Statistical instability for contracting Lorenz flows

We consider one parameter families of vector fields introduced by Rovella, obtained through modifying the eigenvalues of the geometric Lorenz attractor, replacing the expanding condition on the eigenvalues of the singularity by a contracting one. We show that there is no statistical stability within the set of parameters for which there is a physical measure supported on the attractor. This is achieved obtaining a similar conclusion at the level of the corresponding one-dimensional contracting Lorenz maps.

Gibbs-Markov-Young structures with (stretched) exponential tail for partially hyperbolic attractors

We study partially hyperbolic sets $K$ on a Riemannian manifold $M$ whose tangent space splits as $T_K M=E^{cu}\oplus E^{s}$, for which the center-unstable direction $E^{cu}$ is non-uniformly expanding on some local unstable disk. We prove that the (stretched) exponential decay of recurrence times for an induced scheme can be deduced under the assumption of (stretched) exponential decay of the time that typical points need to achieve some uniform expanding in the center-unstable direction. This extends a result by Alves and Pinheiro to the (stretched) exponential case. As an application of our main result we obtain (stretched) exponential decay of correlations and exponentially large deviations for a class of partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms introduced by Alves, Bonatti and Viana.

SRB measures for partially hyperbolic systems whose central direction is weakly expanding

We consider partially hyperbolic \( C^{1+} \) diffeomorphisms of compact Riemannian manifolds of arbitrary dimension which admit a partially hyperbolic tangent bundle decomposition \( E^s\oplus E^{cu} \). Assuming the existence of a set of positive Lebesgue measure on which \( f \) satisfies a weak nonuniform expansivity assumption in the centre~unstable direction, we prove that there exists at most a finite number of transitive attractors each of which supports an SRB measure. As part of our argument, we prove that each attractor admits a Gibbs-Markov-Young geometric structure with integrable return times. We also characterize in this setting SRB measures which are liftable to Gibbs-Markov-Young structures.

Statistical properties of diffeomorfisms with weak invariant manifolds

We consider diffeomorphisms of compact Riemmanian manifolds which have a Gibbs-Markov-Young structures, consisting of a reference set $Λ$ with a hyperbolic product structure and a countable Markov partition. We assume polynomial contraction on stable leaves, polynomial backward contraction on unstable leaves, a bounded distortion property and a certain regularity of the stable foliation. We establish a control on the decay of correlations and large deviations of the SRB measure of the dynamical system, based on a polynomial control on the Lebesgue measure of the tail of return times. Finally, we present an example of a dynamical system defined on the torus and prove that it verifies the properties of the Gibbs-Markov-Young structure that we considered.

Statistical stability of Geometric Lorenz attractors

We consider the robust family of Geometric Lorenz attractors. These attractors are chaotic in the sense that they are transitive and have sensitive dependence on the initial conditions. Moreover, they support SRB measures whose ergodic basins cover a full Lebesgue measure subset of points in the topological basin of attraction. Here we prove that the SRB measures depend continuously on the dynamics in the weak$^*$ topology.

Geometry of expanding absolutely continuous invariant measures and the liftability problem

We show that for a large class of maps on manifolds of arbitrary finite dimension, the existence of a Gibbs-Markov-Young structure (with Lebesgue as the reference measure) is a necessary as well as sufficient condition for the existence of an invariant probability measure which is absolutely continuous measure (with respect to Lebesgue) and for which all Lyapunov exponents are positive.

Statistical stability and limit laws for Rovella maps

We consider the family of one-dimensional maps arising from the contracting Lorenz attractors studied by Rovella. Benedicks-Carleson techniques were used by Rovella to prove that there is a one-parameter family of maps whose derivatives along their critical orbits increase exponentially fast and the critical orbits have slow recurrent to the critical point. Metzger proved that these maps have a unique absolutely continuous ergodic invariant probability measure (SRB measure). Here we use the technique developed by Freitas and show that the tail set (the set of points which at a given time have not achieved either the exponential growth of derivative or the slow recurrence) decays exponentially fast as time passes. As a consequence, we obtain the continuous variation of the densities of the SRB measures and associated metric entropies with the parameter. Our main result also implies some statistical properties for these maps.

Explosion of smoothness for conjugacies between multimodal maps

Let $f$ and $g$ be smooth multimodal maps with no periodic attractors and no neutral points. If a topological conjugacy $h$ between $f$ and $g$ is $C^{1}$ at a point in the nearby expanding set of $f$, then $h$ is a smooth diffeomorphism in the basin of attraction of a renormalization interval of $f$. In particular, if $f:I \to I$ and $g:J \to J$ are $C^r$ unimodal maps and $h$ is $C^{1}$ at a boundary of $I$ then $h$ is $C^r$ in $I$.

Strong stochastic stability for non-uniformly expanding maps

We consider random perturbations of discrete-time dynamical systems. We give sufficient conditions for the stochastic stability of certain classes of maps, in a strong sense. This improves the main result in J. F. Alves, V. Araujo, Random perturbations of non-uniformly expanding maps, Asterisque 286 (2003), 25--62, where it was proved the convergence of the stationary measures of the random process to the SRB measure of the initial system in the weak* topology. Here, under slightly weaker assumptions on the random perturbations, we obtain a stronger version of stochastic stability: convergence of the densities of the stationary measures to the density of the SRB measure of the unperturbed system in the L1-norm. As an application of our results we obtain strong stochastic stability for two classes of non-uniformly expanding maps. The first one is an open class of local diffeomorphisms introduced in J. F. Alves, C. Bonatti, M. Viana, SRB measures for partially hyperbolic systems whose central direction is mostly expanding, Invent. Math. 140 (2000), 351--398, and the second one the class of Viana maps.

Stochastic stability of diffeomorphisms with dominated splitting

We prove that the statistical properties of random perturbations of a nonuniformly hyperbolic diffeomorphism are described by a finite number of stationary measures. We also give necessary and sufficient conditions for the stochastic stability of such dynamical systems. We show that a certain $C^2$-open class of nonuniformly hyperbolic diffeomorphisms introduced in [Alves, J; Bonatti, C. and Viana, V., SRB measures for partially hyperbolic systems with mostly expanding central direction, Invent. Math., 140 (2000), 351-398] are stochastically stable. Our setting encompasses that of partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms as well. Moreover, the techniques used enable us to obtain SRB measures in this setting through zero-noise limit measures.

Hyperbolic times: frequency vs. integrability

We consider dynamical systems on compact manifolds, which are local diffeomorphisms outside an exceptional set (a compact submanifold). We are interested in analyzing the relation between the integrability (with respect to Lebesgue measure) of the first hyperbolic time map and the existence of positive frequency of hyperbolic times. We show that some (strong) integrability of the first hyperbolic time map implies positive frequency of hyperbolic times. We also present an example of a map with positive frequency of hyperbolic times at Lebesgue almost every point but whose first hyperbolic time map is not integrable with respect to the Lebesgue measure.

preprint2000arXiv

Random perturbations of non-uniformly expanding maps

We give both sufficient conditions and necessary conditions for the stochastic stability of non-uniformly expanding maps either with or without critical sets. We also show that the number of probability measures describing the statistical asymptotic behaviour of random orbits is bounded by the number of SRB measures if the noise level is small enough. As an application of these results we prove the stochastic stability of certain classes of non-uniformly expanding maps introduced in \cite{V} and \cite{ABV}.
