On the statistical stability of families of attracting sets and the contracting Lorenz attractor

We present criteria for statistical stability of attracting sets for vector fields using dynamical conditions on the corresponding generated flows. These conditions are easily verified for all singular-hyperbolic attracting sets of $C^2$ vector fields using known results, providing robust examples of statistically stable singular attracting sets (encompassing in particular the Lorenz and geometrical Lorenz attractors). These conditions are shown to hold also on the persistent but non-robust family of contracting Lorenz flows (also known as Rovella attractors), providing examples of statistical stability among members of non-open families of dynamical systems. In both instances, our conditions void the use of detailed information about perturbations of the one-dimensional induced dynamics on specially chosen Poincaré sections.

On Hoelder-continuity of Oseledets subspaces

For Hoelder cocycles over a Lipschitz base transformation, possibly non-invertible, we show that the subbundles given by the Oseledets Theorem are Hoelder-continuous on compact sets of measure arbitrarily close to 1. The results extend to vector bundle automorphisms, as well as to the Kontsevich-Zorich cocycle over the Teichmueller flow on the moduli space of abelian differentials. Following a recent result of Chaika-Eskin, our results also extend to any given Teichmueller disk.

Dominated splitting for exterior powers and singular hyperbolicity

We relate dominated splitting for a linear multiplicative cocyle with dominated splitting for the exterior powers of this cocycle. For a C1 vector field X on a 3-manifold, we can obtain singular-hyperbolicity using only the tangent map DX of X and a family of indefinite and non-degenerate quadratic forms without using the associated flow X_t and its derivative DX_t. As a consequence, we show the existence of adapted metrics for singular-hyperbolic sets for three-dimensional C1 vector fields.

Infinitesimal Lyapunov functions for singular flows

We present an extension of the notion of infinitesimal Lyapunov function to singular flows, and from this technique we deduce a characterization of partial/sectional hyperbolic sets. In absence of singularities, we can also characterize uniform hyperbolicity. These conditions can be expressed using the space derivative DX of the vector field X together with a field of infinitesimal Lyapunov functions only, and are reduced to checking that a certain symmetric operator is positive definite at the tangent space of every point of the trapping region.

Absolutely continuous invariant measures for random non-uniformly expanding maps

We prove existence of (at most denumerable many) absolutely continuous invariant probability measures for random one-dimensional dynamical systems with asymptotic expansion. If the rate of expansion (Lyapunov exponents) is bounded away from zero, we obtain finitely many ergodic absolutely continuous invariant probability measures, describing the asymptotics of almost every point. We also prove a similar result for higher-dimensional random non-uniformly expanding dynamical systems. The results are consequences of the construction of such measures for skew-products with essentially arbitrary base dynamics and asymptotic expansion along the fibers. In both cases our method deals with either critical or singular points for the random maps.

Finiteness results for subgroups of finite extensions

We discuss in the context of finite extensions two classical theorems of Takahasi and Howson on subgroups of free groups. We provide bounds for the rank of the intersection of subgroups within classes of groups such as virtually free groups, virtually nilpotent groups or fundamental groups of finite graphs of groups with virtually polycyclic vertex groups and finite edge groups. As an application of our generalization of Takahasi's Theorem, we provide an uniform bound for the rank of the periodic subgroup of any endomorphism of the fundamental group of a given finite graph of groups with finitely generated virtually nilpotent vertex groups and finite edge groups.

Statistical properties of Lorenz like flows, recent developments and perspectives

We comment on mathematical results about the statistical behavior of Lorenz equations an its attractor, and more generally to the class of singular hyperbolic systems. The mathematical theory of such kind of systems turned out to be surprisingly difficult. It is remarkable that a rigorous proof of the existence of the Lorenz attractor was presented only around the year 2000 with a computer assisted proof together with an extension of the hyperbolic theory developed to encompass attractors robustly containing equilibria. We present some of the main results on the statisitcal behavior of such systems. We show that for attractors of three-dimensional flows, robust chaotic behavior is equivalent to the existence of certain hyperbolic structures, known as singular-hyperbolicity. These structures, in turn, are associated to the existence of physical measures: \emph{in low dimensions, robust chaotic behavior for flows ensures the existence of a physical measure}. We then give more details on recent results on the dynamics of singular-hyperbolic (Lorenz-like) attractors.

Adapted random perturbations for non-uniformly expanding maps

We obtain stochastic stability of C2 non-uniformly expanding one-dimensional endomorphisms, requiring only that the first hyperbolic time map be L^{p}-integrable for p>3. We show that, under this condition (which depends only on the unperturbed dynamics), we can construct a random perturbation that preserves the original hyperbolic times of the unperturbed map and, therefore, to obtain non-uniform expansion for random orbits. This ensures that the first hyperbolic time map is uniformly integrable for all small enough noise levels, which is known to imply stochastic stability. The method enables us to obtain stochastic stability for a class of maps with infinitely many critical points. For higher dimensional endomorphisms, a similar result is obtained, but under stronger assumptions.

Decay of correlations for maps with uniformly contracting fibers and logarithm law for singular hyperbolic attractors

We consider two dimensional maps preserving a foliation which is uniformly contracting and a one dimensional associated quotient map having exponential convergence to equilibrium (iterates of Lebesgue measure converge exponentially fast to physical measure). We prove that these maps have exponential decay of correlations over a large class of observables. We use this result to deduce exponential decay of correlations for the Poincare maps of a large class of singular hyperbolic flows. From this we deduce logarithm laws for these flows.

