On the variety of the inflection points of plane cubic curves

In the paper, we investigate properties of the nine-dimensional variety of the inflection points of the plane cubic curves. The description of local monodromy groups of the set of inflection points near singular cubic curves is given. Also, it is given a detailed description of the normalizations of the surfaces of the inflection points of plane cubic curves belonging to general two-dimensional linear systems of cubic curves, The vanishing of the irregularity a smooth manifold birationally isomorphic to the variety of the inflection points of the plane cubic curves is proved.

On the Galois groups of the dualizing coverings for plane curves

Let $C_1$ be an irreducible component of a reduced projective curve $C\subset \mathbb P^2$ defined over the field $\mathbb C$, $\mathrm{deg} C_1\geq 2$, and let $T$ be the set of lines $l\subset \mathbb P^2$ meeting $C$ transversally. In the article, we prove that for a line $l_0\in T$ and any two points $P_1,P_2\in C_1\cap l_0$ there is a loop $l_t\subset T$, $t\in [0,1]$, such that the movement of the line $l_0$ along the loop $l_t$ induces the transposition of the points $P_1$, $P_2$ and the identity permutation of the other points of $C\cap l_0$.

The ambiguity index of an equipped finite group

In \cite{Ku0}, the ambiguity index $a_{(G,O)}$ was introduced for each equipped finite group $(G,O)$. It is equal to the number of connected components of a Hurwitz space parametrizing coverings of a projective line with Galois group $G$ assuming that all local monodromies belong to conjugacy classes $O$ in $G$ and the number of branch points is greater than some constant. We prove in this article that the ambiguity index can be identified with the size of a generalization of so called Bogomolov multiplier (\cite{Kun1}, see also \cite{BO87}) and hence can be easily computed for many pairs $(G,O)$.

A Remark on Classical Pluecker's formulae

For any reduced curve $C\subset \mathbb P^2$, we define the notions of the number of its virtual cusps $c_v$ and the number of its virtual nodes $n_v$ which are non-negative, coincide respectively with the numbers of ordinary cusps and nodes in the case of cuspidal curves, and if $\hat C$ is the dual curve of an irreducible curve $C$ and $\hat n_v$ and $\hat c_v$ are the numbers of its virtual nodes and virtual cusps, then the integers $c_v$, $n_v$, $\hat c_v$, $\hat n_v$ satisfy Classical Plücker's formulae.

Factorization semigroups and irreducible components of Hurwitz space. II

This article is a continuation of the article with the same title (see arXiv:1003.2953v1). Let {\rm $\text{HUR}_{d,t}^{G}(\mathbb P^1)$} be the Hurwitz space of degree $d$ coverings of the projective line $\mathbb P^1$ with Galois group $\mathcal S_d$ and having fixed monodromy type $t$ consisting of a collection of local monodromy types (that is, a collection of conjugacy classes of permutations $σ$ of the symmetric group $\mathcal S_d$ acting on the set $I_d=\{1,...,d\}$). We prove that if the type $t$ contains big enough number of local monodromies belonging to the conjugacy class $C$ of an odd permutation $σ$ which leaves fixed $f_C\geq 2$ elements of $I_d$, then the Hurwitz space {\rm $\text{HUR}_{d,t}^{\mathcal S_d}(\mathbb P^1)$} is irreducible.

Factorizations in finite groups

A necessary condition for uniqueness of factorizations of elements of a finite group $G$ with factors belonging to a union of some conjugacy classes of $G$ is given. This condition is sufficient if the number of factors belonging to each conjugacy class is big enough. The result is applied to the problem on the number of irreducible components of the Hurwitz space of degree $d$ marked coverings of $\mathbb P^1$ with given Galois group $G$ and fixed collection of local monodromies.

Factorization semigroups and irreducible components of Hurwitz space

We introduce a natural structure of a semigroup (isomorphic to a factorization semigroup of the unity in the symmetric group) on the set of irreducible components of Hurwitz space of marked degree $d$ coverings of $\mathbb P^1$ of fixed ramification types. It is proved that this semigroup is finitely presented. The problem when collections of ramification types define uniquely the corresponding irreducible components of the Hurwitz space is investigated. In particular, the set of irreducible components of the Hurwitz space of three-sheeted coverings of the projective line is completely described.

Old and new examples of surfaces of general type with $p_g=0$

Surfaces of general type with geometric genus $p_g=0$, which can be given as Galois covering of the projective plane branched over an arrangement of lines with Galois group $G=(\mathbb Z/q\mathbb Z)^k$, where $k\geq 2$ and $q$ is a prime number, are investigated. The classical Godeaux surface, Campedelli surfaces, Burniat surfaces, and a new surface $X$ with $K_X^2=6$ and $(\mathbb Z/3\mathbb Z)^3\subset {Tors} (X)$ can be obtained as such coverings. It is proved that the group of automorphisms of a generic surface of the Campedelli type is isomorphic to $(\mathbb Z/2\mathbb Z)^3$. The irreducible components of the moduli space containing the Burniat surfaces are described. It is shown that the Burniat surface $S$ with $K_S^2=2$ has the torsion group ${Tors} (S)\simeq (\mathbb Z/2\mathbb Z)^3$, (therefore, it belongs to the family of the Campedelli surfaces), i.e., the corresponding statement in the papers of C. Peters "On certain examples of surfaces with $p_g=0$" in Nagoya Math. J. {\bf 66} (1977), and I. Dolgachev "Algebraic surfaces with $q=p_g=0$" in {\it Algebraic surfaces}, Liguori, Napoli (1977), and in the book of W. Barth, C. Peters, A. Van de Ven "Compact complex surfaces", p. 237, about the torsion group of the Burniat surface $S$ with $K_S^2=2$ is not correct.

On braid monodromy factorizations

We introduce and develop a language of semigroups over the braid groups for a study of braid monodromy factorizations (bmf's) of plane algebraic curves and other related objects. As an application we give a new proof of Orevkov's theorem on realization of a bmf over a disc by algebraic curves and show that the complexity of such a realization can not be bounded in terms of the types of the factors of the bmf. Besides, we prove that the type of a bmf is distinguishing Hurwitz curves with singularities of inseparable types up to $H$-isotopy and $J$-holomorphic cuspidal curves in $\C P^2$ up to symplectic isotopy.

Generic coverings of plane with A-D-E-singularities

We generalize results of the paper math.AG/9803144, in which Chisini's conjecture on the unique reconstruction of f by the curve B is investigated. For this fibre products of generic coverings are studied. The main inequality bounding the degree of a covering in the case of existence of two nonequivalent coverings with the branch curve B is obtained. This inequality is used for the proof of the Chisini conjecture for m-canonical coverings of surfaces of general type for $m\ge 5$.
