Landau level collapse in graphene in the presence of in-plane radial electric and perpendicular magnetic fields

It is known that in two-dimensional relativistic Dirac systems placed in orthogonal uniform magnetic and electric fields, the Landau levels collapse as the applied in-plane electric field reaches a critical value $\pm E_c$. We study this phenomenon for a distinct field configuration with in-plane constant radial electric field. The Dirac equation for this configuration does not allow analytical solutions in terms of known special functions. The results are obtained by using both the WKB approximation and the exact diagonalization and shooting methods. It is shown that the collapse occurs for positive values of the total angular momentum quantum number, the hole (electron)-like Landau levels collapse as the electric field reaches the value $ +(-) E_c/2$. The investigation of the Landau level collapse in the case of gapped graphene shows a number of distinctive features in comparison with the gapless case.

Landau-Khalatnikov-Fradkin transformation in three-dimensional quenched QED

We study the gauge-covariance of the massless fermion propagator in three-dimensional quenched Quantum Electrodynamics in the framework of dimensional regularization in d=3-2\ep. Assuming the finiteness of the quenched perturbative expansion, that is the existence of the limit \ep \to 0, we state that, exactly in d=3, all odd perturbative coefficients, starting with the third order one, should be zero in any gauge.

RKKY interaction in a doped pseudospin-1 fermion system at finite temperature

We study the RKKY interaction of magnetic impurities in the $α-\mathcal{T}_3$ model which hosts pseudospin-1 fermions with two dispersive and one flat bands. By using the effective low-energy Hamiltonian we calculate the RKKY coupling for impurities placed on the same or different sublattices. We find that there are three types of interaction, which depend on the model parameter defining the relative strength of hoppings between sublattices, two of them can be reduced to graphene case while the third one is new and is due to the presence of a flat zero-energy band. We derive general analytical expressions for the RKKY interaction in terms of Mellin-Barnes type integrals and analyze different limiting cases. The cases of finite chemical potential and temperature, as well as asymptotic at large distances are considered. We show that the interaction between impurities located at different rim sites displays a very strong temperature dependence at small doping being a direct consequence of the flat band. The subtleties of the theorem for signs of the RKKY interaction at zero doping, as applied to the $\mathcal{T}_3$ lattice, related to the existence of a dispersionless flat band are discussed.

Work function, deformation potential, and collapse of Landau levels in strained graphene and silicene

We perform a systematic {\it ab initio} study of the work function and its uniform strain dependence for graphene and silicene for both tensile and compressive strains. The Poisson ratios associated with armchair and zigzag strains are also computed. Based on these results, we obtain the deformation potential, crucial for straintronics, as a function of the applied strain. Further, we propose a particular experimental setup with a special strain configuration that generates only the electric field, while the pseudomagnetic field is absent. Then, applying a real magnetic field, one should be able to realize experimentally the spectacular phenomenon of the collapse of Landau levels in graphene or related two-dimensional materials.

Critical number of fermions in three-dimensional QED

Previous analytical studies of quantum electrodynamics in $2+1$ dimensions (QED3) have shown the existence of a critical number of fermions for onset of chiral symmetry breaking, the most known being the value $N_c\approx3.28$ obtained by Nash to $1/N^2$ order in the $1/N$ expansion [16]. This analysis is reconsidered by solving the Dyson-Schwinger equations for the fermion propagator and the vertex to show that the more accurate gauge independent value is $N_c\approx2.85$, and for $N<N_c$ the chiral symmetry is dynamically broken. An estimate for the value of chiral condensate $\langle\barψψ\rangle$ is given for $N=2$. Knowing precise $N_c$ would be important for comparison between continuum studies and lattice simulations of QED3.

Gap generation and phase diagram in strained graphene in a magnetic field

The gap equation for Dirac quasiparticles in monolayer graphene in constant magnetic and pseudomagnetic fields, where the latter is due to strain, is studied in a low-energy effective model with contact interactions. Analyzing solutions of the gap equation, the phase diagram of the system in the plane of pseudomagnetic and parallel magnetic fields is obtained in the approximation of the lowest Landau level. The three quantum Hall states, ferromagnetic, antiferromagnetic, and canted antiferromagnetic, are realized in different regions of the phase diagram. It is found that the structure of the phase diagram is sensitive to signs and values of certain four-fermion interaction couplings which break the approximate spin-value SU(4) symmetry of the model.

