Chiral anomalous processes in magnetospheres of pulsars and black holes

We propose that chirally asymmetric plasma can be produced in the gap regions of the magnetospheres of pulsars and black holes. We show that, in the case of supermassive black holes situated in active galactic nuclei, the chiral charge density and the chiral chemical potential are very small and unlikely to have any observable effects. In contrast, the chiral asymmetry produced in the magnetospheres of magnetars can be substantial. It can trigger the chiral plasma instability that, in turn, can lead to observable phenomena in magnetars. In particular, the instability should trigger circularly polarized electromagnetic radiation in a wide window of frequencies, spanning from radio to near-infrared. As such, the produced chiral charge has the potential to affect some features of fast radio bursts.

Anomalous Maxwell equations for inhomogeneous chiral plasma

Using the chiral kinetic theory we derive the electric and chiral current densities in inhomogeneous relativistic plasma. We also derive equations for the electric and chiral charge chemical potentials that close the Maxwell equations in such a plasma. The analysis is done in the regimes with and without a drift of the plasma as a whole. In addition to the currents present in the homogeneous plasma (Hall current, chiral magnetic, chiral separation, and chiral electric separation effects, as well as Ohm's current) we derive several new terms associated with inhomogeneities of the plasma. Apart from various diffusion-like terms, we find also new dissipation-less terms that are independent of relaxation time. Their origin can be traced to the Berry curvature modifications of the kinetic theory.

Chiral separation and chiral magnetic effects in a slab: The role of boundaries

We study the chiral separation and chiral magnetic effects in a slab of Dirac semimetal of finite thickness, placed in a constant magnetic field perpendicular to its surfaces. We utilize the Bogolyubov boundary conditions with a large Dirac mass (band gap) outside the slab. We find that, in a finite thickness slab, the axial current density is induced by helicity-correlated standing waves and, as a consequence, is quantized. The quantization is seen in its stepped-shape dependence on the fermion chemical potential and a sawtooth-shape dependence on the thickness of the slab. In contrast to a naive expectation, there is no chiral charge accumulation anywhere in the bulk or at the boundaries of the semimetal. In the same slab geometry, we also find that a nonzero chiral chemical potential induces no electric current, as might have been expected from the chiral magnetic effect. We argue that this outcome is natural and points to the truly non-static nature of the latter. By taking into account a nonzero electric field of a double layer near the boundaries of the slab, we find that the low-energy modes under consideration satisfy the continuity equation for axial current density without the anomalous term.

Electrified magnetic catalysis in three-dimensional topological insulators

The gap equations for the surface quasiparticle propagators in a slab of three-dimensional topological insulator in external electric and magnetic fields perpendicular to the slab surfaces are analyzed and solved. A different type of magnetic catalysis is revealed with the dynamical generation of both Haldane and Dirac gaps. Its characteristic feature manifests itself in the crucial role that the electric field plays in dynamical symmetry breaking and the generation of a Dirac gap in the slab. It is argued that, for a sufficiently large external electric field, the ground state of the system is a phase with a homogeneous surface charge density.

Origin of dissipative Fermi arc transport in Weyl semimetals

By making use of a low-energy effective model of Weyl semimetals, we show that the Fermi arc transport is dissipative. The origin of the dissipation is the scattering of the surface Fermi arc states into the bulk of the semimetal. It is noticeable that corresponding scattering rate is nonzero and can be estimated even in a perturbative theory, although in general the reliable calculations of transport properties necessitate a nonperturbative approach. Nondecoupling of the surface and bulk sectors in the low-energy theory of Weyl semimetals invalidates the usual argument of a nondissipative transport due to one-dimensional arc states. This property of Weyl semimetals is in drastic contrast to that of topological insulators, where the decoupling is protected by a gap in the bulk. Within the framework of the linear response theory, we obtain an approximate result for the conductivity due to the Fermi arc states and analyze its dependence on chemical potential, temperature, and other parameters of the model.

Dirac semimetals $A_3Bi$ ($A$=Na,K,Rb) as $Z_2$ Weyl semimetals

We demonstrate that the physical reason for the nontrivial topological properties of Dirac semimetals $A_3 Bi$ (A=Na,K,Rb) is connected with a discrete symmetry of the low-energy effective Hamiltonian. By making use of this discrete symmetry, we argue that all electron states can be split into two separate sectors of the theory. Each sector describes a Weyl semimetal with a pair of Weyl nodes and broken time-reversal symmetry. The latter symmetry is not broken in the complete theory because the time-reversal transformation interchanges states from different sectors. Our findings are supported by explicit calculations of the Berry curvature. In each sector, the field lines of the curvature reveal a pair of monopoles of the Berry flux at the positions of Weyl nodes. The $Z_2$ Weyl semimetal nature is also confirmed by the existence of pairs of surface Fermi arcs, which originate from different sectors of the theory.

