Development of a High Intensity Neutron Source at the European Spallation Source: The HighNESS project

The European Spallation Source (ESS), presently under construction in Lund, Sweden, is a multidisciplinary international laboratory that will operate the world's most powerful pulsed neutron source. Supported by a 3M Euro Research and Innovation Action within the EU Horizon 2020 program, a design study (HighNESS) is now underway to develop a second neutron source below the spallation target. Compared to the first source, located above the spallation target and designed for high cold and thermal brightness, the new source will provide higher intensity, and a shift to longer wavelengths in the spectral regions of cold (2 /- 20 Å), very cold (VCN, 10 /- 120 Å), and ultra cold (UCN, > 500 Å) neutrons. The core of the second source will consist of a large liquid deuterium moderator to deliver a high flux of cold neutrons and to serve secondary VCN and UCN sources, for which different options are under study. The features of these new sources will boost several areas of condensed matter research and will provide unique opportunities in fundamental physics. Part of the HighNESS project is also dedicated to the development of future instruments that will make use of the new source and will complement the initial suite of instruments in construction at ESS. The HighNESS project started in October 2020. In this paper, the ongoing developments and the results obtained in the first year are described.

Measurements of the neutron absorption in supermirror coatings

In this work we report on measurements of neutron absorption in supermirror coatings. The measurements were carried out using the SuperADAM instrument at the Institut Laue-Langevin and by measuring the gamma-ray production from m = 3 and m = 4 neutron supermirrors when illuminated by a beam of neutrons. The results provide a valuable validation for recent computational and theoretical work that can be used as input to Monte-Carlo radiation transport calculations for the design of the shielding of neutron scattering instruments.

Development of High Intensity Neutron Source at the European Spallation Source

The European Spallation Source being constructed in Lund, Sweden will provide the user community with a neutron source of unprecedented brightness. By 2025, a suite of 15 instruments will be served by a high-brightness moderator system placed above the spallation target. The ESS infrastructure, consisting of the proton linac, the target station, and the instrument halls, allows for implementation of a second source below the spallation target. We propose to develop a second neutron source with a high-intensity moderator able to (1) deliver a larger total cold neutron flux, (2) provide high intensities at longer wavelengths in the spectral regions of Cold (4-10 Å), Very Cold (10-40 Å), and Ultra Cold (several 100 Å) neutrons, as opposed to Thermal and Cold neutrons delivered by the top moderator. Offering both unprecedented brilliance, flux, and spectral range in a single facility, this upgrade will make ESS the most versatile neutron source in the world and will further strengthen the leadership of Europe in neutron science. The new source will boost several areas of condensed matter research such as imaging and spin-echo, and will provide outstanding opportunities in fundamental physics investigations of the laws of nature at a precision unattainable anywhere else. At the heart of the proposed system is a volumetric liquid deuterium moderator. Based on proven technology, its performance will be optimized in a detailed engineering study. This moderator will be complemented by secondary sources to provide intense beams of Very- and Ultra-Cold Neutrons.

Measurements of the Absolute Branching Fractions of B±→K±XccˉB^\pm \to K^\pm X_{c\bar c}

A study of the two body decays B±→XccˉK±B^\pm\rightarrow X_{c\bar c}K^\pm, where Xccˉ_{c\bar c} refers to one charmonium state, is reported by BaBar collaboration using a data sample of 424 fb−1^{-1}. The absolute determination of branching fractions for these decays are significantly improved compared to previous BaBaR measurements. Evidence is found for the decay B+→X(3872)K+B^+\rightarrow X(3872)K^+ at the 3σ3σ level. The absolute branching fraction B(B+→X(3872)K+)=(2.1±0.6(stat)±0.3(syst))×10−4{\cal B}(B^+\rightarrow X(3872)K^+) = (2.1\pm0.6({\rm stat})\pm0.3({\rm syst}))\times 10^{-4} is measured for the first time. It follows that B(X(3872)→J/ψπ+π−)=(4.1±1.3)%{\cal B}(X(3872)\rightarrow J/ψπ^+π^-)=(4.1\pm1.3)\%, supporting the hypothesis of a molecular component for this resonance.

Precision measurement of the B(Υ(3S)→τ+τ−)/B(Υ(3S)→μ+μ−){\cal B}(Υ(3S)\toτ^+τ^-)/{\cal B}(Υ(3S)\toμ^+μ^-) ratio

We report on a precision measurement of the ratio RτμΥ(3S)=B(Υ(3S)→τ+τ−)/B(Υ(3S)→μ+μ−){\cal R}_{τμ}^{Υ(3S)} = {\cal B}(Υ(3S)\toτ^+τ^-)/{\cal B}(Υ(3S)\toμ^+μ^-) using data collected with the BaBar detector at the SLAC PEP-II e+e−e^+e^- collider. The measurement is based on a 28 fb−1^{-1} data sample collected at a center-of-mass energy of 10.355 GeV corresponding to a sample of 122 million Υ(3S)Υ(3S) mesons. The ratio is measured to be RτμΥ(3S)=0.966±0.008stat±0.014syst{\cal R}_{τμ}^{Υ(3S)} = 0.966 \pm 0.008_\mathrm{stat} \pm 0.014_\mathrm{syst} and is in agreement with the Standard Model prediction of 0.9948 within 2 standard deviations. The uncertainty in RτμΥ(3S){\cal R}_{τμ}^{Υ(3S)} is almost an order of magnitude smaller than the only previous measurement.

