Optimal Band Structure for Thermoelectrics with Realistic Scattering and Bands

Understanding how to optimize electronic band structures for thermoelectrics is a topic of long-standing interest in the community. Prior models have been limited to simplified bands and/or scattering models. In this study, we apply more rigorous scattering treatments to more realistic model band structures - upward-parabolic bands that inflect to an inverted parabolic behavior - including cases of multiple bands. In contrast to common descriptors (e.g., quality factor and complexity factor), the degree to which multiple pockets improve thermoelectric performance is bounded by interband scattering and the relative shapes of the bands. We establish that extremely anisotropic `flat-and-dispersive' bands, although best-performing in theory, may not represent a promising design strategy in practice. Critically, we determine optimum bandwidth, dependent on temperature and lattice thermal conductivity, from perfect transport cutoffs that can in theory significantly boost $zT$ beyond the values attainable through intrinsic band structures alone. Our analysis should be widely useful as the thermoelectric research community eyes $zT>3$.

Ultralow Thermal Conductivity in Full-Heusler Semiconductors

Semiconducting half- and, to a lesser extent, full-Heusler compounds are promising thermoelectric materials due to their compelling electronic properties with large power factors. However, intrinsically high thermal conductivity resulting in a limited thermoelectric efficiency has so far impeded their widespread use in practical applications. Here, we report the computational discovery of a class of hitherto unknown stable semiconducting full-Heusler compounds with ten valence electrons ($X_2YZ$, $X$=Ca, Sr, and Ba; $Y$= Au and Hg; $Z$=Sn, Pb, As, Sb, and Bi) through high-throughput $ab-initio$ screening. These new compounds exhibit ultralow lattice thermal conductivity $κ_{\text{L}}$ close to the theoretical minimum due to strong anharmonic rattling of the heavy noble metals, while preserving high power factors, thus resulting in excellent phonon-glass electron-crystal materials.

Compressed Modes for Variational Problems in Mathematics and Physics

This paper describes a general formalism for obtaining localized solutions to a class of problems in mathematical physics, which can be recast as variational optimization problems. This class includes the important cases of Schrödinger's equation in quantum mechanics and electromagnetic equations for light propagation in photonic crystals. These ideas can also be applied to develop a spatially localized basis that spans the eigenspace of a differential operator, for instance, the Laplace operator, generalizing the concept of plane waves to an orthogonal real-space basis with multi-resolution capabilities.

Crystal field and magnetic structure of UO$_{2}$

The properties of UO$_{2}$ result from rich $f$-electron physics, including electronic Coulomb interactions, spin-orbit and crystal field effects, as well as inter-ionic multipolar coupling. We present a comprehensive theoretical study of the electronic structure of UO$_{2}$ using a combined application of self-consistent DFT+$U$ calculations and a model Hamiltonian. The $Γ_{5}$ ground state of U$^{4+}$ and the energies of crystal field excitations $Γ_{5} \rightarrow Γ_{3,4,1}$ are reproduced in very good agreement with experiment. We also investigate competing non-collinear magnetic structures and confirm 3-k as the T=0 K ground state magnetic structure of UO$_2$.
