On a theorem of Scholze-Weinstein

Let G be the Tate module of a p-divisble group H over a perfect field k of characteristic p. A theorem of Scholze-Weinstein describes G (and therefore H itself) in terms of the Dieudonne module of H; more precisely, it describes G(C) for "good" semiperfect k-algebras C (which is enough to reconstruct G). In these notes we give a self-contained proof of this theorem and explain the relation with the classical descriptions of the Dieudonne functor from Dieudonne modules to p-divisible groups.

Compact generation of the category of D-modules on the stack of G-bundles on a curve

The goal of the paper is to show that the (derived) category of D-modules on the stack Bun_G(X) is compactly generated. Here X is a smooth complete curve, and G is a reductive group. The problem is that Bun_G(X) is not quasi-compact, so the above compact generation is not automatic. The proof is based on the following observation: Bun_G(X) can be written as a union of quasi-compact open substacks, which are "co-truncative", i.e., the j_! extension functor is defined on the entire category of D-modules.

On algebraic spaces with an action of G_m

Let Z be an algebraic space of finite type over a field, equipped with an action of the multiplicative group $G_m$. In this situation we define and study a certain algebraic space equipped with an unramified morphism to $A^1\times Z\times Z$, where $A^1$ is the affine line. (If Z is affine and smooth this is just the closure of the graph of the action map $G_m\times Z\to Z$.) In articles joint with D.Gaitsgory we use this set-up to prove a new result in the geometric theory of automorphic forms and to give a new proof of a very important theorem of T. Braden.

Fourier transform of algebraic measures

These are notes of a talk based on the work arXiv:1212.3630 joint with A. Aizenbud. Let V be a finite-dimensional vector space over a local field F of characteristic 0. Let f be a function on V of the form $f(x)= ψ(P(x))$, where P is a polynomial on V and $ψ$ is a nontrivial additive character of F. Then it is clear that the Fourier transform of f is well-defined as a distribution on $V^*$. Due to J.Bernstein, Hrushovski-Kazhdan, and Cluckers-Loeser, it is known that the Fourier transform is smooth on a non-empty Zariski-open conic subset of $V^*$. The goal of these notes is to sketch a proof of this result (and some related ones), which is very simple modulo resolution of singularities (the existing proofs use D-module theory in the Archimedean case and model theory in the non-Archimedian one).

The wave front set of the Fourier transform of algebraic measures

We study the Fourier transform of the absolute value of a polynomial on a finite-dimensional vector space over a local field of characteristic 0. We prove that this transform is smooth on an open dense set. We prove this result for the Archimedean and the non-Archimedean case in a uniform way. The Archimedean case was proved in [Ber]. The non-Archimedean case was proved in [HK] and [CL]. Our method is different from those described in [Ber,HK,CL]. It is based on Hironaka's desingularization theorem, unlike [Ber] which is based on the theory of D-modules and [HK,CL] which is based on model theory. Our method also gives bounds on the open dense set where the Fourier transform is smooth. These bounds are explicit in terms of resolution of singularities. We also prove the same result on the Fourier transform of other measures of algebraic origins.

Character sheaves on unipotent groups in positive characteristic: foundations

In this article we formulate and prove the main theorems of the theory of character sheaves on unipotent groups over an algebraically closed field of characteristic p>0. In particular, we show that every admissible pair for such a group G gives rise to an L-packet of character sheaves on G, and that, conversely, every L-packet of character sheaves on G arises from a (non-unique) admissible pair. In the appendices we discuss two abstract category theory patterns related to the study of character sheaves. The first appendix sketches a theory of duality for monoidal categories, which generalizes the notion of a rigid monoidal category and is close in spirit to the Grothendieck-Verdier duality theory. In the second one we use a topological field theory approach to define the canonical braided monoidal structure and twist on the equivariant derived category of constructible sheaves on an algebraic group; moreover, we show that this category carries an action of the surface operad. The third appendix proves that the "naive" definition of the equivariant constructible derived category with respect to a unipotent algebraic group is equivalent to the "correct" one.

On the Langlands retraction

Given a root system in a vector space V, Robert Langlands defined in 1973 a canonical retraction of V onto the dominant chamber. In this note we give a short review of the material on this retraction (which is well known under the name of "Langlands' geometric lemmas"). The main purpose of this review is to provide a convenient reference for e-print arXiv:1112.2402 by D.Gaitsgory and me, in which the Langlands retraction is used to define a certain coarsening of the Harder-Narasimhan-Shatz stratification of the stack of G-bundles on a smooth projective curve.

A duality formalism in the spirit of Grothendieck and Verdier

We study monoidal categories that enjoy a certain weakening of the rigidity property, namely, the existence of a dualizing object in the sense of Grothendieck and Verdier. We call them Grothendieck-Verdier categories. Notable examples include the derived category of constructible sheaves on a scheme (with respect to tensor product) as well as the derived and equivariant derived categories of constructible sheaves on an algebraic group (with respect to convolution). We show that the notions of pivotal category and ribbon category, which are well known in the setting of rigid monoidal categories, as well as certain standard results associated with these notions, have natural analogues in the world of Grothendieck-Verdier categories.

Character sheaves on unipotent groups in characteristic p>0

These are slides for a talk given by the authors at the conference "Current developments and directions in the Langlands program" held in honor of Robert Langlands at the Northwestern University in May of 2008. The slides can be used as a short introduction to the theory of characters and character sheaves for unipotent groups in positive characteristic, developed by the authors in a series of articles written between 2006 and 2011. We give an overview of the main results of this theory along with a bit of motivation.

A motivated introduction to character sheaves and the orbit method for unipotent groups in positive characteristic

This article is based on lectures given by the authors in 2005 and 2006. Our first goal is to present an introduction to the orbit method with an emphasis on the character theory of finite nilpotent groups. The second goal (motivated by a recent work of G. Lusztig) is to explain several nontrivial aspects of character theory for finite groups of the form $G(F_{q^n})$, where $G$ is a unipotent algebraic group over a finite field $F_q$. In particular, we introduce the notion of a character sheaf for a unipotent group, and provide a toy model for the representation-theoretic notion of an L-packet.

On braided fusion categories I

This work is a detailed version of arXiv:0704.0195 [math.QA]. We introduce a new notion of the core of a braided fusion category. It allows to separate the part of a braided fusion category that does not come from finite groups. We also give a comprehensive and self-contained exposition of the known results on braided fusion categories without assuming them pre-modular or non-degenerate. The guiding heuristic principle of our work is an analogy between braided fusion categories and Casimir Lie algebras.
