Dissipative solutions to a Beris-Edwards type model for compressible active nematic liquid crystals

We study the hydrodynamics of compressible active nematic liquid crystals in a three-dimensional and bounded domain, with a nonlinear viscosity tensor and nonhomogeneous boundary data, in a Landau-de Gennes framework. We prove the existence of dissipative solutions within a Beris-Edwards type model for active nematodynamics, which are weak solutions satisfying the underlying equations modulo a defect measure. The proof follows from a three level approximation scheme -- the Galerkin approximation, the classical parabolic regularization of the continuity equation, and the convex regularization of the potential generating the viscous stress. New techniques are required to deal with non-Newtonian stress tensor, larger classes of admissible pressure potentials and nonhomogeneous boundary conditions.

Existence of a weak solution to a nonlinear fluid-structure interaction problem with heat exchange

In this paper, we study a nonlinear interaction problem between a thermoelastic shell and a heat-conducting fluid. The shell is governed by linear thermoelasticity equations and encompasses a time-dependent domain which is filled with a fluid governed by the full Navier-Stokes-Fourier system. The fluid and the shell are fully coupled, giving rise to a novel nonlinear moving boundary fluid-structure interaction problem involving heat exchange. The existence of a weak solution is obtained by combining three approximation techniques -- decoupling, penalization and domain extension. This approximation scheme allows us to use the methods already developed for fluids on moving domains, thus drastically simplifying the analysis at hand.

On the velocity of a small rigid body in a viscous incompressible fluid in dimension two and three

In this paper we study the evolution of a small rigid body in a viscous incompressible fluid, in particular we show that a small particle is not accelerated by the fluid in the limit when its size converges to zero under a lower bound on its mass. This result is based on a new a priori estimate on the velocities of the centers of mass of rigid bodies that holds in the case when their masses are also allowed to decrease to zero.

Measure-valued solutions and weak-strong uniqueness for the incompressible inviscid fluid-rigid body interaction

We consider a coupled system of partial and ordinary differential equations describing the interaction between an isentropic inviscid fluid and a rigid body moving freely inside the fluid. We prove the existence of measure-valued solutions which is generated by the vanishing viscosity limit of incompressible fluid-rigid body interaction system under some physically constitutive relations. Moreover, we show that the measure-value solution coincides with strong solution on the interval of its existence. This relies on the weak-strong uniqueness analysis.

On weak solutions to the problem of a rigid body with a cavity filled with a compressible fluid, and their asymptotic behavior

We prove the existence of a weak solution to the equations describing the inertial motions of a coupled system constituted by a rigid body containing a viscous compressible fluid. We then provide a weak-strong uniqueness result that allows us to completely characterize, under certain physical assumptions, the asymptotic behavior in time of the weak solution corresponding to smooth data of restricted "size" and show that it tends to a uniquely determined steady-state.

Weak-strong uniqueness for compressible Navier-Stokes system with slip boundary conditions on time dependent domains

We consider the compressible Navier-Stokes system on time-dependent domains with prescribed motion of the boundary, supplemented with slip boundary conditions for the velocity. We derive the relative entropy inequality in the spirit of Feireisl et al. for the system on moving domain and use it to prove the weak-strong uniqueness property.

On the low Mach number limit of compressible flows in exterior moving domains

We study the incompressible limit of solutions to the compressible barotropic Navier-Stokes system in the exterior of a bounded domain undergoing a simple translation. The problem is reformulated using a change of coordinates to fixed exterior domain. Using the spectral analysis of the wave propagator, the dispersion of acoustic waves is proved by the means of the RAGE theorem. The solution to the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations is identified as a limit.
