Geometric Invariant Theory for principal three-dimensional subgroups acting on flag varieties

Let G be a semisimple complex Lie group. In this article, we study Geometric Invariant Theory on a flag variety G/B with respect to the action of a principal 3-dimensional simple subgroup S of G. We determine explicitly the GIT-equivalence classes of S-ample line bundles on G/B. We show that, under mild assumptions, among the GIT-classes there are chambers, in the sense of Dolgachev-Hu. The Hilbert quotients Y=X//S with respect to various chambers form a family of Mori dream spaces, canonically associated with G. We are able to determine three important cones in the Picard group of any of these quotients: the pseudo-effective, the movable and the nef cones.

On momentum images of representations and secant varieties

Let $K$ be a connected compact semisimple group and $V_λ$ be an irreducible unitary representation with highest weight $λ$. We study the momentum map $μ:\mathbb P(V_λ)\to\mathfrak k^*$. The intersection $μ(\mathbb P(V_λ))^+=μ(\mathbb P(V_λ))\cap{\mathfrak t}^+$ of the momentum image with a fixed Weyl chamber is a convex polytope called the momentum polytope of $V_λ$. We construct an affine rational polyhedral convex cone $Υ_λ$ with vertex $λ$, such that $μ(\mathbb P(V_λ))^+\subsetΥ_λ\cap {\mathfrak t}^+$. We show that equality holds for a class of representations, including those with regular highest weight. For those cases, we obtain a complete combinatorial description of the momentum polytope, in terms of $λ$. We also present some results on the critical points of $||μ||^2$. Namely, we consider the existence problem for critical points in the preimages of Kirwan's candidates for critical values. Also, we consider the secant varieties to the unique complex orbit $\mathbb X\subset\mathbb P(V_λ)$, and prove a relation between the momentum images of the secant varieties and the degrees of $K$-invariant polynomials on $V_λ$.

A link between Quantum Entanglement, Secant varieties and Sphericity

In this paper, we shed light on relations between three concepts studied in representations theory, algebraic geometry and quantum information theory. First - spherical actions of reductive groups on projective spaces. Second - secant varieties of homogeneous projective varieties, and the related notions of rank and border rank. Third - quantum entanglement. Our main result concerns the relation between the problem of the state reconstruction from its reduced one-particle density matrices and the minimal number of separable summands in its decomposition. More precisely, we show that sphericity implies that states of a given rank cannot be approximated by states of a lower rank. We call states for which such approximation is possible exceptional states. For three, important from quantum entanglement perspective cases of distinguishable, fermionic and bosonic particles, we also show that non-sphericity implies the existence of exceptional states. Remarkably, the exceptional states belong to non-bipartite entanglement classes. In particular, we show that the $W$-type states and their appropriate modifications are exceptional states stemming from the second secant variety for three cases above. We point out that the existence of the exceptional states is a physical obstruction for deciding the local unitary equivalence of states by means of the one-particle reduced density matrices. Finally, for a number of systems of distinguishable particles with known orbit structure we list all exceptional states and discuss their possible importance in entanglement theory.

Embeddings of semisimple complex Lie groups and cohomological components of modules

Let G --> G' be an embedding of semisimple complex Lie groups, let B and B' be a pair of nested Borel subgroups, and let f:G/B --> G'/B' be the associated equivariant embedding of flag manifolds. We study the pullbacks of cohomologies of invertible sheaves on G'/B' along the embedding f. Let O' be a G'-equivariant invertible sheaf on G'/B', and let O be its restriction to G/B. Consider the G-equivariant pullback on cohomology p : H(G'/B',O') --> H(G/B,O). The Borel-Weil-Bott theorem implies that the two cohomology spaces above are irreducible modules of G' and G respectively. By Schur's lemma, p is either surjective or zero. In this paper we establish a necessary and sufficient condition for nonvanishing of p, and apply it to the study of regular and diagonal embeddings. We also prove a structure theorem about the set of cohomological pairs of highest weights. We also study in detail two cases of embeddings which are neither regular nor diagonal. The first is the case of homogeneous rational curves in complete flag manifolds, and the second is the embedding of the complete flag manifold of G into the complete flag manifold of G'=SL(Lie(G)), via the adjoint representation of G. We show that the generators of the algebra of invariants in the polynomial algebra on Lie(G) can be realized as cohomological components. Our methods rely on Kostant's theory of Lie algebra cohomology.

Triangle groups, automorphic forms, and torus knots

This paper's theme is the relation between several classical and well-known objects: triangle Fuchsian groups, quasi-homogeneous singularities of plane curves, torus knot complements in the 3-sphere. Torus knots are the only nontrivial knots whose complements admit transitive Lie group actions. In fact S^3\K_{p,q} is diffeomorphic to a coset space of the universal covering group of PSL_2(R) with respect to a discrete subgroup G contained in the preimage of a (p,q,\infty)-triangle Fuchsian group. The existence of such a diffeomorphism between is known from a general topological classification of Seifert fibred 3-manifolds. Our goal is to construct an explicit diffeomorphism using automorphic forms. Such a construction is previously known for the trefoil knot K_{2,3} and in fact S^3\K_{2,3} = SL_2(R)/SL_2(Z). The connection between the two sides of the diffeomorphism comes via singularities of plane curves.