Surface Fermi arcs in $Z_2$ Weyl semimetals $A_3 Bi$ (A=Na, K, Rb)

The surface Fermi arc states in $Z_2$ Weyl semimetals $A_3 Bi$ (A=Na, K, Rb) are studied by employing a continuum low-energy effective model. It is shown that the surface Fermi arc states can be classified with respect to the ud-parity symmetry. Because of the symmetry, the arcs come in mirror symmetric pairs. The effects of symmetry breaking terms on the structure of the Fermi arcs are also studied. Among other results, we find at least two qualitatively different types of the surface Fermi arcs. The arcs of the first type link disconnected sheets of the bulk Fermi surface, while arcs of the second type link different points of the same bulk Fermi surface sheet.

Chiral anomaly, dimensional reduction, and magnetoresistivity of Weyl and Dirac semimetals

By making use of the Kubo formula, we calculate the conductivity of Dirac and Weyl semimetals in a magnetic field. We find that the longitudinal (along the direction of the magnetic field) magnetoresistivity is negative at sufficiently large magnetic fields for {\it both} Dirac and Weyl semimetals. The physical reason of this phenomenon is intimately connected with the dimensional spatial reduction $3 \to 1$ in the dynamics of the lowest Landau level. The off-diagonal component of the transverse (with respect to the direction of the magnetic field) conductivity in Weyl semimetals contains an anomalous contribution directly proportional to the momentum space separation between the Weyl nodes. This contribution comes exclusively from the lowest Landau level and, as expected, is independent of the temperature, chemical potential, and magnetic field. The other part of the off-diagonal conductivity is the same as in Dirac semimetals and is connected with a nonzero density of charge carriers. The signatures for experimental distinguishing Weyl semimetals from Dirac ones through the measurements of conductivity are discussed.

Chiral asymmetry in cold QED plasma in a strong magnetic field

The interaction induced chiral asymmetry is calculated in cold QED plasma beyond the weak-field approximation. By making use of the recently developed Landau-level representation for the fermion self-energy, the chiral shift and the parity-even chiral chemical potential function are obtained with the help of numerical methods. The results are used to quantify the chiral asymmetry of the Fermi surface in dense QED matter. Because of the weakness of the QED interactions, the value of the asymmetry appears to be rather small even in the strongest magnetic fields and at the highest stellar densities. However, the analogous asymmetry can be substantial in the case of dense quark matter.

Quantum oscillations as a probe of interaction effects in Weyl semimetals in a magnetic field

The Weyl semimetal surface is modeled by applying the Bogolyubov boundary conditions, in which the quasiparticles have an infinite Dirac mass outside the semimetal. For a Weyl semimetal shaped as a slab of finite thickness, we derive an exact spectral equation for the quasiparticle states and obtain the spectrum of the bulk as well as surface Fermi arc modes. We also show that, in the presence of the magnetic field, the separation between Weyl nodes in momentum space and the length of the Fermi arcs in the reciprocal space are affected by the interactions. As a result, we find that the period of oscillations of the density of states related to closed magnetic orbits involving Fermi arcs has a nontrivial dependence on the orientation of the magnetic field projection in the plane of the semimetal surface. We conclude that the momentum space separation between Weyl nodes and its modification due the interaction effects in the magnetic field can be measured in the experimental studies of quantum oscillations.

Chiral asymmetry in QED matter in a magnetic field

We calculate the electron self-energy in a magnetized QED plasma to the leading perturbative order in the coupling constant and to the linear order in an external magnetic field. We find that the chiral asymmetry of the normal ground state of the system is characterized by two new Dirac structures. One of them is the familiar chiral shift previously discussed in the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. The other structure is new. It formally looks like that of the chiral chemical potential but is an odd function of the longitudinal component of the momentum, directed along the magnetic field. The origin of this new parity-even chiral structure is directly connected with the long-range character of the QED interaction. The form of the Fermi surface in the weak magnetic field is determined.

Engineering Weyl nodes in Dirac semimetals by a magnetic field

We study the phase diagram of a Dirac semimetal in a magnetic field at a nonzero charge density. It is shown that there exists a critical value of the chemical potential at which a first-order phase transition takes place. At subcritical values of the chemical potential the ground state is a gapped state with a dynamically generated Dirac mass and a broken chiral symmetry. The supercritical phase is the normal (gapless) phase with a nontrivial chiral structure: it is a Weyl semimetal with a pair of Weyl nodes for each of the original Dirac points. The nodes are separated by a dynamically induced chiral shift. The direction of the chiral shift coincides with that of the magnetic field and its magnitude is determined by the quasiparticle charge density, the strength of the magnetic field, and the strength of the interaction. The rearrangement of the Fermi surface accompanying this phase transition is described.

