Analytic and Numerical Bootstrap for One-Matrix Model and "Unsolvable" Two-Matrix Model

We propose the relaxation bootstrap method for the numerical solution of multi-matrix models in the large $N$ limit, developing and improving the recent proposal of H.Lin. It gives rigorous inequalities on the single trace moments of the matrices up to a given "cutoff" order (length) of the moments. The method combines usual loop equations on the moments and the positivity constraint on the correlation matrix of the moments. We have a rigorous proof of applicability of this method in the case of the one-matrix model where the condition of positivity of the saddle point solution appears to be equivalent to the presence of supports of the eigenvalue distribution only on the real axis and only with positive weight. We demonstrate the numerical efficiency of our method by solving the analytically "unsolvable" two-matrix model with $\mathrm{tr}[A,B]^2$ interaction and quartic potentials, even for solutions with spontaneously broken discrete symmetry. The region of values for computed moments allowed by inequalities quickly shrinks with the increase of the cutoff, allowing the precision of about 6 digits for generic values of couplings in the case of $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetric solutions. Our numerical data are checked against the known analytic results for particular values of parameters.

Disc partition function of 2d $R^2$ gravity from DWG matrix model

We compute the sum over flat surfaces of disc topology with arbitrary number of conical singularities. To that end, we explore and generalize a specific case of the matrix model of dually weighted graphs (DWG) proposed and solved by one of the authors, M. Staudacher and Th. Wynter. Namely, we compute the sum over quadrangulations of the disc with certain boundary conditions, with parameters controlling the number of squares (area), the length of the boundary and the coordination numbers of vertices. The vertices introduce conical defects with angle deficit given by a multiple of $π$, corresponding to positive, zero or negative curvature. Our results interpolate between the well-known 2d quantum gravity solution for the disc with fluctuating 2d metric and the regime of 'almost flat' surfaces with all the negative curvature concentrated on the boundary. We also speculate on possible ways to study the fluctuating 2d geometry with $AdS_2$ background instead of the flat one.

Double-Scaling Limit in Principal Chiral Model: a New Non-Critical String?

We initiate a systematic, non-perturbative study of the large-$N$ expansion in the two-dimensional $\text{SU}(N)\times \text{SU}(N)$ Principal Chiral Model (PCM). Starting with the known infinite-$N$ solution for the ground state at fixed chemical potential \cite{Fateev:1994dp,Fateev:1994ai}, we devise an iterative procedure to solve the Bethe ansatz equations order by order in $1/N$. The first few orders, which we explicitly compute, reveal a systematic enhancement pattern at strong coupling calling for the near-threshold resummation of the large-$N$ expansion. The resulting double-scaling limit bears striking similarities to the $c=1$ non-critical string theory and suggests that the double-scaled PCM is dual to a non-critical string with a $(2+1)$-dimensional target space where an additional dimension emerges dynamically from the $\text{SU}(N)$ Dynkin diagram.

N=4 SYM Quantum Spectral Curve in BFKL regime

We review the applications of the Quantum Spectral Curve (QSC) method to the Regge (BFKL) limit in N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. QSC, based on quantum integrability of the AdS$_5$/CFT$_4$ duality, was initially developed as a tool for the study of the spectrum of anomalous dimensions of local operators in the N=4 SYM in the planar, $N_c\to\infty$ limit. We explain how to apply the QSC for the BFKL limit, which requires non-trivial analytic continuation in spin $S$ and extends the initial construction to non-local light-ray operators. We give a brief review of high precision non-perturbative numerical solutions and analytic perturbative data resulting from this approach. We also describe as a simple example of the QSC construction the leading order in the BFKL limit. We show that the QSC substantially simplifies in this limit and reduces to the Faddeev-Korchemsky Baxter equation for Q-functions. Finally, we review recent results for the Fishnet CFT, which carries a number of similarities with the Lipatov's integrable spin chain for interacting reggeized gluons.

Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz for Fishnet CFT

We present the TBA equations and the Y-system for the exact spectrum of general multi-magnon local operators in the $D$-dimensional anisotropic version of the bi-scalar fishnet CFT. The mixing matrix of such operators is given in terms of fishnet planar graphs of multi-wheel and multi-spiral type. These graphs probe the two main building blocks of the TBA approach that are the magnon dispersion relation and the magnon scattering matrix and which we both obtain by diagonalising suitable graph-building operators. We also obtain the dual version of the TBA equations, which relates, in the continuum limit, $D$-dimensional graphs to two dimensional sigma models in $AdS_{D+1}$. It allows us to verify a general formula obtained by A.~Zamolodchikov for the critical coupling.

New integrable non-gauge 4D QFTs from strongly deformed planar N=4 SYM

We consider the $γ$-deformed $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM in the double scaling limit of large imaginary twists and small coupling, which discards the gauge fields and retains only certain Yukawa and scalar interactions with three arbitrary effective couplings. In the 't~Hooft limit, these 4D theories are integrable, with most of the correlators being conformal such that the whole arsenal of AdS/CFT integrability remains applicable. In particular, for one non-zero effective coupling, we obtain a QFT of two complex scalars with a chiral, quartic interaction. The BMN vacuum anomalous dimension is dominated in each non-zero loop order by a single "wheel" graph, in principle computable by integrability. Thus we also provide an explicit conjecture for the periods of double-wheel graphs with an arbitrary number of spokes.

Finite Size Spectrum of SU(N) Principal Chiral Field from Discrete Hirota Dynamics

Using recently proposed method of discrete Hirota dynamics for integrable (1+1)D quantum field theories on a finite space circle of length L, we derive and test numerically a finite system of nonlinear integral equations for the exact spectrum of energies of SU(N)xSU(N) principal chiral field model as functions of m L, where m is the mass scale. We propose a determinant solution of the underlying Y-system, or Hirota equation, in terms of determinants (Wronskians) of NxN matrices parameterized by N-1 functions of the spectral parameter, with the known analytical properties at finite L. Although the method works in principle for any state, the explicit equations are written for states in the U(1) sector only. For N>2, we encounter and clarify a few subtleties in these equations related to the presence of bound states, absent in the previously considered N=2 case. In particular, we solve these equations numerically for a few low-lying states for N=3 in a wide range of m L.

QCD Pomeron from AdS/CFT Quantum Spectral Curve

Using the methods of the recently proposed Quantum Spectral Curve (QSC) originating from integrability of ${\cal N}=4$ Super--Yang-Mills theory we analytically continue the scaling dimensions of twist-2 operators and reproduce the so-called pomeron eigenvalue of the Balitsky-Fadin-Kuraev-Lipatov (BFKL) equation. Furthermore, we recovered the Faddeev-Korchemsky Baxter equation for Lipatov's spin chain and also found its generalization for the next-to-leading order in the BFKL scaling. Our results provide a non-trivial test of QSC describing the exact spectrum in planar ${\cal N}=4$ SYM at infinitely many loops for a highly nontrivial non-BPS quantity and also opens a way for a systematic expansion in the BFKL regime.

Quantum spectral curve for arbitrary state/operator in AdS$_5$/CFT$_4$

We give a derivation of quantum spectral curve (QSC) - a finite set of Riemann-Hilbert equations for exact spectrum of planar N=4 SYM theory proposed in our recent paper Phys.Rev.Lett. 112 (2014). We also generalize this construction to all local single trace operators of the theory, in contrast to the TBA-like approaches worked out only for a limited class of states. We reveal a rich algebraic and analytic structure of the QSC in terms of a so called Q-system -- a finite set of Baxter-like Q-functions. This new point of view on the finite size spectral problem is shown to be completely compatible, though in a far from trivial way, with already known exact equations (analytic Y-system/TBA, or FiNLIE). We use the knowledge of this underlying Q-system to demonstrate how the classical finite gap solutions and the asymptotic Bethe ansatz emerge from our formalism in appropriate limits.

