RANS Simulations of Turbulent Round Jets in the Presence of Density Difference and Comparison with High-Resolution Experimental Data

In this paper, the novel experimental data reported by Qin et al. [1] are used to assess the predictive capability of the Realizable k-epsilon (RKE) model and Reynolds stress transport (RST) model for buoyant jets and understand the reasons for discrepancies. In particular, we present the comparison between simulation results of a turbulent buoyant jet flow in the self-similar region with high-resolution experimental data obtained for a jet injected from a 2 mm nozzle into a 300x300x300 $mm^3$ tank, with nominal Reynolds number equal to 10,000. Results show that streamwise velocity profiles predicted by the RST model had good agreement with experimental data, while the larger spreading rate was predicted by the RKE model. For turbulent statistics, turbulent kinetic energy witnessed a discrepancy in the center region, with shear stress well predicted for both models. Comparison of the turbulent kinetic energy production term with experimental data revealed reasons for the discrepancy and also showed that the gradient of the streamwise velocity in the crosswise direction contributes the most to the turbulent kinetic energy production. Investigation of model coefficients of the turbulent dissipation equation for the RKE model has revealed that $C_{\varepsilon2}$ is critical in model accuracy.

Motivic decompositions of twisted flag varieties and representations of Hecke-type algebras

Let G be a split semisimple linear algebraic group over a field k0. Let E be a G-torsor over a field extension k of k0. Let h be an algebraic oriented cohomology theory in the sense of Levine-Morel. Consider a twisted form E/B of the variety of Borel subgroups G/B over k. Following the Kostant-Kumar results on equivariant cohomology of flag varieties we establish an isomorphism between the Grothendieck groups of the h-motivic subcategory generated by E/B and the category of finitely generated projective modules of certain Hecke-type algebra H which depends on the root datum of G, on the torsor E and on the formal group law of the theory h. In particular, taking h to be the Chow groups with finite coefficients Fp and E to be a generic G-torsor we prove that all indecomposable submodules of an affine nil-Hecke algebra H of G with coefficients in Fp are isomorphic to each other and correspond to the (non-graded) generalized Rost-Voevodsky motive for (G,p).

A rational construction of Lie algebras of type E_7

We give an explicit construction of Lie algebras of type $E_7$ out of a Lie algebra of type $D_6$ with some restrictions. Up to odd degree extensions, every Lie algebra of type $E_7$ arises this way. For Lie algebras that admit a $56$-dimensional representation we provide a more symmetric construction based on an observation of Manivel; the input is seven quaternion algebras subject to some relations.

A theory of baryon resonances at large N_c

At large number of colors, N_c quarks in baryons are in a mean field of definite space and flavor symmetry. We write down the general Lorentz and flavor structure of the mean field, and derive the Dirac equation for quarks in that field. The resulting baryon resonances exhibit an hierarchy of scales: The crude mass is O(N_c), the intrinsic quark excitations are O(1), and each intrinsic quark state entails a finite band of collective excitations that are split as O(1/N_c). We build a (new) theory of those collective excitations, where full dynamics is represented by only a few constants. In a limiting (but unrealistic) case when the mean field is spherically-and flavor-symmetric, our classification of resonances reduces to the SU(6) classification of the old non-relativistic quark model. Although in the real world N_c is only three, we obtain a good accordance with the observed resonance spectrum up to 2 GeV.

Effective Lagrangian for the Polyakov line on a lattice

We formulate a method for computing the effective Lagrangian of the Polyakov line on the lattice. Using mean field approximation we calculate the effective potential for high temperatures. The result agrees with recent lattice simulations. We reveal a new type of ultraviolet divergence (coming from longitudinal gluons) which dominates the effective potential and explains the discrepancy of the lattice simulations and standard perturbative calculations performed in covariant gauges.

Baryon resonances at large Nc, or Quark Nuclear Physics

We suggest a new point of view according to which baryon resonances can be understood as collective excitations about intrinsic one-quark excitations in a mean field of definite symmetry. This approach is justified in the limit of large number of colours Nc, and is similar to the physics of large-A nuclei, hence "quark nuclear physics". Although in the real world Nc is only three, we obtain a good agreement with the observed resonance spectrum of light baryons up to 2 GeV, and of lowest charmed baryon multiplets. A by-product of the scheme is the prediction of new exotic charmed (and bottom) baryons that may be stable against strong decays.

Rationally isotropic exceptional projective homogeneous varieties are locally isotropic

Assume that R is a local regular ring containing an infinite perfect field, or that R is the local ring of a point on a smooth scheme over an infinite field. Let K be the field of fractions of R and the characteristic of K is not 2. Let X be an exceptional projective homogeneous scheme over R. We prove that in most cases the condition that X has a K-point implies that X has an R-point.

Schubert calculus and singularity theory

Schubert calculus has been in the intersection of several fast developing areas of mathematics for a long time. Originally invented as the description of the cohomology of homogeneous spaces it has to be redesigned when applied to other generalized cohomology theories such as the equivariant, the quantum cohomology, K-theory, and cobordism. All this cohomology theories are different deformations of the ordinary cohomology. In this note we show that there is in some sense the universal deformation of Schubert calculus which produces the above mentioned by specialization of the appropriate parameters. We build on the work of Lerche Vafa and Warner. The main conjecture there was that the classical cohomology of a hermitian symmetric homogeneous manifold is a Jacobi ring of an appropriate potential. We extend this conjecture and provide a simple proof. Namely we show that the cohomology of the hermitian symmetric space is a Jacobi ring of a certain potential and the equivariant and the quantum cohomology and K-theory is a Jacobi ring of a particular deformation of this potential. This suggests to study the most general deformations of the Frobenius algebra of cohomology of these manifolds by considering the versal deformation of the appropriate potential. The structure of the Jacobi ring of such potential is a subject of well developed singularity theory. This gives a potentially new way to look at the classical, the equivariant, the quantum and other flavors of Schubert calculus.

