Complex structures on twisted Hilbert spaces

We investigate complex structures on twisted Hilbert spaces, with special attention paid to the Kalton-Peck $Z_2$ space and to the hyperplane problem. We consider (nontrivial) twisted Hilbert spaces generated by centralizers obtained from an interpolation scale of Köthe function spaces. We show there are always complex structures on the Hilbert space that cannot be extended to the twisted Hilbert space. If, however, the scale is formed by rearrangement invariant Köthe function spaces then there are complex structures on it that can be extended to a complex structure of the twisted Hilbert space. Regarding the hyperplane problem we show that no complex structure on $\ell_2$ can be extended to a complex structure on an hyperplane of $Z_2$ containing it.

Non-unitarisable representations and maximal symmetry

We investigate questions of maximal symmetry in Banach spaces and the structure of certain bounded non-unitarisable groups on Hilbert space. In particular, we provide structural information about bounded groups with an essentially unique invariant complemented subspace. This is subsequently combined with rigidity results for the unitary representation of ${\rm Aut}(T)$ on $\ell_2(T)$, where $T$ is the countably infinite regular tree, to describe the possible bounded subgroups of ${\rm GL}(\mathcal H)$ extending a well-known non-unitarisable representation of $\mathbb F_\infty$. As a related result, we also show that a transitive norm on a separable Banach space must be strictly convex.

Singular twisted sums generated by complex interpolation

We present new methods to obtain singular twisted sums $X\oplus_ΩX$ (i.e., exact sequences $0\to X\to X\oplus_ΩX \to X\to 0$ in which the quotient map is strictly singular), in which $X$ is the interpolation space arising from a complex interpolation scheme and $Ω$ is the induced centralizer. Although our methods are quite general, in our applications we are mainly concerned with the choice of $X$ as either a Hilbert space, or Ferenczi's uniformly convex Hereditarily Indecomposable space. In the first case, we construct new singular twisted Hilbert spaces, including the only known example so far: the Kalton-Peck space $Z_2$. In the second case we obtain the first example of an H.I. twisted sum of an H.I. space. We then use Rochberg's description of iterated twisted sums to show that there is a sequence $\mathcal F_n$ of H.I. spaces so that $\mathcal F_{m+n}$ is a singular twisted sum of $\mathcal F_m$ and $\mathcal F_n$, while for $l>n$ the direct sum $\mathcal F_n \oplus \mathcal F_{l+m}$ is a nontrivial twisted sum of $\mathcal F_l$ and $\mathcal F_{m+n}$. We also introduce and study the notion of disjoint singular twisted sum of Köthe function spaces and construct several examples involving reflexive $p$-convex Köthe function spaces, which include the function version of the Kalton-Peck space $Z_2$.

On Uniformly finitely extensible Banach spaces

We continue the study of Uniformly Finitely Extensible Banach spaces (in short, UFO) initiated in Moreno-Plichko, \emph{On automorphic Banach spaces}, Israel J. Math. 169 (2009) 29--45 and Castillo-Plichko, \emph{Banach spaces in various positions.} J. Funct. Anal. 259 (2010) 2098-2138. We show that they have the Uniform Approximation Property of Pełczyński and Rosenthal and are compactly extensible. We will also consider their connection with the automorphic space problem of Lindenstrauss and Rosenthal --do there exist automorphic spaces other than $c_0(I)$ and $\ell_2(I)$?-- showing that a space all whose subspaces are UFO must be automorphic when it is Hereditarily Indecomposable (HI), and a Hilbert space when it is either locally minimal or isomorphic to its square. We will finally show that most HI --among them, the super-reflexive HI space constructed by Ferenczi-- and asymptotically $\ell_2$ spaces in the literature cannot be automorphic.

