Lipschitz domains and abstract boundary value problems

This paper consists of two parts. In the first part, which is of more abstract nature, the notion of quasi boundary triples and associated Weyl functions is developed further in such a way that it can be applied to elliptic boundary value problems on non-smooth domains. A key feature is the extension of the boundary maps by continuity to the duals of certain range spaces, which directly leads to a description of all self-adjoint extensions of the underlying symmetric operator with the help of abstract boundary values. In the second part of the paper a complete description is obtained of all self-adjoint realizations of the Laplacian on bounded Lipschitz domains, as well as Kre\uın type resolvent formulas and a spectral characterization in terms of energy dependent Dirichlet-to-Neumann maps. These results can be viewed as the natural generalization of recent results from Gesztesy and Mitrea for quasi-convex domains. In this connection we also characterize the maximal range spaces of the Dirichlet and Neumann trace operators on a bounded Lipschitz domain in terms of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map. The general results from the first part of the paper are also applied to higher order elliptic operators on smooth domains, and particular attention is paid to the second order case which is illustrated with various examples.

Schrödinger operators with δ- and δ'-interactions on Lipschitz surfaces and chromatic numbers of associated partitions

We investigate Schrödinger operators with δ- and δ'-interactions supported on hypersurfaces, which separate the Euclidean space into finitely many bounded and unbounded Lipschitz domains. It turns out that the combinatorial properties of the partition and the spectral properties of the corresponding operators are related. As the main result we prove an operator inequality for the Schrödinger operators with δ- and δ'-interactions which is based on an optimal colouring and involves the chromatic number of the partition. This inequality implies various relations for the spectra of the Schrödinger operators and, in particular, it allows to transform known results for Schrödinger operators with δ-interactions to Schrödinger operators with δ'-interactions.

Trace formulae and singular values of resolvent power differences of self-adjoint elliptic operators

In this note self-adjoint realizations of second order elliptic differential expressions with non-local Robin boundary conditions on a domain $Ω\subset\dR^n$ with smooth compact boundary are studied. A Schatten--von Neumann type estimate for the singular values of the difference of the $m$th powers of the resolvents of two Robin realizations is obtained, and for $m>\tfrac{n}{2}-1$ it is shown that the resolvent power difference is a trace class operator. The estimates are slightly stronger than the classical singular value estimates by M. Sh. Birman where one of the Robin realizations is replaced by the Dirichlet operator. In both cases trace formulae are proved, in which the trace of the resolvent power differences in $L^2(Ω)$ is written in terms of the trace of derivatives of Neumann-to-Dirichlet and Robin-to-Neumann maps on the boundary space $L^2(\partialΩ)$.

Bounds on the non-real spectrum of differential operators with indefinite weights

Ordinary and partial differential operators with an indefinite weight function can be viewed as bounded perturbations of non-negative operators in Krein spaces. Under the assumption that 0 and $\infty$ are not singular critical points of the unperturbed operator it is shown that a bounded additive perturbation leads to an operator whose non-real spectrum is contained in a compact set and with definite type real spectrum outside this set. The main results are quantitative estimates for this set, which are applied to Sturm-Liouville and second order elliptic partial differential operators with indefinite weights on unbounded domains.

Schrödinger operators with delta and delta'-potentials supported on hypersurfaces

Self-adjoint Schrödinger operators with $δ$ and $δ'$-potentials supported on a smooth compact hypersurface are defined explicitly via boundary conditions. The spectral properties of these operators are investigated, regularity results on the functions in their domains are obtained, and analogues of the Birman--Schwinger principle and a variant of Krein's formula are shown. Furthermore, Schatten--von Neumann type estimates for the differences of the powers of the resolvents of the Schrödinger operators with $δ$ and $δ'$-potentials, and the Schrödinger operator without a singular interaction are proved. An immediate consequence of these estimates is the existence and completeness of the wave operators of the corresponding scattering systems, as well as the unitary equivalence of the absolutely continuous parts of the singularly perturbed and unperturbed Schrödinger operators. In the proofs of our main theorems we make use of abstract methods from extension theory of symmetric operators, some algebraic considerations and results on elliptic regularity.

An inverse problem of Calderon type with partial data

A generalized variant of the Calderón problem from electrical impedance tomography with partial data for anisotropic Lipschitz conductivities is considered in an arbitrary space dimension $n \geq 2$. The following two results are shown: (i) The selfadjoint Dirichlet operator associated with an elliptic differential expression on a bounded Lipschitz domain is determined uniquely up to unitary equivalence by the knowledge of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map on an open subset of the boundary, and (ii) the Dirichlet operator can be reconstructed from the residuals of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map on this subset.