Search for lepton-flavor violating decays D0→X0e±μ∓D^{0}\rightarrow X^{0}e^{\pm}μ^{\mp}

We present a search for seven lepton-flavor-violating neutral charm decays of the type D0→X0e±μ∓D^{0}\rightarrow X^{0} e^{\pm} μ^{\mp}, where X0X^{0} represents a π0π^{0}, KS0K^{0}_{\rm S}, K∗0ˉ\bar{K^{*0}}, ρ0ρ^{0}, ϕϕ, ωω, or ηη meson. The analysis is based on 468468 fb−1^{-1} of e+e−e^+e^- annihilation data collected at or close to the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) resonance with the BaBar detector at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. No significant signals are observed, and we establish 90\% confidence level upper limits on the branching fractions in the range (5.0−22.5)×10−7(5.0 - 22.5)\times 10^{-7}. The limits are between one and two orders of magnitude more stringent than previous measurements.

Search for rare or forbidden decays of the D0D^{0} meson

We present a search for nine lepton-number-violating and three lepton-flavor-violating neutral charm decays of the type D0→h′−h−ℓ′+ℓ+D^0\rightarrow h^{\prime -} h^{-}\ell^{\prime +} \ell^{+} and D0→h′−h+ℓ′±ℓ∓D^0\rightarrow h^{\prime -} h^{+}\ell^{\prime\pm} \ell^{\mp}, where hh and h′h^{\prime} represent a KK or ππ meson and ℓ\ell and ℓ′\ell^{\prime} an electron or muon. The analysis is based on 468468 fb−1^{-1} of e+e−e^+e^- annihilation data collected at or close to the Y(4S)Y(4S) resonance with the BaBar detector at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. No significant signal is observed for any of the twelve modes and we establish 90% confidence level upper limits on the branching fractions in the range (1.0−30.6)×10−7(1.0 - 30.6)\times 10^{-7}. The limits are between one and three orders of magnitude times more stringent than previous measurements.

Measurement of azimuthal asymmetries in inclusive charged dipion production in e+e−e^+e^- annihilations at s\sqrt{s} = 3.65 GeV

We present a measurement of the azimuthal asymmetries of two charged pions in the inclusive process e+e−→ππXe^+e^-\rightarrow ππX based on a data set of 62 pb−1\rm{pb}^{-1} at the center-of-mass energy s=3.65\sqrt{s}=3.65 GeV collected with the BESIII detector. These asymmetries can be attributed to the Collins fragmentation function. We observe a nonzero asymmetry, which increases with increasing pion momentum. As our energy scale is close to that of the existing semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering experimental data, the measured asymmetries are important inputs for the global analysis of extracting the quark transversity distribution inside the nucleon and are valuable to explore the energy evolution of the spin-dependent fragmentation function.

Measurement of the Ds+→ℓ+νℓD_s^+ \to \ell^+ν_\ell branching fractions and the decay constant fDs+f_{D_s^+}

Using 482~pb−1^{-1} of e+e−e^+e^- collision data collected at a center-of-mass energy of s=4.009\sqrt{s} = 4.009 GeV with the BESIII detector, we measure the branching fractions of the decays Ds+→μ+νμD_s^+\toμ^+ν_μ and Ds+→τ+ντD_s^+\toτ^+ν_τ. By constraining the ratio of decay rates of Ds+D_s^+ to τ+νττ^+ν_τ and to μ+νμμ^+ν_μ to the Standard Model prediction, the branching fractions are determined to be B(Ds+→μ+νμ)=(0.495±0.067±0.026)%\mathcal{B}(D_s^+ \to μ^+ν_μ) = (0.495 \pm 0.067 \pm 0.026)\% and B(Ds+→τ+ντ)=(4.83±0.65±0.26)%\mathcal{B}(D_s^+ \to τ^+ν_τ) = (4.83 \pm 0.65 \pm 0.26)\%. Using these branching fractions, we obtain a value for the decay constant fDs+f_{D_s^+} of (241.0±16.3±6.5) MeV(241.0 \pm 16.3 \pm 6.5)~\text{MeV}, where the first error is statistical and the second systematic.

Measurement of the leptonic decay width of J/ψJ/ψ using initial state radiation

Using a data set of 2.93 fb−1^{-1} taken at a center-of-mass energy of s\sqrt{s} = 3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, we measure the process e+e−→J/ψγ→μ+μ−γe^+e^-\rightarrow J/ψγ\rightarrow μ^+μ^-γ and determine the product of the branching fraction and the electronic width Bμμ⋅Γee=(333.4±2.5stat±4.4sys)\mathcal B_{μμ}\cdot Γ_{ee} = (333.4 \pm 2.5_{\rm stat} \pm 4.4_{\rm sys})~eV. Using the earlier-published BESIII result for Bμμ\mathcal B_{μμ} = (5.973 ±\pm 0.007stat_{\rm stat} ±\pm 0.037sys_{\rm sys})\%, we derive the J/ψJ/ψ electronic width ΓeeΓ_{ee}~= (5.58 ±\pm 0.05stat_{\rm stat} ±\pm 0.08sys_{\rm sys}) keV.

Measurements of absolute hadronic branching fractions of Λc+Λ_{c}^{+} baryon

Using 567pb−1567\rm{pb}^{-1} of e+e−e^+e^- collisions recorded at s=4.599GeV\sqrt{s}=4.599\rm{GeV} with the BESIII detector, we report first measurements of absolute hadronic branching fractions of Cabibbo-favored decays of the Λc+Λ_{c}^{+} baryon with a double-tag technique. A global least-square fitter is utilized to improve the measured precision. Among the measurements for twelve Λc+Λ_{c}^{+} decay modes, the branching fraction for Λc+→pK−π+Λ_{c}^{+} \rightarrow pK^-π^+ is determined to be (5.84±0.27±0.23)%(5.84\pm0.27\pm0.23)\%, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. In addition, the measurements of the branching fractions of the other eleven Cabbibo-favored hadronic decay modes are significantly improved.

