Spaces invariant under unitary representations of discrete groups

We investigate the structure of subspaces of a Hilbert space that are invariant under unitary representations of a discrete group. We work with square integrable representations, and we show that they are those for which we can construct an isometry intertwining the representation with the right regular representation, that we call a Helson map. We then characterize invariant subspaces using the Helson map, and provide general characterizations of Riesz and frame sequences of orbits. These results extend to the nonabelian setting several known results for abelian groups. They also extend to countable families of generators previous results obtained for principal subspaces.

An Approximation Problem in Multiplicatively Invariant Spaces

Let $\mathcal{H}$ be Hilbert space and $(Ω,μ)$ a $σ$-finite measure space. Multiplicatively invariant (MI) spaces are closed subspaces of $ L^2(Ω, \mathcal{H})$ that are invariant under point-wise multiplication by functions in a fix subset of $L^{\infty}(Ω).$ Given a finite set of data $\mathcal{F}\subseteq L^2(Ω, \mathcal{H}),$ in this paper we prove the existence and construct an MI space $M$ that best fits $\mathcal{F}$, in the least squares sense. MI spaces are related to shift invariant (SI) spaces via a fiberization map, which allows us to solve an approximation problem for SI spaces in the context of locally compact abelian groups. On the other hand, we introduce the notion of decomposable MI spaces (MI spaces that can be decomposed into an orthogonal sum of MI subspaces) and solve the approximation problem for the class of these spaces. Since SI spaces having extra invariance are in one-to-one relation to decomposable MI spaces, we also solve our approximation problem for this class of SI spaces. Finally we prove that translation invariant spaces are in correspondence with totally decomposable MI spaces.

Group Riesz and Frame Sequences: The Bracket and the Gramian

Given a discrete group and a unitary representation on a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$, we prove that the notions of operator Bracket map and Gramian coincide on a dense set of $\mathcal{H}$. As a consequence, combining this result with known frame theory, we can recover in a simple way all previous Bracket characterizations of Riesz and frame sequences generated by a single element under a unitary representation.

The Effect of Perturbations of Operator-Valued Frame Sequences and Fusion Frames on Their Duals

Fusion frames, and, more generally, operator-valued frame sequences are generalizations of classical frames, which are today a standard notion when redundant, yet stable sequences are required. However, the question of stability of duals with respect to perturbations has not been satisfactorily answered. In this paper, we quantitatively measure this stability by considering the associated deviations of the canonical and alternate dual sequences from the original ones. It is proven that operator-valued frame sequences are indeed stable in this sense. Along the way, we also generalize existing definitions for fusion frame duals to the infinite-dimensional situation and analyze how they perform with respect to a list of desiderata which, to our minds, a fusion frame dual should satisfy. Finally, we prove a similar stability result as above for fusion frames and their canonical duals.

Gabor fusion frames generated by difference sets

Collections of time- and frequency-shifts of suitably chosen generators (Alltop or random vectors) proved successful for many applications in sparse recovery and related fields. It was shown in \cite{xia2005achieving} that taking a characteristic function of a difference set as a generator, and considering only the frequency shifts, gives an equaingular tight frame for the subspace they span. In this paper, we investigate the system of all $N^2$ time- and frequency-shifts of a difference set in dimension $N$ via the mutual coherence, and compare numerically its sparse recovery effectiveness with Alltop and random generators. We further view this Gabor system as a fusion frame, show that it is optimally sparse, and moreover an equidistant tight fusion frame, i.e. it is an optimal Grassmannian packing.

Linear combinations of generators in multiplicatively invariant spaces

Multiplicatively invariant (MI) spaces are closed subspaces of $L^2(Ω,\mathcal{H})$ that are invariant under multiplications of (some) functions in $L^{\infty}(Ω)$. In this paper we work with MI spaces that are finitely generated. We prove that almost every linear combination of the generators of a finitely generated MI space produces a new set on generators for the same space and we give necessary and sufficient conditions on the linear combinations to preserve frame properties. We then apply what we prove for MI spaces to system of translates in the context of locally compact abelian groups and we obtain results that extend those previously proven for systems of integer translates in $L^2(\mathbb{R}^d)$.

Noncommutative Shift-Invariant Spaces

The structure of subspaces of a Hilbert space that are invariant under unitary representations of a discrete group is related to a notion of Hilbert modules endowed with inner products taking values in spaces of unbounded operators. A theory of reproducing systems in such modular structures is developed, providing a general framework that includes fundamental results of shift-invariant spaces. In particular, general characterizations of Riesz and frame sequences associated to group representations are provided, extending previous results for abelian groups and for cyclic subspaces of unitary representations of noncommutative discrete groups.

The Zak transform and the structure of spaces invariant by the action of an LCA group

We study closed subspaces of $L^2(X)$, where $(X, μ)$ is a $σ$-finite measure space, that are invariant under the unitary representation associated to a measurable action of a discrete countable LCA group $Γ$ on $X$. We provide a complete description for these spaces in terms of range functions and a suitable generalized Zak transform. As an application of our main result, we prove a characterization of frames and Riesz sequences in $L^2(X)$ generated by the action of the unitary representation under consideration on a countable set of functions in $L^2(X)$. Finally, closed subspaces of $L^2(G)$, for $G$ being an LCA group, that are invariant under translations by elements on a closed subgroup $Γ$ of $G$ are studied and characterized.

Linear combinations of frame generators in systems of translates

A finitely generated shift invariant space $V$ is a closed subspace of $L^2(\R^d)$ that is generated by the integer translates of a finite number of functions. A set of frame generators for $V$ is a set of functions whose integer translates form a frame for $V$. In this note we give necessary and sufficient conditions in order that a minimal set of frame generators can be obtained by taking linear combinations of the given frame generators. Surprisingly the results are very different to the recently studied case when the property to be a frame is not required.

Shift-modulation invariant spaces on LCA groups

A $(K,Λ)$ shift-modulation invariant space is a subspace of $L^2(G)$, that is invariant by translations along elements in $K$ and modulations by elements in $Λ$. Here $G$ is a locally compact abelian group, and $K$ and $Λ$ are closed subgroups of $G$ and the dual group $\hat G$, respectively. In this article we provide a characterization of shift-modulation invariant spaces in this general context when $K$ and $Λ$ are uniform lattices. This extends previous results known for $L^2(\R^d)$. We develop fiberization techniques and suitable range functions adapted to LCA groups needed to provide the desired characterization.

Invariance of a Shift-Invariant Space in Several Variables

In this article we study invariance properties of shift-invariant spaces in higher dimensions. We state and prove several necessary and sufficient conditions for a shift-invariant space to be invariant under a given closed subgroup of $\R^d$, and prove the existence of shift-invariant spaces that are exactly invariant for each given subgroup. As an application we relate the extra invariance to the size of support of the Fourier transform of the generators of the shift-invariant space. This work extends recent results obtained for the case of one variable to several variables.
