Čerenkov free-electron laser in side-wall configuration

In this paper, we have proposed a Čerenkov free-electron laser (CFEL) with metallic side walls, which are used to confine an electromagnetic surface mode supported by a thin dielectric slab placed on top of a conducting surface. This leads to an enhancement in coupling between the optical mode and the co-propagating electron beam, and consequently, performance of the CFEL is improved. We set up coupled Maxwell-Lorentz equations for the system, in analogy with an undulator based conventional FEL, and obtain formulas for the small-signal gain and growth rate. It is shown that small signal gain and growth rate in this configuration are larger compared to the configuration without the side walls. In the nonlinear regime, we solve the coupled Maxwell-Lorentz equations numerically and study the saturation behaviour of the system. It is found that the Čerenkov FEL with side walls saturates quickly, and produces powerful coherent terahertz radiation.

Multipacting studies of beta_g=0.61 and beta_g =0.9, 650 MHz Elliptical SRF Cavities

Multipacting is seen as a performance limiting phenomenon for the superconducting radio frequency (SRF) cavities. Numerical simulations are essential to pre-empt the experimentally observed multipacting conditions. Readily available codes(e.g. FISHPACT, MULTIPACT,CST etc.) are widely used to simulate the phenomenon of multipacting in such cases. Most of the contemporary two dimensional (2D) codes are unable to detect multipacting in the elliptical cavities because they use a simplistic secondary emission model, where a constant value of emission kinetic energy of secondary electrons is assumed. Some three-dimensional (3D) codes, which use a more realistic and sophisticated secondary emission model (Furman model) by following a probability distribution for the emission kinetic energy of secondary electrons, are able to correctly predict the occurance of multipacting. These 3D softwares however require large data handling and are slower than contemporary 2D codes. We have developed a 2D code for the multipacting analysis for axisymmetric structures, which is based on the Furman model. Since our code is 2D, it is faster than the 3D codes. This makes it possible to perform an accurate multipacting analysis of multipacting within a resaonalble computational time, thus achieving an accuracy as good as in the case of 3D codes, but requiring significantly less computing time. We have used our code for determining the multipacting prone range of values for Eacc in beta_g =0.61 and beta_g =0.9, 650 MHz mid-cell elliptical cavities that we have recently designed for the medium and high energy section of the proposed Indian Spallation Neutron Source (ISNS) project.

Reference Physics Design for 1 GeV Injector Linac and Accumulator Ring for Indian Spallation Neutron Source

As a part of the ongoing XIIth plan project titled "R&D activities for high energy proton linac based spallation neutron source", the work on physics design of various subsystems of the injector linac and accumulator ring has been taken up at RRCAT, Indore. For the 1 GeV H- injector linac, physics design studies of individual systems have been completed, and the end to end beam dynamics simulation studies have been performed to ensure that the stringent beam dynamics criteria are satisfied for the optimized lattice. Physics design studies to optimize the linear lattice of the accumulator ring have also been completed. The design studies for the beam transport lines from the injector linac to the accumulator ring, and from the accumulator ring to target are currently in progress. This report describes the physics design of various systems of the injector linac and the accumulator ring.

Three-dimensional analysis of the surface mode supported in Čerenkov and Smith-Purcell free-electron lasers

In Čerenkov and Smith-Purcell free-electron lasers (FELs), a resonant interaction between the electron beam and the co-propagating surface mode can produce copious amount of coherent terahertz (THz) radiation. We perform a three-dimensional (3D) analysis of the surface mode, taking the effect of attenuation into account, and set up 3D Maxwell-Lorentz equations for both these systems. Based on this analysis, we determine the requirements on the electron beam parameters, i.e., beam emittance, beam size and beam current for the successful operation of a Čerenkov FEL.

HT-Ring Paxos: Theory of High Throughput State-Machine Replication for Clustered Data Centers

Implementations of state-machine replication (SMR) prevalently use the variants of Paxos. Some of the recent variants of Paxos like, Ring Paxos, Multi-Ring Paxos, S-Paxos and HT-Paxos achieve significantly high throughput. However, to meet the growing demand of high throughput, we are proposing HT-Ring Paxos, a variant of Paxos that is basically derived from the classical Paxos. Moreover, it also adopts some fundamental concepts of Ring Paxos, S-Paxos and HT-Paxos for increasing throughput. Furthermore, HT-Ring Paxos is best suitable for clustered data centers and achieves comparatively high throughput among all variants of Paxos. However, similar to Ring Paxos, latency of the HT-Ring Paxos is quite high as compared with other variants of Paxos.

Terahertz radiation source using an industrial electron linear accelerator

High power ($\sim 100$ kW) industrial electron linear accelerators (linacs) are used for irradiation applications e.g., for pasteurization of food products, disinfection of medical waste, etc. We propose that high power electron beam from such an industrial linac can be first passed through an undulator to generate powerful terahertz (THz) radiation, and the spent electron beam coming out of the undulator can still be used for industrial applications. This will enhance the utilisation of a high power industrial linac. We have performed calculation of spontaneous emission in the undulator to show that for typical parameters, continuous terahertz radiation having power of the order of $μ$W can be produced, which may be useful for many scientific applications.

