Existence of a weak solution to a nonlinear fluid-structure interaction problem with heat exchange

In this paper, we study a nonlinear interaction problem between a thermoelastic shell and a heat-conducting fluid. The shell is governed by linear thermoelasticity equations and encompasses a time-dependent domain which is filled with a fluid governed by the full Navier-Stokes-Fourier system. The fluid and the shell are fully coupled, giving rise to a novel nonlinear moving boundary fluid-structure interaction problem involving heat exchange. The existence of a weak solution is obtained by combining three approximation techniques -- decoupling, penalization and domain extension. This approximation scheme allows us to use the methods already developed for fluids on moving domains, thus drastically simplifying the analysis at hand.

General Framework for Binary Classification on Top Samples

Many binary classification problems minimize misclassification above (or below) a threshold. We show that instances of ranking problems, accuracy at the top or hypothesis testing may be written in this form. We propose a general framework to handle these classes of problems and show which known methods (both known and newly proposed) fall into this framework. We provide a theoretical analysis of this framework and mention selected possible pitfalls the methods may encounter. We suggest several numerical improvements including the implicit derivative and stochastic gradient descent. We provide an extensive numerical study. Based both on the theoretical properties and numerical experiments, we conclude the paper by suggesting which method should be used in which situation.

On weak solutions to the problem of a rigid body with a cavity filled with a compressible fluid, and their asymptotic behavior

We prove the existence of a weak solution to the equations describing the inertial motions of a coupled system constituted by a rigid body containing a viscous compressible fluid. We then provide a weak-strong uniqueness result that allows us to completely characterize, under certain physical assumptions, the asymptotic behavior in time of the weak solution corresponding to smooth data of restricted "size" and show that it tends to a uniquely determined steady-state.

Dimension reduction for the full Navier-Stokes-Fourier system

It is well known that the full Navier-Stokes-Fourier system does not possess a strong solution in three dimensions which causes problems in applications. However, when modeling the flow of a fluid in a thin long pipe, the influence of the cross section can be neglected and the flow is basically one-dimensional. This allows us to deal with strong solutions which are more convenient for numerical computations. The goal of this paper is to provide a rigorous justification of this approach. Namely, we prove that any suitable weak solution to the three-dimensional NSF system tends to a strong solution to the one-dimensional system as the thickness of the pipe tends to zero.

Hölder continuity of velocity gradients for shear-thinning fluids under perfect slip boundary conditions

This paper is concerned with non-stationary flows of sheart-hinning fluids in a bounded two-dimensional C^{2;1} domain. Assuming perfect slip boundary conditions, we provide a proof of the existence of a solution with the Hölder continuous velocity gradients and pressure under condition that a stress tensor satisfies power-law with growth p\in[5/3; 2].

Inviscid limit for the compressible Euler system with non-local interactions

The collective behavior of animals can be modeled by a system of equations of continuum mechanics endowed with extra terms describing repulsive and attractive forces between the individuals. This system can be viewed as a generalization of the compressible Euler equations with all of its unpleasant consequences, e.g., the non-uniqueness of solutions. In this paper, we analyze the equations describing a viscous approximation of a generalized compressible Euler system and we show that its dissipative measure-valued solutions tend to a strong solution of the Euler system as viscosity tends to 0, provided that the strong solution exists.

On the low Mach number limit of compressible flows in exterior moving domains

We study the incompressible limit of solutions to the compressible barotropic Navier-Stokes system in the exterior of a bounded domain undergoing a simple translation. The problem is reformulated using a change of coordinates to fixed exterior domain. Using the spectral analysis of the wave propagator, the dispersion of acoustic waves is proved by the means of the RAGE theorem. The solution to the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations is identified as a limit.