Supercritical electric dipole and migration of electron wave function in graphene

We study the Dirac equation for quasiparticles in gapped graphene with two oppositely charged impurities by using the technique of linear combination of atomic orbitals and variational Galerkin--Kantorovich method. We show that for sufficiently large charges of impurities the wave function of the occupied electron bound state of the highest energy changes its localization from the negatively charged impurity to the positively charged one as the distance between the impurities increases. This migration of the electron wave function of supercritical electric dipole is a generalization of the familiar phenomenon of the atomic collapse of single charged impurity to the case where electron-hole pairs are spontaneously created from vacuum in bound states with charge impurities thus partially screening them.

Supercriticality of novel type induced by electric dipole in gapped graphene

We reveal a new type of supercritical behavior in gapped graphene with two oppositely charged impurities by studying the two-dimensional Dirac equation for quasiparticles with the Coulomb potential regularized at small distances accounting the lattice effects. By utilizing the variational Galerkin--Kantorovich method, we show that for supercritical electric dipole the wave function of the electron bound state changes its localization from the negatively charged impurity to the positively charged one as the distance between the impurities changes. Such a migration of the wave function corresponds to the electron and hole spontaneously created from the vacuum in bound states screening the positively and negatively charged impurities of the supercritical electric dipole, respectively. We generalize our results to a particle-hole asymmetric case, where the charges of impurities differ in signs and absolute values and demonstrate that the necessary energetic condition for the supercriticality of novel type to occur is that the energy levels of single positively and negatively charged impurities traverse together the energy distance separating the upper and lower continua. The robustness of the supercriticality of novel type is confirmed by the study of an exactly solvable 1D problem of the Dirac equation with the square well and barrier potential modeling an electric dipole potential.

Transport properties of AB stacked (Bernal) bilayer graphene on and without substrate within 2- and 4-band approximations

We present the results of the calculations of longitudinal and Hall conductivities of AB-stacked bilayer graphene as a function of frequency, finite chemical potential, temperature both with and without magnetic fields on a base of 2- and 4-band effective models. The limited cases of the conductivities for direct current are derived. The relations being important for optoelectronic among Hall conductivities and Faraday, Kerr angles in the AB-bilayers samples in the electric and magnetic fields when the radiation passes across bilayer sheets on different kinds a substrate are obtained.

Anomalous thermospin effect in the low-buckled Dirac materials

A strong spin Nernst effect with nontrivial dependences on the carrier concentration and electric field applied is expected in silicene and other low-buckled Dirac materials. These Dirac materials can be considered as being made of two independent electron subsystems of the two-component gapped Dirac fermions. For each subsystem the gap breaks a time-reversal symmetry and thus plays a role of an effective magnetic field. Accordingly, the standard Kubo formalism has to be altered by including the effective magnetization in order to satisfy the third law of thermodynamics. We explicitly demonstrate this by calculating the magnetization and showing how the correct thermoelectric coefficient emerges.

Gap generation in ABC-stacked multilayer graphene: screening vs band flattening

We calculate the dynamical polarization function and solve a self-consistent gap equation in the random phase approximation in undoped ABC-stacked n-layer graphene. We find that the gap is maximal in trilayer graphene and decreases monotonously for $n \ge 4$ because the effects of screening in the gap equation win over those connected with the flattening of electron bands as n increases.

Supercritical instability in graphene with two charged impurities

We study the supercritical instability in gapped graphene with two charged impurities separated by distance R using the two-dimensional Dirac equation for electron quasiparticles. Attention is paid to a situation when charges of impurities are subcritical, whereas their total charge exceeds a critical one. The critical distance R_{cr} in the system of two charged centers is defined as that at which the electron bound state with the lowest energy reaches the boundary of the lower continuum. A variational calculation of the critical distance R_{cr} separating the supercritical (R<R_{cr}) and subcritical (R>R_{cr}) regimes is carried out. It is shown that the critical distance R_{cr} increases as the quasiparticle gap decreases. The energy and width of a quasistationary state as functions of the distance between two impurities are derived in the quasiclassical approximation.