Radiative corrections to chiral separation effect in QED

We calculate the leading radiative corrections to the axial current in the chiral separation effect in dense QED in a magnetic field. Contrary to the conventional wisdom suggesting that the axial current should be exactly fixed by the chiral anomaly relation and is described by the topological contribution on the lowest Landau level in the free theory, we find in fact that the axial current receives nontrivial radiative corrections. The direct calculations performed to the linear order in the external magnetic field show that the nontrivial radiative corrections to the axial current are provided by the Fermi surface singularity in the fermion propagator at nonzero fermion density.

Broken-symmetry $ν=0$ quantum Hall states in bilayer graphene: Landau level mixing and dynamical screening

For bilayer graphene in a magnetic field at the neutral point, we derive and solve a full set of gap equations including all Landau levels and taking into account the dynamically screened Coulomb interaction. There are two types of the solutions for the filling factor $ν=0$: (i) a spin-polarized type solution, which is the ground state at small values of perpendicular electric field $E_{\perp}$, and (ii) a layer-polarized solution, which is the ground state at large values of $E_{\perp}$. The critical value of $E_{\perp}$ that determines the transition point is a linear function of the magnetic field, i.e., $E_{\perp,{\rm cr}}=E_{\perp}^{\rm off}+a B$, where $E_{\perp}^{\rm off}$ is the offset electric field and $a$ is the slope. The offset electric field and energy gaps substantially increase with the inclusion of dynamical screening compared to the case of static screening. The obtained values for the offset and the energy gaps are comparable with experimental ones. The interaction with dynamical screening can be strong enough for reordering the levels in the quasiparticle spectrum (the $n=2$ Landau level sinks below the $n=0$ and $n=1$ ones).

Coexistence and competition of nematic and gapped states in bilayer graphene

In bilayer graphene, the phase diagram in the plane of a strain-induced bare nematic term, ${\cal N}_{0}$, and a top-bottom gates voltage imbalance, $U_{0}$, is obtained by solving the gap equation in the random-phase approximation. At nonzero ${\cal N}_0$ and $U_0$, the phase diagram consists of two hybrid spin-valley symmetry-broken phases with both nontrivial nematic and mass-type order parameters. The corresponding phases are separated by a critical line of first- and second-order phase transitions at small and large values of ${\cal N}_0$, respectively. The existence of a critical end point, where the line of first-order phase transitions terminates, is predicted. For ${\cal N}_0=0$, a pure gapped state with a broken spin-valley symmetry is the ground state of the system. As ${\cal N}_{0}$ increases, the nematic order parameter increases, and the gap weakens in the hybrid state. For $U_{0}=0$, a quantum second-order phase transition from the hybrid state into a pure gapless nematic state occurs when the strain reaches a critical value. A nonzero $U_{0}$ suppresses the critical value of the strain. The relevance of these results to recent experiments is briefly discussed.

Coulomb interaction and magnetic catalysis in the quantum Hall effect in graphene

The dynamics of symmetry breaking responsible for lifting the degeneracy of the Landau levels in the integer quantum Hall effect in graphene is studied in a low-energy model with the Coulomb interaction. The gap equation for Dirac quasiparticles is analyzed for both the lowest and higher Landau levels, taking into account the Landau levels mixing. It is shown that the characteristic feature of the long-range Coulomb interaction is the decrease of the gap parameters with increasing the Landau level index $n$ ("running" gaps). The renormalization (running) of the Fermi velocity as a function of $n$ is also studied. The solutions of the gap equation reproduce correctly the experimentally observed integer quantum Hall plateaus in graphene in strong magnetic fields.

Chiral asymmetry and axial anomaly in magnetized relativistic matter

The induced axial current and the chiral anomaly are studied in the normal phase of magnetized relativistic matter. A special attention is paid to the role of the chiral shift parameter Delta, leading to a relative shift of the longitudinal momenta in the dispersion relations of opposite chirality fermions. In the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model, it is shown directly from the form of the gap equation that Delta necessarily exists in the normal phase in a magnetic field. By making use of the gauge invariant point-splitting regularization, we then show that the presence of Delta essentially modifies the form of the axial current, but does not affect the conventional axial anomaly relation. By recalculating the axial current with the proper-time regularization, we conclude that the result is robust with respect to a specific regularization scheme used.