On sensitive dependence on initial conditions and existence of physical measure for 3-flows

After reviewing known results on sensitiveness and also on robustness of attractors together with observations on their proofs, we show that for attractors of three-dimensional flows, robust chaotic behavior meaning sensitiveness to initial conditions for the past as well for the future for all nearby flows) is equivalent to the existence of certain hyperbolic structures. These structures, in turn, are associated to the existence of physical measures. In short in low dimensions, robust chaotic behavior for smooth flows ensures the existence of a physical measure.

On the abundance of non-zero central Lyapunov exponents, physical measures and stable ergodicity for partially hyperbolic dynamics

We show that the time-1 map of an Anosov flow, whose strong-unstable foliation is $C^2$ smooth and minimal, is $C^2$ close to a diffeomorphism having positive central Lyapunov exponent Lebesgue almost everywhere and a unique physical measure with full basin, which is $C^r$ stably ergodic. Our method is perturbative and does not rely on preservation of a smooth measure.

preprint2009arXiv

Lorenz-like chaotic attractors revised

We describe some recent results on the dynamics of singular-hyperbolic (or Lorenz-like) attractors: attractors in this class are expansive and so sensitive with respect to initial data; they admit a unique physical measure whose support is the whole attractor, which is hyperbolic and the equilibrium state with respect to the center-unstable Jacobian; the hitting time associated to a geometric Lorenz attractor satisfies a logarithm law; the rate of large deviations for the physical measure on the ergodic basin of a geometric Lorenz attractor is exponential.

Physical measures for infinite-modal maps

We analyze certain parametrized families of one-dimensional maps with infinitely many critical points from the measure-theoretical point of view. We prove that such families have absolutely continuous invariant probability measures for a positive Lebesgue measure subset of parameters. Moreover we show that both the densities of these measures and their entropy vary continuously with the parameter. In addition we obtain exponential rate of mixing for these measures and also that they satisfy the Central Limit Theorem.

Hyperbolic Dynamical Systems

The theory of uniformly hyperbolic dynamical systems was initiated in the 1960's (though its roots stretch far back into the 19th century) by S. Smale, his students and collaborators, in the west, and D. Anosov, Ya. Sinai, V. Arnold, in the former Soviet Union. It came to encompass a detailed description of a large class of systems, often with very complex evolution. Moreover, it provided a very precise characterization of structurally stable dynamics, which was one of its original main goals. The early developments were motivated by the problem of characterizing structural stability of dynamical systems, a notion that had been introduced in the 1930's by A. Andronov and L. Pontryagin. Inspired by the pioneering work of M. Peixoto on circle maps and surface flows, Smale introduced a class of gradient-like systems, having a finite number of periodic orbits, which should be structurally stable and, moreover, should constitute the majority (an open and dense subset) of all dynamical systems. Stability and openness were eventually established, in the thesis of J. Palis. However, contemporary results of M. Levinson, based on previous work by M. Cartwright and J. Littlewood, provided examples of open subsets of dynamical systems all of which have an infinite number of periodic orbits.

Large deviations bound for semiflows over a non-uniformly expanding base

We obtain a exponential large deviation upper bound for continuous observables on suspension semiflows over a non-uniformly expanding base transformation with non-flat singularities or criticalities, where the roof function defining the suspension behaves like the logarithm of the distance to the singular/critical set of the base map. That is, given a continuous function we consider its space average with respect to a physical measure and compare this with the time averages along orbits of the semiflow, showing that the Lebesgue measure of the set of points whose time averages stay away from the space average tends to zero exponentially fast as time goes to infinity. Suspension semiflows model the dynamics of flows admitting cross-sections, where the dynamics of the base is given by the Poincaré return map and the roof function is the return time to the cross-section. The results are applicable in particular to semiflows modeling the geometric Lorenz attractors and the Lorenz flow, as well as other semiflows with multidimensional non-uniformly expanding base with non-flat singularities and/or criticalities under slow recurrence rate conditions to this singular/critical set.

Stochastic stability of diffeomorphisms with dominated splitting

We prove that the statistical properties of random perturbations of a nonuniformly hyperbolic diffeomorphism are described by a finite number of stationary measures. We also give necessary and sufficient conditions for the stochastic stability of such dynamical systems. We show that a certain $C^2$-open class of nonuniformly hyperbolic diffeomorphisms introduced in [Alves, J; Bonatti, C. and Viana, V., SRB measures for partially hyperbolic systems with mostly expanding central direction, Invent. Math., 140 (2000), 351-398] are stochastically stable. Our setting encompasses that of partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms as well. Moreover, the techniques used enable us to obtain SRB measures in this setting through zero-noise limit measures.

Hyperbolic times: frequency versus integrability

We consider dynamical systems on compact manifolds, which are local diffeomorphisms outside an exceptional set (a compact submanifold). We are interested in analyzing the relation between the integrability (with respect to Lebesgue measure) of the first hyperbolic time map and the existence of positive frequency of hyperbolic times. We show that some (strong) integrability of the first hyperbolic time map implies the existence of a positive Lebesgue measure subset of points with positive frequency of hyperbolic times. We also present an example of a map with positive frequency of hyperbolic times at Lebesgue almost every point but whose first hyperbolic time map is not integrable with respect to the Lebesgue measure.

Random perturbations of non-uniformly expanding maps

We give both sufficient conditions and necessary conditions for the stochastic stability of non-uniformly expanding maps either with or without critical sets. We also show that the number of probability measures describing the statistical asymptotic behaviour of random orbits is bounded by the number of SRB measures if the noise level is small enough. As an application of these results we prove the stochastic stability of certain classes of non-uniformly expanding maps introduced in \cite{V} and \cite{ABV}.