An Efficient Read Dominant Data Replication Protocol under Serial Isolation using Quorum Consensus Approach

In distributed systems, data replication provides better availability, higher read capacity, improved access efficiency and lower bandwidth requirements in the system. In this paper, we propose a significantly efficient approach of the data replication for serial isolation by using newly proposed Circular quorum systems. This paper has three major contributions. First, we have proposed the Circular quorum systems that generalize the various existing quorum systems, such as Read-one-write-all (ROWA) quorum systems, Majority quorum systems, Grid quorum systems, Diamond quorum systems, D-Space quorum systems, Multi-dimensional-grid quorum systems and Generalized-grid quorum systems. Second, Circular quorum systems not only generalizes but also improves the performance over existing quorum systems of their category. Third, we proposed a highly available Circular quorum consensus protocol for data replication under serial isolation level that uses a suitable Circular quorum system for read dominant scenario.

Analysis of Čerenkov free-electron lasers

We present an analysis of a Čerenkov free-electron laser (FEL) driven by a flat electron beam. In this system, an electron beam travelling close to a dielectric slab placed at the top of an ideal conductor interacts with the co-propagating electromagnetic surface mode. The surface mode arises due to singularity in the reflectivity of the dielectric slab for the incident evanescent wave. Under suitable conditions, the surface mode grows as a result of interaction with the electron beam. We show that the interaction of the surface mode with the co-propagating electron beam can be rigorously understood by analyzing the singularity in the reflectivity. Using this approach, we set up coupled Maxwell-Lorentz equations for the system, in analogy with conventional undulator based FELs. We solve these equations analytically in the small signal regime to obtain formulae for the small signal gain, and the spatial growth rate. Saturation behaviour of the system is analyzed by solving these equations numerically in the nonlinear regime. Results of numerical simulations are in good agreement with the analytical calculations in the linear regime. We find that Čerenkov FEL under appropriate conditions can produce copious coherent terahertz (THz) radiation.

HT-Paxos: High Throughput State-Machine Replication Protocol for Large Clustered Data Centers

Paxos is a prominent theory of state machine replication. Recent data intensive Systems those implement state machine replication generally require high throughput. Earlier versions of Paxos as few of them are classical Paxos, fast Paxos and generalized Paxos have a major focus on fault tolerance and latency but lacking in terms of throughput and scalability. A major reason for this is the heavyweight leader. Through offloading the leader, we can further increase throughput of the system. Ring Paxos, Multi Ring Paxos and S-Paxos are few prominent attempts in this direction for clustered data centers. In this paper, we are proposing HT-Paxos, a variant of Paxos that one is the best suitable for any large clustered data center. HT-Paxos further offloads the leader very significantly and hence increases the throughput and scalability of the system. While at the same time, among high throughput state-machine replication protocols, HT-Paxos provides reasonably low latency and response time.

A Study of Dynamic Lorentz Force Detuning of 650 MHz βg= 0.9 Superconducting Radiofrequency Cavity

The small bandwidth of superconducting cavities makes the study of dynamic Lorentz force detuning and its compensation indispensable in case of pulsed mode operation of high gradient accelerators. In this paper, we present the study of this detuning and also propose an optimized design for five cell 650 MHz βg= 0.9 elliptic superconducting cavities, which will be used in the high energy section of the 1 GeV H- linear accelerator for the proposed Indian Spallation Neutron Source project, by suitably inserting the inter-cell stiffeners. The paper presents a sequential design methodology which starts with study of static Lorentz force detuning and tunability; and progresses to find out the structural modes and related dynamic detuning values by performing transient structural dynamics calculations. The developed methodology is general in nature and can be used for a three dimensional model of any geometry. The work will be useful for optimizing the design against dynamic Lorentz force detuning of superconducting radiofrequency cavities of any shape.

On the Electromagnetic Design of a Beta_g= 0.61, 650 MHz Superconducting Radiofrequency Cavity

We present the calculations for electromagnetic design of a Beta_g = 0.61, multi-cell superconducting radiofrequency cavity for the Indian Spallation Neutron Source (ISNS) project. Geometry of the mid-cells is optimized using a step by step, one-dimensional optimization technique. This is followed by the optimization of end-cells, which is done to achieve the required field flatness, as well as to avoid trapping of higher order modes. Calculations of the threshold beam current for the excitation of regenerative beam break up instability excited by the dipole modes is also presented, which is followed by wake field calculations and estimation of its effects. Specific aspects relevant to design calculations for medium Beta_g cavities, compared to high Beta_g cavities are highlighted in the paper. Finally, studies are performed for the static as well as dynamic Lorentz Force Detuning (LFD), based on which the stiffness design of the cavity is optimized.

Electromagnetic Design of β_g= 0.9, 650 MHz Superconducting Radiofrequency Cavity

We present the electromagnetic design study of a multi cell, β_g= 0.9, 650 MHz elliptic superconducting radiofrequency cavity, which can be used for accelerating H- particles in the linear accelerator part of a Spallation Neutron source. The design has been optimized for maximum achievable acceleration gradient by varying the geometry parameters of the cavity, for which a simple and general procedure is evolved that we describe in the paper. For the optimized geometry, we have studied the higher order modes supported by the cavity, and the threshold current for the excitation of the regenerative beam break up instability due to dipole modes has been estimated. Lorentz force detuning studies have also been performed for the optimized design and the calculations are presented to find the optimum location of the stiffener ring to compensate for the Lorentz force detuning.