Observation of e+e−→ωχc1,2e^+e^- \rightarrow ωχ_{c1,2} near s\sqrt{s} = 4.42 and 4.6 GeV

Based on data samples collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII storage ring at center-of-mass energies s>\sqrt{s} > 4.4 GeV, the processes e+e−→ωχc1,2e^+e^- \rightarrow ωχ_{c1,2} are observed for the first time. With an integrated luminosity of 1074pb−11074 pb^{-1} near s=\sqrt{s} = 4.42 GeV, a significant ωχc2ωχ_{c2} signal is found, and the cross section is measured to be $(20.9 \pm 3.2 \pm 2.5)\pb$. With 567pb−1567 pb^{-1} near s=\sqrt{s} = 4.6 GeV, a clear ωχc1ωχ_{c1} signal is seen, and the cross section is measured to be $(9.5 \pm 2.1 \pm 1.3) \pb$, while evidence is found for an ωχc2ωχ_{c2} signal. The first errors are statistical and the second are systematic. Due to low luminosity or low cross section at other energies, no significant signals are observed. In the ωχc2ωχ_{c2} cross section, an enhancement is seen around s=\sqrt{s} = 4.42 GeV. Fitting the cross section with a coherent sum of the ψ(4415)ψ(4415) Breit-Wigner function and a phase space term, the branching fraction B(ψ(4415)→ωχc2)\mathcal{B}(ψ(4415)\toωχ_{c2}) is obtained to be of the order of 10−310^{-3}.

Observation of pseudoscalar and tensor resonances in J/ψ→γϕϕJ/ψ\rightarrow γϕϕ

Based on a sample of (1310.6±10.5)×106(1310.6 \pm 10.5) \times 10^{6} J/ψJ/ψ events collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII storage ring, a partial wave analysis of the decay J/ψ→γϕϕJ/ψ\rightarrow γϕϕ is performed in order to study the intermediate states. Results of the partial wave analysis show that the structures are predominantly 0−+0^{-+} states. The existence of the η(2225)η(2225) is confirmed, and its resonance parameters are measured. Two additional pseudoscalar states, the η(2100)η(2100) with a mass of 2050−24+30−26+752050_{-24}^{+30}{}_{-26}^{+75}~MeV/c2c^{2} and a width of 250−30+36−164+181250_{-30}^{+36}{}_{-164}^{+181}~MeV/c2c^{2} and the X(2500)X(2500) with a mass of 2470−19+15−23+1012470_{-19}^{+15}{}_{-23}^{+101}~MeV/c2c^{2} and a width of 230−35+64−33+56230_{-35}^{+64}{}_{-33}^{+56}~MeV/c2c^{2}, are observed. In addition to these three pseudoscalar states, the scalar state f0(2100)f_0(2100), and three tensor states, the f2(2010)f_2(2010), f2(2300)f_2(2300) and f2(2340)f_2(2340), are observed in the process J/ψ→γϕϕJ/ψ\rightarrow γϕϕ. The product branching fractions B{\cal B}(J/ψ→γX)×B(X→ϕϕ)J/ψ\rightarrow γX)\times{\cal B}(X\rightarrow ϕϕ) are reported.

Search for the weak decay η′→K±π∓η^{\prime}\to K^{\pm}π^{\mp} and precise measurement of the branching fraction B(J/ψ→ϕη′){\cal B}(J/ψ\toϕη^{\prime})

We present the first search for the rare decay of η′η^\prime into K±π∓K^{\pm}π^{\mp} in J/ψ→ϕη′J/ψ\toϕη^{\prime}, using a sample of 1.3×1091.3\times10^{9} J/ψJ/ψ events collected with the BESIII detector. No significant signal is observed, and the upper limit at the 90\% confidence level for the ratio B(η′→K±π∓)B(η′→γπ+π−)\frac{{\cal B}(η^{\prime}\to K^{\pm}π^{\mp})}{{\cal B}(η^{\prime}\toγπ^{+}π^{-})} is determined to be 1.3×10−41.3\times10^{-4}. In addition, we report the measurement of the branching fraction of J/ψ→ϕη′J/ψ\toϕη^{\prime} to be (5.10±0.03(stat.)±0.32(syst.))×10−4(5.10\pm0.03(\text{stat.})\pm0.32(\text{syst.}))\times10^{-4}, which agrees with previous results from BESII.

Study of D+→K−π+e+νeD^{+} \to K^{-} π^+ e^+ ν_e

We present an analysis of the decay D+→K−π+e+νeD^{+} \to K^{-} π^+ e^+ ν_e based on data collected by the BESIII experiment at the ψ(3770)ψ(3770) resonance. Using a nearly background-free sample of 18262 events, we measure the branching fraction B(D+→K−π+e+νe)=(3.71±0.03±0.08)%\mathcal{B}(D^{+} \to K^{-} π^+ e^+ ν_e) = (3.71 \pm 0.03 \pm 0.08)\%. For 0.8<mKπ<1.00.8<m_{Kπ}<1.0 GeV/c2c^{2} the partial branching fraction is B(D+→K−π+e+νe)[0.8,1]=(3.33±0.03±0.07)%\mathcal{B}(D^{+} \to K^{-} π^+ e^+ ν_e)_{[0.8,1]} = (3.33 \pm 0.03 \pm 0.07)\%. A partial wave analysis shows that the dominant Kˉ∗(892)0\bar K^{*}(892)^{0} component is accompanied by an \emph{S}-wave contribution accounting for (6.05±0.22±0.18)%(6.05\pm0.22\pm0.18)\% of the total rate and that other components are negligible. The parameters of the Kˉ∗(892)0\bar K^{*}(892)^{0} resonance and of the form factors based on the spectroscopic pole dominance predictions are also measured. We also present a measurement of the Kˉ∗(892)0\bar K^{*}(892)^{0} helicity basis form factors in a model-independent way.

