Total absorption γγ-ray spectroscopy of the ββ decays of 96gs,m^{96\text{gs,m}}Y

The ββ decays of the ground state (gs) and isomeric state (m) of 96^{96}Y have been studied with the total absorption γγ-ray spectroscopy technique at the Ion Guide Isotope Separator On-Line facility. The separation of the 8+^{+} isomeric state from the 0−^{-} ground state was achieved thanks to the purification capabilities of the JYFLTRAP double Penning trap system. The ββ-intensity distributions of both decays have been independently determined. In the analyses the de-excitation of the 1581.6 keV level in 96^{96}Zr, in which conversion electron emission competes with pair production, has been carefully considered and found to have significant impact on the ββ-detector efficiency, influencing the ββ-intensity distribution obtained. Our results for 96gs^{96\text{gs}}Y (0+^+) confirm the large ground state to ground state ββ-intensity probability, although a slightly larger value than reported in previous studies was obtained, amounting to 96.6−2.1+0.3%96.6_{-2.1}^{+0.3}\% of the total ββ intensity. Given that the decay of 96gs^{96\text{gs}}Y is the second most important contributor to the reactor antineutrino spectrum between 5 and 7 MeV, the impact of the present results on reactor antineutrino summation calculations has been evaluated. In the decay of 96m^{96\text{m}}Y (8+^{+}), previously undetected ββ intensity in transitions to states above 6 MeV has been observed. This shows the importance of total absorption γγ-ray spectroscopy measurements of ββ decays with highly fragmented de-excitation patterns. 96m^{96\text{m}}Y (8+^{+}) is a major contributor to reactor decay heat in uranium-plutonium and thorium-uranium fuels around 10 s after fission pulses, and the newly measured average ββ and γγ energies differ significantly from the previous values in evaluated databases (...)

Decay studies of the long-lived states in 186^{186}Tl

Decay spectroscopy of the long-lived states in 186^{186}Tl has been performed at the ISOLDE Decay Station at ISOLDE, CERN. The αα decay from the low-spin (2−)(2^-) state in 186^{186}Tl was observed for the first time and a half-life of 3.4−0.4+0.53.4^{+0.5}_{-0.4} s was determined. Based on the αα-decay energy, the relative positions of the long-lived states were fixed, with the (2−)(2^-) state as the ground state, the 7(+)7^{(+)} state at 77(56)~keV and the 10(−)10^{(-)} state at 451(56) keV. The level scheme of the internal decay of the 186^{186}Tl(10(−)10^{(-)}) state (T1/2=3.40(9)T_{1/2} = 3.40(9) s), which was known to decay solely through emission of 374 keV γγ-ray transition, was extended and a lower-limit for the ββ-decay branching bβ>5.9(3)%b_β> 5.9(3)\% was determined. The extracted retardation factors for the γγ decay of the 10(−)10^{(-)} state were compared to the available data in neighboring odd-odd thallium isotopes indicating the importance of the πd3/2πd_{3/2} shell in the isomeric decay and significant structure differences between 184^{184}Tl and 186^{186}Tl.

Detailed spectroscopy of doubly magic 132^{132}Sn

The structure of the doubly magic 50132^{132}_{50}Sn82_{82} has been investigated at the ISOLDE facility at CERN, populated both by the β−β^-decay of 132^{132}In and β−β^--delayed neutron emission of 133^{133}In. The level scheme of 132^{132}Sn is greatly expanded with the addition of 68 γγ-transitions and 17 levels observed for the first time in the ββ decay. The information on the excited structure is completed by new γγ-transitions and states populated in the ββ-n decay of 133^{133}In. Improved delayed neutron emission probabilities are obtained both for 132^{132}In and 133^{133}In. Level lifetimes are measured via the Advanced Time-Delayed βγγβγγ(t) fast-timing method. An interpretation of the level structure is given based on the experimental findings and the particle-hole configurations arising from core excitations both from the \textit{N} = 82 and \textit{Z} = 50 shells, leading to positive and negative parity particle-hole multiplets. The experimental information provides new data to challenge the theoretical description of 132^{132}Sn.