Broken-symmetry $ν=0$ quantum Hall states in bilayer graphene: Landau level mixing and dynamical screening

For bilayer graphene in a magnetic field at the neutral point, we derive and solve a full set of gap equations including all Landau levels and taking into account the dynamically screened Coulomb interaction. There are two types of the solutions for the filling factor $ν=0$: (i) a spin-polarized type solution, which is the ground state at small values of perpendicular electric field $E_{\perp}$, and (ii) a layer-polarized solution, which is the ground state at large values of $E_{\perp}$. The critical value of $E_{\perp}$ that determines the transition point is a linear function of the magnetic field, i.e., $E_{\perp,{\rm cr}}=E_{\perp}^{\rm off}+a B$, where $E_{\perp}^{\rm off}$ is the offset electric field and $a$ is the slope. The offset electric field and energy gaps substantially increase with the inclusion of dynamical screening compared to the case of static screening. The obtained values for the offset and the energy gaps are comparable with experimental ones. The interaction with dynamical screening can be strong enough for reordering the levels in the quasiparticle spectrum (the $n=2$ Landau level sinks below the $n=0$ and $n=1$ ones).

Broken-symmetry states and phase diagram of the lowest Landau level in bilayer graphene

Broken-symmetry quantum Hall (QH) states with filling factors ν=0, \pm 1, \pm 2, \pm 3 in the lowest Landau level in bilayer graphene are analyzed by solving the gap equation in the random phase approximation. It is shown that in the plane of electric and magnetic fields, the critical line, which separates the spin and layer polarized phases at ν=0, extends to the ν=\pm 1 QH states. The amplitudes of the gaps in the ν= \pm 1, \pm 3, and ν= \pm 2 QH states are significantly smaller than the amplitude of the ν=0 gap, due to the separate filling of the n=0,1 orbital Landau levels and the negative contribution of the Hartree term, respectively. It is shown that those values of the external electric field where the conductance is not quantized correspond to the minima of the gaps.

Coexistence and competition of nematic and gapped states in bilayer graphene

In bilayer graphene, the phase diagram in the plane of a strain-induced bare nematic term, ${\cal N}_{0}$, and a top-bottom gates voltage imbalance, $U_{0}$, is obtained by solving the gap equation in the random-phase approximation. At nonzero ${\cal N}_0$ and $U_0$, the phase diagram consists of two hybrid spin-valley symmetry-broken phases with both nontrivial nematic and mass-type order parameters. The corresponding phases are separated by a critical line of first- and second-order phase transitions at small and large values of ${\cal N}_0$, respectively. The existence of a critical end point, where the line of first-order phase transitions terminates, is predicted. For ${\cal N}_0=0$, a pure gapped state with a broken spin-valley symmetry is the ground state of the system. As ${\cal N}_{0}$ increases, the nematic order parameter increases, and the gap weakens in the hybrid state. For $U_{0}=0$, a quantum second-order phase transition from the hybrid state into a pure gapless nematic state occurs when the strain reaches a critical value. A nonzero $U_{0}$ suppresses the critical value of the strain. The relevance of these results to recent experiments is briefly discussed.

Coulomb interaction and magnetic catalysis in the quantum Hall effect in graphene

The dynamics of symmetry breaking responsible for lifting the degeneracy of the Landau levels in the integer quantum Hall effect in graphene is studied in a low-energy model with the Coulomb interaction. The gap equation for Dirac quasiparticles is analyzed for both the lowest and higher Landau levels, taking into account the Landau levels mixing. It is shown that the characteristic feature of the long-range Coulomb interaction is the decrease of the gap parameters with increasing the Landau level index $n$ ("running" gaps). The renormalization (running) of the Fermi velocity as a function of $n$ is also studied. The solutions of the gap equation reproduce correctly the experimentally observed integer quantum Hall plateaus in graphene in strong magnetic fields.