Study of J/ψ→ppˉϕJ/ψ\to p\bar{p}ϕ at BESIII

Using a data sample of 1.31×1091.31 \times 10^{9} J/ψJ/ψ events accumulated with the BESIII detector, the decay J/ψ→ppˉϕJ/ψ\to p\bar{p}ϕ is studied via two decay modes, ϕ→KS0KL0ϕ\to K^{0}_{S}K^{0}_{L} and ϕ→K+K−ϕ\to K^{+}K^{-}. The branching fraction of J/ψ→ppˉϕJ/ψ\to p\bar{p}ϕ is measured to be $\mathcal{B}(J/ψ\to p\bar{p}ϕ)=[5.23\pm0.06(\mbox{stat})\pm0.33(\mbox{syst})]\times10^{-5}$, which agrees well with a previously published measurement, but with a significantly improved precision. No evident enhancement near the ppˉp\bar{p} mass threshold, denoted as X(ppˉ)X(p\bar{p}), is observed, and the upper limit on the branching fraction of J/ψ→X(ppˉ)ϕ→ppˉϕJ/ψ\to X(p\bar{p})ϕ\to p\bar{p}ϕ is determined to be B(J/ψ→X(ppˉ)ϕ→ppˉϕ)<2.1×10−7\mathcal{B}(J/ψ\to X(p\bar{p})ϕ\to p\bar{p}ϕ)<2.1\times10^{-7} at the 90\% confidence level.

An amplitude analysis of the π0π0π^{0}π^{0} system produced in radiative J/ψJ/ψ decays

An amplitude analysis of the π0π0π^{0}π^{0} system produced in radiative J/ψJ/ψ decays is presented. In particular, a piecewise function that describes the dynamics of the π0π0π^{0}π^{0} system is determined as a function of Mπ0π0M_{π^{0}π^{0}} from an analysis of the (1.311±0.011)×109(1.311\pm0.011)\times10^{9} J/ψJ/ψ decays collected by the BESIII detector. The goal of this analysis is to provide a description of the scalar and tensor components of the π0π0π^0π^0 system while making minimal assumptions about the properties or number of poles in the amplitude. Such a model-independent description allows one to integrate these results with other related results from complementary reactions in the development of phenomenological models, which can then be used to directly fit experimental data to obtain parameters of interest. The branching fraction of J/ψ→γπ0π0J/ψ\to γπ^{0}π^{0} is determined to be (1.15±0.05)×10−3(1.15\pm0.05)\times10^{-3}, where the uncertainty is systematic only and the statistical uncertainty is negligible.

Confirmation of a charged charmoniumlike state Zc(3885)∓Z_c(3885)^{\mp} in e+e−→π±(DDˉ∗)∓e^+e^-\toπ^{\pm}(D\bar{D}^*)^\mp with double DD tag

We present a study of the process e+e−→π±(DDˉ∗)∓e^+e^-\toπ^{\pm}(D\bar{D}^*)^{\mp} using data samples of 1092~pb−1^{-1} at s=4.23\sqrt{s}=4.23~GeV and 826~pb−1^{-1} at s=4.26\sqrt{s}=4.26~GeV collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII storage ring. With full reconstruction of the DD meson pair and the bachelor π±π^{\pm} in the final state, we confirm the existence of the charged structure Zc(3885)∓Z_c(3885)^{\mp} in the (DDˉ∗)∓(D\bar{D}^*)^{\mp} system in the two isospin processes e+e−→π+D0D∗−e^+e^-\toπ^+D^0D^{*-} and e+e−→π+D−D∗0e^+e^-\toπ^+D^-D^{*0}. By performing a simultaneous fit, the statistical significance of Zc(3885)∓Zc(3885)^{\mp} signal is determined to be greater than 10σσ, and its pole mass and width are measured to be MpoleM_{\rm{pole}}=(3881.7±\pm1.6(stat.)±\pm1.6(syst.))~MeV/c2c^2 and ΓpoleΓ_{\rm{pole}}=(26.6±\pm2.0(stat.)±\pm2.1(syst.))~MeV, respectively. First Observation of CP Violation in B0->D(*)CP h0 Decays by a Combined Time-Dependent Analysis of BaBar and Belle Data

We report a measurement of the time-dependent CP asymmetry of B0->D(*)CP h0 decays, where the light neutral hadron h0 is a pi0, eta or omega meson, and the neutral D meson is reconstructed in the CP eigenstates K+ K-, K0S pi0 or K0S omega. The measurement is performed combining the final data samples collected at the Y(4S) resonance by the BaBar and Belle experiments at the asymmetric-energy B factories PEP-II at SLAC and KEKB at KEK, respectively. The data samples contain ( 471 +/- 3 ) x 10^6 BB pairs recorded by the BaBar detector and ( 772 +/- 11 ) x 10^6, BB pairs recorded by the Belle detector. We measure the CP asymmetry parameters -eta_f S = +0.66 +/- 0.10 (stat.) +/- 0.06 (syst.) and C = -0.02 +/- 0.07 (stat.) +/- 0.03 (syst.). These results correspond to the first observation of CP violation in B0->D(*)CP h0 decays. The hypothesis of no mixing-induced CP violation is excluded in these decays at the level of 5.4 standard deviations.

In-Beam Background Suppression Shield

The long (3ms) proton pulse of the European Spallation Source (ESS) gives rise to unique and potentially high backgrounds for the instrument suite. In such a source an instrument capabilities will be limited by it's Signal to Noise (S/N) ratio. The instruments with a direct view of the moderator, which do not use a bender to help mitigate the fast neutron background, are the most challenging. For these beam lines we propose the innovative shielding of placing blocks of material directly into the guide system, which allow a minimum attenuation of the cold and thermal fluxes relative to the background suppression. This shielding configuration has been worked into a beam line model using Geant4. We study particularly the advantages of single crystal sapphire and silicon blocks .