Three-point correlators of twist-2 operators in N=4 SYM at Born approximation

We calculate two different types of 3-point correlators involving twist-2 operators in the leading weak coupling approximation and all orders in N_c in N=4 SYM theory. Each of three operators in the first correlator can be any component of twist-2 supermultiplet, though the explicit calculation was done for a particular component which is an SU(4) singlet. It is calculated in the leading, Born approximation for arbitrary spins j_1,j_2,j_3. The result significantly simplifies when at least one of the spins is large or equal to zero and the coordinates are restricted to the 2d plane spanned by two light-rays. The second correlator involves two twist-2 operators Tr X\nabla^{j_1}X +..., Tr Z\nabla^{j_2}Z+... and one Konishi operator Tr[\bar Z,\bar X]^2. It vanishes in the lowest g^0 order and is computed at the leading g^2 approximation.

Two-point correlator of twist-2 light-ray operators in N=4 SYM in BFKL approximation

We generalize local operators of the leading twist-2 of N=4 SYM theory to the case of complex Lorentz spin j using principal series representation of sl(2,R). We give the direct computation of correlation function of two such non-local operators in the BFKL regime when j -> 1. The correlator appears to have the expected conformal coordinate dependence governed by the anomalous dimension of twist-2 operator in NLO BFKL approximation predicted by Kotikov and Lipatov.

Baxter's Q-operators and operatorial Backlund flow for quantum (super)-spin chains

We propose the operatorial form of Baxter's TQ-relations in a general form of the operatorial Bäcklund flow describing the nesting process for the inhomogeneous rational gl(K|M) quantum (super)spin chains with twisted periodic boundary conditions. The full set of Q-operators and T-operators on all levels of nesting is explicitly defined. The results are based on a generalization of the identities among the group characters and their group co-derivatives with respect to the twist matrix, found by one of the authors and P.Vieira [V.Kazakov and P.Vieira, JHEP 0810 (2008) 050 [arXiv:0711.2470]]. Our formalism, based on this new "master" identity, allows a systematic and rather straightforward derivation of the whole set of nested Bethe ansatz equations for the spectrum of quantum integrable spin chains, starting from the R-matrix.

Classical tau-function for quantum spin chains

For an arbitrary generalized quantum integrable spin chain we introduce a "master T -operator" which represents a generating function for commuting quantum transfer matrices constructed by means of the fusion procedure in the auxiliary space. We show that the functional relations for the transfer matrices are equivalent to an infinite set of model-independent bilinear equations of the Hirota form for the master T -operator, which allows one to identify it with τ-function of an integrable hierarchy of classical soliton equations. In this paper we consider spin chains with rational GL(N)-invariant R-matrices but the result is independent of a particular functional form of the transfer matrices and directly applies to quantum integrable models with more general (trigonometric and elliptic) R-matrices and to supersymmetric spin chains.

Solving the AdS/CFT Y-system

Using integrability and analyticity properties of the AdS5/CFT4 Y-system we reduce it to a finite set of nonlinear integral equations. The Z4 symmetry of the underlying coset sigma model, in its quantum version, allows for a deeper insight into the analyticity structure of the underlying Y-functions and T-functions, as well as for their analyticity friendly parameterization in terms of Wronskian determinants of Q-functions. As a check for the new equations, we reproduce the numerical results for the Konishi operator previously obtained from the original infinite Y-system.

Integrability for the Full Spectrum of Planar AdS/CFT II

Using the thermodynamical Bethe ansatz method we derive an infinite set of integral non-linear equations for the spectrum of states/operators in AdS/CFT. The Y-system conjectured in arXiv:0901.3753 for the spectrum of all operators in planar N=4 SYM theory follows from these equations. In particular, we present the integral equations for the spectrum of all operators within the sl(2) sector. We prove that all the kernels and free terms entering these TBA equations are real and have nice fusion properties in the relevant mirror kinematics. We find the analogue of DHM formula for the dressing kernel in the mirror kinematics.

PSU(2,2|4) Character of Quasiclassical AdS/CFT

We solve the recently proposed T- and Y-systems (Hirota equation) for the exact spectrum of AdS/CFT in the strong coupling scaling limit for an arbitrary quasiclassical string state. The corresponding T-functions appear to be super-characters of the SU(2,2|4) group in unitary representations with a highest weight, with the classical AdS5xS5 superstring monodromy matrix as the group element. We propose a concise first Weyl-type formula for these characters and show that they correctly reproduce the results of quasiclassical one-loop quantization in all sectors of the superstring, under some natural assumptions. We also speculate about possible relation between the T-functions and the quantum monodromy matrix.