Magnetic field driven instability in planar NJL model in real-time formalism

It is known that the symmetric (massless) state of the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model in 2+1 dimensions in a magnetic field B is not the ground state of the system at zero temperature due to the presence of a negative, linear in &|σ+iπ|$, term in the effective potential for the composite fields $σ\sim\barψψ$ and $π\sim\barψiγ^5ψ$, while the quadratic term is always positive (a tachyon is absent). We find that finite temperature is a necessary ingredient for the tachyonic instability of the symmetric state to occur. Utilizing the Schwinger--Keldysh real-time formalism we calculate the dispersion relations for the fluctuation modes of the composite fields $σ$ and $π$. We demonstrate the presence of the tachyonic instability of the symmetric state for coupling constant that exceeds a certain critical value which vanishes as temperature tends to zero in accordance with the phenomenon of magnetic catalysis.

Magneto-optical and optical probes of gapped ground states of bilayer graphene

We study the influence of different kinds of gaps in a quasiparticle spectrum on longitudinal and transverse optical conductivities of bilayer graphene. An exact analytical expression for magneto-optical conductivity is derived using a low-energy two-band Hamiltonian. We consider how the layer asymmetry gap caused by a bias electric field and a time-reversal symmetry breaking gap affect the absorption lines. The limit of zero magnetic field is then analyzed for an arbitrary carrier density in the two-band model. For a neutral bilayer graphene, the optical Hall and longitudinal conductivities are calculated exactly in the four-band model with four different gaps and zero magnetic field. It is shown that two different time-reversal symmetry breaking states can be distinguished by analyzing the dependence of the optical Hall conductivity on the energy of photon. These time-reversal symmetry breaking states are expected to be observed experimentally via optical polarization rotation either in the Faraday or Kerr effects. We analyze a possibility of such an experiment for a free-standing graphene, graphene on a thick substrate, and graphene on a double-layer substrate.

Magnetic field driven instability of charged center in graphene

It is shown that a magnetic field dramatically affects the problem of supercritical charge in graphene making any charge in gapless theory supercritical. The cases of radially symmetric potential well and Coulomb center in an homogeneous magnetic field are considered. The local density of states and polarization charge density are calculated in the first order of perturbation theory. It is argued that the magnetically induced instability of the supercritical Coulomb center can be considered as a quantum mechanical counterpart of the magnetic catalysis phenomenon in graphene.

Dynamical polarization of monolayer graphene in a magnetic field

The one-loop dynamical polarization function of graphene in an external magnetic field is calculated as a function of wavevector and frequency at finite chemical potential, temperature, band gap, and width of Landau levels. The exact analytic result is given in terms of digamma functions and generalized Laguerre polynomials, and has the form of double sum over Landau levels. Various limits (static, clean, etc) are discussed. The Thomas-Fermi inverse length $q_F$ of screening of the Coulomb potential is found to be an oscillating function of a magnetic field and a chemical potential. At zero temperature and scattering rate, it vanishes when the Fermi level lies between the Landau levels.

Dynamics and phase diagram of the $ν=0$ quantum Hall state in bilayer graphene

Utilizing the Baym-Kadanoff formalism with the polarization function calculated in the random phase approximation, the dynamics of the $ν=0$ quantum Hall state in bilayer graphene is analyzed. Two phases with nonzero energy gap, the ferromagnetic and layer asymmetric ones, are found. The phase diagram in the plane $(\tildeΔ_0,B)$, where $\tildeΔ_0$ is a top-bottom gates voltage imbalance, is described. It is shown that the energy gaps in these phases scale linearly, $ΔE\sim 10 B[T]K, with magnetic field. The comparison of these results with recent experiments in bilayer graphene is presented.

Gap generation and semimetal-insulator phase transition in graphene

The gap generation is studied in suspended clean graphene in the continuum model for quasiparticles with the Coulomb interaction. We solve the gap equation with the dynamical polarization function and show that, comparing to the case of the static polarization function, the critical coupling constant lowers to the value α_c=0.92, which is close to that obtained in lattice Monte Carlo simulations. It is argued that additional short-range four-fermion interactions should be included in the continuum model to account for the lattice simulation results. We obtain the critical line in the plane of electromagnetic and four-fermion coupling constants and find a second order phase transition separating zero gap and gapped phases with critical exponents close to those found in lattice calculations.