The measured branching fraction of ψ(3770)→γχc1ψ(3770) \rightarrow γχ_{c1} is B(ψ(3770)→γχc1)=(2.48±0.15±0.23)×10−3\mathcal B(ψ(3770) \rightarrow γχ_{c1})=(2.48 \pm 0.15 \pm 0.23) \times 10^{-3}, which is the most precise measurement to date. The upper limit on the branching fraction of ψ(3770)→γχc2ψ(3770)\rightarrow γχ_{c2} at a 90%90\% confidence level is B(ψ(3770)→γχc2)<0.64×10−3\mathcal B(ψ(3770) \rightarrow γχ_{c2})<0.64 \times 10^{-3}. The corresponding partial widths are Γ(ψ(3770)→γχc1)=(67.5±4.1±6.7)Γ(ψ(3770) \to γχ_{c1}) =(67.5\pm 4.1\pm 6.7)~keV and Γ(ψ(3770)→γχc2)<17.4Γ(ψ(3770) \to γχ_{c2}) < 17.4~keV.

Measurement of yCPy_{CP} in D0−D‾0D^0-\overline{D}^0 oscillation using quantum correlations in e+e−→D0D‾0e^+e^-\to D^0\overline{D}^0 at s\sqrt{s} = 3.773\,GeV

We report a measurement of the parameter yCPy_{CP} in $\ensuremath{D^0}\xspace-\ensuremath{\overline{D}^{0}}\xspace$ oscillations performed by taking advantage of quantum coherence between pairs of $\ensuremath{D^0}\xspace \ensuremath{\overline{D}^{0}}\xspace$ mesons produced in e+e−e^+e^- annihilations near threshold. In this work, doubly-tagged $\ensuremath{D^0}\xspace \ensuremath{\overline{D}^{0}}\xspace$ events, where one DD decays to a CPCP eigenstate and the other DD decays in a semileptonic mode, are reconstructed using a data sample of 2.92\,fb−1^{-1} collected with the BESIII detector at the center-of-mass energy of s\sqrt{s} = 3.773\,GeV. We obtain yCP=(−2.0±1.3±0.7)%y_{CP} = (-2.0\pm1.3\pm0.7)\%, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. This result is compatible with the current world average.

Measurement of the e+e−→π+π−\mathrm e^+\mathrm e^-\rightarrow\mathrmπ^+\mathrmπ^- Cross Section between 600 and 900 MeV Using Initial State Radiation

We extract the e+e−→π+π−e^+e^-\rightarrow π^+π^- cross section in the energy range between 600 and 900 MeV, exploiting the method of initial state radiation. A data set with an integrated luminosity of 2.93 fb−1^{-1} taken at a center-of-mass energy of 3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider is used. The cross section is measured with a systematic uncertainty of 0.9%. We extract the pion form factor ∣Fπ∣2|F_π|^2 as well as the contribution of the measured cross section to the leading order hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to (g−2)μ(g-2)_μ. We find this value to be aμππ,LO(600−900  MeV)=(368.2±2.5stat±3.3sys)⋅10−10a_μ^{ππ,\rm LO}(600-900\;\rm MeV) = (368.2 \pm 2.5_{\rm stat} \pm 3.3_{\rm sys})\cdot 10^{-10}.

Using data samples collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII collider at center-of-mass energies from 3.810 to 4.600 GeV, we perform a study of e+e−→ηJ/ψe^{+}e^{-} \to ηJ/ψ and π0J/ψπ^0 J/ψ. Statistically significant signals of e+e−→ηJ/ψe^{+}e^{-} \to ηJ/ψ are observed at s\sqrt{s} = 4.190, 4.210, 4.220, 4.230, 4.245, 4.260, 4.360 and 4.420 GeV, while no signals of e+e−→π0J/ψe^{+}e^{-} \to π^{0} J/ψ are observed. The measured energy-dependent Born cross section for e+e−→ηJ/ψe^{+}e^{-} \to ηJ/ψ shows an enhancement around 4.2~GeV. The measurement is compatible with an earlier measurement by Belle, but with a significantly improved precision.

Measurement of the branching fractions of Ds+→η′XD_{s}^{+}\rightarrow η'X and Ds+→η′ρ+D_{s}^{+}\rightarrow η'ρ^{+} in e+e−→Ds+Ds−e^+e^-\to D^+_{s}D^-_{s}

We study Ds+D_{s}^{+} decays to final states involving the η′η' with a 482 \,pb−1^{-1} data sample collected at s\sqrt{s} = 4.009 \,GeV with the \mbox{BESIII} detector at the BEPCII collider. We measure the branching fractions B(Ds+→η′X)\mathcal{B}(D^+_{s}\rightarrow η'X) = (8.8±\pm1.8±\pm0.5)%\% and B(Ds+→η′ρ+)\mathcal{B}(D_{s}^{+}\rightarrow η'ρ^{+}) = (5.8±1.4±0.45.8\pm1.4\pm0.4)%\% where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. In addition, we estimate an upper limit on the non-resonant branching ratio B(Ds+→η′π+π0)<5.1%\mathcal{B}(D_{s}^{+}\rightarrow η'π^+π^0)<5.1\% at the 90%\% confidence level. Our results are consistent with CLEO's recent measurements and help to resolve the disagreement between the theoretical prediction and CLEO's previous measurement of B(Ds+→η′ρ+)\mathcal{B}(D_{s}^{+}\rightarrow η'ρ^{+}).