Determination of Beta Decay Ground State Feeding of Nuclei of Importance for Reactor Applications

In ββ-decay studies the determination of the decay probability to the ground state of the daughter nucleus often suffers from large systematic errors. The difficulty of the measurement is related to the absence of associated delayed γγ-ray emission. In this work we revisit the 4πγ−β4πγ-β method proposed by Greenwood and collaborators in the 1990s, which has the potential to overcome some of the experimental difficulties. Our interest is driven by the need to determine accurately the ββ-intensity distributions of fission products that contribute significantly to the reactor decay heat and to the antineutrinos emitted by reactors. A number of such decays have large ground state branches. The method is relevant for nuclear structure studies as well. Pertinent formulae are revised and extended to the special case of ββ-delayed neutron emitters, and the robustness of the method is demonstrated with synthetic data. We apply it to a number of measured decays that serve as test cases and discuss the features of the method. Finally, we obtain ground state feeding intensities with reduced uncertainty for four relevant decays that will allow future improvements in antineutrino spectrum and decay heat calculations using the summation method.

Search for beta-delayed proton emission from 11^{11}Be

We report on an attempt to reproduce the observation of β−β^--delayed proton emission from 11^{11}Be through detection of the final state nucleus 10^{10}Be with accelerator mass spectrometry. Twelve samples were collected at the ISOLDE facility at CERN at different separator settings, allowing tests of different sources of contamination to be carried out. The observed amounts of 10^{10}Be per collected 11^{11}Be rule out several contamination sources, but do not agree internally. Formation of BeH molecular ions in the ion source may explain our data, in which case an upper limit of the ββp branching ratio of 2.2⋅10−62.2 \cdot 10^{-6} can be derived.

The mutable nature of particle-core excitations with spin in the one-valence-proton nucleus 133Sb

The gamma-ray decay of excited states of the one-valence-proton nucleus 133Sb has been studied using cold-neutron induced fission of 235U and 241Pu targets, during the EXILL campaign at the ILL reactor in Grenoble. By using a highly efficient HPGe array, coincidences between gamma-rays prompt with the fission event and those delayed up to several tens of microseconds were investigated, allowing to observe, for the first time, high-spin excited states above the 16.6 micros isomer. Lifetimes analysis, performed by fast-timing techniques with LaBr3(Ce) scintillators, reveals a difference of almost two orders of magnitude in B(M1) strength for transitions between positive-parity medium-spin yrast states. The data are interpreted by a newly developed microscopic model which takes into account couplings between core excitations (both collective and non-collective) of the doubly magic nucleus 132Sn and the valence proton, using the Skyrme effective interaction in a consistent way. The results point to a fast change in the nature of particle-core excitations with increasing spin.

Enhanced time response of 1-in. LaBr3(Ce) crystals by leading edge and constant fraction techniques

We have characterized in depth the time response of three detectors equipped with cylindrical LaBr3_{3} (Ce) crystals with dimensions of 1-in. in height and 1-in. in diameter, and having nominal Ce doping concentration of 5%, 8% and 10%. Measurements were performed at 60^{60}Co and 22^{22}Na γ-ray energies against a fast BaF2_{2} reference detector. The time resolution was optimized by the choice of the photomultiplier bias voltage and the fine tuning of the parameters of the constant fraction discriminator, namely the zero-crossing and the external delay. We report here on the optimal time resolution of the three crystals. It is observed that timing properties are influenced by the amount of Ce doping and the crystal homogeneity. For the crystal with 8% of Ce doping the use of the ORTEC 935 CFD at very shorts delays in addition to the Hamamatsu R9779 PMT has made it possible to improve the LaBr3_{3}(Ce) time resolution from the best literature value at 60Co photon energies to below 100 ps.