Normal ground state of dense relativistic matter in a magnetic field

The properties of the ground state of relativistic matter in a magnetic field are examined within the framework of a Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model. The main emphasis of this study is the normal ground state, which is realized at sufficiently high temperatures and/or sufficiently large chemical potentials. In contrast to the vacuum state, which is characterized by the magnetic catalysis of chiral symmetry breaking, the normal state is accompanied by the dynamical generation of the chiral shift parameter $Δ$. In the chiral limit, the value of $Δ$ determines a relative shift of the longitudinal momenta (along the direction of the magnetic field) in the dispersion relations of opposite chirality fermions. We argue that the chirality remains a good approximate quantum number even for massive fermions in the vicinity of the Fermi surface and, therefore, the chiral shift is expected to play an important role in many types of cold dense relativistic matter, relevant for applications in compact stars. The qualitative implications of the revealed structure of the normal ground state on the physics of protoneutron stars are discussed. A noticeable feature of the $Δ$ parameter is that it is insensitive to temperature when $T \ll μ_0$, where $μ_0$ is the chemical potential, and {\it increases} with temperature for $T > μ_0$. The latter implies that the chiral shift parameter is also generated in the regime relevant for heavy ion collisions.

Surprises in relativistic matter in a magnetic field

A short review of recent advances in understanding the dynamics of relativistic matter in a magnetic field is presented. The emphasis is on the dynamics related to the generation of the chiral shift parameter in the normal ground state. We argue that the chiral shift parameter contributes to the axial current density, but does not modify the conventional axial anomaly relation. The analysis based on gauge invariant regularization schemes in the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model suggests that these findings should be valid also in gauge theories. It is pointed out that the chiral shift parameter can affect observable properties of compact stars and modify the key features of the chiral magnetic effect in heavy ion collisions.

Spontaneous rotational symmetry breaking and roton like excitations in gauged sigma-model at finite density

The linear $σ$-model with a chemical potential for hypercharge is a toy model for the description of the dynamics of the kaon condensate in high density QCD. We analyze the dynamics of the gauged version of this model. It is shown that spontaneous breakdown of $SU(2) \times U(1)_{Y}$ symmetry, caused by the chemical potential, is always accompanied by spontaneous breakdown of both rotational symmetry and electromagnetic $U(1)_{em}$. The spectrum of excitations in this model is rich and, because of rotational symmetry breakdown, anisotropic. It is shown that there exist excitation branches that behave as phonon like quasiparticles for small momenta and as roton like ones for large momenta. This suggests that this model can be relevant for anisotropic superfluid systems.

Schwinger-Dyson Approach to Color Superconductivity in Dense QCD

The problem of color superconductivity in dense QCD is reconsidered in the improved rainbow approximation to the Schwinger-Dyson equation. The effect of the unscreened magnetic modes of gluons on the value of the color condensate is studied. In particular, it is shown that, at sufficiently large values of the chemical potential, these modes lead to the enhancement of the superconducting order parameter. The interplay between the instanton induced interaction and the one-gluon induced one in color superconductivity is discussed.

SU(2) Yang-Mills Theory with extended Supersymmetry in a Background Magnetic Field

The vacuum structure of N=2 (and N=4) SUSY Yang-Mills theory is analyzed in detail by considering the effective potential for constant background scalar- magnetic fields within different approximations. We compare the one-loop approximation with- or without instanton improved effective coupling with the one-loop result in the dual desription. For N=2 we find that non-perturbative monopole degrees of freedom remove the non-trivial minima present in the (improved) one-loop potential in the strong-coupling regime. The combination of Yang-Mills and dual desription leads to a self-consistent effective potential over the full range of background fields.

The effective potential of composite fields in weakly coupled QED in a uniform external magnetic field

The effective potential for the composite fields responsible for chiral symmetry breaking in weakly coupled QED in a magnetic field is derived. The global minimum of the effective potential is found to acquire a non-vanishing expectation value of the composite fields that leads to generating the dynamical fermion mass by an external magnetic field. The results are compared with those for the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model.

The next to leading order effective potential in the 2+1 dimensional Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model at finite temperature

The finite temperature effective potential in the 2+1 dimensional Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model is constructed up to the next to leading order in the large $N$ expansion, where $N$ is the number of flavors in the model. The distinctive feature of the analysis is an inclusion of an additional scalar field, which allows us to circumvent the well known, and otherwise unavoidable problem with the imaginary contribution to the effective potential. In accordance with the Mermin-Wagner-Coleman theorem, applied to the dimensionally reduced subsystem of the zero Matsubara modes of the composite boson fields, the finite temperature effective potential reveals a global minimum at the zero of the composite order parameter. This allows us to conclude that the continuous global symmetry of the NJL model is not broken for any arbitrarily small, finite temperature.

Derivative Expansion for the One-Loop Effective Lagrangian in QED

The derivative expansion of the one-loop effective Lagrangian in QED$_4$ is considered. The first term in such an expansion is the famous Schwinger result for a constant electromagnetic field. In this paper we give an explicit expression for the next term containing two derivatives of the field strength $F_{μν}$. The results are presented for both fermion and scalar electrodynamics. Some possible applications of an inhomogeneous external field are pointed out.