Measurement of the Matrix Elements for the Decays η→π+π−π0η\rightarrow π^{+}π^{-}π^0 and η/η′→π0π0π0η/η^{\prime}\rightarrowπ^0π^0π^0

The measured matrix elements of η→π+π−π0η\rightarrowπ^+π^-π^0 are in reasonable agreement with previous measurements. The Dalitz plot slope parameters of η→π0π0π0η\rightarrowπ^0π^0π^0 and η′→π0π0π0η^{\prime}\rightarrowπ^0π^0π^0 are determined to be −0.055±0.014±0.004-0.055 \pm 0.014 \pm 0.004 and −0.640±0.046±0.047-0.640 \pm 0.046 \pm 0.047, respectively, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. Both values are consistent with previous measurements, while the precision of the latter one is improved by a factor of three. Measurement of the proton form factor by studying e+e−→ppˉe^{+} e^{-}\rightarrow p\bar{p}

Using data samples collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, we measure the Born cross section of e+e−→ppˉe^{+}e^{-}\rightarrow p\bar{p} at 12 center-of-mass energies from 2232.4 to 3671.0 MeV. The corresponding effective electromagnetic form factor of the proton is deduced under the assumption that the electric and magnetic form factors are equal (∣GE∣=∣GM∣)(|G_{E}|= |G_{M}|). In addition, the ratio of electric to magnetic form factors, ∣GE/GM∣|G_{E}/G_{M}|, and ∣GM∣|G_{M}| are extracted by fitting the polar angle distribution of the proton for the data samples with larger statistics, namely at s=\sqrt{s}= 2232.4 and 2400.0 MeV and a combined sample at s\sqrt{s} = 3050.0, 3060.0 and 3080.0 MeV, respectively. The measured cross sections are in agreement with recent results from BaBar, improving the overall uncertainty by about 30\%. The ∣GE/GM∣|G_{E}/G_{M}| ratios are close to unity and consistent with BaBar results in the same q2q^{2} region, which indicates the data are consistent with the assumption that ∣GE∣=∣GM∣|G_{E}|=|G_{M}| within uncertainties.

Observation of the electromagnetic doubly OZI-suppressed decay J/ψ→ϕπ0J/ψ\rightarrow ϕπ^{0}

Using a sample of 1.311.31 billion J/ψJ/ψ events accumulated with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, we report the observation of the decay J/ψ→ϕπ0J/ψ\rightarrow ϕπ^{0}, which is the first evidence for a doubly Okubo-Zweig-Iizuka suppressed electromagnetic J/ψJ/ψ decay. A clear structure is observed in the K+K−K^{+} K^{-} mass spectrum around 1.02 GeV/c2c^2, which can be attributed to interference between J/ψ→ϕπ0J/ψ\rightarrow ϕπ^{0} and J/ψ→K+K−π0J/ψ\rightarrow K^{+}K^{-}π^{0} decays. Due to this interference, two possible solutions are found. Precision measurement of the D∗0D^{*0} decay branching fractions

The ratio of the two branching fractions is $\BR(D^{*0} \to D^0π^0)/\BR(D^{*0} \to D^0γ) =1.90\pm 0.07\pm 0.05$, which is independent of the assumption made above. Using 2.922.92 fb−1^{-1} of electron-positron annihilation data collected at s=3.773\sqrt{s} = 3.773~GeV with the BESIII detector, we report the results of a search for the flavor-changing neutral current process D0→γγD^0\toγγ using a double-tag technique. We find no signal and set an upper limit at 90%90\% confidence level for the branching fraction of B(D0→γγ)<3.8×10−6B(D^0\toγγ) < 3.8\times10^{-6}. We also investigate D0D^0-meson decay into two neutral pions, obtaining a branching fraction of B(D0→π0π0)=(8.24±0.21(stat.)±0.30(syst.))×10−4B(D^0\toπ^0π^0) = (8.24\pm0.21(\text{stat.})\pm0.30(\text{syst.}))\times10^{-4}, the most precise measurement to date and consistent with the current world average

Searches for isospin-violating transitions χc0,2→π0ηcχ_{c0,2} \rightarrow π^{0} η_{c}

Study of e+e−→ωχcJe^+e^-\toωχ_{cJ} at center-of-mass energies from 4.21 to 4.42 GeV

Based on data samples collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider at 9 center-of-mass energies from 4.21 to 4.42 GeV, we search for the production of e+e−→ωχcJe^+e^-\to ωχ_{cJ} (JJ=0, 1, 2). The process e+e−→ωχc0e^+e^-\to ωχ_{c0} is observed for the first time, and the Born cross sections at s\sqrt{s}=4.23 and 4.26 GeV are measured to be (55.4±6.0±5.9)(55.4\pm 6.0\pm 5.9) and (23.7±5.3±3.5)(23.7\pm 5.3\pm 3.5) pb, respectively, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. The ωχc0ωχ_{c0} signals at the other 7 energies and e+e−→ωχc1e^+e^-\to ωχ_{c1} and ωχc2ωχ_{c2} signals are not significant, and the upper limits on the cross sections are determined. By examining the ωχc0ωχ_{c0} cross section as a function of center-of-mass energy, we find that it is inconsistent with the line shape of the Y(4260)Y(4260) observed in e+e−→π+π−J/ψe^+ e^-\toπ^+π^-J/ψ. Assuming the ωχc0ωχ_{c0} signals come from a single resonance, we extract mass and width of the resonance to be (4230±8±6)(4230\pm8\pm6) MeV/c2c^2 and (38±12±2)(38\pm12\pm2) MeV, respectively, and the statistical significance is more than 9σ9σ.