Review of AdS/CFT Integrability, Chapter III.7: Hirota Dynamics for Quantum Integrability

We review recent applications of the integrable discrete Hirota dynamics (Y-system) in the context of calculation of the planar AdS/CFT spectrum. We start from the description of solution of Hirota equations by the Backlund method where the requirement of analyticity results in the nested Bethe ansatz equations. Then we discuss applications of the Hirota dynamics for the analysis of the asymptotic limit of long operators in the AdS/CFT Y-system.

Wronskian Solution for AdS/CFT Y-system

Using the discrete Hirota integrability we find the general solution of the full quantum Y-system for the spectrum of anomalous dimensions of operators in the planar AdS5/CFT4 correspondence in terms of Wronskian-like determinants parameterized by a finite number of Baxter's Q-functions. We consider it as a useful step towards the construction of a finite system of non-linear integral equations (FiNLIE) for the full spectrum. The explicit asymptotic form of all the Q-functions for the large size operators is presented. We establish the symmetries and the analyticity properties of the asymptotic Q-functions and discuss their possible generalization to any finite size operators.

Finite Volume Spectrum of 2D Field Theories from Hirota Dynamics

We propose, using the example of the O(4) sigma model, a general method for solving integrable two dimensional relativistic sigma models in a finite size periodic box. Our starting point is the so-called Y-system, which is equivalent to the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz equations of Yang and Yang. It is derived from the Zamolodchikov scattering theory in the cross channel, for virtual particles along the non-compact direction of the space-time cylinder. The method is based on the integrable Hirota dynamics that follows from the Y-system. The outcome is a nonlinear integral equation for a single complex function, valid for an arbitrary quantum state and accompanied by the finite size analogue of Bethe equations. It is close in spirit to the Destri-deVega (DdV) equation. We present the numerical data for the energy of various states as a function of the size, and derive the general Luscher-type formulas for the finite size corrections. We also re-derive by our method the DdV equation for the SU(2) chiral Gross-Neveu model.

Classical limit of Quantum Sigma-Models from Bethe Ansatz

In these proceedings we review the results of [1-3]. We show on the example of the SU(2) chiral-field how to reproduce the classical finite gap solutions for a large class of integrable sigma models from their exact quantum solutions. These solutions are usually formulated as Bethe ansatz equations for physical particles on a circle, with the interaction given by the factorized S-matrix conjectured from Zamolodchikovs' bootstrap procedure. Our method opens a new systematic way to justify this procedure. As an application of our method to the integrability in AdS/CFT correspondence, we reproduce the asymptotic string Bethe ansatz conjectured eartlier in the S3 x R sector of the Green-Schwarz-Metsaev-Tseytlin superstring. The role of the Virasoro constraints in this setup is clarified.

One-Dimensional String Theory with Vortices as Upside-Down Matrix Oscillator

We study matrix quantum mechanics at a finite temperature equivalent to one dimensional compactified string theory with vortex (winding) excitations. It is explicitly demonstrated that the states transforming under non-trivial U(N) representations describe various configurations vortices and anti-vortices. For example, for the adjoint representation the Feynman graphs (representing discretized world-sheets) contain two faces with the boundaries wrapping around the compactified target space which is equivalent to a vortex-anti-vortex pair. A technique is developed to calculate partition functions in a given representation for the standard matrix oscillator. It enables us to obtain the partition function in the presence of a vortex-anti-vortex pair in the double scaling limit using an analytical continuation to the upside-down oscillator. The Berezinski-Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition occurs in a similar way and at the same temperature as in the flat 2D space. A possible generalization of our technique to any dimension of the embedding space is discussed.

A String Project in Multicolour QCD

Some old and new evidence for the existence of the string (planar random surfaces) representation of multicolour QCD are reviewed. They concern the random surface representation of the strong coupling expansion in lattice multicolour gauge theory in any dimension. Our old idea of modified strong coupling expansion in terms of planar random surfaces, valid for the physical weak coupling phase of the four-dimensional QCD, is explained in detail. Some checks of the validity of this expansion are proposed. (The lectures given in the Trieste Spring School and Workshop-1993 on String Theory).