Banach spaces without minimal subspaces

We prove three new dichotomies for Banach spaces à la W.T. Gowers' dichotomies. The three dichotomies characterise respectively the spaces having no minimal subspaces, having no subsequentially minimal basic sequences, and having no subspaces crudely finitely representable in all of their subspaces. We subsequently use these results to make progress on Gowers' program of classifying Banach spaces by finding characteristic spaces present in every space. Also, the results are used to embed any partial order of size $\aleph_1$ into the subspaces of any space without a minimal subspace ordered by isomorphic embeddability.

Banach spaces without minimal subspaces - examples

We analyse several examples of separable Banach spaces, some of them new, and relate them to several dichotomies obtained in the previous paper Banach spaces without minimal subspaces, by classifying them according to which side of the dichotomies they fall. This paper may be seen as a more empirical continuation of Banach spaces without minimal subspaces, in which our stress is on the study of examples for the new classes of Banach spaces considered in that work.

Displaying Polish groups on separable Banach spaces

A display of a topological group G on a Banach space X is a topological isomorphism of G with the isometry group Isom(X,||.||) for some equivalent norm ||.|| on X, where the latter group is equipped with the strong operator topology. Displays of Polish groups on separable real spaces are studied. It is proved that any closed subgroup of the infinite symmetric group S_\infty containing a non-trivial central involution admits a display on any of the classical spaces c0, C([0,1]), lp and Lp for 1 <=p <\infty. Also, for any Polsih group G, there exists a separable space X on which {-1,1} x G has a display.

The complexity of classifying separable Banach spaces up to isomorphism

It is proved that the relation of isomorphism between separable Banach spaces is a complete analytic equivalence relation, i.e., that any analytic equivalence relation Borel reduces to it. Thus, separable Banach spaces up to isomorphism provide complete invariants for a great number of mathematical structures up to their corresponding notion of isomorphism. The same is shown to hold for (1) complete separable metric spaces up to uniform homeomorphism, (2) separable Banach spaces up to Lipschitz isomorphism, and (3) up to (complemented) biembeddability, (4) Polish groups up to topological isomorphism, and (5) Schauder bases up to permutative equivalence. Some of the constructions rely on methods recently developed by S. Argyros and P. Dodos.

Ergodic Banach Spaces

We show that any Banach space contains a continuum of non isomorphic subspaces or a minimal subspace. We define an ergodic Banach space $X$ as a space such that $E_0$ Borel reduces to isomorphism on the set of subspaces of $X$, and show that every Banach space is either ergodic or contains a subspace with an unconditional basis $ which is complementably universal for the family of its block-subspaces. We also use our methods to get uniformity results; for example, in combination with a result of B. Maurey, V. Milman and N. Tomczak-Jaegermann, we show that an unconditional basis of a Banach space, of which every block-subspace is complemented, must be asymptotically $c_0$ or $l_p$.

Q.H.I. spaces

A Banach space $X$ is said to be Q.H.I. if eve\-ry infinite dimensional quo\-tient spa\-ce of $X$ is H.I.: that is, a space is Q.H.I. if the H.I. property is not only stable passing to subspaces, but also passing to quotients and to the dual. We show that Gowers-Maurey's space is Q.H.I.; then we provide an example of a reflexive H.I. space ${\cal X}$ whose dual is not H.I., from which it follows that $\cal X$ is not Q.H.I.

A uniformly convex hereditarily indecomposable Banach space

A {\em hereditarily indecomposable (or H.I.)} Banach space is an infinite dimensional Banach space such that no subspace can be written as the topological sum of two infinite dimensional subspaces. As an easy consequence, no such space can contain an unconditional basic sequence. This notion was first introduced in 1993 by T.Gowers and B.Maurey, who constructed the first known example of a hereditarily indecomposable space. Gowers-Maurey space is reflexive, however it is not uniformly convex. In this article, we provide an example of a uniformly convex hereditarily indecomposable space, using similar methods as Gowers and Maurey, and using the theory of complex interpolation for a family of Banach spaces of Coifman, Cwikel, Rochberg, Sagher and Weiss.