Study of χcJχ_{cJ} decaying into ϕϕ K∗(892)K^*(892) Kˉ\bar{K}

Using a data sample of 106 million ψ(3686)ψ(3686) events collected with the BESIII detector operated at the BEPCII storage ring, we study for the first time the decay χcJ→ϕKS0K±π∓χ_{cJ}\toϕK^{0}_S K^{\pm}π^{\mp} and χcJ→ϕK+K−π0χ_{cJ}\toϕK^{+} K^{-}π^{0} in the E1 radiative transition ψ(3686)→γχcJψ(3686)\toγχ_{cJ}. The decays are dominated by the three-body decay χcJ→ϕK∗(892)Kˉχ_{cJ}\to ϕK^*(892)\bar{K}. We measure branching fractions for this reaction via the neutral and charged K∗(892)K^*(892) and find them consistent with each other within the expectation of isospin symmetry. In the KKˉπK\bar{K}π invariant mass distribution a structure near the K∗(892)KˉK^*(892)\bar{K} mass threshold is observed, and the corresponding mass and width are measured to be 1412±4(stat.)±8(sys.)MeV/c21412\pm4(\mathrm{stat.})\pm8(\mathrm{sys.}) \mathrm{MeV}/c^2 and ΓΓ = 84±12(stat.)±40(sys.)MeV84\pm12(\mathrm{stat.})\pm40(\mathrm{sys.}) \mathrm{MeV}, respectively. In an analysis of a 2.92~fb−1^{-1} data sample taken at 3.773~GeV with the BESIII detector operated at the BEPCII collider, we measure the absolute decay branching fractions to be B(D0→K−e+νe)=(3.505±0.014±0.033)%\mathcal B(D^0 \to K^-e^+ν_e)=(3.505\pm 0.014 \pm 0.033)\% and B(D0→π−e+νe)=(0.295±0.004±0.003)%\mathcal B(D^0 \to π^-e^+ν_e)=(0.295\pm 0.004\pm 0.003)\%. From a study of the differential decay rates we obtain the products of hadronic form factor and the magnitude of the CKM matrix element f+K(0)∣Vcs∣=0.7172±0.0025±0.0035f_{+}^K(0)|V_{cs}|=0.7172\pm0.0025\pm 0.0035 and f+π(0)∣Vcd∣=0.1435±0.0018±0.0009f_{+}^π(0)|V_{cd}|=0.1435\pm0.0018\pm 0.0009. Combining these products with the values of ∣Vcs(d)∣|V_{cs(d)}| from the SM constraint fit, we extract the hadronic form factors f+K(0)=0.7368±0.0026±0.0036f^K_+(0) = 0.7368\pm0.0026\pm 0.0036 and f+π(0)=0.6372±0.0080±0.0044f^π_+(0) = 0.6372\pm0.0080\pm 0.0044, and their ratio f+π(0)/f+K(0)=0.8649±0.0112±0.0073f_+^π(0)/f_+^{K}(0)=0.8649\pm 0.0112\pm 0.0073. These form factors and their ratio are used to test unquenched Lattice QCD calculations of the form factors and a light cone sum rule (LCSR) calculation of their ratio. The measured value of f+K(π)(0)∣Vcs(d)∣f_+^{K(π)}(0) |V_{cs(d)}| and the lattice QCD value for f+K(π)(0)f^{K(π)}_+(0) are used to extract values of the CKM matrix elements of ∣Vcs∣=0.9601±0.0033±0.0047±0.0239|V_{cs}|=0.9601 \pm 0.0033 \pm 0.0047 \pm 0.0239 and ∣Vcd∣=0.2155±0.0027±0.0014±0.0094|V_{cd}|=0.2155 \pm 0.0027 \pm 0.0014 \pm 0.0094, where the third errors are due to the uncertainties in lattice QCD calculations of the form factors. Using the LCSR value for f+π(0)/f+K(0)f_+^π(0)/f_+^K(0), we determine the ratio ∣Vcd∣/∣Vcs∣=0.238±0.004±0.002±0.011|V_{cd}|/|V_{cs}|=0.238\pm 0.004\pm 0.002\pm 0.011, where the third error is from the uncertainty in the LCSR normalization. In addition, we measure form factor parameters for three different theoretical models that describe the weak hadronic charged currents for these two semileptonic decays. All of these measurements are the most precise to date.

The Physics of the B Factories

This work is on the Physics of the B Factories. Part A of this book contains a brief description of the SLAC and KEK B Factories as well as their detectors, BaBar and Belle, and data taking related issues. Part B discusses tools and methods used by the experiments in order to obtain results. The results themselves can be found in Part C. Please note that version 3 on the archive is the auxiliary version of the Physics of the B Factories book. This uses the notation alpha, beta, gamma for the angles of the Unitarity Triangle. The nominal version uses the notation phi_1, phi_2 and phi_3. Please cite this work as Eur. Phys. J. C74 (2014) 3026.

Observation of Time Reversal Violation in the B0 Meson System

Although CP violation in the B meson system has been well established by the B factories, there has been no direct observation of time reversal violation. The decays of entangled neutral B mesons into definite flavor states (B0B^0 or Bˉ0\bar{B}^0), and J/ψKS0J/ψK_S^0 or ccˉKS0c\bar{c} K_S^0 final states (referred to as B+B_+ or B−B_-), allow comparisons between the probabilities of four pairs of T-conjugated transitions, for example, Bˉ0→B−\bar{B}^0 \rightarrow B_- and B−→Bˉ0B_- \rightarrow \bar{B}^0, as a function of the time difference between the two B decays. Using 468 million BBˉB\bar{B} pairs produced in Υ(4S)Υ(4S) decays collected by the BABAR detector at SLAC, we measure T-violating parameters in the time evolution of neutral B mesons, yielding ΔST+=−1.37±0.14(stat.)±0.06(syst.)ΔS_T^+ = -1.37 \pm 0.14 (stat.) \pm 0.06 (syst.) and ΔST−=1.17±0.18(stat.)±0.11(syst.)ΔS_T^- = 1.17 \pm 0.18 (stat.) \pm 0.11 (syst.). These nonzero results represent the first direct observation of T violation through the exchange of initial and final states in transitions that can only be connected by a T-symmetry transformation.

The SuperB asymmetric collider, which was to be constructed on the Tor Vergata campus near the INFN Frascati National Laboratory, was designed to operate both at the Upsilon(4S) center-of-mass energy with a luminosity of 10^{36} cm^{-2}s^{-1} and at the tau/charm production threshold with a luminosity of 10^{35} cm^{-2}s^{-1}. This high luminosity, producing a data sample about a factor 100 larger than present B Factories, would allow investigation of new physics effects in rare decays, CP Violation and Lepton Flavour Violation. This document details the detector design presented in the Conceptual Design Report (CDR) in 2007. The R&D and engineering studies performed to arrive at the full detector design are described, and an updated cost estimate is presented. A combination of a more realistic cost estimates and the unavailability of funds due of the global economic climate led to a formal cancelation of the project on Nov 27, 2012.