Confinement and deconfinement for any gauge group from dyons viewpoint

Basing on a semiclassical picture of dyons, we present a nonperturbative model of a pure Yang--Mills theory at any temperatures, for an arbitrary simple gauge group. We argue that at low temperatures dyons drive the Yang--Mills system for all groups to a phase where the `eigenphases' of the Polyakov line are, as a vector, proportional to the Weyl vector being the half sum of positive roots. For most gauge groups it means confinement, in particular for `quarks' in any N-ality nonzero representation of the SU(N) gauge group. At a critical temperature there is a 1st order phase transition for all groups (except SU(2) where the transition is 2nd order), characterized by a jump of Polyakov lines, irrespectively of whether the gauge group has a nontrivial center, or not.

Invariants, torsion indices and oriented cohomology of complete flags

In the present notes we generalize the classical work of Demazure [Invariants symétriques entiers des groupes de Weyl et torsion] to arbitrary oriented cohomology theories and formal group laws. Let G be a split semisemiple linear algebraic group over a field and let T be its split maximal torus. We construct a generalized characteristic map relating the so called formal group ring of the character group of T with the cohomology of the variety of Borel subgroups of G. The main result of the paper says that the kernel of this map is generated by W-invariant elements, where W is the Weyl group of G. As one of the applications we provide an algorithm (realized as a Macaulau2 package) which can be used to compute the ring structure of an oriented cohomology (algebraic cobordism, Morava $K$-theories, connective K-theory, Chow groups, K_0, etc.) of a complete flag variety.

J-invariant of linear algebraic groups

Let G be a linear algebraic group over a field F and X be a projective homogeneous G-variety such that G splits over the function field of X. In the present paper we introduce an invariant of G called J-invariant which characterizes the motivic behaviour of X. This generalizes the respective notion invented by A. Vishik in the context of quadratic forms. As a main application we obtain a uniform proof of all known motivic decompositions of generically split projective homogeneous varieties (Severi-Brauer varieties, Pfister quadrics, maximal orthogonal Grassmannians, G2- and F4-varieties) as well as provide new examples (exceptional varieties of types E6, E7 and E8). We also discuss relations with torsion indices, canonical dimensions and cohomological invariants of the group G.

Statistical physics of dyons and quark confinement

We present a semiclassical approach to the SU(N) Yang--Mills theory whose partition function at nonzero temperatures is approximated by a saddle point -- an ensemble of an infinite number of interacting dyons of N kinds. The ensemble is governed by an exactly solvable 3d quantum field theory, allowing calculation of correlations functions relevant to confinement. We show that known criteria of confinement are satisfied in this semiclassical approximation: (i) the average Polyakov line is zero below some critical temperature, and nonzero above it, (ii) a quark-antiquark pair has linear rising potential energy, (iii) the average spatial Wilson loop falls off exponentially with the area, (iv) N^2 gluons are canceled out from the spectrum, (v) the critical deconfinement temperature is in good agreement with lattice data. Using the same approximation, we find confinement for the exceptional gauge group G(2) and a first-order deconfinement transition, also in agreement with lattice findings.

Estimate of the Theta+ width in the Relativistic Mean Field Approximation

In the Relativistic Mean Field Approximation three quarks in baryons from the lowest octet and the decuplet are bound by the self-consistent chiral field, and there are additional quark-antiquark pairs whose wave function also follows from the mean field. We present a generating functional for the 3-quark, 5-quark, 7-quark ... wave functions inside the octet, decuplet and antidecuplet baryons treated in a universal and compact way. The 3-quark components have the SU(6)-symmetric wave functions but with specific relativistic corrections which are generally not small. In particular, the normalization of the 5-quark component in the nucleon is about 50% of the 3-quark component. We give explicitly the 5-quark wave functions of the nucleon and of the exotic Theta+. We develop a formalism how to compute observables related to the 3- and 5-quark Fock components of baryons, and apply it to estimate the Theta+ width which turns out to be very small, 2-4 MeV, although with a large uncertainty.

Baryons as Fock states of 3,5,... quarks

We present a generating functional producing quark wave functions of all Fock states in the octet, decuplet and antidecuplet baryons in the mean field approximation, both in the rest and infinite momentum frames. In particular, for the usual octet and decuplet baryons we get the SU(6)-symmetric wave functions for their 3-quark component but with specific corrections from relativism and from additional quark-antiquark pairs. For the exotic antidecuplet baryons we obtain the 5-quark wave function.

Nucleons as chiral solitons

In the limit of large number of colors N the nucleon consisting of N quarks is heavy, and one can treat it semiclassically, like the large-Z Thomas--Fermi atom. The role of the semiclassical field binding the quarks in the nucleon is played by the pion or chiral field; its saddle-point distribution inside the nucleon is called the chiral soliton. The old Skyrme model for this soliton is an over-simplification. One can do far better by exploiting a realistic and theoretically-motivated effective chiral lagrangian presented in this paper. As a result one gets not only the static characteristics of the nucleon in a fair accordance with the experiment (such as masses, magnetic moments and formfactors) but also much more detailed dynamic characteristics like numerous parton distributions. We review the foundations of the Chiral Quark-Soliton Model of the nucleon as well as its recent applications to parton distributions, including the recently introduced `skewed' distributions, and to the nucleon wave function on the light cone.