Thermal conductivity and competing orders in d-wave superconductors

We derive the expression for the thermal conductivity κin the low-temperature limit T \to 0 in d-wave superconductors, taking into account the presence of competing orders such as spin-density wave, is-pairing, etc.. The expression is used for analyzing recent experimental data in La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4. Our analysis strongly suggests that competing orders can be responsible for anomalies in behavior of thermal conductivity observed in those experiments.

Anomalous dimensions of gauge-invariant amplitudes in massless effective gauge theories of strongly correlated systems

We use the radial gauge to calculate the recently proposed ansatz for the physical electron propagator in such effective models of strongly correlated electron systems as the $QED_3$ theory of the pseudogap phase of the cuprates. The results of our analysis help to settle the recent dispute about the sign and the magnitude of the anomalous dimension which characterizes the gauge invariant amplitude in question and set the stage for computing other, more physically relevant, ones.

Spontaneous rotational symmetry breaking and roton like excitations in gauged sigma-model at finite density

The linear $σ$-model with a chemical potential for hypercharge is a toy model for the description of the dynamics of the kaon condensate in high density QCD. We analyze the dynamics of the gauged version of this model. It is shown that spontaneous breakdown of $SU(2) \times U(1)_{Y}$ symmetry, caused by the chemical potential, is always accompanied by spontaneous breakdown of both rotational symmetry and electromagnetic $U(1)_{em}$. The spectrum of excitations in this model is rich and, because of rotational symmetry breakdown, anisotropic. It is shown that there exist excitation branches that behave as phonon like quasiparticles for small momenta and as roton like ones for large momenta. This suggests that this model can be relevant for anisotropic superfluid systems.

Analytic structure of scalar composites in the symmetric phase of the gauged Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model

The gauged Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model in the quenched-ladder approximation has non-trivial dynamics near a critical scaling region (critical curve) separating a chiral symmetric and a dynamically chiral symmetry broken phase. Scalar and pseudoscalar composites corresponding to the four-fermion interaction become relevant degrees of freedom at short distances, which is reflected in the appearance of a large anomalous dimension of the four-fermion operators. A method is introduced for solving the Schwinger-Dyson equation for the Yukawa vertex in specific kinematic regimes. This allows one to derive an analytic expression for the scalar propagator, which is valid along the entire critical curve. The mass and width of the scalar composites in the critical scaling region are reexamined and the conformal phase transition at the critical gauge coupling is discussed.

Chiral symmetry breaking in dimensionally regularized nonperturbative quenched QED

In this paper we study dynamical chiral symmetry breaking in dimensionally regularized quenched QED within the context of Dyson-Schwinger equations. In D < 4 dimensions the theory has solutions which exhibit chiral symmetry breaking for all values of the coupling. To begin with, we study this phenomenon both numerically and, with some approximations, analytically within the rainbow approximation in the Landau gauge. In particular, we discuss how to extract the critical coupling alpha_c = pi/3 relevant in four dimensions from the D dimensional theory. We further present analytic results for the chirally symmetric solution obtained with the Curtis-Pennington vertex as well as numerical results for solutions exhibiting chiral symmetry breaking. For these we demonstrate that, using dimensional regularization, the extraction of the critical coupling relevant for this vertex is feasible. Initial results for this critical coupling are in agreement with cut-off based work within the currently achievable numerical precision.

Derivative Expansion for the One-Loop Effective Lagrangian in QED

The derivative expansion of the one-loop effective Lagrangian in QED$_4$ is considered. The first term in such an expansion is the famous Schwinger result for a constant electromagnetic field. In this paper we give an explicit expression for the next term containing two derivatives of the field strength $F_{μν}$. The results are presented for both fermion and scalar electrodynamics. Some possible applications of an inhomogeneous external field are pointed out.