Branching fraction and form-factor shape measurements of exclusive charmless semileptonic B decays, and determination of |V_{ub}|

We report the results of a study of the exclusive charmless semileptonic decays, B^0 --> pi^- l^+ nu, B^+ --> pi^0 l^+ nu, B^+ --> omega l^+ nu, B^+ --> eta l^+ nu and B^+ --> eta^' l^+ nu, (l = e or mu) undertaken with approximately 462x10^6 B\bar{B} pairs collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the BABAR detector. The analysis uses events in which the signal B decays are reconstructed with a loose neutrino reconstruction technique. We obtain partial branching fractions in several bins of q^2, the square of the momentum transferred to the lepton-neutrino pair, for B^0 --> pi^- l^+ nu, B^+ --> pi^0 l^+ nu, B^+ --> omega l^+ nu and B^+ --> eta l^+ nu. From these distributions, we extract the form-factor shapes f_+(q^2) and the total branching fractions BF(B^0 --> pi^- l^+ nu) = (1.45 +/- 0.04_{stat} +/- 0.06_{syst})x10^-4 (combined pi^- and pi^0 decay channels assuming isospin symmetry), BF(B^+ --> omega l^+ nu) = (1.19 +/- 0.16_{stat} +/- 0.09_{syst})x10^-4 and BF(B^+ --> eta l^+ nu) = (0.38 +/- 0.05_{stat} +/- 0.05_{syst})x10^-4. We also measure BF(B^+ --> eta^' l^+ nu) = (0.24 +/- 0.08_{stat} +/- 0.03_{syst})x10^-4. We obtain values for the magnitude of the CKM matrix element V_{ub} by direct comparison with three different QCD calculations in restricted q^2 ranges of B --> pi l^+ nu decays. From a simultaneous fit to the experimental data over the full q^2 range and the FNAL/MILC lattice QCD predictions, we obtain |V_{ub}| = (3.25 +/- 0.31)x10^-3, where the error is the combined experimental and theoretical uncertainty.

Initial-State Radiation Measurement of the e+e- -> pi+pi-pi+pi- Cross Section

We study the process e+e- -> pi+pi-pi+pi-gamma, with a photon emitted from the initial-state electron or positron, using 454.3 fb^-1 of data collected with the BABAR detector at SLAC, corresponding to approximately 260,000 signal events. We use these data to extract the non-radiative sigma(e+e- ->pi+pi-pi+pi-) cross section in the energy range from 0.6 to 4.5 Gev. The total uncertainty of the cross section measurement in the peak region is less than 3%, higher in precision than the corresponding results obtained from energy scan data.

Evidence for the h_b(1P) meson in the decay Upsilon(3S) --> pi0 h_b(1P)

Using a sample of 122 million Upsilon(3S) events recorded with the BaBar detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e+e- collider at SLAC, we search for the hb(1P)h_b(1P) spin-singlet partner of the P-wave chi_{bJ}(1P) states in the sequential decay Upsilon(3S) --> pi0 h_b(1P), h_b(1P) --> gamma eta_b(1S). We observe an excess of events above background in the distribution of the recoil mass against the pi0 at mass 9902 +/- 4(stat.) +/- 2(syst.) MeV/c^2. The width of the observed signal is consistent with experimental resolution, and its significance is 3.1sigma, including systematic uncertainties. We obtain the value (4.3 +/- 1.1(stat.) +/- 0.9(syst.)) x 10^{-4} for the product branching fraction BF(Upsilon(3S)-->pi0 h_b) x BF(h_b-->gamma eta_b).

Observation of the baryonic B decay B0bar --> Lambda_c^+ anti-Lambda K-

We report the observation of the baryonic B decay B0bar --> Lambda_c^+ anti-Lambda K- with a significance larger than 7 standard deviations based on 471x10^6$ BBbar pairs collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II storage ring at SLAC. We measure the branching fraction for the decay B0bar --> Lambda_c^+ anti-Lambda K- to be (3.8 \pm 0.8_{stat} \pm 0.2_{sys} \pm 1.0_{Lambda_c^+})x10^{-5}. The uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and due to the uncertainty in the Lambda_c^+ branching fraction. We find that the Lambda_c^+ K^- invariant mass distribution shows an enhancement above 3.5 GeV/c^2.

Search for hadronic decays of a light Higgs boson in the radiative decay Upsilon --> gamma A0

We search for hadronic decays of a light Higgs boson (A0) produced in radiative decays of an Upsilon(2S) or Upsilon(3S) meson, Upsilon --> gamma A0. The data have been recorded by the BABAR experiment at the Upsilon(3S) and Upsilon(2S) center of mass energies, and include (121.3 \pm 1.2) x 10^6 Upsilon(3S) and (98.3 \pm 0.9) x 10^6 Upsilon(2S) mesons. No significant signal is observed. We set 90% confidence level upper limits on the product branching fractions B(Upsilon(nS)-->gamma A0) x B(A0-->hadrons) (n=2 or 3) that range from 1 x 10^{-6} for an A0 mass of 0.3 GeV/c^2 to 8 x 10^{-5} at 7 GeV/c^2.

Study of radiative bottomonium transitions using converted photons

We use 111+/-1 million Upsilon(3S) and 89+/-1 million Upsilon(2S) events recorded by the BaBar detector at the PEP-II B-factory at SLAC to perform a study of radiative transitions between bottomonium states using photons that have been converted to e+e- pairs by the detector material. We observe Upsilon(3S) -> gamma chi_b0,2(1P) decay, make precise measurements of the branching fractions for chi_b1,2(1P,2P) -> gamma Upsilon(1S) and chi_b1,2(2P) -> gamma Upsilon(2S) decays, and search for radiative decay to the eta_b(1S) and eta_b(2S) states.