Eigenvalue estimates for singular left-definite Sturm-Liouville operators

The spectral properties of a singular left-definite Sturm-Liouville operator $JA$ are investigated and described via the properties of the corresponding right-definite selfadjoint counterpart $A$ which is obtained by substituting the indefinite weight function by its absolute value. The spectrum of the $J$-selfadjoint operator $JA$ is real and it follows that an interval $(a,b)\subset\mathbb R^+$ is a gap in the essential spectrum of $A$ if and only if both intervals $(-b,-a)$ and $(a,b)$ are gaps in the essential spectrum of the $J$-selfadjoint operator $JA$. As one of the main results it is shown that the number of eigenvalues of $JA$ in $(-b,-a) \cup (a,b)$ differs at most by three of the number of eigenvalues of $A$ in the gap $(a,b)$; as a byproduct results on the accumulation of eigenvalues of singular left-definite Sturm-Liouville operators are obtained. Furthermore, left-definite problems with symmetric and periodic coefficients are treated, and several examples are included to illustrate the general results.

Spectral theory of elliptic differential operators with indefinite weights

The spectral properties of a class of non-selfadjoint second order elliptic operators with indefinite weight functions on unbounded domains $Ω$ are investigated. It is shown that under an abstract regularity assumption the nonreal spectrum of the associated elliptic operator in $L^2(Ω)$ is bounded. In the special case that $Ω=R^n $decomposes into subdomains $Ω_+$ and $Ω_-$ with smooth compact boundaries and the weight function is positive on $Ω_+$ and negative on $Ω_-$, it turns out that the nonreal spectrum consists only of normal eigenvalues which can be characterized with a Dirichlet-to-Neumann map.

Variation of discrete spectra of non-negative operators in Krein spaces

We study the variation of the discrete spectrum of a bounded non-negative operator in a Krein space under a non-negative Schatten class perturbation of order $p$. It turns out that there exist so-called extended enumerations of discrete eigenvalues of the unperturbed and the perturbed operator, respectively, whose difference is an $\ell^p$-sequence. This result is a Krein space version of a theorem by T.Kato for bounded selfadjoint operators in Hilbert spaces.

A remark on Schatten-von Neumann properties of resolvent differences of generalized Robin Laplacians on bounded domains

In this note we investigate the asymptotic behaviour of the $s$-numbers of the resolvent difference of two generalized self-adjoint, maximal dissipative or maximal accumulative Robin Laplacians on a bounded domain $Ω$ with smooth boundary $\partialΩ$. For this we apply the recently introduced abstract notion of quasi boundary triples and Weyl functions from extension theory of symmetric operators together with Krein type resolvent formulae and well-known eigenvalue asymptotics of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on $\partialΩ$. It will be shown that the resolvent difference of two generalized Robin Laplacians belongs to the Schatten-von Neumann class of any order $p$ for which $p>(dimΩ-1)/3$. Moreover, we also give a simple sufficient condition for the resolvent difference of two generalized Robin Laplacians to belong to a Schatten-von Neumann class of arbitrary small order. Our results extend and complement classical theorems due to M.Sh.Birman on Schatten-von Neumann properties of the resolvent differences of Dirichlet, Neumann and self-adjoint Robin Laplacians.

A class of nonlinear elliptic boundary value problems

In this paper second order elliptic boundary value problems on bounded domains $Ω\subset\dR^n$ with boundary conditions on $\partialΩ$ depending nonlinearly on the spectral parameter are investigated in an operator theoretic framework. For a general class of locally meromorphic functions in the boundary condition a solution operator of the boundary value problem is constructed with the help of a linearization procedure. In the special case of rational Nevanlinna or Riesz-Herglotz functions on the boundary the solution operator is obtained in an explicit form in the product Hilbert space $L^2(Ω)\oplus (L^2(\partialΩ))^m$, which is a natural generalization of known results on $λ$-linear elliptic boundary value problems and $λ$-rational boundary value problems for ordinary second order differential equations.

Generalized Q-functions and Dirichlet-to-Neumann maps for elliptic differential operators

The classical concept of $Q$-functions associated to symmetric and selfadjoint operators due to M.G. Krein and H. Langer is extended in such a way that the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map in the theory of elliptic differential equations can be interpreted as a generalized $Q$-function. For couplings of uniformly elliptic second order differential expression on bounded and unbounded domains explicit Krein type formulas for the difference of the resolvents and trace formulas in an $H^2$-framework are obtained.

Scattering matrices and Weyl functions

For a scattering system $\{A_Θ,A_0\}$ consisting of selfadjoint extensions $A_Θ$ and $A_0$ of a symmetric operator $A$ with finite deficiency indices, the scattering matrix $\{S_\gT(\gl)\}$ and a spectral shift function $ξ_Θ$ are calculated in terms of the Weyl function associated with the boundary triplet for $A^*$ and a simple proof of the Krein-Birman formula is given. The results are applied to singular Sturm-Liouville operators with scalar and matrix potentials, to Dirac operators and to Schrödinger operators with point interactions.
